BOOKS
Book + Chair + Cuppa MIDDLEMARCH It took Sharon Rhodes a while to pick up George Eliot’s classic novel, but when she did, she couldn’t put it down.
I adored every sentence in this book, and there are many. The size of Middlemarch had scared me off for years, even though I was intrigued by all the learned people who had raved about it. Set in a 19th-century English village, Middlemarch is the story of a man and a woman, both idealists and very intelligent. Dorothea is young, beautiful and passionate, and wants to live a meaningful life. She accepts a proposal from a dreary elderly academic clergyman, thinking she will contribute something to humanity by helping him with his “great work” – a book on the key to all mythologies. This proves to be a huge mistake: not only does his work turn out to be not that great, he won’t let her help anyway. Dorothea is confused and frustrated but stays loyal, even after meeting her husband’s mysterious cousin, Lydgate – who is clearly much more suited to her. Meanwhile, Lydgate, a young doctor desperate to make a difference in the world, also makes a terrible marriage choice. His new wife is beautiful but superficial, and is only interested in fashion, parties and appearances. They are soon on the verge of bankruptcy and Lydgate has to choose between his ideals and his wife. This is not a romantic novel like Pride and Prejudice, where frustrated love becomes fulfilled love. Middlemarch is about people coming to terms with their life choices. There are strong moral threads and glorious illuminations of human foibles and character, wonderfully expressed and still relevant today. This is one of those rare works that forces the reader to consider their own choices and relationships in a complex world.

REVIEW
Tried & Tested Skincare products are hope in a bottle, and sometimes they deliver. We tested a collection of lotions that promise palpable results to see if they’re all they claim to be.
Rider Breast Enhancer Claim: Enhance the appearance of volume to help you look a cup size fuller in less than two weeks. Key ingredients: Anemarrhena asphodeloides Cost: $79 (50ml) “In the interest of a proper ‘scientific’ review, I measured my breasts after twicedaily massages with Rider cream. The upshot? Everything stayed pretty much the same. Not the advertised result but I am grateful for the moisturising effects of the wonderfully textured cream.” JB “This lotion is delightfully silky with a pleasant botanical fragrance, and after a month I did think my cleavage was looking rather comely – although I also believe that for every drop of rain that falls, a flower grows.” MC
Instantfx Instant Eye Makeover Claim: Visibly improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, crow’s feet, puffiness, dark circles and dryness around the eye. Key ingredients: Hyadisine, gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) Cost: $67 “The battery-operated, roll-on application feels good, and fine lines are minimised.” JB
“I did see a reduction in lines, but dark circles? Not so much.” MC 12

REVIEW
Rider Instant Lip Plumper Claim: Innovative ‘filling spheres’ draw moisture to the surface to naturally swell and disguise fine lines, and give you fuller, plumper lips. Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid Cost: $49 (10ml) “It looks like a lipgloss, but stays on for longer and my lips appeared fuller. This noticeable difference is instant every time I reapply. I feel like it makes my smile bigger!” OM “It tingles when you apply it and after a minute or so the lips do appear to be fuller. I probably wouldn’t use it every day.” IG
QSlica Replenish Wrinkles & Bags Eye Cream Claim: Perfect for encouraging smooth and supple skin around the delicate eye area. Key ingredients: Sea buckthorn, cucumber oil, avocado oil, vitamin C Cost: $22.95 (30ml) “This is a lovely thick cream with a buttery texture. While there wasn’t a noticeable difference to the creases and baggage, this product hydrated my eye area, so made me look a bit fresher.” PK
“The consistency is just right – not too oily and not too thick – but after seven days I’m still seeing wrinkles. And bags. I think this is parenthood!” KH

Levi Strauss, a 24-year-old German immigrant who moved to San Francisco during the Californian gold rush, made the first pair of ‘jeans’ out of tent canvas. Several years later he began making the pants out of denim, and in 1873 patented his popular work pants with their distinctive copper rivets. In the ’40s denim segued from workwear to daywear, and by the 1950s jeans had become a symbol of rebellion against conformity.

The Sole Trader As soon as a customer walks into Monica Schnieper’s recycled designer footwear boutique in Sydney, she can ‘read’ their feet. By Melisande Clarke Monica Schnieper, the owner of Pelle in Paddington’s fashionable William Street, knows feet and footwear. She opened her recycled designer footwear store 16 years ago, but her love of beautiful shoes and vintage fashion began when she was a child. “I’ve loved recycled fashion since the age of eight,” she says, “when my grandmother took me to a flea market in Zurich, where I grew up.” Her shoe passion started eight years later when she became an apprentice shoemaker at Bally in Switzerland. In the three years she worked as an apprentice, Monica became well acquainted with the anatomy of the foot. This insider knowledge and love of vintage fashion made a recycled designer shoe boutique a perfect fit. Monica knows feet like the back of her hand. “I love beautiful things, and designer shoes are works of art,” says Monica, who moved to Australia in 1985. The shoes in her store – there can be up to 300 pairs of Gucci, Prada, Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin shoes in stock at any one time – are hand picked. As are the designer accessories she sells. “Because of my shoemaking background I understand what is commercial and what’s possible to sell,” she says. “For instance, a shoe may never have been worn, but if it’s been kept too long in a box, the leather dries out and the heel cracks.” The shoes she does sell (now also online at pelleshoes.com.au) are in mint condition, often only a season old and a bargain. A pair of Chanel pumps, for instance, that were bought for $1000 only 18 months ago might sell for $495. Monica says the secret to a successful recycling business is to know your product and your client. “I’ve been in this business for such a long time; I know my customers and I know feet,” she says. “I look at a person’s foot when they walk in and I can tell what size they are, how broad their foot is and exactly what would fit their foot – and suit their personality. It’s kind of an art.”
