LETTER from the EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Arts & Culture issue
“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” - Thomas Merton
I
t’s ironic to think that the role the arts play in our development is constantly being questioned. The former teacher in me cringes when I hear of programs being cut from schools or when parents encourage their children to have “something else to fall back on” in case they don’t make it in their creative endeavors. I cannot think of a time in our history in which we haven’t relied on at least one form of artistic expression that hasn’t forced us to look beyond that which is necessary to survive. Art leads us to create for the sake of expression + meaning. Art communicates, it shapes our everyday lives. Art can make a social statement + be enjoyed. Art also measures our levels of cultural sophistication. We’ve been able to learn about our human existence through cultural accomplishments and artifacts left behind—many of these having left permanent marks on our planet. I believe that the arts + our connected cultural expressions have been our saving grace, especially through what has been the most difficult years of our shared humanity. And because art makes life more manageable, tolerable, and enjoyable, it’s why I’ve dedicated an entire issue of BELLA to it. I love being able to document all the beauty generated by the people we’ve connected with through this year, as well as what my team has created. My love for ballet led me to follow Misty Copeland’s career. It wasn’t until I read her story that I found myself reading parts of my own. Her openness and willingness to share her journey and break barriers is the basis of her life’s work, which you can read all about on pages 64-69. Because it’s also the most fabulous time of the year, this issue is also jam-packed with gift guides galore to give and receive on pages 30-33, 50-53, and 84-86. We also get Up Close + Personal with legend Master P on pages 54-57 and Get to Know a little more about daytime TV's sweetheart Joelle Garguilo on pages 58-63. Nurturing our Mind + Body is hugely important to our readers so we share resources for healing through art on pages 94-95 + share tips on how to creatively date on pages 104-105. Like I shared, this issue is power packed and one my team and I are grateful to close out the year with. I cannot continue to thank you enough for your readership, our brand partners for their patronage, and my team for their dedication to the broader vision of this publication + our media company. Together we continue to create masterpieces with each issue. Throughout this holiday season, I encourage us all to truly enjoy our time with what we’ve come to realize is the pinnacle of our existence: our connection to family, friends, and colleagues that are like family. Stay warm, enjoy one another + these beautiful pages. Until next year! With so much love,
Vanessa Coppes
Behind the scenes with Anne Geddes
A
s a former teacher in the Dominican Republic, I used to write notes to my students’ parents on Anne Geddes stationary. That was over 20 years ago. So, if you would have told me that I would not only get to meet the legendary, world-renowned photographer, I’d also work with her on a BELLA Magazine cover, I would have called you crazy.
After our first inperson meeting we knew we would work together on something, and as fate would have it, here we are. It’s serendipity at its finest.
On shooting Misty Copeland for this issue:
“It was a dream come true, to be honest. Like so many around the world, I’m a huge admirer. Misty is such an inspiration— an immensely talented, courageous, and beautiful Anne Geddes recently launched an app that trailblazer. I loved working provides a safe place for you to easily upload and with her. I have two great store your images in the cloud, as well as share nieces living in Australia who them privately with friends and family. It’s more have been ballerinas since personal than Instagram and Facebook. There’s a fun Community Joy Board where you can they were both very small. add your baby’s photo to join images of babies Misty is one of their idols, so from around the world. Anne regularly posts huge kudos for Aunty Anne blogs—one of her latest focuses on Misty’s shoot as well!" in BELLA, with behind-the-scenes videos and images. Anne thinks of the app as “a personal Anne Geddes community.” Find out more by visiting AnneGeddesBaby.com.
On her favorite work so far: “It’s always my latest shoot, because even after nearly
35 years of photographing, I still find inspiration in creating images that celebrate life in all its beautiful and powerful forms. People think I only photograph babies, but in fact I love photographing people of all ages from all walks of life. I had a moment during the Misty shoot when I marveled at the fact that photographing adults can be so different to babies— and Misty had so much extra to offer, of course. Babies are a whole different ballgame, but their charm factor always shines through, and I love that too.”
On anyone wanting to follow in her footsteps:
“My best advice is to tell your own story in your own unique style, whatever your subject matter. As artists we have an obligation to be storytellers. Simply trying to copy someone else is never going to elevate you to stand out.”
On her favorite moments in her career:
“My favorite moments are always when there is unexpected magic in the air. It’s almost palpable, but fleeting, as is the way of magic, of course. Throughout my long career, in addition to my work that now is so well-known, I regularly accepted (and still do) private portrait commissions, which I’ve always loved. It’s so rewarding to create classic works of art for families to treasure through generations. Every family has their own story. Here in New York, I work with a talented team at Blonde Studios, but I also regularly travel globally for these commissions.”
On what’s next:
“More creativity, more inspiration, more storytelling. I loved working with the BELLA team, for instance. I truly believe that what the world needs now is a gentle dose of joy and positivity, and maybe that’s my specialty.”

No ugly Christmas sweaters here By Mindy Gura and Paula Orlan
Sweater weather is upon us, and while ugly Christmas sweater parties are a lighthearted way to ring in the season, holiday 2021 may be the time to take it up a notch with some incredibly stylish knits. Designers have included so many beautiful sweater options in their winter/holiday collections, and they are cozier than ever! Trending are cable knits in winter whites; festive reds and bold pinks are hot hues to try; and cardigans and 90s style vests are making a big comeback. Balloon sleeves, relaxed turtlenecks, and cropped jumpers are also back with a modern flair. ‘Tis the season to have fun with sweaters!

Cross Country Content Creation:
THE 2021 CARAVAN ROAD TRIP By Jennifer DeCills Caravan Social Club, a unique networking initiative, originally hit the road with its RV “haute wheels” back in 2005 as a contemporary store and experiential studio for events. Claudine DeSola created it to explore new neighborhoods and embrace the opportunity to travel all the way to California while showcasing a range of contemporary brands. For 2021, Claudine and her business partner Janine Just kicked off Caravan’s 10-day tour with a road trip covering the tri-state area’s greatest gems, including Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Hamptons. Their goal: To create a memorable opportunity for content creation, video interviews, and brand discovery. The road trip brought them to a number of unique and photo-fabulous locations, including sunflower fields, roller skating rinks, restaurants, beaches, and rolling countryside, to name a few. The inspiration for Caravan is that “collaborative storytelling comes to life when brands connect with content creators for organic integration that speaks volumes.” Indeed, the Caravan road trip is a melting pot for creators—musicians, editors, foodies, writers, fashion lovers, home décor experts, actors, and more. Among some of the fabulous brands on display: ibble, LeSportsac, Rag & Co, RejuvAus, Velvet Eyewear, SallyeAnder, Bakerly, Everybody Water, and Gillian Trask Jewelry. Take a look at some of the stops and creators the Caravan crew met along the way…

The chill is in the air! As much as I run from cold weather, I love dressing for it and even acclimating to it. These fabulous finds are sure to up your winter fashion game and even help you unwind. They also make the perfect choice for giving or receiving this season and beyond!
DSW: STEVE MADDEN GIBBS OVER THE KNEE BOOTS Want to look bold + flawless, with very little effort? Step into the Gibbs OTK boot from Steve Madden. I’m obsessed as they are designed with an aggressive lugged outsole reminiscent of a combat style. They will hug your curves while keeping all attention on the chunky heel. DSW.com BOTOX + IV HYDRATION WITH DR. JEFFREY LIN There is no shame in my Botox game! I’ll try anything to freshen up my face. Being on camera and in pictures almost every day eventually catches up with you, and anything I can do to minimize my prep time (because caking on concealer is no fun), I am there. BELLA brand partner Dr. Jeffrey Lin’s masterful hands help give my skin a youthful glow. More importantly, he introduced me to IV hydration therapy. I had heard the buzz, but I showed up at his practice one day feeling more depleted than ever. He advised me to try IV hydration therapy and I left feeling rested, recovered, and even enjoyed a better night’s sleep. As busy women, this is definitely a treatment I encourage you to incorporate in your wellness + beauty ritual. NewYouMedispa.com

YANGU BEAUTY
celebrates African skincare practices and honors cultural beauty norms
S
ipho Gumbo is a wife, mother, philanthropist, and founder of Yangu Beauty. Growing up in rural Zimbabwe, Sipho was taught the importance of her homeland’s flora and fauna by her grandmother, mother, aunts, sisters, and community at large. After years of suffering from breakouts brought on by skincare products formulated with harsh ingredients, Sipho began her journey into researching natural skincare and reconnecting with her African roots. She recalled the importance of her culture and the beauty rituals of her grandmother, who would use African herbs, superfoods, and botanical oils harvested in the wild, to begin formulating her skincare line in the U.S. Each of Sipho’s seven Yangu Beauty products are designed to benefit specific skin care challenges faced by women of darker skin tones. The ingredients are also sustainably harvested by women in her native Africa, and all proceeds support children orphaned by AIDS through their sister organization, Munhu Inc., founded by Sipho 17 years ago.
BELLA sat down with the beauty advocate and entrepreneur to learn how her culture continues to influence her business, her approach to skincare, and her daily life… Our culture can play a huge role in how we treat and care for our skin, as well as how we perceive beauty. How did your early life, growing up in Southern Africa, shape the way you approached beauty and skincare? Growing up as a young girl in rural southern Africa, with an amalgam of southern Bantu cultures, from the Xhosa, Ndebele, and Shona groups in my case, shaped perhaps 90% of my thought processes. I was privileged when I went to university to further understand that culture when I studied traditional literature and thought. Beauty, the concepts of beauty and health, and the worth of women—hence selfesteem—come directly from that.
Mentorship for young women for health and sexuality in the rural setting of southern Africa comes from older women instructing younger women, didactics, object lessons, and leading by example. There are the roles of your grandmother, mother, your sister, and aunt—especially your paternal aunt—who teach you how to be a person. It is rooted in the definition of ubuntu (“a person is a person because of others”).
Our culture is inherently a culture of praise, confirming that you are such a great person because you come from a lineage of greats. This gave us a connection that’s like an umbilical cord with our ancestors, from which we derive unshaken confidence and joy. The major topic was how to take care of yourself as a young woman, so you are always looking your best. This is when you learn about the best herbs to wash your hair so it is always healthy, the right plants and oils to use to wash your face to stop breakouts, and the types of fruit to apply to your skin to clear the blemishes. These remedies had been passed down, dating back to the era of transnational Bantu empires in southern Africa, thus, the beauty information was packaged by thousands of years of feminine wisdom. As an example, the most important aspect of the afternoon was on river baths. It was during this time that girls would take a bath, braid each other’s hair, and share ideas on the new styles. There was always praise on the looks of the finished styles. Then there was the coloring of skin, called isibhuda, which you could classify as make-up, using the red powder from plants and certain soils, the ochre on the skin, that is still very popular among the Himba women of Namibia. It is with this approach that I have shared Yangu Beauty with women around the world.
The women in your family inspired your love of skincare and appreciation for your culture. Were they also the inspiration to create your skincare line, Yangu Beauty?
Traditionally, as a young woman in Zimbabwe, you are supposed to have a very tight bond with your aunts. It is from your aunts that you learn about being a woman, especially sexual hygiene, and how you and your line of female ancestors implemented this knowledge. My aunts instilled in me the confidence I have today. They taught me that when you are comfortable with who you are, all else falls in place. They taught me that once you are sure of who you are, you will do everything to make yourself the best. As they would say, “Remember—you are MaHadebe and all Hadebe women are beautiful.” The basic rule to staying beautiful is taking care of yourself. It is with this inspiration that I draw from to create a product line that each woman would say, “I am beautiful because Yangu Beauty products make my skin beautiful.” It is my hope that every woman who uses our product line will feel and look beautiful. When I was facing breakouts and seeking the right products for my skin, it dawned on me that I had already learned everything I needed from my culture. This realization made it easy to go back to my grandmother’s oils, butters, milk, and herbs that she had shared with us many years later.
Tell us about how your rich African culture plays into the formulation of your products, and why the wild-harvested ingredients are so beneficial. Yangu Beauty products are an effective, natural skincare solution for people of darker skin tones. Our ingredients arose from trial and error by my foremothers over centuries, and each one has been tried and tested for Black skin, including ancient African oils and botanicals. I took these ingredients and applied cutting-edge chemistry and medical pharmacology to create products that truly work.
Growing up in Zimbabwe I had to learn which plants and their fruits we could pick and eat or use for other purposes. Marula, for example, is one of those trees I felt was everywhere; it’s so abundant, it is part of both folklore and the archeology excavations of the Great Zimbabwe empire 1,000 years ago. Because it is so ubiquitous, so much of the fruit fell on the ground, and there is a tale that we were told that elephants ate the fruit so much that they would get drunk from it. One of the difficulties in getting the Marula nuts is cracking the nut. My grandmother would make us collect the nuts, use stones to crack them, and then help her grind the nuts into a butter. She would then tie it in a cloth and let the oil drip from the butter, affording us a small bottle of Marula oil, which we would use after our river bath. Yangu Beauty remembers how labor-intensive it is to collect and process these oils. Yangu Beauty also supports the women that collect these nuts by buying the oils from a co-op that works with them. With each oil and ingredient, I can share a story about my culture. Each ingredient we use has skin benefits that makes our product line so effective for people of darker skin tones and those with sensitive skin.
With a full line of products— seven to be exact—it may be overwhelming for someone to know where to start. Do you have a favorite product or one that is especially good to keep on hand during the colder winter months?
Seven products may seem like a lot, but each serves a particular purpose, and you do not have to utilize them all to achieve desired results. We have two award-winning cleansers: the Cleansing Whip, for acne prone, oily skin, and the Gel To Milk Cleanser, for dry, mature skin. We also have two moisturizers, which are self-explanatory but very significant: the Moisturizing Day Cream, a light day cream for all day moisture, and The Finishing Night Cream, a super hydrating cream for people with dry skin. Yangu Beauty also offers an award-winning Even Tone Serum, which assists with dark spots and hyperpigmentation. The Bright Eyes Cream soothes dark circles and puffy eyes. Our Renewal Oil Gentle Make Up Remover is designed for a painless process of removing makeup, without stripping or drying your skin. For colder months, my go-to products are the Gel To Milk Cleanser, Moisturizing Day Cream, and the Finishing Night Cream—must-haves for winter. The Yangu beauty website also lists our products according to skin care concerns, making the skincare buying process seamless and user-friendly.
Why is it so important to you to keep the essence of your culture alive in your products and your everyday life?
I am glad you used the term essence, because my belief is, “I am because they were.” According to science, the mitochondria DNA is passed from mother to child. And so is language, at least in southern Africa, as the mother is the main teacher and transmitter of language, which shapes our thoughts and ideas. I believe that is the essence of being, and therefore, our culture is passed from our foremothers to us.
beauty scene | cultural beauty In Bantu culture we believe in the continuum. I believe by sharing my culture, I am keeping the essence of my foremothers alive, and my daughters will keep it alive, and their daughters [will do the same]—a continuum. I can now share with BELLA readers what my grandmother in rural Zimbabwe taught me (and what her own foremothers taught her for over thousands of years and hundreds of generations.) I believe that is the best way to keep her alive, and I hope my daughters will do the same to keep the continuum going. As women use Yangu Beauty products, I want them to partake in the beauty rituals that my grandmothers and aunts enjoyed; the memory of my river baths lives on. It is important to keep the essence of my culture in my everyday life, because my life beliefs and my business beliefs draw from my cultural philosophy of Ubuntu. This philosophy grounds me and allows me to treat others with respect, integrity, humility, belief, trust, and fairness.
How does Yangu Beauty give back?
Yangu Beauty gives back in every step of the business. Our ingredients are harvested by women who sell the seeds to a co-op that process the seeds into the oils we use. Yangu supports these women by purchasing the oils from this co-op. They in turn use the funds to support their families by paying tuition for their children. We are also recruiting women affiliates to help sell Yangu Beauty, which creates income-generating opportunities for women. Through our Beauty With Compassion program, we work with our sister organization, Munhu Inc., in which a portion of our sales are donated to support children orphaned by AIDS. YanguBeauty.com

Huntington, NY HOMETOWN FLOWER CO. CO-FOUNDER AND CEO HometownFlowerCo.com
MY BUSINESS: Hometown Flower Co. is a sustainably-minded flower
truck and pop-up floral design studio on Long Island, NY. We are missiondriven and work exclusively with locally-grown seasonal flowers. We offer all types of services from a flower delivery subscription in our signature “Flowers in a Bag” packaging, to floral design for special events, weddings, flower bars, workshops, and much more. IN THE BEGINNING: I am a third-generation florist but never really
had a connection to flowers until I started to learn about the Slow Flowers movement and its mission to help people form a connection to flowers that are grown locally. I became enamored with the idea of letting Mother Nature call the shots and found it creatively liberating to not be in complete control over what flowers we work with. I started using floral design as a form of stress relief and creative expression to detach from my career in marketing. That hobby grew into what Hometown Flower Co. is today.
Photography by Erica Schroeder
SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: We are guided by the fact that we
are doing something more than just selling a product. We are part of a movement to help make a lasting, positive impact in the world, so every decision we make goes back to that purpose. We challenge ourselves to think creatively about how we can introduce the concept of local flowers to people without coming across too preachy. Things like our flower truck, our packaging, and our workshops are ways for people to form a connection to local flowers without even realizing it.

NYC, Wilmington, DE/Los Angeles, CA JANEL TANNA FILMS ACTRESS + PRODUCER PSYCHIATRY DELAWARE PSYCHIATRIC MD, CHIEF RESIDENT @janeltanna MY BUSINESS: In the arts, I am mostly an actress. I strive to express and feel the truth
in performance. When I produce or help produce, I tend to select or create films with an importance of difficult social issues that might affect different people depending on the circumstances—things many people might be able to relate to in some way. In medicine, I use both my training in psychiatry and life experiences to also connect to the human condition in each unique person, while working with people to help them function at their optimum. IN THE BEGINNING: I’ve had a big imagination since childhood, and always loved to act
out tons of different characters. Creation of character drives me—understanding or creating the life of someone that might seem different on the surface, but finding the similarities that can connect you. As a young girl, I was also a gymnast, and was always interested in health and helping others. When I put my mind to it, I found a great liking for the sciences, so I eventually went to medical school. For filmmaking, my goal was to help express and create from a female perspective in my own way. SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: Always dream as well as act; act on something as well as
dream. Don’t fall into the trap of letting preconceived barriers define what you “should or should not” be doing. We all do sometimes but snap out of it and don’t listen; that is how you can achieve what you know deep down you are capable of.

Florida, Los Angeles, and Anchorage, Alaska BBC STUDIOS/NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL "LIFE BELOW ZERO" PRODUCTION SUPERVISOR NationalGeographic.com MY CAREER: I am the production supervisor of "Life Below
Zero" shows, so I’m responsible for the daily operations of the shows. Everything that has to do with how we shoot the show falls in my purview. That includes our field crew, cameras, outdoor and personal equipment, scheduling, insurance, payroll, inventory, logistics (which in Alaska, keeps you on your toes in itself–think small prop planes, ski planes, float planes, helicopters, snow machines, ATVs, etc.), and then tracking and managing all the costs it takes to get the job done. In essence, we are the support system for the creative team that goes into the field and captures the beauty of Alaska and tells the stories of the people who live off the land there. IN THE BEGINNING: I actually fell into the TV industry when
I moved to LA. My brother was in film and television in NY and had done a couple jobs in LA, and just reached out to give them my info as a production assistant should they need it. [I worked] a day or two, here and there. One of those companies was looking for someone to answer phones, get coffee, etc.–and I got a shot! The people on that team were/are my most valued mentors; they taught me more than I could have imagined. The pace of TV, the skillset, mindset, and work ethic needed to be in production all fit with my personality and interests pretty much immediately. But working in Alaska became kind of a niche for me—the landscape, content and people who you come across are especially remarkable. SECRET TO MY SUCCESS:

Jacksonville, FL ACCESS79 CO-FOUNDER AND CEO Access79.com
MY BUSINESS: Access79 is challenging traditional fine jewelry
retail experiences, which are geared toward men buying women’s jewelry as gifts and overlook the nuanced needs of the main wearer of fine jewelry—women. Our mission is to help women feel confident and educated in their choices, including how and where they shop for fine jewelry. Founded and led by female, AAPI luxury industry veterans, Access79 is a tech-enabled marketplace and try-before-you-buy service that introduces women to ethically sourced and produced fine jewelry pieces created by independent, small-batch designers and craftspeople who prioritize uniqueness of design with everyday versatility.
Photography by Access79
IN THE BEGINNING: I wanted to flip the antiquated,
intimidating, and inequitable experience of luxury shopping on its head. Traditional luxury brands reserve the privilege of shopping from home for the uber-wealthy, who spend hundreds of thousands of dollars with the brand. Access79 is democratizing the jewelry-buying experience by giving all women the opportunity to try pieces at home before committing. We partnered with 11 female physician-scientist clients, many of whom were and still are on the frontlines of the pandemic, to design a limited-edition S-C-I-E-N-C-E necklace. The goal of the campaign is to celebrate the win of science above all else in the last 18 months and to give our community a way to show their belief in science. SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: I practice risk-taking. I take risks on
a daily basis, but I don’t think of risk as an all or nothing, now or never proposition. You need to consciously decide to take risks and should start by taking small risks and then, as you get comfortable, take bigger and bigger ones. 46

Master
up close & personal
The power of positivity, conscious parenting, and Black superheroes By Allison Kugel
itting among carved mahogany wood-paneled accents and with displayed awards gathered from an unrivaled multi-hyphenate career, Master P began our conversation by allowing me to take the floor. Not surprisingly, he is a master delegator with a brilliant sense of when to shoot the ball and when to pass it. One of the greatest minds to emerge from the 1990s hip-hop pantheon, Percy “Master P” Miller transcended a childhood of poverty in New Orleans’ Calliope Projects to become a beacon of generational wealth, diversified business interests, and ownership in an industry once notorious for exploiting its artists. From music, movies, and real estate to the food and automotive industries, Master P’s portfolio continues to grow. A true gentleman who prefers to remain above the fray of controversy and relishes sharing the spotlight with those around him, Master P’s example and mentorship has guided artists from Snoop Dogg, Lil’ Wayne, and 2 Chainz, to his eldest son—rapper, actor, and entrepreneur, Romeo Miller. Master P understood the power of ownership long before Instagram and the age of celebrity branding. Romeo credits his father’s example as the driving force in his own life. “Growing up watching one of the best and most powerful businessmen to ever do it guided me to be the man I am today,” Romeo told me. And his father’s lessons went well beyond material success. “The biggest lesson I learned from him was to simply be a good person. Owning a business and brand doesn’t matter if you aren’t giving back.”
Master P’s latest project is the film, “#Unknown,” a creative collaboration with Romeo, who serves as his coexecutive producer, and the film’s producer, writer, and director, LazRael Lison. LazRael describes the film as “a mystery thriller that gets pretty intense.” Master P plays the mayor of a town in a string of alleged unsolved murders. Meanwhile, a local novelist abandons his second book to attempt to solve the mystery of these crimes, his own life unraveling in the process.
When it comes to directing the man who is used to calling the shots, LazRael sings his praises. “Master P went over and beyond,” LazRael recalls. “It’s always so cool when you can see the executive producer also be a student.” LazRael also notes his admiration for Master P as a businessman. “He wears so many hats and that requires flexibility. As a director I’m always flexible in a sense that I can write it on paper, but when you give a soul to that character, it’s all you,” he explains. “Watching P bring [this role] to life, when people see him, they’ll think, ‘Wow, I really enjoyed that!’”
I really enjoyed my time with Master P as well. Read on—you will, too… 54

up close & personal What are the top things that have shaped the person you are today?
I would first say God, my kids, my family, and just being able to be blessed.
Is there anything in your life that was a turning point, something that completely transformed you?
I started realizing that we don’t have to dwell on our past, that it’s OK to move forward; it’s OK to better yourself. It’s OK to have faith. Nobody is perfect. That’s what it was for me. I feel like once I started having kids, I realized I have more to live for and I wanted to be around to watch them grow up, so I had to start making the right choices. And I want other people to say, “If P can do it, I can do it. It’s OK to better yourself.” One thing my grandfather always told me was, “If you want to better yourself and you want to live longer, mind your business and stay out of other people’s business.”
Growing up where you did, what gave you the power of belief you could become everything you ultimately became?
It was my grandfather, but it was also knowing if you don’t have anything, you can still make the best out of what you have. I think a lot of people don’t realize that just having life—even through this pandemic—you never know when somebody is going to walk out that door and you’re never going to see them again. When you live in poverty, you know the only way is up. That’s what pushed me and motivated me, and I think we shouldn’t want to be around people who hold us back. Even in poverty, I started realizing that if I’m going to be successful, I have to cut the negative people around me off.
I had to find something else that I loved, and God opened up a bigger door. Most of my friends that played basketball at the time I played didn’t make that much money in the NBA, and what I was able to do [with music] was just unheard of. And I could have easily just been in the music business, but I went to college and educated myself. Without the right education, I don’t think my mindset would have been the way it is today, and the way I was thinking about business.
Everybody I asked about you said the same thing—that you were never owned by a record label; you’ve always owned your own music. Was that also part of the plan?
It happened with my grandfather. He was in the war, and when he came back home, they were supposed to give him $10,000 to buy a house, and they never gave it to him. He always said, “Grandson, you need to start your own business. Start your own army.” That’s where No Limit [the name of Master P’s record label and production company] came from. My grandfather instilled that in me: “You’re not going to make it in their system. We have to create our own.” I always went against the grain. I knew I couldn’t just work for a paycheck, because I was living in the projects with 16 people in a three-bedroom apartment. I had so many people and so many mouths to feed, and I couldn’t do that with a regular paycheck. I had to own it, and I’ve always kept that mentality, to where, when you look at African-Americans and Latinos, we don’t own anything. My mindset was to change that narrative, to be able to own my own masters, to be able to build other executives. That’s where education and knowledge come in. We search and seek and pray for money, but we don’t search and seek and pray for knowledge and information. That’s what’s going to get us to our destiny.
Everybody has 24 hours. A lot of people are mad at other people and judging what other people have. That hate ends up being more Yes! I love that you said that. I pray every night with my important than the positive. It becomes more son, and we never ask for things. We say, “thank you,” important than you making it out or bettering Photography by Gip III for Central City Productions and we pray for wisdom, knowledge, clarity, health, and yourself. So, I started celebrating people. When so on. Gratitude is what attracts things to you. I was living in poverty, I started looking at other people who had a nice car or a nice house, and I started being happy for them. When you can be happy for somebody else’s success, blessings will start When you bless others, blessings will come. My most important job is to be a servant. It’s not about being a boss. It’s about being a servant and being able coming to you. to serve my community—to serve underprivileged kids, to serve the elderly, Everybody wants to get to the bag, but you are never going to get to the bag and to educate the next generation. being negative, envious, and jealous. Pride took the devil out of heaven, and he took three-fourths of the angels with him. We have to stop that pride; put Early on in your music career, you were Tupac Shakur’s opening act. What that to the side and say, “Let me invest my time into something positive, and was that like? It was crazy, because everyone was there to see Tupac. They didn’t care into me being a better person.” about me (laugh). I was happy to have just one person [in the crowd] jump up. One guy was just going crazy for me in the audience. And being on the You started off as a basketball player. Was music your Plan B? I was good at music, but I didn’t know I was that good until I actually got into road with Tupac, I said, “I’m going to turn that one fan into millions.” To it when I got [injured]. You might think you’re going in one direction, but then be able to sell 100 million records is just incredible. God will put you in another direction. When I got hurt playing basketball in college, I felt like I had failed everybody in my family. I was supposed to go [You have to] believe in something—and you don’t have to be the best to the pros, and I’m thinking I’m on my way and I’m about to take care of my because I wasn’t the best at first—I had to get into the studio and work hard. I was living on the West Coast, and I had this Southern slur in how I family and get them out of the ghetto. But then I got hurt. talked, so I had to become better. They say the best way to do that is to stay I always tell people, let your failures take you to the next level and let your in the gym, which was the studio. I wasn’t afraid to outwork everybody. failures make you great. I remember my grandfather saying, “Look, son, don’t I outworked those guys. While Tupac and all those guys were partying, sit around here and just keep worrying about what happened. You gotta go playing, and just having fun on the road, I was in the studio working. I said, “While they sleep, I’m going to be working.” make something else happen.” 56
What did Tupac think of your music?
At first, he didn’t understand it. Then, as we were getting into some of the southern markets, they started seeing how people were gravitating to my music. They started listening and saying, “This is alright.” In the end, Tupac really started liking my music, and that was a blessing, because he was the biggest star in the world of hip-hop at the time. To have him jamming to my music, I knew I was on my way.
What do you think you came into this life as Percy Robert Miller to learn, and what do you think you came here to teach?
I came into this world to be a student of the world. I’m constantly learning every day and getting better, and I also realize I came into this world to be a father to my kids. When I use the word “father,” it’s different from being a daddy. I have a lifetime commitment to my kids, and as a single dad you have to stay focused on your kids. My kids mean everything to me.
In this movie I play the mayor, and it’s a suspense thriller. It’s about being able to let people see me in different ways. In my next movies, I want to go beyond what you think you would see me doing in a movie. I’m even thinking about, like how Arnold Schwarzenegger played his role in “Kindergarten Cop.” I want to do a movie like that, set in an elementary school, playing a teacher or a principal. It’s fun to be able to portray other people and bring a character to life.
Tell me about the plot of this movie.
“#Unknown” is a suspense thriller, but it’s also about a relationship and trust and faith in somebody. The main character, his girl doesn’t believe him about what is going on with all these murders that happened years ago in this town. The movie has a great plot to it, but at the same time throughout the story your mind is constantly trying to figure out what’s true, did this happen, when did it happen? It’s also about a couple trying to figure out if they can trust each other. Is this guy who he says he is? This film asks the question: In life, do you really believe in the person you are with?
And do you ever really know somebody?
What is your philosophy for raising nine (wow!) happy, well-adjusted kids?
Exactly, that’s what it is. That’s the unknown.
You have to deal with [each kid] as their own individual. Some kids you have to scream at, some kids you have to talk to softly, and some kids you have to take them to the side and nourish them. I think basketball prepared me to be a father. When you are on the court with certain people, it’s all these different personalities, and it’s the same way with raising kids. Some kids want a lot of your attention, and some kids want to go off and do their own thing, so you have to know that and be prepared to sacrifice.
You’re used to being the boss, and on a movie set, when you are playing a character and you are working with someone like filmmaker LazRael Lison, who produced, wrote, and directed this film, are you good at taking direction from someone else? It’s all about being a team player. When you are making a film, you have to know we are working together to bring something to life, so it is never about me. I learned that from playing sports—there is no “I” in team.
Photography by Jay Snell #Unknown, starring Master P, Judd Nelson, Tom Sizemore, Denise Boutte, and Hal Ozsan, is produced, written, and directed by LazRael Lison. The movies premieres October 1st exclusively on Amazon Prime.
My life is not about me anymore. I’ll do anything for them, and I think a lot of parents are not prepared for that. They still want to go off and live their best lives, but if you have kids, you don’t get a chance to do that anymore.
What is still on your bucket list?
Being able to put together a superhero movie that is owned by us and not by Hollywood. When you look at “Black Panther”—that movie made more than a billion dollars—but it wasn’t owned by us. It looked like us. I want to change that narrative. That is a real bucket list item of mine.
You don’t think the success of “Black Panther” made big budget, studiobacked movies with an all-Black cast that much more marketable and in-demand?
See, but think about this, right… after the movie was over, we went back home, and nobody really benefited. Chadwick Boseman, his salary was $500,000, and he ended up making maybe $2-$3 million from a billiondollar movie. Robert Downey Jr. makes $70 million when he does “Iron Man,” and [“Black Panther”] was way bigger. I’m just saying, to be able to put money back into our culture and into our community off of our own work, I think that is a game-changer.
Your hand is in so many different things these days, and your movie “#Unknown” premiered on Amazon in early October. What is it about acting that appeals to you?
When you get to a certain level, you want to bring projects to life. For me, it is almost like being two different people. I can go be a businessman on
We had a great group of people, and everybody was professional, and everybody did their job. When I get on a movie set it is not about me being a boss or an executive producer. If I’m an actor, I have to play my role and you have to let the director play his role, and everybody else in the cast has to play their role if we are going to win. To be a good teacher, you have to be a good student. I’m constantly learning how to get better. I know I’m on my way to doing some great things and bringing some great projects to life. I want to keep getting better and you have to put in the work. Even when you look at somebody like a Samuel Jackson, he didn’t get stronger in his game until he was older. This is about growing for me. I don’t compare this to my music or my business or anything else I’ve done. I take acting seriously, because I want to constantly keep growing and getting better. Another one of Master P’s unique initiatives is the backing of Trion SuperCar, which he’s dubbed “the first Black-owned supercar manufacturer in America.” He credits the soon-to-be-launched car company with “adding diversity to the automotive industry, which will offer a highend line of models and a line of affordable luxury vehicles.”
this side and come back and utilize my acting skills and my fan base, and just feed them. It’s connecting to the audience and letting people see me in different ways.

Smart, funny,
You’ve been in the business for over a decade. What do you find the most challenging aspect of your job?
above all, inspiring.
You’ve said this career has always been your dream. What is your favorite part of it?
outgoing, and
These are just a few of the words that come to mind after spending time with Joelle Garguilo, TV reporter, host, producer, and overall dynamic storyteller for NBC’s NY Live. From reporting on the hottest in entertainment to sharing stories that touch people’s lives, Joelle is right where she’s always dreamt she would be. But the road to TV was anything but typical. Before taking one of the biggest leaps of her life, Joelle studied and worked in accounting and finance before switching gears. When her job at New Line Cinema was dissolved, she decided to follow her passion. “I always wanted to do something in TV, but I kept those dreams small,” she says. “I don’t know why, but I did. Maybe because I felt like I wasn't good enough, or thought I had to have the financially stable career because society said so.” After taking a few classes at NYU and then a yearlong program at the New York Film Academy, Joelle was ready to leave her old self behind and pursue a dream she always had but up until then had only whispered. “As kids, we scream our dreams out loud and genuinely believe we’re going to achieve them,” Joelle explains. “But then something happens as we get older where we hide them, and we make ourselves feel small for some reason. If there’s something you want to do, go for it, because I think it’s sad if you look back at the ‘What if’s’ when it’s free to try.” Along with the work she does both in front of and behind the camera, Joelle’s biggest role is that of mom to two little girls for whom she is setting an example as she leads the way. BELLA sat down with the hard-working and talented TV host for an extremely candid conversation about her career, her life as a mom, and the way in which a near-death experience as a child helped to shape the woman she is today.

So much work goes into three minutes of TV. First, it’s finding the story, the hours of footage to go through, handling it with care, and then crafting it.
It’s the people I meet and the worlds I get to step in to. I step into worlds that aren’t mine and as evolving people, I think it’s so important. It’s given me empathy, understanding, and it’s made me a better human being. There was a time when I was all about entertainment, and I still love it…I love a great interview. But as the world started to change, I realized the importance of using my platform, giving a voice to people who don’t typically get the microphone on such a large scale. It just takes one person to make a difference. When you shift from self to service, I feel like magic happens.
A career highlight for you was the chance to interview Oprah Winfrey. Tell us about that experience.
Oprah told me I had it! I was on the red carpet, and these people talk to everyone, they’re asked the same questions and I pride myself on coming up with questions that will get a good answer and that other people aren’t asking. I remember it was her and Steven Spielberg, and I asked them both a question, he answered first. As she was answering, he’s smiling because he’s thinking, this girl is getting a compliment from Oprah. Even Spielberg understood the significance. That moment will always stay with me.
Who’s on your interview bucket list?
Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears—they’ve been on my list for a very long time!
In a previous interview, you talked about the challenges of being a working mom and the importance of finding your tribe.
I had some rude awakenings in the industry after having my first child. Pre-Gianna, I was all rose-colored glasses. When I came back from maternity leave there were situations that hardened me, which unfortunately happens to too many working mothers. I realized then the importance of finding your people, the ones you can really count on. Leaning on colleagues (especially my current boss), friends, and family...I can't stress enough the importance of a support system.

getting to know What advice do you have for anyone looking to follow your footsteps or hoping to just make a change? Know when it’s time to walk away. So many people become stuck in a job where their potential isn’t being noticed—women especially— and we look to others for approval. Just follow your heart and your passion, forget about the noise. It’s also OK to fall flat on your face. For me, personally, I have fallen hard and multiple times, but I think that’s where the magic happens. You don’t see it at the time, but I found myself and my calling along the way in the messy moments as well as the pictureperfect ones.
As a mom, what lessons do you hope your girls will take away from your experiences?
So often in life people will tell you everything you can’t do; why aren’t we telling people everything they can do? Every day when I’m walking the girls to school, I make them say, “I am smart, I am beautiful, and I can accomplish anything I want.” I want them to have a voice. I grew up very shy and in the background. I teach them you have a choice; you don’t always have to do what others want you to. So often I took the safe route because it’s what I thought I was supposed to do, and I want them to know what their dreams are, not what dreams other people push on them. If they can identify what it is they want to achieve, they can do it.
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
When looking ahead, what do you see for yourself ?
That’s a great question because I’m such an open book. When people know you work in TV and they see this certain image, they think you must have a perfect life, but I say I am a ‘puttogether mess.’ As a kid I was a Type-A perfectionist, and I had a bad eating disorder when I was younger. I developed bulimia when I was 12 years old and didn’t tell my parents until I was about 15. Because I had to be so perfect, I said I would never do it again, but then I stopped eating and developed anorexia. I was hospitalized and almost died. My parents sent me to a hospital in Philadelphia where I got therapy and really learned a lot. That time shaped me, and from then on, I became a reformed perfectionist. Anyone who knows me well will say, “That girl is a hot mess, but she always gets it done.” I don’t always have it together, but I make it work. I think a lot of that comes from that near-death experience as a kid. I learned a lot of lessons at a young age.
It all goes back to dusting off those dreams. I’ve always wanted my own show and it’s time to put it out there. Within the next five years I’d love to come up with something. I don’t know what it looks like or where it will live, but I’d love to do something where I can continue to shine a light on people who deserve the spotlight but don’t often get it. A podcast is next, for sure. I do these interviews with people who have such interesting stories and I’m captivated by them, so look out for that in the near future!

he was born in the 80s as Misty Danielle Copeland in Kansas City, Missouri. One of six siblings, she grew up with a single mother, moving around a lot and dealing with the effects of financial instability. When Misty moved with her family from Kansas City to San Pedro, California, her first formal encounter with dance was on the drill team of her middle school. She had taught herself to do handstands and cartwheels; in her mind, Misty created a world of expression through dance. She saw herself performing in front of crowds with the most important applause coming from her mother, of course.
“

That once shy, quiet girl who found herself through movement is the woman we know today as a principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre. Misty became the first Black woman in the company's 75-year history to be promoted to that position in 2015. Some of Misty’s most iconic classical ballet roles include Odette/Odile in “Swan Lake,” Juliet in “Romeo & Juliet,” “Giselle,” “Manon,” “Coppelia,” Kitri in “Don Quixote,“ and “Firebird,” to name a few. As have many others, my love for ballet led me to follow Misty’s career. But it wasn’t until I read her story that I found myself reading parts of my own. Her openness and willingness to share her journey and break barriers is not only admirable, but the basis of her life’s work. I had the opportunity to chat with Misty for this very special Arts + Culture cover story. Read on…

cover story How does your start in ballet compare to the shift you helped create in the industry today?
I never imagined that my career could have taken me where it has or given me the purpose and responsibility that I feel. When ballet found me at 13 years old on the basketball court of my local Boys and Girls Club, ballet was an opportunity to experience beauty and to feel a part of a community I didn't know I could belong to. It gave me an escape from my hectic and unstable home life, as well as a way of expressing myself. But what it's become is unbelievable.
What nugget of wisdom can you give to a young girl or boy wanting to follow in your footsteps? Remind yourself often why you dance. We tend to get caught up in the work or get down on ourselves and compare our work and worth to others, but we dance because it’s an incredible experience. Don’t be afraid to surround yourself with a strong circle of supporters who will be there for you through it all. Believe in yourself!
Misty’s newest book, “Black Ballerinas: My Journey to Our Legacy,” will publish in November. She is also working on her first project, “Flower,” a silent arts activism film that uses dance as a way to raise awareness about homelessness.
I believed immediately that dance and art would give me the tools to succeed in other aspects of life, but to see and experience my personal growth have surpassed what I imagined. The fact that my ballet career has given me a platform and voice to carry on the legacies of so many Black dancers who opened the door for me is not at all what I thought I'd be able to do. I feel it is my responsibility as a Black ballerina to share my craft with my community and beyond, to broaden our audiences and to educate others about those Black and brown dancers who have contributed to this art form and do not get the recognition.
What has been your favorite/least favorite part of this job?
The favorite part of my job is that I get to do what I love for a living! That’s pretty special. I get to travel the world and use dance to communicate with people everywhere. The downside is the institutional exclusion and the lack of diversity. That’s definitely my least favorite part of classical ballet. I have found what I love about this art form, which is the root and purity of the incredible technique that has stayed relevant for over 400 years and can transcend cultures, but ballet also neglects entire communities and doesn’t tell the stories of a broader people.
What has been the best advice you’ve ever received in order to “make it”?
There’s so much incredible advice I’ve been given throughout my career. Don’t let other people’s words define you. Surround yourself with people who believe in you, love you, and will give you feedback that will help you grow. Don’t compare yourself to other people. Stand in your uniqueness; don’t run from it. 68
Which has been your favorite career moment to date?
If I had to choose one, I would say my favorite moment was in 2012 when I made my NYC debut at the Metropolitan Opera House as “Firebird.” It was my first principal role in a classical work and the first time I’d ever seen the theater more than half full of Black and brown people. It was an extremely special evening and following that performance, the demographic of people coming to see me and American Ballet Theatre perform changed. When people see it, they feel they can be it and will support and join in.
You are literally in our history books. What do you hope will be your legacy?
I hope my legacy will be to carry on the legacy of others. I hope to be that bridge and conduit to the past and future of Black dancers.
An avid philanthropist, Misty is also an ambassador for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, of which she is also an alum, and MindLeaps, an arts education program based in Rwanda that helps young people get off the streets and into an academic setting to help enhance their lives.
What’s next for you?
More dancing, more books to write, and so many more ways to bring this art form to more people through my production company, Life in Motion Productions; through the newly-established Misty Copeland Foundation; through the amazing partnerships and collaborations I’ve been so fortunate to have with incredible brands; and through my commitment to art as activism. There is a lot of work to do, but it’s worth it.

miracle
That is the mantra that has been in my mind for four years. I escaped, and the healing process was just beginning.
The why. Before I tell my story, I want to explore why I did this. Why am I creating this body of work and making it public? It was the courage of other survivors speaking up about their experience, along with doctors and professionals who write about coping with abusive relationships, that ultimately saved my life. I feel that if I had to experience this situation, one thing I can do to honor the wisdom that I have gained is to share my story and hopefully reach people who need to hear it. I’ve always expressed my inner mind through art, a visual diary. I relentlessly created art while living through a 12-year abusive relationship. Creating art was my escape but also a way to retain my sense of self. Being an artist is my identity, and I felt that no one could take that away from me. Isolation is used in abusive relationships. Posting my artwork to Instagram was a way for me to connect with the outside world. As my followers were growing, I was falling apart. It seemed that everyone in the world supported me except the one person who should. At the same time the lines were always so blurred. Was I being supported, or constantly torn apart? Was it genius, or madness? There were moments of what seemed like support, but the fear outweighed it. I was constantly in a heightened state of anxiety, and my body was rebelling against me. I had to save my life.
that happened before I finally escaped. I had so much to weigh in my mind. I invested time, money, love, energy, years of my life. Dreams, hopes, career aspirations. The relationship was presented as idealized love; it was too good to be true, at the same time, it was too horrible to be love.
How do I unravel this intricate mess? I worked with my family, a few very close friends, my doctors, and an amazing therapist who guided me down the path of preparation, but ultimately, I had to walk through the door, and it had to be my decision and action alone.
You’re never
100% ready.
I was doing laundry in my apartment building basement. Things were getting increasingly volatile, and I didn’t want to go back into my apartment. I saw the number 8 on the cycle countdown on the clothes dryer, and I knew that was the amount of time I had to make the decision. I paced frantically during those 8 minutes. The buzzer went off, I packed my laundry bags, and left for good. I escaped with two full laundry bags, my purse, and my family to welcome me home. That was my situation. In that moment I thought to myself, “8 Minutes to Freedom.” I had no idea what it would evolve into, but it was seared into my memory.
The journey. I spent the next four years reconnecting with friends and family, re-learning how to be myself. I felt excited about the freedom of expressing myself without fear. This expression ranged from my clothing choices and my home decorations to my artwork. As exciting and positive as it was, I also had to battle a lot of internal thoughts that were haunting remnants of my old life. It’s messy and difficult, but also a miracle. I pushed through and kept doing my research on survivors and their stories. I was welcomed with open arms back into the lives of people from whom I was isolated for so long. I wake up every day grateful that this is my reality now, and I can only compare it to having a second chance, a rebirth, a new lease on life. 71

The
grant.
In late 2019, I was presented with the opportunity for an art grant. I had to come up with a proposal, and I had no idea what the project would be. After a few days of thinking, I was driving to a friend’s house in Brooklyn, and had to pull over on the side of the road. “8 Minutes to Freedom!” I exclaimed to myself and started crying.
Breaking Point. Metamorphosis. Journey. Triumph. I received the grant from Staten Island Arts/NYC Department of Cultural Affairs in early 2020. I was both elated and terrified. I was now committed to this project, and I had to maintain the courage to not only create the work but release it and my story to the public. I knew that it was the courage of the many who have come before me speaking about their experience with domestic abuse that helped me. I knew I wanted to tell the story in a way that was hopeful and uplifting—to use my experience and skills to open a dialogue about a difficult but important topic. I felt a responsibility, but also an opportunity for healing.
The
pandemic.
COVID-19 hit. Lockdown started. What could I do now but create the artwork? I used drawings from my visual diaries to be the basis of the larger works. It felt strangely parallel to what we were experiencing as a collective whole. Isolation, uncertainly, fear, trauma, hope, healing. As I was exploring these concepts in my paintings. I felt they were speaking in a new way that was being felt worldwide. To heal, you have to put the work in to tend to the wounds. Healing is non-linear, but it’s real, and there is hope.
What was originally conceived as an in-person exhibit now had to be re-imagined, as galleries and venues were closed. During this time, I confided in close friends. Talking to people was like exploring a metaphysical treasure map. Somehow people said things to me that illuminated the next step in my journey. Through some brainstorming, the idea was hatched to create a film to exhibit the paintings. I had spent the early parts of the pandemic walking though nature parks on Staten Island, and I discovered many areas that had natural beauty. I decided to film the artwork in locations around the island, throughout the seasons. I composed the music, and in turn the film became somewhat of a love letter to the place I call home. 72

The film.
Redefining
joy.
I feel excited and happy when I look at this exhibit. The artwork, the film, the music. When I create the art, products, and prints, there is joy. How can this be? My friend, Bahia, describes it as alchemy. Where I used to feel darkness has been brought to light through creating this work. I still grapple with feelings of compassion and grief for the relationship. But I do know that I feel like myself again now, only stronger and wiser. Now, looking back, I realize how strong I had to be. I see my past self and have so much admiration for her. She survived. Maybe I had to go through this so I can create this work and help others.
Photogaphy by Irma Jace, Hair by Concetta Linea, Makeup by Stephanie DeNisco
What I learned by sharing my story is that this scenario is more prevalent than I ever imagined. If you, or someone you know, is in a toxic or abusive relationship, please find hope in this work. My intention is that it helps you make decisions to save your future. I know that not everyone has a complete support system, but you need to ask for help in whatever way possible. There are resources and people who want to help you. It’s a leap of faith that something better is on the other side, and this artwork as a testament to that hope.
Triumph. You’re never alone, please visit 8MinutesToFreedom.com for a list of resources and next steps. Scan this exclusive QR Code to watch the film!

LA BRUJA casts an
INSPIRATIONAL
spell
By Vivian Nacionales Photography by Charles Diaz
74
K
nown in poetry and hiphop circles as “La Bruja,” multifaceted performer Caridad De La Luz, a Bronx, Nuyorican, veteran word slinger and slayer + spiritual soul, shared an inside look on how she draws inspiration from everyday joys, struggles, current events, politics, and her own Latinaness. Why the nickname, La Bruja (The Witch)?
Are you the first writer or poet in your family? What sparked your interest?
I am the first writer of my family, but poetic recitation was taught to me by my maternal great grandmother who did not know how to read or write, but who had a memory of gold. She was the first to encourage me and teach me how to recite—that was how I became interested in poetry.
From where do you draw inspiration for your poetry?
Inspiration is all around me. I can write about anything, but I do find that trying to understand my cultural identity and purpose in this world has been the greatest source of poetry. Love, of course, has also fueled so much of my writing. Struggle and injustice have also been a huge focus of my work.
Where have you performed?
La Bruja is not a nickname, it is rooted in my spiritual identity. I was raised practicing indigenous rituals, speaking to spirit guides, and learning ancient healing modalities. In Spanish, it’s called Espiritismo (Spiritualism) and Curanderismo (Holistic Healer). I was also taught to read tarot cards from a very young age. My parents were married on Halloween too.
I have performed internationally in countries like Cuba, Poland, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Mexico, as well as across the United States for decades.
What’s next for La Bruja?
I completed two short films this past summer, “Kokomo” (directed by Farah Jabir), and “Dancer” (by Kris Mercado). I became a member of the Board of Directors at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, where I began my career. I just wrote a poem called “Soul of a Nation” that aired on ABC (“Corazón De América”) in September, which was wellreceived.
Spoken and written words are my artistic foundation. When we write words, it is called “spelling,” so we are creating spells with our words. I began calling myself La Bruja in 1996 before anyone was identifying themselves publicly as a Bruja. I created a movement; now there are countless women embracing their divine feminine power as well as calling themselves Brujas, but I was the first and I’m proud of that. It was a feminist choice, a political choice, and a way to decolonize the contemporary meaning of Bruja. It worked.
I have also been developing my own art cultivation space and spiritual sanctuary in the Bronx since 2015, and there are several grants I am up for that will determine how soon I can realize that mission. Wish me luck!
How long have you been performing poetry?
I began performing as La Bruja in 1996, but I began performing poetry for my family and writing my own written language at the age of 3.
There is a lyric in Hamilton: “Why do you write like you’re running out of time? Write day and night like you’re running out of time.” Does this describe you at all? Is writing something you are driven to do?
We take time for granted—I’m guilty of it—but I do my best to write my deepest feelings, ideas, and personal views to share with those who care to listen with the hopes of creating positive change. This pandemic did shift my urgency level, because the trauma of witnessing so much death made me see how the most important moment we will ever have is right now.
Good luck! What are your nextlevel goals?
I want to direct my own feature film one day and began filming, directing, and editing my own music videos and documentary shorts soon after the pandemic began. Those videos can be seen on my YouTube channel.

CONTINUING THE FIGHT
Progress FOR
his year has seen a record-breaking number of anti-LGBTQ+ bills enacted in states, surpassing 2015 as the worst year on record in recent history. In addition, news of violence against the transgender and gender non-conforming community has been at its highest, making resources for members of the Queer community more essential than ever. With 40+ years in service, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is answering the call and putting the LGBTQ+ agenda at the forefront.
HRC started in 1980 as a fund to support pro-equality congressional candidates, of which there were very few at the time. Since then, the organization has grown in size and scope of work. The group is now responsible for extending their reach, educating, and activating 52 million equality voters in elections across the U.S., as well as establishing 11 programs and initiatives that positively impact the LGBTQIA+ community around the world. Today, with an emphasis on joining “the right side of history,” HRC is readier than ever to help deliver on the mission to end discrimination and advance equality for all Queer individuals whether it be in schools, the workplace, public accommodations, and other spaces. Like so many organizations, HRC adapted to the pandemic environment through virtual initiatives, including combating stigma and anti-trans discrimination. With its Transgender Justice Initiative, HRC is offering resources that uplift the trans and gender non-conforming experience. Some of those programs include a partnership with Trans Can Work to connect transgender and non-binary job seekers with work opportunities. HRC.org
These marginalized groups, particularly within those of color, experience higher unemployment and underpayment than their cisgender peers. With national By Jonathan Calixto unemployment still being a popularized issue due to COVID-19, these communities stand a greater chance of being cut off from economic security and opportunity. This initiative is one of many that HRC is focused on throughout the end of the year, and is a testament to their goal of honoring the memories of victims of antitransgender violence with action. Over the last few decades HRC has strengthened LGBTQ+ voters, and as the group heads into the 2022 midterms, there is a focus on the importance of passing the Equality Act. This bill would provide consistent and explicit anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people across key areas of life, including employment, housing, credit, education, public spaces and services, federally funded programs, and jury service. Why is this still a problem? Millions of people are left vulnerable to the federal laws that don’t provide explicit laws against discrimination; passing the Equality Act would ensure these human rights protections. As mentioned on HRC.org, “everyone should have a fair chance to provide a home for their families and access essential services without fear of harassment or discrimination.” As Margaret Mead, an American anthropologist and activist for societal issues once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.” This stands true to the work the Human Rights Campaign is doing by empowering marginalized voices until they have reached equality for all.

Holiday
breakfast casserole By Ceylone Boothe-Grooms
I seriously live for the holiday season! I am all about the decorations, traditions, and all the hustle and bustle. The one thing I’ve tried to perfect over the years is the perfect Christmas morning breakfast. I present to you a very easy holiday breakfast casserole. Simply prep it the night before (right after you help Santa unload all the gifts or head to the Menorah to celebrate), then pop it in the oven in the morning.
88
Prep time: 15 minutes Bake time: 75 minutes Serves: 9-12 INGREDIENTS: • 10 eggs • 3 cups of shredded potatoes (frozen is fine) • 3 cups of shredded cheese (I used Kraft’s Four-Cheese mixture) • ½ lb bacon (you can substitute with turkey bacon, sausage crumbles, or mushrooms) • ½ cup of half and half • 1tsp salt • 1 tsp pepper • ½ tsp paprika • 1 tsp dried or fresh parsley for garnish INSTRUCTIONS:
Night before: • Fry bacon; set aside • Whisk eggs • Add half and half to egg mixture; set aside • Use cooking spray to coat the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish • Layer potatoes, followed by 2 cups of shredded cheese, and bacon • Pour egg mixture evenly over casserole • Add salt and pepper to taste • Add last cup of shredded cheese and top with sprinkled paprika • Refrigerate overnight
The next morning: • Preheat oven to 350⁰ • Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until a knife can come cleanly out center of casserole • Garnish with fresh or dried parsley
This dish is the main attraction on a table filled with bagels, muffins, fresh fruit, hot cocoa, and mimosas!

Generous Celebration
hristmas is my favorite thing to celebrate, and the holiday season is my favorite time of the year. So, as we enter this festive time of 2021 and the year comes to a close, I want to focus upon a personal tradition of mine and encourage you to also start your own traditions of generosity.
’Tis the season for
By Yolanda F. Johnson
orange marmalade (a tea-time must!). Local artisans are among those severely impacted by the pandemic, so pushing a bit of business their way at this time of year can be a major—and generous—boost.
ASSEMBLE A “GIVING CIRCLE”
There are many ways to be generous during this time of year, from donating to food banks, making year-end donations to nonprofits, volunteering for holiday events and projects, etc. Staying true to the philanthropic lifestyle during the holidays, I personally always look forward to my annual Christmas Tea Party. It’s a beautiful, festive event, one in which I invite my nearest and dearest by for an afternoon of fun and merriment. I bake and create scones (chocolate peanut butter is the fave!), cookies (including a Dutch Almond variety that folks think are store-bought—I’ll take that as a compliment), and other deliciousness from scratch. There are teas from around the world, and it’s the one time each year that my prized teapot collection sees the light of day.
This year, I’ll ask all invited guests to add a donation to a giving circle “pot” of money. To get everyone started ahead of the event, I’ll send out a few suggestions from those organizations and causes I support and will ask others to do the same. During the event, we’ll have a brief discussion on some of the areas of good work that matter to us most and decide on one or two charities that will receive the funds. The per-person amount is not set; it’s whatever is meaningful and/or realistic for any given person. To top it all off, my own giving vehicle, YFJ Philanthropies, will match the amount given by the group. This will make an even greater impact, and it’s a fun experience making the decision as a group.
During the pandemic last Christmas, I held it virtually, so this year, I’m looking forward to hopefully joining everyone in person if it’s truly safe to do so. Either way, it will be fun and festive, and this year I’m giving a special nod to generosity both monetary and through the items used for the gathering.
Perhaps in lieu of a giving circle, you can work with a local organization like a food bank or nursing home to see what items they might need and then ask your guests to bring one or more of those items with them to your event in lieu of a hostess gift. There’s no better feeling that dropping off these much-needed items to help those in need.
Here are my 3 top tips for bringing the people you love together in the spirit of holiday generosity:
Whether you are back together with loved ones this year, or you’ll continue to celebrate virtually, there is always an opportunity to enjoy the season while giving back and helping others. As many of us celebrate Jesus’ birth this year, may we also listen to His advice, which transcends backgrounds or differences: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

How can you support local artisans and craftspeople through your own plans for the holidays? Scout your local farmers’ markets to find new options. I recently discovered an incredible apiary in New Jersey, which woman-owned business and a bakery that makes the most incredible

CELEBRATING CULTURE THROUGH TRADITIONS By Geraldine “Gerry” Viggiani
98
W
hen we are asked about our culture, we often describe it through the traditions we keep. Culture is encompassed by the whole of a group or a society. It is a combination of knowledge, laws, values, and beliefs shared by a group. Culture can dictate what you eat, play, worship, where you work, the language you speak, how you celebrate, how you manage your health, your social status, and so much more.
Entrenched in history, culture is developed and passed on for generations until it becomes the norm for that society. Often its roots come from a belief, value, or even necessity for health or safety. Those needs or beliefs might not continue to exist today but are so woven into a society’s identity that it becomes who, what, how, and why of its people and how they are connected. Traditions, on the other hand, are the events and customs that honor the culture of the group. These events or behaviors become deeply ingrained in culture as they are practiced repeatedly through history. Traditions help keep customs alive and help the people of a society feel connected to their culture and each other.
We also love to celebrate anniversaries and birthdays. These celebrations include specific types of food, including traditional holiday food as well as Italian food. We listen to holiday music, and decorate the house to fit the occasion, i.e., a Christmas tree, Thanksgiving turkey, Easter egg hunts, and birthday parties. Family, friends and even our pets are central to these celebrations. We keep these traditions as our parents did, and we added new ones as our children grew like game and movie nights. Think about this more on your own… What is your culture? How do you practice it? How does it make you feel? What are your traditions that keep that culture alive?
5 WAYS TO DISCOVER MORE ABOUT YOUR CULTURE (OR EVEN ANOTHER CULTURE YOU MAY BE CURIOUS ABOUT)
1 2 3 4 5
I often share with my clients that human beings are herd animals. We survive through highly coordinated groups. As individuals we pick up social cues and work together to align our behavior with those around us. That said, nonconformity triggers a primal sense of danger. Culture allows us to feel safe and connected to the herd. Because of this aspect we can feel securely attached to a group, and that can allow us to grow within that safe space.
There are many ways traditions are kept. Holidays, for one, can be steeped in culture and traditions. It can be a time of gatherings, specific décor, special food, songs, dance, and even sacrifice and atonement. Religion binds people together with a common spiritual belief through ways to worship, a moral code, how to cook and eat, pilgrimages, and much more.
Many cultures also set traditions around the celebration of a person or a pivotal event, such as birthdays, anniversaries, professions, leaders, and ends of conflict. There may be parades, parties, barbeques, galas, and rallies with particular focus on cultural beliefs and values of that society. There are also darker sides to custom, culture, and tradition, such as female genital mutilation in Africa, honor killings, or early child marriages that despite illegality, shunning, and education are so ingrained in culture they continue even today.
My family is a mix of British and European descent but is mostly American. We are Catholic and mostly follow those values. We celebrate both American holidays of Memorial, Veterans’, and Labor Day with picnics and parades, in addition to holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter.
Social media has given us a lens to view other cultures; we can review literature on culture and traditions, watch movies, and observe, but the best way to learn about culture and tradition is to be curious. Listen to stories, learn about the origins, and ask questions when appropriate without judgment. Learning about your own or other people’s cultures demystifies, reduces fear, and allows us to embrace those differences. It opens our minds to diverse experiences and therefore allows us to move to a higher self-actualization.
Visit your homeland virtually or in person. Go to museums, visit relatives, dine in local restaurants, and interview family. Or if virtual, Google your homeland and see what comes up.
Make a traditional meal. Ask family members for treasured recipes or find a cookbook with traditional meal preparations. Share the meal with family or friends.
Celebrate a traditional holiday. Decorate, listen to music, dance, and gather with others who also celebrate the holiday. You can find some of these events by joining social media groups sponsored by members of your culture.
Learn a craft or the language of your culture. You can take a class or join a club specific to your culture.
Discover your genealogy by signing up for a genealogy search website. Popular sites like Ancestry.com help you to sift through historical records that you can then read more about. You can even take this a step further and take a DNA test.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE
FAMILY TRADITION DURING THE HOLIDAYS? VANESSA COPPES
CEO & EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
We have two very special traditions in my little family. I am especially heartened every year around the holidays because we get to show our kids the merging of two very different cultures. On New Year’s Eve it is tradition in the Dominican Republic to eat 12 grapes. Each grape represents a month of the year, and as you eat each one you set an intention, make a wish, or set a new goal for the year to come. In my husband’s family, it’s tradition to eat cabbage on New Year’s Day. This is meant to set the tone for happiness and prosperity in the year ahead.
JENNIFER DECILLIS PUBLISHER
Preparing to spend the holidays with my family is my favorite time of year. One of my favorite memories that we still keep alive today is gathering around my mom’s Christmas tree on Christmas morning to open gifts. No matter our ages or physical distance, my brothers and I still go home each Christmas morning to see my mom and grandmother and curl up on the couch with holiday music playing (we love the Elvis Christmas album), cinnamon rolls in the oven, and presents shared between us. It is such a beautiful, nostalgic time that brings us all together and truly fills my heart.
GINA LAGUARDIA EDITORIAL DIRECTOR
I’m a big “tradition person,” so holidays in our house are loaded with them. My all-time favorite, however, has to be our family’s “Joy Jar.” Throughout the year, we each add items— ticket stubs, wristbands from events, napkins from a special party, etc.—to one of three glass jars we have on our dining room side table. The jars serve as a repository for souvenirs and reminders from the special events, occasions, and fun memories that color our days. Every January 1st, we gather around the table and empty the jars’ contents and relive, piece by piece, the fun of the past year. It’s a heartwarming, meaningful way for us to reminisce about our crazy family adventures, cherished moments, and ultimate joys that we may have otherwise forgotten in the hecticness of the holiday season—and life. I’ve boxed up all of the Joy Jars from when my girls were growing up and look forward to a January 1st in the future in which we empty them once again to take a long, joyful stroll down memory lane. 100

I love making bow-tie cookies with my mom around the holidays. When I think about it, I can recall the smell, taste, and texture of making these treats and it instantly brings a smile to my face and reminds me of my family.

Growing up Jewish has been more of a musical journey than a spiritual one for me. At Shababa, the Jewish singing group my family was a part of, my mother’s and my voice were featured acapella on the “Siyahamba” album when I was in the first grade. As long as I had heard the song, I could harmonize with my mom as she sang it, and to me that was magical. Taking piano lessons helped me hear what notes were called, but I didn’t need to memorize anything to enjoy singing duets with my younger brother. As he matured and his voice deepened, mine remained high, and we have been creating melodies together every year on Chanukah. As we light the candles for Shabbat, my mother and I lead my dad and siblings in prayer as we feel the warmth of the firelight. Whether we celebrate the holidays in Palm Beach or New York City, it is always filled with family, great food, and music.

My favorite holiday tradition is baking cookies with my mom, sister, and grandma. Every year we make hundreds of cookies to share with family and friends. We start early in the day, and end late at night, but the best part is taste-testing every batch right out of the oven!
When we were growing up, we would celebrate Hanukkah by getting a different present from our parents for eight nights straight. As little girls, this was a dream come true! One night we would get something like a Barbie doll, another night we might get a board game we could play together as a family, and on other nights we would get chocolate candy or books. It didn’t matter how big or small the gift was. It was just exciting to be surprised and spend that festive time with our family. But the most fun was lighting the menorah candles each night and sitting around singing Hanukkah songs. We didn’t always know all the words, but we would laugh and sing as we watched the candles burn. It always felt so cozy and joyous. We still carry on this tradition with our children.
JANENE MASCARELLA BEAUTY DIRECTOR
It began when I was in the third grade. I would carefully creep down the hall and turn on the Christmas tree lights. I’d lie beside it and make a wish. They started off so simple: a baby doll, a Barbie dream house. As I got older, my wishes grew deeper: A call from a boy in my class. And then they were more meaningful: Please let it be benign. The houses have changed, the trees have changed, but what has remained the same for over 40 years are the wishes. Now I share the tradition with my daughter. We place two couch pillows on the floor side by side, look up into the twinkling lights, and make our wishes. 101

the love files | make love a masterpiece
artistic the
relationship By Jarrod Thalheimer
A
re you an artist? Do you wish you were? Believe it or not, if you have ever been in a relationship, you have experienced an artistic challenge of such unfathomable scope and magnitude that to not call you an artist would be a crime. How else would you quantify the lover’s struggle to express oneself through hope and dreams and beauty, all the while being weighed down by fear, insecurities, confusion, and the unrelenting grind of daily life? It’s the very definition of an artist.
104
Here is Vincent Van Gogh: “I am always hoping to make a discovery here, to express the feelings of two lovers by a marriage of two complementary colors, their minglings and their oppositions, the mysterious vibrations of kindred tones.” Could a better case for the artistic relationship be made? And this is from a guy who worked incessantly to please his parents, who tried to marry his cousin, and who spent much of his youth being forced to stare at a tombstone with his own name on it. I haven’t even mentioned the whole cutting-off-his-own-ear thing.
Be your own worst critic
The temptation for an artist to fall in love with their own handiwork is real, and it always leads inexorably to sub-par work. The same goes for your relationship. Be honest about things. If you’re phoning it in, admit it, and then change. If you are not giving your relationship your best, then do something about it. You need to be straight with yourself. It’s the only way to discover your weaknesses or find your blind spots–all things that need improvement. No one likes a critic, but they are critically necessary.
Expect nothing, but aim for everything
So, considering relationships as art, does it not make sense to use the tools and practices of an artist to help them grow and prosper? I should think so. Indulge us…
There are no guarantees for the artist, or the lover. Just because you put yourself out there doesn’t mean what you offer will be reciprocated, or even appreciated. But that can’t stop you from trying.
Treat it like it matters
Put everything about yourself–heart and soul–into your relationship. The picture you paint is your own, but only when you use all the colors you have to offer can the other person do the same. If they don’t appreciate what you have, so be it. But you will have given fully and truthfully of yourself. That’s what matters. Aim high–always.
For any piece to truly become art it must first matter. If an artist cannot care about a piece, if they cannot invest their heart into making it real, then it doesn’t matter. And if it doesn’t matter, then it should be abandoned. Make a decision: Does your relationship truly matter to you? If so, then put in the work; care about it. Only by treating it with respect and the reverence of something that matters will it ever aspire to something more.
Work on it a little each day
No artist expects their greatest creation to spring fully formed from them in a single day. Or a single week. Or even years. The real artist knows it takes time, patience, and everyday effort. Trying, learning, failing, and then succeeding—every single day. The accumulation is the goal, the understanding that only time and effort brings. Stop thinking that one or two grand gestures are enough to make your relationship rock. Long-lasting, deeply felt relationships are not built on calendared or semi-annual declarations of passion and bigdollar gifts. It’s the little brushstrokes, the tiny bits of love mixed with daily concern offered within and throughout; the minutia of every day spent together. It is only through these consistent and repetitive practices that a relationship of note can form. And it is worth it.
Put it on display–never hide it in a closet
All artists know that for art to become what it is meant to be—for it to truly be appreciated—it must be displayed. Like the most incredible painting or sculpture, your relationship is special and unique and beautiful, and it must be shared with others. Go out, share it with your family and your friends, and participate in the world. The saddest thing ever is for a work of art to be hidden away behind a locked door. Don’t ever let that happen to your relationship.
Copy the masters
Artists do this all the time; so should you. Look at the people around you with great relationships. The ones you can’t help but admire. Maybe it’s your parents (maybe not!), or grandparents, an uncle or aunt, a good friend. Watch what they do and copy what they do. It’s a great way to start. And it will let you build on their example as you customize and improve it to suit the specifics of the relationship you are in. No one ever said you had to start from scratch. And if you must copy to begin, then copy from the best!
Consistency is key
Never give up…keep trying. If it matters, then it’s worth sticking to. There will be many days that are hard, tough, and maybe even awful, but those are the times that test your resolve. They become the very glue that you need to push higher. Don’t throw in the towel because you “aren’t feeling it”–everyone has a bad day–artists especially. Keep sculpting, molding, and painting. Eventually, something of beauty will emerge. The consistent hand is a steady hand, and a steady hand produces miracles.
Don’t compare yourself to others
This one can be tricky–especially when you copy the greats—but it is important never to get in the habit of directly comparing your relationship to anyone else’s. Just like the artist who looks at another’s work and feels shame or embarrassment toward her own, you must resist the urge to compare and remember that your voice, vision, and situation remains unique and belong to you alone. You cannot ever have the same relationship as anyone else any more than two pieces of seemingly identical art could ever actually be the same. It cannot. Trust that the picture you are painting is your own and resist the temptation of measuring other relationships by your own. They are as different and unique as your own, and they always will be. Focus instead on what you can control and nothing else. 105

4ways to
fall in love with yourself By Carmelia Ray, Celebrity Matchmaker and Online Dating Expert
106
T
he pandemic has highlighted the importance of connection, communication, and companionship in our romantic relationships. Many singles I coach believe that finding the right partner will somehow make them whole and complete and fill any voids or lack in their lives. That’s why they tend to place their time and energy on others, seeking validation and approval from everyone else but themselves. When you learn to fall in love with yourself, I firmly believe you will naturally attract romantic partners who align with your attitude, values, and goals. As a matchmaker speaking to over 65,000+ singles worldwide, I know how important self-love is in healthy relationships. Many singles shared a primary reason for breaking up with their partner: they're pessimistic, angry, depressed, or unhappy. It's important to remind yourself that self-care is not selfish—it's essential.
Here are 4 ways you can learn to love yourself:
Take yourself out on dates I love "me time." Taking yourself out on dates will teach you what you like and don't like when it comes to anything you want to explore in the world. When you can learn the kinds of foods, activities, music, and places you enjoy, you can share those things with someone you love. It may take time to understand what lights you up and which activities you could do without. How would you know if you enjoy playing golf, going to the theatre, painting, or enjoying Indian food if you've never tried them? Once you discover you don't need someone to have fun with and experience new things, you will change your perspective from needing someone to do something with to choosing someone to share things with. I would advise you try something new at least once a week, even if it's as simple as testing out a new recipe, buying a new pair of shoes, or watching a new series on Netflix that catches your attention. Treat yourself the way you'd want a romantic partner to treat you on a date.
You will attract the people and outcomes your energy vibrates, so vibrate with kindness. If you know your “love language,” then speak to yourself that way. If it’s giving gifts, go ahead and buy yourself something special (and it doesn’t have to break the bank). If it’s “words of affirmation,” wake up every morning, look in the mirror, and compliment yourself.
Adopt positive habits Bad habits = bad outcomes. Positive habits = Positive results.
Loving yourself includes: • Developing positive habits such as exercising • Drinking more water • Eating healthy • Meditating • Waking up early to crush your day • Getting eight hours of sleep • Daily affirmations • Afternoon naps Create a routine that gets you in the habit of loving yourself and aligns with your goals—feeding your mind, body, and spirit with great things for you to nourish your soul. It takes 21 days to form a habit, which can translate into a total lifestyle change that’s good for you.
Your network is your selfworth: Surround yourself with supportive people There is a phrase I often quote, “Your network is your net-worth.” In the words of motivational speaker Jim Rohn: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” These people shape who you are, so choose them carefully. They will impact your view of yourself. When you’re around negative people— ones who b*tch and complain—you become part of that conversation and energy.
Be kind to yourself
As you learn to love yourself, your community and the people you spend the most time with should be those who will praise you and pour positivity into you. Surround yourself with people who care about you, contribute to you, and want the best for you.
Being kind to yourself may seem easy, yet it can be challenging for you based on years of negative conditioning. We all have an inner voice that may not say the nicest things to us. Your machinery may be telling you things like you’re not good enough, you’re not worthy, you don’t deserve it, or you can’t do something. The truth is that you are good enough, worthy, deserving, and you have a purpose.
Speaking about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith once explained: “Her happiness is not my responsibility. She should be happy, and I should be happy individually. Then we come together and share our happiness. Giving someone the responsibility to make you happy when you can’t do it for yourself is selfish.” Most matchmakers and love coaches will agree that happiness is a choice, and to love another person, you must first learn to love and accept yourself.
Whenever you catch yourself being hard on yourself, ask yourself, ‘Am I kind to myself? Would I be saying those things to someone I love? A child? My parents? My best friend?’ Your opinion of yourself is so essential to your happiness and how you show up anywhere. When your view of self is negative, your environment is hostile.
Challenges and conflicts happen in partnerships when you lack selfworth and self-love. Thankfully, you can practice loving yourself and notice how the quality of your relationships improve. When you don’t love yourself first, you’ll tend to get lost in relationships and define yourself based on someone else’s opinion of you. 107

ENJOY SCOTTSDALE LIKE A LOCAL By Amanda Mactas
L
ocated a mere 45 minutes from the Phoenix airport, Scottsdale, Arizona is a bustling haven for travelers looking for a hot, relaxing locale in an easy-to-get-to location. Desert landscapes filled with saguaro cacti and blue skies, Scottsdale is not only a great place to relax, but it’s also filled with plenty of activities to keep you movin’. From stunning hiking trails to five-star spas, you can spend a lifetime trying to check everything there is to do in this city off your bucket list.
DESERT OASIS Scottsdale is home to an abundance of hotels and resorts to call home for the duration of your vacation. If you’re looking for a cozy spot fit for family travel, Diamond Resorts Rancho Mañana in nearby Cave Creek provides spacious casitas that come complete with a kitchen, fireplace, two king beds, and a balcony or patio. It also sits on a championship golf course, has an outdoor pool, and sits near many family-friendly activities.
Not too far away, you can also choose to stay at the Boulders Resort & Spa, which houses roomy accommodations in the form of casitas, suites, villas, and haciendas. Located in the midst of the infamous and stunning rock formation of the boulders, the highly awarded resort houses a spa and fitness center, pools and tennis courts, a golf course, and plenty of outdoor activities. If you’re on the hunt for a more traditional hotel stay, opt for either The Phoenician Resort or Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa, both settled on either side of Camelback Mountain. Here you’ll find unparalleled views of the desert and mountains. The Phoenician exudes opulence and relaxation, and you will certainly be pampered during your stay. From the on-property restaurants to the immaculate Forbes Five-Star-rated spa, a stay at The Phoenician isn’t one you’ll soon forget. Meanwhile, the Sanctuary boasts panoramic views of the breathtaking Arizona landscape, fine dining, and luxury accommodations that will keep you coming back for more.
FEED MORE THAN YOUR SOUL Arizona is home to some top-notch restaurants, and Scottsdale happens to have some of the best the state has to offer. These are only a small handful of the many amazing culinary delights you’ll find. You can never go wrong with a steak dinner at Mastro’s Steakhouse or Ocean Club, and you can balance out the gluttony you’re sure to encounter at those two venues with a healthy—but no less delicious— meal at The Herb Box. If something sweet is more your style, stop by the Sugar Bowl in Old Town Scottsdale. Decked out in bubble gum pink and dating back to 1958, this 50’s-style ice cream parlor and diner is super fun, and their milkshakes bring more than just the boys to the yard. The Mission, which has two Scottsdale locations, is another trendy locale, boasting modern Latin cuisine and unparalleled vibes. House-made specialty tortillas, salsas, and sauces are prepared fresh every day, while meats are cooked on a plancha or on a mesquite wood or pecan grill to infuse bold flavors. Tonto Bar & Grill, located on the same property as Rancho Mañana Golf Club, fuses Southwestern flavors with Native American ingredients, resulting in a tasty twist on American cuisine.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES Hands down, one of the best things about this bustling city is its proximity to an abundance of hiking trails, state parks, and outdoor adventures. Off-Road Jeep Tours offer a handful of different desert adventures, from sunset jeep tours to astronomy and hiking tours. A plethora of companies also offer rock climbing, including those on-site at the Boulders Resort. Another popular activity in Scottsdale is hot air ballooning. You’ll catch glimpses of them during sunrise and throughout the day gliding through the sky, and for good reason—the views are incredible.
You’ll also want to head to the Arizona Boardwalk, especially if you’re in town with kids. Here you’ll find the awe-inspiring OdySea Aquarium (you can watch sharks swim by in the bathroom), Butterfly Wonderland, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, and many other entertaining attractions and restaurants. There is an abundance of things to do in Scottsdale, Arizona and the surrounding area, and it is a prime destination for any outdoor enthusiast. With dreamy weather almost year-round (we suggest steering clear during the scorching summer months), beautiful desert terrain, friendly locals, and delicious cuisine, a visit to Arizona will put a smile on anyone’s face.
