LETTER from the EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Summer issue
“Resilience is accepting your new reality, even if it’s less good than the one you had before. You can fight it, you can do nothing but scream about what you’ve lost, or you can accept that and try to put together something that’s good.” - Elizabeth Edwards
At this time last year, I was in awe of what we were able to accomplish five months into a global pandemic. When I look back at the year that has passed, I continue to be grateful. BELLA continues to be here. My team and I have not stopped working hard every day to bring you amazing content from curated experiences for you to live your most beautiful life. This time is most exciting as it’s also my two-year anniversary since taking ownership of BELLA. And the cherry on top is we get to celebrate in a very big away. Aside from our annual Hamptons party, we have Boyz II Men gracing our summer issue cover and joining us for what will be a memorable bash! The following pages are a reflection of what we didn’t have for a while: Family time, barbecues, fun, hugs. Self-care has been a big part of people’s pandemic journey, and I hope you enjoy my suggestions (“5 Steps to Fabulous”) on page 16. Celebrating literally anything will be huge over the next few months, which is why I’ve asked our team to share their favorites cocktails to say cheers with on pages 80-81. Travel is back as best as it can be. We got to experience a staycation like no other in Cape Cod. Read more on pages 94-96. And because Hamptons will continue as the BELLA place to be each summer, be sure to learn more about Capri Southampton (pages 42-44) and our staple Southampton Social Club (pages 78-79). My team and I are forever grateful for your support, especially during this time. I personally cannot wait to celebrate with you if you’re joining us at the Hamptons. With love and hope, and wishing you the best summer ever,
Vanessa Coppes

behind the scenes
the back cover
We’re thrilled to be featuring artwork from Amanda Ringel on our back cover. Amanda is also responsible for our “Life Is BELLA” logo and some additional projects we have in the works. "'I am the Sun' can mean a lot of things, but drawing this made me think about how a person is their own light, and sometimes we need that light to not only guide us through the greatest of times but also the darkest of times. That's how I came up with the idea for the halo. Also, becoming your own light makes you realize you don't need to rely on anything or anyone to make you happy except yourself, which ultimately, results in peace, hope, and harmony."

5 steps to fabulous
inside & out Choices for living beautifully, By Vanessa Coppes
Summer is finally here, and with life going back to a semblance of ‘normal,’ we can all get back to doing the things we love. Self-care continues to be at the top of my priority list. I am excited to share with you the activities that continue to bring me back to myself. I hope they serve as a source of inspiration for you too! READ Until you heal the wounds of your past, you will continue to bleed. We know this, but are we willing to do the work it takes to heal? In “What Happened to You? Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing,” Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Bruce D. Perry discuss the impacts of trauma, building resilience, and the path to healing in order to gain wisdom. My key takeaway from this book is that giving back to yourself is the greatest gift you can give to others. And if you’re a parent, this is a gift, especially for your children. Amazon.com

FAMILY TIME I’ve always believed that family time is about quality, not quantity. It seems like all we’ve done over the past year is spend time with our immediate family. What I did learn once and for all is that we will never get back these precious moments. God only knows how much I have enjoyed spending more time with each of my boys. What a gift! I hope it’s been the same for you and your loved ones.

NURTURE YOUR INNER CHILD I did a thing my soul has been screaming for me to do for years. My childhood teacher was so strict and mean, I lost interest three years into my dance practice. The longing to dance again, however, has never left me. All these years later, I decided to re-enroll, and after my first class, I cried in my car. I realized that it’s never too late and you’re never too old to pursue your passions. MonmouthAcademyOfBallet.com
DATE NIGHT It’s overrated and overstated, however, my husband and I are finally actually doing it—spending time together and rekindling our connection in ways we used to do before kids. Time continues to pass, so it takes conscious, daily efforts to stay connected to the people who matter to us most. Looking into your partner’s eyes after years of doing life together with the ups and downs—that’s a true testament to love in action. Do it now, when it matters most.

Treviso, Italy CONSORZIO DI TUTELA DEL PROSECCO DOC PROMOTIONAL AND VALORIZATION DEPARTMENT MANAGER Prosecco.wine MY BUSINESS: My job has me promoting
Prosecco DOC appellation worldwide, consolidating historical markets, opening business opportunities in new markets, and raising the awareness and brand reputation of Prosecco in the marketplace. I perform a range of marketing activities to achieve those goals, including developing marketing and communication strategies, creating advertising plans, finding sponsorship opportunities, media relations and engagement, planning and managing various promotional activities like fairs, trade events, consumer wine tastings, cultural and sports sponsorships, developing advertising and social media campaigns, and the design and creation of marketing materials. THE BEST PART: Traveling, meeting people,
popping Prosecco, talking about it, and feeling the sparkle of working with a product that is a symbol of Italian lifestyle—trendy, contemporary, brilliant, cool, authentic, creative, never exclusive, but a great expression of great conviviality moments. NEW CHALLENGE: Promoting the newborn

with a further touch of Italian elegance and delicacy. It boasts a charming pink color, elegant and fruity nose (strawberry, raspberry, and green apple), and a round, creamy, and refined mouthfeel. IN THE BEGINNING: I did much problem-

MY BUSINESS: I make exotic tea blends to create hot
tea and cold brews that mix well with liquor. My mission is to showcase the richest flavorful hues that tea has to offer in a super creative and artistic way. IN THE BEGINNING: I started to offer my tea
fusions as a way to enhance my self care and of course to generate a second income while doing something that didn’t stress me out. In essence, Teas Your Spirits was born through my journey in seeking spiritual clarity. The blending and grinding of the loose leaves with spices, dried fruits, and flowers is so healing; it is my form of meditation. Before I started my tea business I had a greeting card and paper invitation business, which was very rewarding. I currently manage a nonprofit organization whose mission is to offer a platform for cultural education programming. MOST REWARDING: Aside from the benefits of the
self care it brings by nature, the most rewarding is seeing the surprised faces of my clients when they see how pretty everything looks and how tasty my tea is! MY BUSINESS: My mission is to offer a product that, while
timeless and classic, also presents unapologetic boldness. I realize it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s totally fine. But we all have a story, and this is my way to tell mine and to learn about yours. This is as much a creative outlet for me as it is a way to inspire others to tell their stories. The dress alone does not make me who I am...my story, my past, my struggles, all the mistakes I have made along the way, the way I walk into a room—that tells my story. However, a well designed dress that fits well and that complements my colorfilled life certainly makes it easier for me to tell that story. I want to dress that woman who is ready to walk into the room and tell her story. IN THE BEGINNING: My background is business. I did
not go to fashion technical school. It has been many years of learning along the way, and I continue to learn. I have an MBA in business, and I have been working since I was 18 years old in healthcare. It is very close to me and I am passionate about making patients’ lives better through my work. Since I was a little girl I knew I was going to do something in the fashion/beauty industry. It was a dream I never really talked about because as a little girl in the countryside of the Dominican Republic. I honestly did not have the slightest idea of how that would happen, but I knew it would. I have always been a dreamer—I have always had the ability to close my eyes and just imagine that feeling of what it will be like when it happens. MOST REWARDING: Without a doubt, it’s getting to

Zak & SELOM Agbito OLIVER
Los Angeles, CA MAD RABBIT TATTOO CO-FOUNDERS MadRabbitTattoo.com
OUR BUSINESS: Founded in 2019, Mad Rabbit Tattoo was born and
Photography by Garin Chadwick
bred with a passion for ink as we saw an opportunity to create a superior natural solution to help improve the healing process after seeing the lack of effective and all-natural products. With the mission to eliminate all unnatural and processed ingredients found in traditional aftercare, we sought out to create product offerings that embodied the basics of holistic healing with Mad Rabbit Enhance–Tattoo Balm, Mad Rabbit Repair–Soothing Gel, and Mad Rabbit Defend–Sunscreen. Mad Rabbit promotes individuality, adventure, and anything badass.
IN THE BEGINNING: We met in freshman year at Miami
University, largely through Delta Sigma Pi, the university’s business fraternity, and started working on Mad Rabbit after trying our hand at another e-commerce startup selling women’s bathing suits. We created Mad Rabbit’s first batch of balm in a crockpot in our college kitchen from ingredients bought off Amazon. Oliver: “[At Miami] it was very much Selom and I skipping class to cook this balm, and we got our neighbors involved; they were helping us ship out packages. Some professors were our very first customers in some senses. It really took off from the start, which helped us solidify our theories about the need for this product. My mom has years of apothecary experience and she helped us come up with the original seven-ingredient balm. We’ve kept that product development mantra the same. We like to keep it simple and all-natural. It’s been a great method for us, with no unnecessary ingredients and no chemicals. It really just goes a surprisingly long way. Then, we graduated and accepted traditional jobs. Selom: “I moved to Wichita for a two-year rotation with Textron, while Oliver went to Manhattan to do mergers and acquisitions consulting for EY-Parthenon. We both loved our jobs but that wasn’t the end of Mad Rabbit. We invested all our non-working hours growing the company and eventually quit to work on Mad Rabbit full time.” MOST REWARDING: Inspiring people to innovate and providing
a solution to an underserved market. Conditions are always changing, and this can be good or bad for a business. When COVID-19 hit, a lot of companies decided to stop or reduce spending, but we decided to at least double our ad spend, which was a big risk, but it ended up paying off because it catapulted us into being the top brand in the tattoo aftercare space.

he HGTV network is famously known for its multitude of home and design shows featuring some of the best designers, contractors, and home experts in the business. Artist and TV personality David Bromstad is right at the top of that list.
As the first ever winner of the network’s reality design competition show, “Design Star,” the artist known for his eclectic style and love for bright, bold colors has been a part of the HGTV family for the past 15 years. And while David has found success in the world of real estate and design, he says his childhood dream was to become a Disney animator. “Fame wasn’t part of my existence or my dream,” David explains. “I just wanted to be well-known and respected in my craft.” After a stint at the Walt Disney Company, David began designing kid’s fantasy bedrooms around the Southeast area. Fast-forward two and a half years later, and on the suggestion of one of the interior designers he worked with, he entered the design competition show that would alter the trajectory of his life. “I was barely making ends meet, but I was loving my life,” says David. “I loved what I was doing. I could go into work whenever I wanted, I did not have a boss, and I really loved my life before TV.” Despite the fact he had no formal training in interior design, that didn’t stop David from taking a chance. With no expectations of winning, he viewed the show as an opportunity to help out his career and to have fun in the process. But as he began winning a challenge here and there, David quickly realized he had a shot, and his competitive side went into “hyper-crazy mode,” as he describes it. The win launched his TV career, and the rest—as the say—is history. Since then he’s had numerous shows of his own and starred in a handful of others for the network, including his latest, “My Lottery Dream Home,” now in its 11th season. Fans everywhere have fallen in love with David’s infectious laugh and big personality, and lucky for us, we were able to spend some time with him to talk about his career and artistic vision, which include those fabulous tattoos!
48
You entered “Design Star” on a whim with no expectations of winning, yet you did. How did that feel? I’m an artist who just watched my friends; I never took classes. So I thought I was outclassed, and [there was] no way was I going to win this. So winning was obviously a dream come true. I basically went from almost rags to slightly richer. It was a blessing; everything kind of aligned and I had no idea it was aligning, but looking back at everything, it just worked out so seamlessly.
You’ve had multiple shows on HGTV, and for the past 11 seasons have been helping winners find their ultimate dream home. What do you love most about “My Lottery Dream Home?” Besides the success of the show, it’s super fun and it gives people hope. The most fun is hanging out with my crew and getting to know these winners. All we do is giggle; I don’t know how we get any work done. They have to cut through so much stuff that we say, but we know we have a job to do and we’re all very professional. If you’re not having fun doing everything you’re doing on a daily basis, then you’re doing something wrong.
Within the show, winners are shown three homes before making their decision. How does it work in terms of finding “the right one?”
We really do a good job of searching for the perfect houses for them. Of course, we show them more than three houses, but it’s a 22-minute show and we have to keep it clean and simple, so we show you the best. When they come to me, they’re like, “Help, we’ve looked for years and just can’t find it.” Sometimes it takes an outside perspective of someone who can help you envision your life in that house. And it’s easier when you have someone help you do it because then you can step away from it and really think about it in a more unique and fun way.
49
up close + personal One of the perks of the show is the opportunity to travel to many different places across the country. To date, which has been your favorite? Cape Cod. We’ve gone there so many times, and I absolutely love it. It is one of the most epically charming places I’ve ever been. The travel is the best part of the job, and it’s also the hardest because you’re obviously sleeping in someone else’s bed, living out of a suitcase, and it gets tiresome, but on the flip side you’re seeing places you might never go and visit on your own. Seeing how America lives—I love that—and it’s what makes me really happy.
this,” or “I need this type of house.” The more you look, the more you know exactly what you want. I am the most exhausting person to shop with for houses. The house I bought is not a complete fixer-upper but I’m redoing everything. It’s a beautiful home in the most beautiful area. I fell in love with it just because it’s got such a charm and comfort to it, and of course, I’m going to put my own design craziness all over it and make it even more fantastic. It’s been a blessing, and I’m so happy to be doing it.
As an artist, you’re not afraid to take chances. From where do you draw your inspiration?
My sister is a huge source of my inspiration. She’s an interior designer and a fellow creative like me. We just set each other off creatively, and I look up to her. Her color senses are insane and wonderful and very different than mine—also very complementary. She is probably my biggest source of inspiration…we’re always sending each other Instagram pictures to look at. Obviously, I get my inspiration from other interior designers and artists as well, but my sister pushes me to another level that is amazing.
Having a creative eye, do you share some of your artistic visions when visiting the homes?
I give the advice only when they allow me to. I’ve been in this industry for so long and you can overwhelm someone who might not understand, so that’s why I ask if they are looking for a fixer-upper, to do things ourselves, or to just find move-in ready? Because if they say move-in ready, then those design tips are just not going to resonate with them, and it makes the househunting not as fun. When they want the advice, then it comes out—it’s so much fun to do that too.
It seems like a lot of the winners are first-time homebuyers, which is always amazing to watch. What advice do you share with them? Obviously our conversations are so much more than what you see on the show. I go into extensive things like, What’s your closet situation? I just bought a house myself and the closet situation is bad, so I had to add another closet. Those are the kinds of things you have to think about before you move in. I’m not going to force my tips on anyone, but I will definitely make suggestions.
After helping others find their dream home, you recently purchased your own in Florida. Can you share a little bit about the process of house-hunting for yourself ?
I looked at probably 200 homes, and I’ve been looking for about four years. It’s been exhausting because my pace would literally change every two seconds. I would be like, “Oh, I want to do 50
Let’s talk tattoos, which is another way for you to express yourself creatively. This might be a difficult question, but do you have a favorite?
It’s like asking my favorite color or favorite child. The one that brings people the most love and happiness and an immediate smile is my Mickey tattoo on my right shoulder; I have like six Mickeys over there. I love him and he makes me so happy. It represents hope, fantasy, and magic, and all the things you feel as a kid. I continue to live off those aspects.
I love them all for different reasons; they all have a meaning whether it is super-intense or not, and some are just nostalgia. I have a scratch-and-sniff popcorn sticker on my belly because my family loves popcorn and I collected scratch and sniff stickers when I was a kid.
Between the new season of “My Lottery Dream Home” and your home renovation, is there time for any new projects? I’m just enjoying life right now. I think another project would be fine, but I don’t want to do another TV show because it’s a fulltime job, and right now my full-time project is my house. Once I get through that, then I will be like, “OK, where am I going to retire, and start looking for properties to retire in.”

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS AS MUSIC INDUSTRY ICONS By Jennifer DeCillis

cover story o have never experienced their musical genius, danced along to their hits, or fallen in love with their ballads is inconceivable. For 30 years, legendary musicians, Boyz II Men, have been serenading the masses and fortifying their place in music industry history as an elite R&B ensemble. Paving the way for boy bands to come, their accolades and countless awards speak for themselves. Ranking among the likes of Elvis Presley and The Beatles, Boyz II Men has broken records, even their own, topping Billboard charts and making their albums a staple for generations. From humble beginnings in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to sold-out shows across the globe, Boyz II Men has never forgotten where they came from, which has attributed to their massive success and longevity in the industry. Besides their musical reign, they have also expanded their prowess into movies, TV shows, philanthropic work, and winemaking. Nate Morris, Wanya Morris, and Shawn Stockman shine individually and dazzle as a trio, even now as they once again set out to tour the world. It is far from “The End of the Road” for Boyz II Men, and BELLA was there to share in the story of their past, present, and what’s in store for the future… Cover photography by Jerry Metellus Opening spread photography by Chris Martin

First thing’s first: As someone who lived in your hometown of Philadelphia and graduated from Temple University, I need you to set the record straight. Best cheesesteaks in Philly… go!
NATE: Well, I can only speak for me—I’m an “Ishkabibble’s” guy, because I’m a chicken
cheesesteak guy.
WANYA: Honestly, the ‘hood has the best chicken cheesesteaks. “Bella” is where we used to
go every day when we were at the studio. Up there toward Broad and Girard, they have the best ones for me...“Mimmo’s Pizza” is great. NATE: “Geno’s Steaks” become synonymous with us; we used to hang out up there. Then
we got a little bit more money and started venturing out, and instead of getting gratis cheesesteaks, we started buying our cheesesteaks.
SHAWN: If you want a really good cheesesteak, go with someone who knows the area!
Now, congratulations are in order on an incredible 30 years of success. How do you feel celebrating the 30th anniversary of releasing your first album?
SHAWN: Amazing and accomplished! We feel there is so much more that we can do and
will do, but to have experienced as much as we’ve experienced–the highs and lows, the ups and downs—we endured it all. We sincerely love each other after all of these years. It’s a great accomplishment, and we’re just happy to still be here and for people to still appreciate what we do. We are artists, singers, and songwriters, and that’s what we got into this business to do. We’re grateful, we’re humbled, and we want to continue, and we’ll see if we can make it another 30 years.
You are among the elite in the music industry, ranking among Elvis Presley and The Beatles. Does it even feel real, or have you gotten used to the success? Photogrpahy by Debby Wong / Shutterstock.com
NATE: It’s one of those things that you grow up wanting to do what you do, and one of our biggest goals was to be the best we can be at it. We thank God for it, there are so many blessings. You have songs that people will remember even after you’re gone. Our focus keeps us from being jaded about our accomplishments. Every day you live, you’re extending that legacy and that history. WANYA: The funny thing is, during the time that all these accomplishments were
happening, we were always working. We never stopped working or got a good chance to sit and bask in it. It wasn’t until we actually sat down and weren’t doing something that we were able to say, “Wow, that is an accomplishment and a blessing.”
You have amassed countless awards and accolades, accomplished so much throughout your careers, and collaborated with some of the industry’s most talented artists. Is there a favorite or most memorable? SHAWN: So many! There were so many things that just snowballed, they become
countless. From meeting Michael Jackson for the first time, to meeting Prince for the first time, to performing at the 1996 Olympics in front of 2 billion viewers, to doing a song with Mariah Carey that broke records, to the tours, the commercials, and upcoming projects– our lives do not suck! It’s hard to just pick one, there were so many great ones. Too many blessings have made our lives just one big movie. WANYA: It’s really something we are looking forward to continuing. The greatest
accomplishment for all of us is to be together for 30 years, and it’s something we could not have forecast 30 years ago. Our music and the way we work together is a legacy that we hold onto.
Now, to “pour the wine, light the fire,” let’s talk about my favorite of your latest endeavors— Harmony Wines. SHAWN: Our wine is something that we are
very proud of and took us longer than what people might think. We have been trying our hand at getting into the alcohol business for many years. We have finally come to this milestone in our careers and have an actual wine that was officially created by winemakers in France. Anyone who has tasted it has absolutely loved it. I would have never thought that us as singers would be successful winemakers. So, that is a great accomplishment in itself. For that to come to fruition the way it did and be received the way it’s been received is another blessing.
What originally sparked your interest in winemaking?
NATE: We delved into it a couple times, but
nothing ever stuck. Our business partners in France have a vineyard, and we gave it all of our energy and efforts. From design, to the name, to the color scheme, we chased it down and felt really comfortable. After Shawn came up with the name, “Harmony,” each type of wine—red, white, rosé—really fell into the personalities of the group and our music. It started to feel the most organic and natural. WANYA: Not to mention, the wine is organic,
the grapes are organic. They play our music to the grapes and it helps them grow. It’s all harmonic.
So, you’re quite literally infused into this wine… SHAWN: We have a saying now that “not only
can you listen to our music, but you can taste it too.” It was perfectly blended with our music, with no chemicals in our grapes, and they learn how to grow organically through our music and those great winemakers. NATE: The rosé is my favorite, by the way!
You are everywhere! Besides your music, your side projects and passions must keep you insanely busy. Nate, your show, “Hit Properties,” falls right into the new television sensation centered around home remodeling, house flipping, and luxury rentals. What inspired your interest in the real estate market?
NOTHING BUT FUN
NATE: I actually enjoy doing it in my free time—

designing, building, construction. My manager and I invest in properties, and we started taping it and DIY Network and HGTV liked what we did. It was fun to do something creative outside of Boys II Men that didn’t rely on my music talents. I learned a lot of things and built a lot of things, and it’s just my other creative outlet outside of the group.
“We just focus on fun….we don't overthink, and we don’t care about other opinions," Joe explains. "In doing that, we have found tremendous success in all different areas of business.” This philosophy is the exact reason Boyz II Men partied with BELLA in The Hamptons to celebrate the Summer Issue, he adds. "Wine, Summer party, The Hamptons—we’re in!" 55
cover story Shawn, what was it like being on the other side of the stage as a judge on NBC’s “Sing Off ”? SHAWN: The cool thing about that show was it brought
me back to my roots as far as acapella music is concerned. Doing that show was right in my wheelhouse, to sit and talk for hours about music and acapella, that was the best job ever—outside of Boys II Men. We had a really good time and I met people of like-minded interests. I met Dan Niederer, CEO of a watch company called SevenFriday—I’m a big watch fan—and we came out with a watch in honor of the charity I have with my wife called Micha’s Voice, named after my son who was diagnosed with autism at age 2. We wanted to develop a charity to help families taking care of children with autism. Proceeds from the watch collaboration went to Micha’s Voice. I feel like I’m giving back to something other than myself, something near and dear to me, by helping other families.
And the development of your new app with N’Sync’s Joey Fatone, bridging the gap between learning and applying social skills, is so commendable. Tell us more.
SHAWN: Yes, the app helps autistic kids with their everyday
routines, as well as helps the parents of those children. It’s another fun way to just help families out that need a little assistance. It’s a rough thing to have a child with autism.
Wanya, your salsa moves absolutely mastered the “Dancing with the Stars” stage! Did it come naturally to you being a performer? WANYA: It kind of came second nature. I’ve always been
a dancer and keen on picking up steps. It was one of those things that was just fun and something I felt I needed to do to show myself I could. I’d walk down the street and instead of people saying, “There’s that guy from Boyz II Men,” they’d say “OMG, that’s the guy from ‘Dancing with the Stars’!” We put so much into every dance, and Lindsay [Arnold] taught me how to love dance like I love music.
I’m not sure how you manage to juggle it all, but on top of everything, you’re touring again. I’m sure your fans are excited, but how do you all feel to be back on the road?
NATE: We’ll be on the road again, it’s just what we do. We
do more touring than we do recording nowadays. People want to get out and we want to get back out, just to go on the road and have fun. I think our music message is needed right now in the world. SHAWN: The tour pretty much speaks for itself. If no one’s

LGBTQ+ NIGHTLIFE SURVIVAL By Jonathan Calixto

T
hroughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, gay bars were established as places for queer individuals to openly socialize. Long before the historical Stonewall Inn, these venues helped people explore their sexual orientation and gender identities. In this last year, many iconic bars and safe-spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals have had to close their doors for good or adapt to a new normal due to COVID-19, putting at risk the survival of queer nightlife. In a year that has forced many business owners to pivot, Shawn Hazen, marketing and special events manager at Roscoe’s Tavern, has been at the forefront of navigating such an unexpected time. Since 1987, Roscoe’s Tavern has been at the center of Chicago’s LGBTQ+ nightlife, known for its drag entertainment and community. While those ideals haven’t change, this past year forced Roscoe’s team to find innovative ways to keep the brand alive. Almost immediately into the shutdown, Shawn and the Roscoe’s team brainstormed ways to make some income and keep the business going once strict lockdowns were lifted. “It was never a resting of our laurels, Shawn explains. “Instead of everyone saying ‘Let’s get back to normal,’ for us it was more, ‘How are we going to navigate this new normal? That’s what has kept us going this whole time.”
Tavern to adapt to the new digital way of life. Just like the rest of the world turning to Zoom, Shawn organized digital viewing parties with contestants from “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” as well as virtual shows. This new approach showcased the success of digital tipping. “It used to be dollar bills, and I know it seems trivial, but you put those Venmo or Cashapp handles on the screens and those performers are making some serious coin just from people going on the app,” Shawn shares. As Roscoe’s Tavern looks ahead, Shawn noted that the opening has not just meant a lot for customers, it has also given entertainers who had been stuck at home performing in front of a green screen a chance to connect with people for the first time after a long year. But what is the key to this success, and how can brands adapt to this new normal? As Shawn explains, “creativity and our drive to keep going” is the foundation. In addition, a lesson everyone should have learned during the summer of 2020 is that “everyone has a space—especially in LGBT nightlife spaces and LGBT neighborhoods.”
This attitude is what propelled them to get with the digital times and put a virtual twist on some of its popular programming. Known for their drag entertainment, whether it is live viewings, meet and greets with the cast of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” or programming with local drag in Chicago, this was one of the first parts of Roscoe’s

Spotlight POSSIBILIOTOLOGY: IT’S A GREAT DAY TO BE AWESOME WOW COACHING & CONSULTING Vallori Thomas is the epitome of joyful energy and passion. A former executive for a top fashion house, she went on to start a non-profit helping women and families. She is also an entrepreneur and the creator of WOW Coaching and Consulting. But Vallori didn’t always feel on top of her game, and she describes a time when she felt her life hit rock bottom. “It was not a comfortable place,” she says. “It was a place that I knew I didn’t belong.” It took a major mindset shift to pull herself out of that despair. It started when a friend asked the question: “What do you really want?” Vallori had never been asked that question before in earnest, and it led to a conversation in which she articulated dreams and goals she had previously only thought about. The perspective that helped Vallori reclaim her life’s purpose is what she calls “Possibilitology.” It starts with possibility thinking, which involves an exploration of what is possible in your life. Through a series of solutions-focused questions, you can then “engage in transforming what is into what might be,” she explains. This “can-do mindset” is the basis of her book of the same name, which she describes as “reflections from my life in building myself from bottom and reacclimating myself into the full stream of life and actually speaking my vision, my truth and sharing my identity and my thoughts.”
Q: What would you like to say to your former self? A: I would tell myself to know my truth and love my truth and to have courage in all things.

How to

summer dating of (new)
By Carmelia Ray, celebrity matchmaker and online dating expert

S
pring fever had singles coming out of their PJs and winter hibernation, although many were still dating in lockdown and with limited contact. Many venues were still closed or operating with a small capacity to service people. As the summer approaches and post-pandemic singles are eager to get out and about, however, millions of singles are now re-entering real-life dating.
Get outdoors and get active It’s not surprising that singles worldwide are rushing outdoors to enjoy the summer weather and the opportunity to connect with friends and family they have missed. There are countless benefits to getting outside and getting active with a partner. To begin with, there are many perks that come with exercise and physical activity, such as extended life span, stress relief, increased happiness, and emotional bonding with your partner. For singles who value a healthy lifestyle, being active establishes a mutual commitment and places value on being healthy and fit.
3
As a professional matchmaker who works with singles across North America, I can say that more and more of them are ditching phone calls and video dates for face-to-face meet-ups. Singles are tired of technology when it comes to dating, and they’re looking to connect physically after more than a year-long lockdown that cramped their dating game. Can you relate? If so, here are three ways to make the most of post-pandemic summer dating.
Get on Clubhouse, or try a new social app Clubhouse is an invite-only app that allows people to connect through their voice on an audio platform. I recently officiated the very first Clubhouse wedding of a couple who met in one of my matchmaking rooms. Natasha Grano and Michael Graziano were two successful entrepreneurs who happened to be at the right place at the right time. When Natasha heard Michael’s voice on my Clubhouse stage, she said, “It was love at first voice.” Natasha instantly connected to Michael’s energy and what he stood for. They ended up interviewing one another on Natasha’s podcast, and continued their long-distance correspondence until Michael flew in the middle of the pandemic from Vancouver, Canada, to the UK, where Natasha lived. Within 10 weeks they were married as both were crystal clear on who they wanted in a life partner, all thanks to an app. Virtual meet-ups online and through various social media platforms like Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, and even LinkedIn, are proving quite successful in the search for love.
Take a road trip or hop on a flight
Before the pandemic, I matched many singles with potential partners through other collaborating matchmakers across the country. I’ve had singles from LA fly to New York, Boston to NYC, Utah to Miami, Toronto to Vancouver, and beyond. Now that travel restrictions are lifted, singles looking for a connection outside of their social circle or even their local city are finding that being open to travel to meet a partner creates more opportunities.
One of my coaching clients, who currently lives in North Carolina, felt there were not enough men in her area who fit her criteria. We mutually decided she would expand her geographical reach to other cities to increase her pool of eligible men to meet. If you have the time and resources to travel (even a road trip will do!), having the ability to meet up with someone potentially compatible outside of your area will significantly increase your chances of meeting a life partner. You just may find your perfect partner in a different zip code. Take advantage of the warmer summer weather, longer days, and plenty of activities and places opening up post-pandemic to help you find love. Connection is at an all-time high, and I highly recommend you swap your phones for eye contact and a chance to meet someone in real life! 63

Do you need
LOVE or maybe just a PET? By Jarrod Thalheimer
Lately, you are feeling the pangs of loneliness a little more sharply, more intensely. This, in turn, has sparked some big questions to cross your mind:
Am I truly looking for love? Do I want to share my life with someone? Am I done being alone? Is any of this real, or should I just go and buy a fish? It might seem flippant, but at various stages in all our lives we often require different things. One period might be a more personal, selfish one vs. another time in which we are more giving and open to sharing and growing our sense of being. Another might be more material in nature, all income-andbuying stuff. Or maybe we are just in a holding pattern, trying to get a general sense of where to go next. Knowing that more than 50% of marriages end in divorce is reason enough to take things a little slower. Better to ask yourself a few good questions before signing up for a long-term anything—dog or cat included. Thankfully, here is a sparklingly fresh, personally tailored quiz from BELLA that provides exactly what the doctor (not a real doctor!) ordered. Is it the final word on all your needs? Of course not, but it might be enlightening–and even a little fun too. Circle all your answers and add up the score at the end. Your personal truth will be revealed soon after!

However, after seeing one special photographer on set, working alongside the likes of Nigel Barker, Carol Alt, Irina Pantaeva, and Iris Apfel, I can attest that Vital Agibalow truly breaks the mold.
Well, it builds credibility. It makes me more professional than any newbie these days who starts with a digital camera and doesn't know what it means to shoot slides. You have to be much more accurate when doing so.
That’s fascinating; I never thought of that. So, I know you love portraits—why is that your favorite style?
I love working with people and seeing their reactions when they see themselves from different angles—it is priceless! But I do also work with fashion designers, which is a whole different world!
As he worked the camera with quick bursts of intensity, Vital never wiped the professional yet inviting halfsmile-half-smirk from his face—and the effects were evident. Most of us cower in the face of fame, but Vital’s lighthearted and sensitive demeanor allowed his subjects to open up in ways I had never previously seen. The result: Portraits of each subject’s inner being—comfortable, raw, and vulnerable. I absolutely had to sit down with Vital to try and understand the masterful mind behind this photographer’s prowess.
Who was the most challenging designer to shoot?
Probably shooting Karl Lagerfeld’s portraits. Our time in the studio was limited to only 30 minutes, which is a photographer’s worst nightmare! But the results were so good. He really liked the images, which is huge, since he’s a photographer himself. Karl’s portrait was published in BELLA Magazine and many others, so the hard work paid off. Vital regularly contributes to BELLA’s covers, including his most recent wonder—BELLA’s first ever Pride Issue cover with makeup artist extraordinaire James Vincent.
Tell me a little bit about yourself: Where are you from? How did you become a photographer?
I’m New York-based, but my roots are in Sweden, Russia, and Ukraine. When I was 7, my dad gave me my first camera—a Leica—as a birthday present. I fell in love with it. I started taking portraits of the other kids in my neighborhood. There’s something about portrait photography that has clearly inspired me since an early age. By the age of 20, I started working with local modeling agencies, and I opened my own business by the time I was 21.
That’s incredible that you started so young. How has your photography changed since then?
Those were the film days. As a photographer, you couldn't afford to make a mistake back then. Now everyone shoots digital, so you can see the shot on display, which makes it all so much easier. But I'm proud to say I started as an original film photographer. VITALphoto
Do you have any recommendations for others interested in pursuing a career like yours?
Do it only if you really enjoy it. Don’t do it for the money, but for the art. You’d be shocked how much money you can make when you prioritize the art first.
That’s great advice. So, what new projects are you working on right now? Where can we see your work?
Most recently, I worked with legendary supermodel Carol Alt for her new show on FNL Network, "Carol Alt’s Living Room." But there are some other interesting side projects, too! Lately I’ve been working with beauty and fashion bloggers like Kate Romanoff, and my work was recently featured in a book released in Europe by CAPRICE magazine, “Supermodels 2020.”
You have a brand partnership with HENSEL, right? Tell me a little about that.
HENSEL is a German brand that produces professional lights for photographers. I've been the brand ambassador for this company since 2008. I'm using their lights on each and every shoot, and I'm proud to promote them in my studio and through my work. VitalPhotoNYC

MAGICAL SUMMER
ahead By Meghan Rose
Welcome to your Summer Tarotscopes, spiritual babe! As we enter into July, the Sun is still in our sensitive and intuitive water sign of Cancer before we get to experience Leo season from July 23rd to August 22nd, and then gently end August with the Maiden’s sign of Virgo. You’re in for a treat during these two months: Water, Fire, and Earth elements are all on the table. The only one we’re missing is a bit of Air, so try to keep your mind clear, witty, and stimulated as we transition! In this issue, you won’t just find Divine messages, but a sweet summer anthem to go along with it. Ask yourself before July sweeps us up in its tides: “What do I want my summer to look like this year?” and make a promise to yourself not to deviate from this answer. If you want to travel, make time to do so — even if it’s a staycation! If you want to eat healthy and seasonally, carve out time each week to walk to your local farmer’s Mmarket and prioritize this above all else. The summer is yours, spiritual babe. Let’s make the summer of ‘21 one to remember! Let’s see what the cards have to say. Read on for your Sun, Moon, and Rising signs.
ARIES
THE EMPEROR: Ah Aries, this is what they call “full alignment.” The Emperor is a card that represents Aries energy in the Tarot, so this is a signal to you that you’re right on time. That goes for love, career progress, and self-expression. If you’ve been feeling behind’ recently, rest assured that this summer is going to leave you feeling confident, sexy, and full of stamina to get to all of those “bucket list” items you have for July and August. It may be time to take further initiative in your life. If you’ve been doing a lot of work behind the scenes, this is a sign for you to step out onto center stage and pour your heart and soul into what (and who) you have your sights on. Plan a fun getaway for yourself, and if you feel so inclined to ask a special someone to join you, just know it will be twice as fun. You will be rewarded for taking risk and action this summer — trust yourself and show up with self-assurance. Some of you are getting opportunities to be in the limelight or create viral content. The whole world is waiting for your direction, thoughts, and opinions — share them with confidence! YOUR SUMMER ANTHEM: “PEACHES” JUSTIN BEIBER
TAURUS
ACE OF CUPS: Dear Taurus, love is on the horizon for you this summer! If you’ve found yourself ready to break out of quarantine blues and (safely) re-enter the dating pool, know that it’s projected to be a very positive experience for you. If you’re with someone, or have your eyes on a special someone already, now is the time to take things to the next step. Express your love by living in it. Allow your heart and soul to sing with joy as you find love in every speck of dust, beam of sunshine, and blade of grass. There is something to be said about attracting more of what you feel, so invite yourself to bask in the love that’s already inside and around you at this time. Do you have a passion or hobby that you enjoy doing? This may clue you into where or how your love life transcends. You’re being encouraged at this time to dedicate yourself to the things in life you enjoy the most. Do not stray away from living like this in July and August, if anything, make these your most passion-filled months yet! YOUR SUMMER ANTHEM: “KISS ME MORE” DOJA CAT (FEATURING SZA)
GEMINI
THE WORLD: My multi-tasking loves, you are about to be very busy in July and August! If you’re not already planning on traveling, rest assured that the opportunity to do so is readily available to you. Think of places that you want to take a plane, train, or automobile to go and explore. This summer will be one for the books, and even if you can’t yet see the light at the end of the tunnel, know that inner travels are always an option as well. Put on relaxing music, light your favorite candle, put on a boujee face mask, and cut yourself up some tropical fresh fruits and imported cheeses. Pour yourself a glass of wine from a faraway land that you’ve been wanting to go to. There are endless possibilities to transport yourself toward the rest and relaxation that you so desperately deserve.
CANCER
FOUR OF SWORDS: Ah, my sweet, sensitive water signs. It seems like this summer is meant for you to do some inner healing and introspection on the past. There are still memories and past pains that you haven’t quite let go of. That’s OK, don’t be too hard on yourself. But if you find yourself still holding onto parts of your past due to those feelings never being recognized when they initially happened, now is the time to self-soothe and feel in order to heal. Remember that if being harsh and demanding with yourself was the answer, it would have worked by now. Celebrate your successes, relish in your growth, and let go of the people and habits that you’ve outgrown. It’s not your job to keep everyone comfortable it’s your job to live truthfully; eventually you’ll see that you’ve been leading by example to those around you. Now is not the time to play small. Enjoy this summer to the fullest, and allow yourself some more alone time especially from those who have been too dependent on you recently. YOUR SUMMER ANTHEM: “YOUR POWER” BILLIE EILISH
LEO
NINE OF WANDS: Ah, Leo. It seems that life has been giving you gentle nudges on where to go next, and you’ve done everything in your power to avoid listening. Expect learning lessons to abound in July and August, leaving this summer one you’ll never forget. It seems that there’s a pivotal decision arising, one that could change the course of your life for the better. But are you ready to make the proper sacrifices in order to see your big pay-off? I’m also sensing that this summer could invite in a new way of living. A move, a new relationship, or a new belief system is coming toward you. Open your arms and prepare for this to arrive to you. The more you put up a fight, the worse you’ll hurt yourself and those around you. Be cautious in your fear of surrender. What’s waiting on the other side isn’t quite as scary as you’re imagining it. YOUR SUMMER ANTHEM: “LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN” BRUNO MARS, ANDERSON .PAAK, SILK SONIC
VIRGO
THE DEVIL: Ah, sweet Virgo…when we see The Devil card arrive in preparation for future months, it can act as an omen. Do not let yourself fall into addictive patterns this summer. Whether it’s booze or beaus for you, try to do everything (and everyone) as consciously as you can. Some of you may be caught up in the ‘Honeymoon Phase’ of a connection, and your guides are asking that you find balance in spending time with lovers, friends, family, and yourself. Make sure that everyone is getting equal parts of the pie before you hear someone ask, “Where’s my slice?”
For some of you, expect an “a-ha” moment that will make it all come full circle. You’ll be receiving the answers to your long-awaited questions on how to move forward in life. Who will come and who’s getting left behind? Make sure that you’re open to the possibility of you being your own worst enemy when you’re thinking about who (or what) holds you back in life. It’s OK to admit to your faults. Sometimes that’s the very key to the lock you’ve been trying to open.
Any recurring patterns that you incur should be easily met with a feeling of deja vu—it’s not about avoiding patterns all together that shows your progress, but how quickly you can get yourself out of the same trap that really tells you how far you’ve come along. Try not to be too hard on yourself this summer, it’s OK to have days, or weeks even to simply enjoy yourself. However, make sure you’re giving your time, money, and energy to the things that you want, and not simply following the herd.

LIBRA
THE STAR: What a phenomenal summer ahead for you, Libra! Your balanced Venusian energy is about to flourish during the months of July and August, all your spirit guides are asking that you do is keep the faith. Any of the times you find yourself stressed, overwhelmed, or tired, remind yourself “this is just temporary” and encourage yourself to go with the flow. The more times you can do this, the more joy you’ll find over the months ahead. Be sure that you’re checking in with those around you, and remind yourself that life isn’t always all about you—sometimes the very remedy to our pain is helping someone else. Be a listening ear for the people you care most about, especially the friends and family members who seem like they have it all together. Your ability to teach others is going to be heightened during the summer months, and I promise it will be karmically paid back to you later on. Be patient with yourself and your energetic investments, Libra! Now is the time to plant your seeds of intention, expect the dividends to be paid back to you in happiness. YOUR SUMMER ANTHEM: “LEVITATING” DUA LIPA (FEATURING DABABY)
SCORPIO
TEN OF SWORDS: Let go, Scorpio. You may have convinced yourself that you have it all figured out, and what would life be if it wasn’t our greatest teacher? This summer will be a time for you to take inventory of the people from your past who are still taking up your mental and emotional space. You need to get brutally honest with yourself, as some of these people are the same people you’re now thinking “please don’t let it be them” about. For some of you, you’re playing too small in your life: taking jobs that don’t pay you well enough, letting your vacation time go unused, trying to appease friends and family with how you live your life, or even avoiding the proper risks that would kick your life up a notch. Now is the time to put your money where your mouth is and try out a new approach with both love and career. Let go, Scorpio….let go! YOUR SUMMER ANTHEM: “DRIVER’S LICENSE” OLIVIA RODRIGO
SAGITTARIUS
THREE OF PENTACLES: What a time to be alive, my fiery Sag! You’re starting to understand what all the fuss has been about with travel, fun, and friendship. Make yourself known in your community, and live life as if it were your last—ergo, it’s your only chance with this lifetime! I see most of you shifting away from simply existing into truly living this summer. Call up your closest friends and give spring break a second chance. It’s never too late to have fun, and regardless of your age, it’s never too late to start either. You’re being called to let go of the “worker bee” mentality, and remember why you were put on this planet: It’s your divine right to be happy. Learn how to alchemize your pain into wisdom, and learn from the past. Even though you may have had it rough growing up, now is the time to rewrite what your life is all about. This chapter is called: Me, Myself, and I. Enjoy it, dear Sagittarius! YOUR SUMMER ANTHEM: “BEST FRIEND” SAWEETIE (FEATURING DOJA CAT)
@MeghanRoseTarot
CAPRICORN
THE TOWER: And it all came crumbling down. Capricorn, part of the reason you’re feeling fear as the summer approaches is because you know you cannot sustain life and happiness at the pace you’re running. It’s time now to focus on making space for your life to unfold, but that requires a dedication to the truth that’s been missing in recent times. If you’re still trying to keep up with the Jones’—or anyone else for that matter—this is your warning signal. Reel back from the life you’re working toward, and start to be in the ever-present now. Do you really still want that life, or are you simply on autopilot working toward a falsified reality that doesn’t suit your desires anymore? For some of you, it’s time to take a certain someone off of a pedestal. Can’t think of anyone? It may be you! Let yourself be “human” again; no one expects perfection from you, lest should you be expecting it of yourself. Use July and August to encourage breakthroughs and invite in new belief systems that work for the present-day version of yourself. It’s time to see things for what they really are. YOUR SUMMER ANTHEM: “HEAT WAVES” GLASS ANIMALS
AQUARIUS
FIVE OF WANDS: It’s said in certain studies of astrology that Aquarius is ruled by Saturn in the day and Uranus at night; these two diametrically opposite planets (Saturn ruling rules and Uranus ruling progressive thought) could inform us of what July and August have in store for you, my water-bearers. This summer is expected to be one of conflict, confusion, and an opening of the mind for you. Don’t look at this negatively, conflict has been one of the greatest openings for progress and change in the past—let that be your expectation as the summer begins. Call in, and get comfortable with change. You may be parting ways with a lover or a group of friends before August ends, and trust in your spirit guides that they’re helping you make way for like-minded people to enter in. If you’ve been feeling stuck or stagnant at work, expect some passion projects and new opportunities to arise during these next two months. Your hard work and unique talents are about to pay off for you in a big way. Keep yourself level-headed by spending time outdoors, connecting with nature, and integrating things that you used to enjoy as a child. Feel, heal, repeat! YOUR SUMMER ANTHEM: “GOOSEBUMPS REMIX” TRAVIS SCOTT, HVME
PISCES
THE CHARIOT: What a whirlwind summer ahead for you, Pisces! Life is about to take off in a new, exciting way. There seems to be others who are quite envious of you, your life, and your recent successes—and if not yet, you can expect them before August is over. You’re attracting the right people, places, and opportunities like never before. Spirit is asking for you to let go of the mentality that you need to wait for the other shoe to drop. You’ve made it past a checkpoint recently that will allow you to take more risk, receive more reward, and make that cycle your new normal. You can—and deserve—to rest into safety, security, and stability. Allow this summer to be where your new trust in the process begins and gets put into action. You’ve got this Pisces, and everyone else has seen it for quite some time. YOUR SUMMER ANTHEM: “SAVE YOUR TEARS” THE WEEKND AND ARIANA GRANDE

Have
fun, have rum By Amanda Mactas
76
I
t’s tiki time! Rum, a distilled liquor made from sugar cane, is having its moment in the limelight. Sales are increasing and people are eager to learn about and explore this versatile spirit. While rum is often associated with the Caribbean, countries in Asia, South America, Europe, and North America all make rum as well. With expressions ranging from white rum and dark rum to spiced or flavored rums and rhum agricole (which is distilled directly from pressed cane sugar instead of fermented juice or cane byproducts), there is much to learn about this unique and diverse spirit. One of the biggest misconceptions about rum is that it is too sweet and will give you a terrible feeling in the morning, explains Ben. “Rum comes in many flavors and styles. I’d argue that there is a bottle of rum out there for 90% of any fine spirit drinker,” he continues. “I’m confident in saying this because I also believe 90% of American consumers have not been exposed to a very wide variety of quality rums.”
SALES SURGE
The recent pandemic has inspired people to move out of their comfort zones and try new things, and rum, which is often associated with a warm beach vacation, is a treat that can transport you during difficult times. In fact, the major growth we are seeing in rum sales is mostly attributed to premium, top-shelf rums, meaning people are willing to spend more money on a quality product. Ben Jones, the managing director of Spiribam, has a theory. “Spirit drinkers are becoming fatigued by American whiskey and are searching for the same features and stories they enjoy about their typical favorite spirit,” he explains.”[They are] finding these experiences in rum “THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION IN RUM and with a far more reasonable price tag.”
IS THAT IT IS TOO SWEET” BEN JONES, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF SPIRIBAM
The North American managing director of Don Papa Rum, Chris Rigby, expands, telling us that “the different styles and production techniques increase the opportunity for discovery. There are many rums to explore.” Each and every country that produces rum has its own set of rules and regulations, which results in a huge variety in the spirit. Rum is the base of many of the world’s most popular cocktails—the daiquiri (Hemingway’s favorite), mojito, dark and stormy, and the piña colada are just some of our favorites.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE
SUMMER COCKTAIL? VANESSA COPPES
CEO & EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
When it comes to alcoholic beverages, I am a lightweight. This makes me the perfect candidate for sweet, mixed drinks with more fruit and less alcohol. During summertime, my go-to is a frozen margarita— they are salty and sour with just the right amount of sweet from the strawberries. They are so refreshing, and I can manage to drink two and still keep myself together. JENNIFER DECILLIS
JESSICA LICCIARDELLO

CREATIVE DIRECTOR
In the summertime I love to enjoy a Moscow Mule. It contains all of my favorite flavors, including ginger and lime. The best one I’ve had is made by renowned bartender and mixologist Erin O’Neill, owner of the new restaurant that bears her name in the Hudson Valley. A special twist on the traditional vodka ingredient she uses is Stoli Razberi vodka—yum! oneills-pub.com
As soon as the summer weather starts to set in, my go-to cocktail is a classic Aperol Spritz. Its sunny hue, light and sweet taste, bubbly texture, and always photo-worthy presentation make it perfect for summertime sipping. And, of course, I top the Aperol with my favorite, Prosecco DOC—the Brilla pairs perfectly with the apéritif. Finish with a splash of soda and garnish with an orange slice, or if you want to toast in traditional Italian style, swap out the orange for green olives (really!), and enjoy! For more Prosecco DOC cocktails, follow @ProseccoDOC_USA.

A strawberry mint cocktail is my new summer cocktail obsession! It is light and refreshing, and if you love strawberries and mint like I do, you will love it! I ordered one (maybe two) at the Belmar Grill a few weeks ago, and I have been serving it to friends ever since! INGREDIENTS
• 4-5 sliced fresh strawberries • ½ oz simple syrup (optional) • ½ oz fresh lime juice (1 lg lime) • 10 mint leaves • 2-3 oz vodka • 21/2 oz seltzer • Sliced strawberries and lime for garnish DIRECTIONS
• In a cocktail shaker, add 2-3 sliced strawberries, simple syrup, and lime juice • You can blend strawberries until they are dissolved if you prefer (I leave them in sliced) • Add mint leaves and muddle gently; tap 2 -3 times with muddler • Add vodka and fill ⅔ with ice • Shake for 20-30 seconds to make sure it is chilled • Add to a pretty wine glass with ice • Add club soda, garnish, and enjoy!

I’m not a big cocktail gal, but I do enjoy a refreshing adult beverage on hot summer days, which makes White Claw Hard Seltzer my tried and true favorite. The Watermelon flavor screams “summer” to me, as does the refreshing Pink Grapefruit and the not-too-sweet-and-marvelous Mango. The fact that each contains only 100 calories and 2 grams of carbs per 12-ounce can is a big bonus! WhiteClaw.com

My favorite summer cocktail is a Raspberry Mojito. Light, refreshing, and a little sweet, it’s the perfect drink for a hot summer day. Muddle together raspberries, mint, simple syrup, and lime juice, then add 2 ounces of rum. Top with seltzer, and enjoy!

We love “The Stylish Spritzer,” an easy and refreshing wine spritzer mix of white wine, lemon/ lime club soda, and a splash of a grapefruit-flavored soda. It tastes like homemade champagne, and with the quarantine ending, there’s a lot to celebrate these days. Cheers to a fun summer!

My go-to summer cocktail is the Watermelon Agua Fresca Mimosa. It’s the perfect drink to enhance a day at the pool or an evening out with friends. All you need to do is fill your glass a third of the way with watermelon juice and top the rest off with champagne. To get fancy, just add some mint leaves.
My go-to summer drink is a refreshing Paloma. It’s so easy to make and pairs perfectly with a nice dinner, or just chilling poolside. In a small glass, add two shots (or more, who’s counting?) of tequila, a splash of grapefruit juice, and 2 ounces of sparkling water or club soda. Garnish with half of a fresh lime, coat the rim with sea salt, and you have a perfect summertime cocktail. Enjoy! 81

Growing & thriving in the
NEW NORMAL By Geraldine “Gerry” Viggiani
What a year and a half it has been! Pandemic, lockdowns, social distancing, riots, uprisings, political unrest, police brutality, racial injustice, job loss, and homelessness. All these things have come together as a collective nightmare harder for some, but difficult for all. So much anger, hate, loneliness, fear, and anxiety has emerged. As a psychotherapist, I am seeing more people then ever in my group practice. People who never needed help before are coming in for therapy in droves, all looking for ways to cope with the unprecedented stress. As we are emerging from the other side of the pandemic, of course, in ways that are comfortable, we have a tremendous opportunity to change and grow, maybe even start over. The pandemic forced us to rethink all aspects of our lives. We have had to figure out a new way to work, live, date, and entertain ourselves by ourselves and for ourselves. Switching to the online world to maintain friendships and family relationships, working and meeting via virtual platforms, purchasing essentials online. Extra challenging has been for families with children who have had to learn how to entertain and educate their children all while working from home. Resilience has been key to survival. It is defined as the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. It is about getting knocked down and having the ability to get up again. What does getting up again look like for you? Are you going to do the same things, or will you do things differently? If we could see a benefit of the pandemic, it would be that many of us have had to re-examine, streamline, and reinvent basic assumptions about our lives. Understandably so, there are many who are just surviving, and that is what they need and must do. There are also many who are in a holding pattern because that is what the pandemic and quarantine demanded. Some have flourished and used the extra time at home to evolve. For all, this is a great time to reflect and observe how we want to feel in the coming months. 84
ACCEPTANCE AND COURAGE An excerpt of the Serenity Prayer says, “Grant me serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.” This is a powerful reminder that sometimes there are things in our life that we cannot change, or that the road to change will be difficult. Change is hard for most humans. We relish in the path of least resistance; to commit to change involves courage, resolve, and gumption. Daily reminders, inspirational quotes or pictures, a buddy, therapist, or a coach to help motivate you can help make the path less daunting. Sometimes change is just not possible now or even in the future for a variety of reasons. Not accepting this keeps us stuck. Acceptance is a choice to let go of what is impossible to change. If we are to accept, that must be done in mind, body, and spirit. We can do this by turning our minds over and over to acceptance, while taking steps that would reflect that acceptance.
A VISION FOR THE FUTURE What do we want from the opportunity to re-emerge? What is working? What is not working? Take a stance of curiosity and let go of judgment; we are brainstorming and there is no room for judgment while we are striving toward growth! A vision board or journaling can help. As noted in the book, “The Secret,” “The law of attraction is forming your entire life experience and it is doing that through your thoughts. When you are visualizing, you are emitting a powerful frequency out into the Universe.” Meaning, if you manifest it, you can make it happen. What would make you happier and more connected to your life? Taking a moment to notice how you are feeling now and how you want to feel. It is helpful to take a wholistic view of all the arenas in your life. Here are some examples of spheres to explore:
RELATIONSHIPS
Do you need to let go of ones that are not working? Do you want to date? Marry? Widen your social circle? How about reconnecting in person vs. via video or phone?
CAREER AND FINANCES
Are you happy at your job? Is there anything you could improve? Is it time for a job or career change? Would there be training involved? Is there anything you would like to change or save for in your finances? Home, debt payment, or retirement?
PERSONAL GROWTH
(including spirituality, social life, education)
Do you want to learn a new skill or hobby? Photography, writing, or surfing? Travel to new places? Take a class? Return to and recommit to your place of worship, pray, or start a meditation practice? How about volunteering or engaging in advocacy work with like-minded people?
HEALTH
Have you been neglecting your medical check-ups? Want to move from mentally coping to selfactualizing? Gained some weight? Want to start exercising? Do yoga? Eat healthier?
Out of the flames rises the Phoenix. Whatever that looks like for you within the confines of your COVID comfortability, change or accept and take this opportunity to move from hunkering down to growing and blooming. Seize the day! 85

Stepping into renewed strength:
new “ normal ” of working out The

T
he fitness landscape has changed drastically over the past year. We thought it was time to learn more.
The pandemic changed the way we work out in many ways, from the in-person class experience to the time of day we choose to get our sweat on. With this upheaval and drastic change, we sought to find out what might stay on as the world begins to open back up.
Breathe Easy
Staying Outdoors
Gym-goers who do come back inside may notice a few changes. At most gyms, air purification has become a significant part of their business.
While Americans put on an average of 15-29 pounds according to a recent report from the American Psychological Association, some people are not quite ready to flock back indoors to the gym setting, at least not yet.
According to Vinny Lobdell, president of HealthWay, which provides air purification systems to gyms around the world, “the health and wellbeing of individuals in the given space is paramount.” The company has been so busy trying to keep up with demand that his teams have been working around the clock for over a year. “What surrounds us matters. The smallest lung-penetrating ultrafine particles are wreaking havoc on even a healthy immune system,” Vinny explains. “It’s important for gyms to provide the highest efficiency filtration system available.”
More and more Americans have been vaccinated, so one would think there would be an overall easy feeling about stepping back into the gym. However, many people are opting for new, alternative ways to help combat the weight gain and gain strength and muscle. Many gyms, such as Life Time, are continuing to offer virtual programming through Life Time Digital (classes, personal training, recipes for $15/month and 1,000 live online classes per week), as well as outdoor classes at many of their 150 locations around the country. LifeTime.life
Post-pandemic Pedaling
Online bicycle retailer Trek Bikes conducted a national study this past spring around attitudes toward cycling as a result of the pandemic. This is what they discovered: 47% of Americans currently own a bike or use a bike-sharing network More than one-third (37%) of Americans have been riding a bike more since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic Nearly two-thirds (64%) of Americans feel that e-bikes are a good commuting alternative to cars For Americans currently commuting to work, or when they do return to work, 35% of Americans plan to do so by bike
New Perspectives
At Rock Box Fitness Studios’ nationwide locations, mirrors have been removed so people can focus on punching out pounds instead of staring at themselves as they work out. The kickboxing studio, which offers group workouts set to concert-style rock music, shares five tips on a healthy and fit post-pandemic workout:
1 Be slow and steady.
23 4
Continuously hydrate. Get plenty of rest.
5
Always listen to your body.
Never compare your journey with others. 89

Summer skin care to
sun
prevent
the effects of
damage
By Alexandra Anastasio
ne of our favorite times of year is upon us, and with that comes extended time spent outdoors—BBQs, beach days, and lots of outdoor activities fill our days. A little vitamin D and a summery glow always make people feel better than they do in those dark, winter months. Beautiful, warm weather may help uplift our mood, but sun exposure is not forgiving on our skin for many reasons, including premature aging and skin cancer. That’s why sun protection is key to any time spent outdoors; it doesn’t have to be 90 degrees and blazing hot to get a burn. “There are a lot of concerns people have when it comes to sun exposure,” explains Dr. B. Aviva Preminger, a renowned plastic surgeon located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
One of the new fillers, the RHA2, is really good at filling in fine lines, so I will use that to help out as well. But when the wrinkles really become a problem and the skin elasticity is bad, that’s when patients should consider a facelift.
Can these procedures be done year-round?
These procedures can be done during the summer as long as patients are careful about wearing sun protection. After any skin intervention you must be careful not to go right back out into the sun because the skin is vulnerable.
One area that sometimes gets neglected is the decollete. Can these treatments be used on the neck and chest area as well?
Yes, and a lot of these lasers can be used on the arms and shoulders too. There’s also a product I really like by Skinbetter that is helpful for the face and neck. It’s an even-tone correcting serum that’s used daily and can help with pigmentation.
Is there a point when it becomes too late to reverse sun damage?
According to Dr. Preminger, the sunburn is just the initial heat. What’s actually happening underneath is the sun can cause changes in a person’s DNA, and that damage can increase the long-term risk for all sorts of skin cancers. “Some of that is a genetic predisposition, and some of it’s just because of the damage done to the DNA from the sun,” says Dr. Preminger.
It’s never too late, but it does become more challenging. The further you let things go, like anything else, the worse they tend to get. Sun damage has a similar effect on the skin that smoking has—it prematurely ages you. A perfect example of end-stage sun exposure is someone like the character from the movie, “There’s Something About Mary,” or the actor George Hamilton. While it’s never too late to intervene, I do think some people need an intervention because they keep doing this to themselves. They think it looks good or healthy because they have a tan, but this is when you want to talk to them about some sort of artificial tan. If they feel they need to continue to look like they’ve been in the sun, there are much safer ways to achieve that.
Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. Approximately 5.4 million basal and squamous cell skin cancers are diagnosed each year in the United States, and these numbers continue to increase. That’s why it’s important to implement preventative measures into our skin care routine on a daily basis. We sat down with Dr. Preminger to find out some of the most effective ways to help protect ourselves while enjoying the outdoors, along with latest treatments available to help repair and reverse sun damage.
What you hear about is basic sunburns and skin cancer, but there are other effects in terms of how the skin ages. One of them is hyper-pigmentation, also known as dyschromia. As people age, you’ll notice brown spots and ultraviolet radiation causes changes in the DNA that can lead to all sorts of premature aging, hyper-pigmentation being one of them. When there is a general breakdown of the elasticity of the skin, is it starts to become wrinkled. It’s important to know that sun exposure really does cause premature aging.
What kind of treatments do you recommend to patients hoping to help repair and reverse the damage?
From a cosmetic perspective there is a lot we can do. For dyschromia, which are those brown spots, I use something called an IPL laser, which is intense pulse light therapy. It targets the brown spots, and they become darker and then flake off. For fine lines and general skin resurfacing, I will use a fractionated CO2 laser. I have the Deka laser in my office, which takes off the top later of the skin, rejuvenates it, and improves fine lines, pigmentation irregularities, and skin texture.
PremingerMD
Particular areas that are vulnerable on the face are the nose, lips, and ears. They are unforgiving areas when it comes to getting skin cancer. Especially when applying sunblock, these are all areas to think about.
Dr. B. Aviva Preminger
In what ways besides a burn can sun exposure cause visible damage to the skin?
What areas should people pay a little extra attention to even when the sun isn’t at its strongest?
A significant predictor for skin cancer is a sunburn at a young age. That’s why it’s important for parents to put sunblock on their kids as well as themselves. Ideally, sunblock should be re-applied every two hours.
What else can we do on a daily basis?
A hat is always helpful especially when sitting at the beach. People underestimate the value of sunglasses too. When we talk about the areas that age most quickly, the eyes and neck are always the first to go, because they are the thinnest skin. Wearing sunglasses with UV protection can be helpful; you don’t want to end up with skin cancer on the eyelid. It’s another sensitive area that is really not forgiving. I also recommend using a tinted moisturizer in the winter that has an SPF in it. I really like the one by Revision Skincare; it has SPF 45 and works really well. Using it on a daily basis is another helpful way to prevent skin cancer. It’s wonderful that we have all of these modalities, but I think there is nothing better than prevention. And for people who have had work done, it’s equally important to maintain their investment in themselves and be diligent about sunblock.

BREAST REDUCTION & LIFT By Dr. Aviva Preminger
“Enhancing your breasts can provide balance to your figure and greatly boost your self-confidence.” - Dr. Preminger Do you think your breasts are…Too small? Too large? Asymmetric? Do your breasts droop? Have you lost fullness? Some women have never been happy with the appearance of their breasts, while others have experienced significant changes over time. Whatever your concern, there is a solution. If you want to increase breast size and fullness, a breast augmentation may be the procedure for you. Three dimensional imaging can even help you visualize your result and find the breast size you desire. Some women have enough volume, but it’s all sitting in the lower part of the breasts causing sagging and drooping. This is particularly common after pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight loss. A breast lift may be the key to restoring fullness in all the right places. Breasts that are too large, however, can cause back and shoulder pain and interfere with exercise and weight loss. If that’s your issue, a breast reduction may be the solution. At your consultation, we will discover what you like and dislike about your breasts and create a customized surgical plan that will address all of your breast concerns, leaving you looking and feeling your best - a more confident, beautiful you!

MAGIC By Amanda Mactas
SETTLE IN
Conveniently located in the town of Brewster lies Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club, a sprawling estate with a plethora of places to stay, and plenty of things to do. Situated on over 400 acres of land, the resort, which is divided into two sides—the mansion and the villages—has 337 guest rooms and suites. Perfect for families or larger groups, the villages boast more than 200 villas, ranging from one to three bedrooms, complete with a kitchenette, patio or terrace, washer/ dryer, and lots of space. Those looking for a more traditional hotel stay can set up shop at the mansion, which was originally built back in 1912 by Samuel Nickerson following a fire that took out the original estate built in the 1880s.
PACK YOUR ITINERARY
With so much land at your disposal, you can bet that the resort has curated a seemingly endless array of activities for guests to take advantage of. From its pristinely manicured 18-hole Nicklaus-designed golf course (where you can also opt for private lessons from a pro), to Blueberry Pond, where you can try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking, there’s not only something for everyone here, but enough to keep you from ever getting bored. Hit up the private beach, practice your swing on one of Ocean Edge’s nine tennis courts (or even attempt pickleball), or rent one of the property’s bicycles and explore the 26-mile long Cape Cod Bike Trail (it’s wondrous!). If you need a break from all of the fun in the sun, rest your weary bones at the Beach House Spa, which offers an array of treatments that will have you feeling relaxed in no time. And, if the salty waves aren’t your speed, the resort also has a handful of indoor and outdoor pools for you to get your “Life Aquatic” on. A daily shuttle service makes it easy to get around, and the staff ’s attention to detail and spirit to please will make this a getaway you won’t soon forget.
Fire it up
Another private experience you can book during your stay is a beach fire pit, complete with s’mores, chairs, and your own personal beach attendant. Once you catch the sunset like this, there’s no going back.

FRESH CATCH
Ocean Edge Resort offers guests numerous ways to enjoy their stay, including a handful of private experiences that can be booked in advance. Among them is a private oyster tour (for up to 10 people), where you can get hands-on with the Cape’s beloved bivalves. Tour guides will take you to look at the property’s own oyster beds, where you will learn all about the shelling industry and local delicacies. (Did you know oysters have feet?!) You might even find yourself up close and personal with some other seafaring animals like crabs and snails along the way!
Chow down
There are seven spots for visitors to get their grub on at Ocean Edge Resort, from the more casual Linx Tavern, Shark Bah, and Beach Bar, to the more upscale Bayzo’s Pub and Ocean Terrace. Try the resort’s own Bayzo’s Brew, an exclusive pale ale made by Cape Cod Beer just for the property, and pair it with any number of their fresh seafood dishes for an unforgettable experience.
OFF-CAMPUS DINING
With all of the fresh seafood on the Cape, you would be remiss not to head off property to try out some of the local hot spots. Luckily, nothing seems to be further than a short walk, ride, or drive away. Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters is the place to go for your morning pick-me-up. Its charming barn appeal is known for lines out the door, but don’t worry—they move quickly! Known for its tasty coffees and indulgent pastries, stop in to pick something up and go for a stroll in the café’s herb shop and gardens. Do breakfast at Apt Cape Cod, a farm-to-table restaurant that has a little something for everyone, including its famous rosemary bread. The backyard seating is the idyllic setting to start your morning. Down the street you will find the Brewster Fish House, a cozy bistro-style restaurant whose lobster bisque will haunt your dreams (in a good way). Serving up meticulously prepared local seafood, along with fresh cocktails, this little spot should definitely make your list.
ABOUT TOWN
While you could certainly spend the majority of your time on the sprawling resort, there’s much to discover around the quaint town of Brewster. Begin your tour about town with a visit to the infamous Brewster General Store. The building, which was originally erected as a church in 1852, now stands as a general store full of history, knick knacks, and treats for locals and visitors to enjoy. Good old-fashioned penny candy, fudge, and toys will delight the kiddos, while branded clothing, kitchenware, jams, puzzles, and other gifts will keep your eye wandering indefinitely. Next door, The Brewster Scoop offers a much-needed way to cool off with ample homemade ice cream flavors to choose from and a long history of serving the town. And nearby, the independently-owned Brewster Book Store gives bibliophiles a welcome reprieve from the summer sun with an impressive array of books and gifts, including a fun section dedicated to local authors and stories about Cape Cod. If you plan your trip right, you might even have the opportunity to check out one of their many events or book signings. In the nearby town of Hyannis, you can hop aboard a boat with Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises for a chance to see some ocean life in action. With both indoor and outdoor seating, sun decks, and a full-service snack bar, the tour is narrated by an on-board naturalist, who will help you spot whales, dolphins, and maybe even seals. Typically running between three and a half to four hours long, there’s plenty of time for you to spot some wildlife and witness some quintessential Cape magic.
