THE BEAUTY OF
Pride
UP CLOSE + PERSONAL WITH LAURA GELLER
Letter from the EDITOR-IN-CHIEF The strength and beauty of the Pride community lies in its diversity and its unwavering determination to love + accept one another, unapologetically.
It is important to acknowledge and accept individuals for who they are, including those who identify as drag performers, Queer, and non-binary. Acceptance of diversity is crucial for creating a world in which everyone feels safe and accepted for who they are, regardless of their race, gender identity, sexual orientation, or any other aspect that makes them unique. It is essential to respect and support individuals of all backgrounds by embracing their differences and celebrating their uniqueness. Everyone deserves the right to express themselves freely, and it is vital to create a welcoming and inclusive environment that nurtures creativity and self-expression. I am always proud of each of our issues, especially this one, dedicated to celebrating the Beauty of Pride. As editor-in-chief of this publication, it brings me immense joy to showcase + recognize the beauty + resilience of the LGBTQIA+ community. Our team has worked diligently to create a captivating issue that highlights the stories + experiences of Queer individuals, their achievements, and their contributions toward creating a more accepting and inclusive world for all. In this issue, you will find insightful interviews with prominent personalities from the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as coverage on a range of topics like gender identity, bullying, literature, and more. We also have a range of advice columns, fashion features, and beauty secrets to help you explore gender expression and self-care in new, creative ways. And don’t miss our inspiring interviews with LGBTQIA+ beauty entrepreneurs, makeup artists, and activists who are paving the way for a more inclusive industry, along with beauty tips and tricks from LGBTQIA+ influencers. Carson Kressley, fashion guru and one of the original members of the “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” team, is our featured cover story. In BELLA’s exclusive interview, Carson talks about his career, personal style, and latest projects. He candidly shares his experiences in the fashion industry, his thoughts on the
As we continue to push toward a society that is more accepting and inclusive, it is essential to recognize the beauty and power of individuals who have been marginalized and oppressed for simply existing and embracing who they are. We hope this issue will serve as a source of inspiration and empowerment for you all, regardless of your gender identity or sexual orientation. We invite you to join us in this journey of celebrating the Beauty of Pride. Thank you for your continued support. With love + warm wishes (and do we dare say, “Finally, Spring is here?!”),

Meet Renowned Non-Surgical Expert,
Stephen P. Bracci MD, VERVE Medical Cosmetics By Jennifer DeCillis
38
“Quiet luxury” is the new buzzphrase in fashion, and when it comes to beauty, the extraordinary results of aesthetic physician, Stephen P. Bracci, MD, founder of VERVE Medical Cosmetics, epitomize this concept. From the moment you enter one of his five private-practice studios, Dr. Bracci personalizes your treatment with his unsurpassed ability to combine outstanding technique with brilliant artistry. Dr. Bracci’s pioneering, age-reversing, cosmetic injection methods promise results that turn back time. Drawing upon more than 23 years of experience, Dr. Bracci’s treatment of thousands of patients and his unique brand of cosmetic facial rejuvenation help him achieve optimal results for every one of his patients. Verve Medical Cosmetics is one of the only aesthetic medicine practices solely dedicated to advanced and artistically driven cosmetic filler treatments. “My patients don’t want to look over done, they want to look younger, wellrested,” Dr. Bracci says. “Cosmetic injections are a form of artistry, and my practice is dedicated to this art form.” So, call him the “non-surgical alternative to a plastic surgeon,” if you must. His passion is achieving the best results for his patients, using highly targeted sculpting techniques with cannula device injections. Dr. Bracci believes those who are considering plastic surgery should consider his trademark non-surgical injectable BaseLift™ and EyeRise™ treatments instead. The before-and-after results of these treatments are jaw-droppingly amazing, and his patients believe they are life-changing.
Dr. Stephen Bracci founded Verve Medical Cosmetics in 1999 when the use of lasers for anti-aging and hair removal solutions was just emerging. In 2002, Botox Cosmetic, a wrinkle muscle relaxer, was introduced to the market, and his medical artistic palette was complete; he was on his way to creating life-changing results for his patients. Dr. Bracci considered it one of the best beauty discoveries on the planet and saw the possibilities of its use in anti-aging treatments.
Dr. Stephen Bracci received his medical degree from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He trained in anesthesiology at Yale Medical School and physical medicine at NYU. Dr. Bracci is an advocate of staying healthy and living longer. Regular exercise and a largely plant-based diet are a part of Dr. Bracci’s lifestyle, and he encourages others to make them part of theirs. His podcast, “Ageless Rage: Conversations You Wish You Were Having with Your Doctor,” can be heard wherever podcasts are available. His private studios, VERVE Medical Cosmetics, are located in New York City, Bergen County, New Jersey, Irvington, Westchester, Garden City, Long Island and Brickell, Miami.
VERVE is a highly advanced medical aesthetic studio focused on advanced facial rejuvenation with cosmetic injections; it is not a medical spa. Patients receive top-notch results in the hands of an expert artist who is truly focused and talented. This is the unique non-surgical brand of Dr. Stephen Bracci.
For more information, visit VerveCosmetic.com; follow @VerveMedicalCosmetics on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and YouTube; or call 212-888-3003.
“Sagging skin begins with the loss of bone and tissue below the skin,” Dr. Bracci explains. “Why would you want to cut, stretch, or reposition this skin when you can now replace this loss with cosmetic fillers?” There isn’t a laser device or plastic surgery procedure that truly performs with more immediately visible, natural results and minimal downtime than Dr. Bracci’s trademark procedures.
In 2012, Dr. Bracci witnessed the results of his technique for under-eye bag removal—they provided longer-lasting results than most procedures. His understanding of the individual anatomy of the under-eye area, coupled with his understanding of the medical outcomes of different injectables, led to the decision to give his brand of procedures names. The result—EyeRise™ for the removal of under-eye bags and dark circles, and BaseLift™—the non-surgical facelift. The names of these two procedures provide patients a clear understanding of what they will receive and what their results will be.

Laura Geller:
BEAUTY INDUSTRY ICON CELEBRATES WOMEN OF ALL AGES By By Jennifer Jennifer DeCillis DeCillis
Up Close + Personal
A born-and-raised New Yorker, Laura Geller began her iconic career combining her two passions: beauty and Broadway, working backstage as a theatrical makeup artist. Soon after, she took center stage when she opened her namesake makeup studio on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. During the 20+ years her studio was in business, Laura became known for her wearable looks and magnetic personality—two talents that made her a resounding success on air at QVC. In 1997, the first product in the Laura Geller Beauty makeup line—a highlight and contour kit—sold out in minutes. A few years later, the award-winning Spackle Skin Perfecting Primer was born. Two decades later, it remains a cult favorite. After pioneering the world of makeup primer with the game-changing Spackle, the brand soon became famous for its iconic baked makeup. All of Laura Geller Beauty's baked formulas are handcrafted in Italy and designed with mature skin in mind. Each product delivers weightless, silky color that never cakes or creases—even in fine lines. Laura Geller, herself, is an inspiring, powerful cheerleader for uplifting and celebrating women of all ages. Her dedication to recognizing and catering to women of a certain age within the beauty sphere has set her apart, and Laura Geller Beauty’s bold decision to exclusively feature women over 40 in advertising, social media, and on LauraGeller.com, has secured the brand’s place in history. BELLA got Up Close & Personal with Geller to learn more about her inspiration in formulating such a timeless brand and cultural shift in the perception of beauty. It is such an honor getting to know a beauty industry icon! Tell our readers what first drew you to the industry, specifically in makeup and makeup artistry. Right from the start I always had a love for two things: beauty and Broadway. Being born and raised in New York City I felt drawn to the spotlight and making women look and feel their best on the big stage. Combining my two loves, I landed the job that would change everything for me—working backstage as a theatrical makeup artist. Soon after, I started doing celebrity clients for TV and film, and then became the go-to lead makeup artist for celebrity and society weddings. A few years later, I decided to take center stage myself and open my first namesake makeup studio on the Upper East Side, Laura Geller Beauty. Your makeup line has amassed cult favorites. What are some of your most sought-after products? The two products that have been most successful for me have been our Spackle Primer franchise and all my baked makeup (foundations, blushes, bronzers, highlighters, and shadows). Before I brought Spackle to the masses, primer was only being used in professional settings like for Broadway actors and film. But I thought it was important for everyone that their makeup lasted and looked better. Being a pioneer in the world of makeup primer, we have seen over 1,855 five-star ratings for Spackle from shoppers in their 60s and 70s who swear by this product’s lightweight base for longlasting makeup, minimizing the look of pores and fine lines. Following Spackle, we became famous for our baked makeup. All handcrafted in Italy and designed with mature skin in mind, each product delivers weightless, silky color that never cakes or creases. It’s because we take cream pigments and bake them into a powder, so the result is makeup that sits on top of skin, rather than seeping into it. The Baked Balance-n-Brighten Foundation has always been a fan favorite and a hero product for the brand and is now the firstever makeup product to receive the seal of recognition from the National Psoriasis Foundation.

Your baked formulas are designed with mature skin in mind, and you cater to women. Was that your goal from the start or did the consumers inspire you? My goal was to take all the makeup formulas and tip and tricks I learned from the professional world and bring them to women, encouraging them to feel confident from the inside-out. I've applied makeup to everybody from 19 to 90. They're not just mature clients, but the mature clients have spoken loudly, and we hear them. As a result of all the outreach from women 40+, we have dedicated ourselves to being a beauty brand for them. The Laura Geller brand is known for celebrating beauty later in life. Have you faced any challenges with this creative direction, especially in an era saturated with such young influencers? While we haven't faced any huge hurdles in this area, we have noticed a major wave in feedback from customers who love the stance we have taken. Since making the decision to exclusively feature models over 40, we have received a wide variety of praise for our efforts. As a result, we doubled down on the message and created National Mature Women's Day, which occurs annually each April 9th to continue the conversation around ageism. I know I have personally felt the pressure of aging and the stereotypes we put on ourselves surrounding our age, especially working in the beauty industry. Do you think society has made women fear aging by equating youth to beauty? Yes, I do believe that society has made women fear aging by equating youth to beauty. This is the reason I took such a bold stance on the issue by deciding to only feature models over 40 in our advertising and marketing efforts, including our social media channels. With this narrative in mind, I have made it the brand's mission to destigmatize the fear of aging in the beauty industry with the goal to encourage every woman to feel beautiful no matter what stage of life they are in. Regardless of an individual’s age who is using them, your products and brand have become iconic, timeless classics. What can we expect from Laura Geller in the future? When it comes to amplifying mature voices, we are just getting started. With our second annual National Mature Women’s Day, we are excited to have brought back the limited-time age-based discount (Are you 47?. 47% off! 73? 73% off!), along with a special campaign that sheds light on the universal experience of feeling invisible when you reach a certain age. You can also expect more baked makeup and even a new variation of our Spackle primer. There is so much more to come from Laura Geller Beauty in 2023, and we are so excited to share it with you.

Chow BELLA | Soulful Sips
in Every Cup By Amanda Mactas
A simple cup of tea can change the trajectory of your day. Or better yet, your life—at least according to Zhena Muzyka. You could say that tea runs through Zhena’s veins, having inherited her passion from her grandmother. “My Ukrainian grandmother, Maria, raised me to believe that sipping from a cup of hand-blended, intentionally-made tea could help overcome any obstacle, heartache, or fear,” she explains. As the founder of Magic Hour, a tea and transformation company on a mission to connect the world through tea ceremony, Zhena follows her passion, blending teas and creating the most experiential cup of tea. “I believe a cup of tea can save a life, calm a soul, rejuvenate a friendship, and even spice up a marriage! My goal is to share my grandmother’s wisdom and the many benefits of tea with the world through my blends and tea ceremonies.”
Zen Out So, what exactly is a tea ceremony? Zhena explains that it’s a mindfulness practice that, much like meditation, helps to calm your nervous system and focus your mind. Each tea ceremony has a different focus, from finding purpose to creating connection. “In the morning tea ceremony, we can set an intention for the day and share tea with our loved ones before we all rush off to work and school,” explains Zhena. “In the evening, we can create a ritual of easing into night in the same way through tea.”
Fuel Your Body Incorporating tea into your regular ritual isn’t just good for the spirit, it’s also good for your body. Tea is both relaxing and fortifying. Scientific studies have shown that green, black, white, and oolong teas not only help the body find balance and are neuroprotective, but also serve to fight off disease and inflammation.
Magic Hour’s herbal blends are also impactful, helping consumers achieve specific wellness outcomes like better sleep or healthier digestion. Plus, they offer an array of different collections—their Gemstone Wellness, Astrology, Queen’s, and Chakra collection are some of their most popular. In their Astrology collection, for example, teas are designed specifically for the sign’s key attributes and particular health influences. Those who don’t know where to start can take Magic Hour’s online tea quiz to discover which blends might be best for their tastes and wellness journey.
The Process Magic Hour teas aren’t your regular grocery story teas. Their high-quality ingredients are sourced from small, organic, and biodynamic farmers in Sri Lanka, India, Africa, China, and Japan. Zhena’s close relationship with most of the company’s farmers brings great joy to her, and she’s not afraid to get dirty, either. This spring, she’ll be working with growers in the Idulgashinna Bio Tea Garden in Sri Lanka to find new style leaves. Zhena blends her teas with her muses—aka customers— in mind. “I have found the combinations of flower, tea, herb, spice, adaptogen, and essential oil to be endless and thrilling,” she tells us. “I actually dream most of the recipes; I wake up and jot them into my dream journal. I also find something that inspires me like a recipe, cocktail, or healing ingredients and use that to lead the way to the blend. I then infuse the blends with Reiki and a prayer to nourish the soul of our tea drinkers.”
Best Sellers Bohemian Breakfast: Probiotic-rich vanilla Puerh tea for digestion and energy Ruby Moon: Tart and jammy hibiscus elderberry tea high in vitamin C Child’s Pose: Herbal adaptogen tea for sleep and restful calm If you’re looking to amp up your knowledge of tea, Magic Hour has plenty of options in addition to their online shop. Their monthly subscription delivers early access to a themed wellness blend, unique handmade tea ceremony gifts, first dibs on sales and fresh harvest sets, as well as ongoing education in wellness, tea, and mindfulness.

You know the saying, “You are what you eat?” It might be more truthful than you think! Everyone’s goal is to have healthy, glowing, blemish-free, ageless skin. Some foods are great in vitamins and minerals that can promote just that. Read on for a skin-boosting breakfast recipe that contains several skinfueling foods, as well as a list of foods that can help repair your skin.
Quinoa Berrylicious Nutty Breakfast Bowl Add a twist to a typical oatmeal breakfast by using protein-packed quinoa instead. Protein gives volume to your muscles, which in turn helps saggy, wrinkly skin. Quinoa is also rich in selenium, which can help improve skin elasticity. Adding berries will give this dish an antioxidant boost, perfect for helping remove toxins from the body and fight off any damage in our bodies. Add a scoop of Body Construct Protein and shaved almonds for additional benefits (nuts provide vitamin E, which helps protect your skin from sun rays). Prep time: 25 minutes Serves: 2
Ingredients 1 cup cooked quinoa 1 cup mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) 1 tbsp hemp or flaxseeds 1/2 cup sliced, unsalted raw almonds 1 scoop Body Construct protein powder (any flavor) 1/4 cup water
Directions
Cook quinoa and allow it to cool. Prepare mixed berries. Mix quinoa, water, and protein powder into a medium-sized bowl. Stir gently. Top your cereal with mixed berries, almonds, and seeds. Add a small amount of cool whip if desired.

Our mission is to educate and make change through play. In KidZ creates positive change through discovery and play with kid-focused products and content about culture and traditions worldwide. MOST REWARDING: We are raising adults, not children, and empowering their voices is a part of my values and passion. Educating parents on how to properly engage with the next generation is a passion of mine. It is always a treat to watch kids dive into a culture box. They become easily interested in learning something exciting and new! The truth is we are all more similar than we are different, and a lot of those similarities can be found in the games, crafts, toys, and other items we grew up with. For example, who would have thought that the game of Ludo would be popular both in India and Norway? These connections happen when people engage with our kits. SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: Being a child psychiatrist has played a huge role in the effort I have put into In KidZ; being a parent of IndianAmerican children allows me a front-row seat to what kids who are labeled “different” need. 56

LAUGHTER, FASHION, AND LIFE LESSONS:
Carson Kressley ON SUCCESS AND STAYING TRUE TO YOURSELF By Alexandra Anastasio
61
Cover Story
ith his eclectic taste and infectious personality, Carson Kressley rose to fame in the early 2000s with the hit show, “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” Little did he know, this was the start of an incredible journey.
W
Before taking the TV world by storm, Carson was happily ensconced in the world of New York City fashion, working for one of the most iconic brands, Ralph Lauren, a company he says he “always envisioned being a part of.” “I had a job with a non-profit and that was great, but I really wanted to eat and buy a new pair of shoes,” jokes Carson. “I made a list of companies whose products and culture resonated with me, and Ralph Lauren was at the top of that list.” Despite not having much experience in the industry except for a love of clothing and its symbolism, Carson landed a job not long out of college with the renowned fashion company. “I tell people it was like ‘The Devil Wears Prada…’ I was somebody’s assistant, got people’s lunches, picked up samples, and drove around in a black Town Car, but with really nice people who were also very preppy,” says Carson. Since the world first fell in love with Carson, he’s had the opportunity to be a part of many great projects, both on-screen and off. He is a fierce supporter of the younger generation and aligns himself with organizations where he can help make a difference. “I remember my struggle, and anything I can do to make their pathway in the world a little bit easier, I think is valuable,” explains Carson. Fascinated by Carson’s story and his passion for life, we sat down with the star to talk about his road to success and the ways in which he is helping others live a stylish life they love. As a kid, did you ever envision you’d be where you are today? I have always loved design, but it was not so much in the fashion space as the architectural space. I was constantly doodling houses, floor plans, and landscaping designs. I thought for sure I was going to grow up and become an architect like Mike Brady on “The Brady Bunch”! I thought, that's a great job, and then at some point I realized you had to be really good at math, so I was like ‘OK, next!’ I am not a math person! I didn't know what I wanted to do at all, even through college. I had no idea what I was going to do the next Tuesday, so I just followed my heart. I knew I wanted to live in New York City, so the day after graduation I had a job lined up—not a dream job, but a job—and moved to Manhattan immediately. I think the city was a great catalyst in giving me amazing opportunities and opened my eyes to a variety of things I could do and that eventually led me to Ralph Lauren. So, moving to New York City set you on the path you were meant to follow? Absolutely! Moving to New York right away seemed exciting and a little bit scary, but it's the place where possibilities seem unlimited and that's very much my attitude. I know some people have Impostor Syndrome—I have the opposite! I thought, I'm going to go to New York, I can do anything I want, and I can be anyone I want, and that mindset let me become who I was meant to be.

Cover Story
I assembled a great group of friends that I still have today, and they are chosen family. I grew up in New York City in the 90s and while there were some terrible things like the lingering effects of the AIDS epidemic, it was also a very artsy, fun, and interesting time to be there. It molded me and allowed me to explore many different avenues. Can you share the story of how the opportunity with Bravo came to you? By the time 2002 rolled around, I had worked my way up at Ralph Lauren. I had a fantastic job styling all the ad campaigns. One of our producers came into my office one day and said, ‘Hey I was coming to work and on the radio I heard about this show Bravo’s casting.’ They were looking for gay men that were experts in the field of food, fashion, and interiors and I thought, that's me. I was intrigued and I've always been a person who is looking for opportunities. Paired with my thinking that I could do anything—you know, that blissful ignorance—I started to research Bravo. I was called to go and shoot the pilot in the summer of 2002. Like so many things in television, we heard nothing… crickets. I thought, OK, that was fun. In the spring of 2003, they called again and said, ‘Are you ready to quit your job and do this TV show?’ It was daunting because I had a great job with people I loved and a phenomenal boss, Liz Paley. She told me I should try it and if it didn’t work out, they’d figure out a way to hire me back. We started filming the series in March 2003 and it began airing in July. After the first couple of episodes, it was an immediate hit. In what ways did the show impact your life? It was life-changing! I wish we had things like Instagram back then, besides the fact I’d have millions of followers by now, it would have been a great diary of all the amazing things that happened to us as a cast. On a personal level the show was empowering to me because growing up gay, especially in a small town in a conservative area, it is not something that’s talked about, let alone embraced. Then I ran away to NYC to find my tribe and feed myself and live a life I knew I wanted. Now this television show and notoriety was turning the tables on that thing I thought was an Achilles heel, and the thing you are conditioned by society to feel shameful was now being celebrated. You've appeared in several different TV shows since “Queer Eye.” In what ways have those experiences impacted you? Through all of these shows I get to be my authentic self. I did a show called, “How to Look Good Naked,” which I’m really proud of. It dealt with body confidence and embracing every size and shape long before I think that became mainstream. I’m very blessed to have been a part of two important Queer shows, whether it was “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” in the early 2000s or “RuPaul’s Drag Race” right now. Both show young people all over the world that there are many ways to be a human. It’s incredibly powerful to have young people see that they can not only be successful but celebrated for being their authentic selves. While you’re best known for your work in fashion and TV, you’re also an accomplished equestrian. Horses have been my passion consistently throughout my life; it’s the thing that feeds my soul. I always tell people, it’s ironic that you could be on top of a horse, trying not to die, and for me it’s very relaxing. There’s a familiarity there because it’s always been a part of my life.

Cover Story
I grew up on a pony farm outside of Allentown, Pennsylvania, and we literally had 80 to 100 ponies in our backyard. My grandparents bred and sold them, it seemed normal to me, I thought everyone had that. Horses are soulful and when you’re a brooding little gay child out in the middle of nowhere who’s looking for a place of refuge, they were that for me. It sounds like an after school special with Kristy McNichol, but if I had a bad day in school, I’d go to the barn and sit in the hay troughs while all of the ponies were having their dinner. They were my friends; it was just a great escape. As I grew older and started competing, it allowed me to be outgoing and confident. I was competing with people from all over the states and I got to be comfortable with just about every type of person. I think that was a great skill for both my career in New York and also television. Behind the camera you’re an advocate for helping others. What organizations are close to your heart? I’ve always felt incredibly lucky. I think if you’re successful and you’ve had a good experience on the planet, why not pay it forward and share your blessings with others?! There are certain charities that have been near and dear to me. Many years ago, Cyndi Lauper asked if I’d like to join True Colors United, a foundation centered on eliminating youth homelessness. A startling statistic: LGBTQ youth are 40% more likely to experience homelessness than their non-LGBTQ peers. That’s an astounding number and it’s because oftentimes families don’t accept their Queer children and send them off into the world before they’re ready. It’s not like it’s a crazy disease that we don’t have the science yet to conquer, this is something we can absolutely fix. Another one that’s incredible is the Trevor Project, a 24-hour, toll-free suicide prevention hotline. Again, in our political climate and the pressures LGBTQ kids face, its so important to have a resource out there where kids can reach out and we can remind them that they’re not alone, there are people out there that care for them, and there is a place for them in our world. Those two are very close to me and then there’s a lot of equestrian charities and animal rescue groups. But I mostly focus on charities that help LGBTQ youth be comfortable with who they are and thrive. I never knew what I could be or what I wanted to be because I never really saw anyone like me. What projects are you currently working on? We’re fortunate to wrap up season 15 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” this spring and then on to a new season of “BBQ Brawl” on the Food Network. I’m proud of that show. I’m not a food expert, but I try and bring good taste and share that with people. I’m also trying to have as much fun as possible, that was my New Year’s resolution. Life is short—you should start having more fun, so I’m going to do that as well. I have some great trips planned for this summer to Greece and Italy. Sometimes life gets in the way and we’re so busy, but I’ve really tried to carve out time this year and say ‘No, I’m going to go so Sicily!’

Mind + Body | Trans Awareness
TRANS ASYLIAS, a New York City-based non-profit organization founded in 2021 by Iman Le Claire, provides resources for transgender and non-binary asylum seekers to escape their home countries where they face persecution and resettle in trans-friendly countries. Iman herself endured years of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse until she finally sought asylum outside of her native country of Egypt. After arriving in the United States, she quickly realized she still faced the same prejudices simply for being a trans woman of color, which inspired her to create change and form TRANS ASYLIAS. In partnering with businesses like Desert Harvest, TRANS ASYLIAS works to raise awareness of the safety issues for the trans community worldwide and to deliver trans individuals in unsafe parts of the world to safety. Desert Harvest CEO Heather Florio has committed to donate 25% of all proceeds from the sales of their new product, “BumBumz,” a 100% natural-origin anal lubricant, to this amazing organization. BELLA got to know Iman, her mission, and how we can all help her in the bold and selfless work… Tell us about your inspiration for creating the TRANS ASYLIAS organization. It all started with the murder of George Floyd. I found myself on the streets of NYC, alongside thousands, first in the movement for Black Lives Matter and quickly after as one of the faces of the Black Trans Liberation movement, which was holding rallies and marches every Thursday for a year. I constantly reminded the movement that while Trans visibility is encouraged in the United States, many countries—like the one I am from, Egypt —can legally jail and kill LGBTQ+ people. As my voice grew louder both in the streets and online, so did the calling for humanitarian work. Week after week my exposure on social media kept on growing thanks to the extensive coverage of our rallies by numerous photographers. As I was the only Trans activist talking on behalf of the many persecuted in foreign countries, my name started to circulate in the Middle East, Africa, and Jamaica. One day, Retaj, a young Yemeni trans woman, contacted me on Instagram pleading for help. With no experience whatsoever I managed to get Retaj out of Yemen in August 2020 during a global pandemic and a war in Yemen. Nine months later Retaj was in Paris and was granted asylum. Once I successfully relocated three more cases, I knew that I had to commit to this work. TRANS ASYLIAS was registered in the state of New York in December 2021 and received 501(c)(3) status in August 2022. How do you find the cases you take on? Are people seeking you out directly for your help? Like Retaj, most cases find me on social media, mainly Instagram and Twitter, either directly or after reading press articles like the “BBC 100 Women 2021.” Some find out about our website at TransAsylias.org and the options we offer to request help in five different languages. What are some of the biggest challenges your organization faces? First is financial. Each case so far has cost an average $20K. It requires lots of determination and hard work to raise that kind of money each time. Next is personnel. Until we have the financial means to hire staff members, we exclusively rely on volunteers. We are in dire need of Arabic-speaking case managers. Lastly, it’s the lack of respect for asylum by the US government. Asylum is a right and asylum seekers deserve immediate access to temporary housing, health care, and protection, especially when they are the most vulnerable of all—transgender men and women who are exposed to violence and life-threatening situations from nonLGBTQIA+ refugees. Our first 10 cases were safe in France, The Netherlands, and Canada, where they were granted asylum without incarceration and extended protection, housing, and healthcare. Sadly, the USA does not guarantee such a treatment for Trans asylum seekers.
Mind + Body | Trans Awareness
I’m sure this is a massive responsibility. Tell us about your team and the people who help make all this work possible. We are still a grassroots organization. Nobody is getting compensated for their work, not even my husband and I, who are the only two fully on board. We have a small group of trustworthy and smart volunteers who help tremendously. How has your partnership with Heather Florio and Desert Harvest aided in your mission to give back? Heather and I met a year ago at the BELLA Magazine party for your Pride Issue, and we instantly clicked. We have met several times since then. Heather wants to find ways for Desert Harvest to support our work at TRANS ASYLIAS. She came up with the idea to donate 25% of all proceeds from the sale of their new product Bum-Bumz, a 100% natural-origin anal lubricant. Tell our readers how they can get involved, volunteer, and support your efforts. Everybody is born an activist or humanitarian, because as human beings we have to fight or embrace a cause at some point in our existence. No doubt your readers can find a way to help me and TRANS ASYLIAS. Obviously, donations are major. Whatever the amount, donations particularly mean a lot to me when they are recurring, like once a month, since it proves that the donors want to be committed and partners in our long journey to save lives. I like it when donors feel that they are part of the TRANS ASYLIAS family, especially when they want to be kept informed of the progress we are making for a specific case or an individual’s well-being once in a safe country. Volunteers can make a huge difference in how we respond to critical situations. I do not expect all volunteers to be case managers, but they may have skills in listening to, comforting a young transgender, over a virtual call. Or, if they just love spending a lot of time on the Internet and are curious about many subjects, which could be US government issues and regulations; LGBTQIA+ rights in the US or overseas; non-profit organizations and LGBTQ-friendly press like BELLA, they can become a research volunteer for TRANS ASYLIAS.

Finally, spreading our mission and messages on social media, or by reaching out to their friends and contacts, thus being instrumental in raising funds, would also be another way to help.

Everything You Need To Know About Glutathione AKA the “Beauty Shot” By Jennifer DeCillis
“Bea
uty s tarts from a hea the i lthfu nside l life style , and exter l e ads t nal b o e auty. ~Dr. ” Helm andi
Looking to take a dip in the fountain of youth? Dr. Bushra Helmandi, founder of leading Midtown Manhattan wellness center and MedSpa, Beauty and Body Aesthetics, suggests trying glutathione IV therapy or a glutathione injection. It’s no surprise that there has been an increased demand for this powerful antioxidant—it repairs cells, detoxifies the system, and improves the color and brightness of skin. Beauty and Body now offers both options.
With the natural aging process, however, our bodies produce less of this tripeptide, which is why an IV drip or shot of glutathione can help balance the levels in your body. This powerful anti-aging agent does wonders for the skin, keeping it smooth, youthful, and glowing. It also improves metabolism, reduces inflammation, and promotes energy and mental clarity. Overall, glutathione is a powerhouse for internal and external health and beauty enrichments. “Beauty starts from the inside, and a healthful lifestyle leads to external beauty,” says Dr. Helmandi. “At Beauty and Body Aesthetics, we include nutritional counseling with a registered dietitian, who can recommend specific vitamin-infused IV drips to help those on their beauty and wellness journey.” The effects of the glutathione IV therapy or shot will be visible in about three weeks, but the final result is based on the consistency of treatments and overall health.

The liver normally produces glutathione, an antioxidant that helps to collect and eliminate free radicals in the body while restoring the immune system. The removal of free radicals from the body also ensures stronger nails and hair, brighter and tighter skin, and higher energy levels.

On Becoming an Ally By Geraldine “Gerry” Viggiani
In so many ways it is tragic that I need to write about becoming an ally to the LBGTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer/ questioning, asexual+) community. That said, even though there has been more and more acceptance in social media, television, and the movies, and even in everyday life, systemic prejudice still runs rampant. Pride Month came about to bring the plight of these communities into awareness as well as spark solidarity and support, but this is only the tipping point of what is needed to bring about the level of change all throughout the year that is needed. Bullying, heckling, harassment, social isolation, familial rejection, and even violence are just some of the challenges that plague the LGBTQIA+ person. In addition, the current political climate, with its anti-LBGTQIA+ legislation, have proposed to roll back rights that were previously won. A sampling of this includes the “Don’t Say Gay or Trans” bill in Florida, as well as a bill that would limit transgender youth by restricting access to participation in school sports, antisame-sex marriage campaigns, and restricted access to some transition-related care. People who are Black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) face additional discrimination through racism. These scenarios create a chronic form of psychological stress due to constantly facing a lack of acceptance, fear of violence, and discrimination, which can significantly impact one’s long-term physical and mental health. To gain a sense of affirmation and safety, the community needs allies to further acceptance, advocate for civil rights, and provide positive personal connections at home, school, socially, politically, and environmentally. Allies are people both straight, cis gender (a term used to describe a person whose gender identity aligns with those typically associated with the sex assigned to them at birth), or within the community who are supporters and defenders of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, asexual, and intersex+ community. How can you become an ally of the LGBTQIA+ community? Here are just a few ways.
Learn the Language Familiarize yourself with the proper terms when speaking with someone from the community. It not only shows respect, but the effort you are making at educating yourself feels affirming. There are many online glossaries that include appropriate terminology. SAIGE - Society for Sexual, Affectional, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities has a terrific one. Remember that these lists are fluid and can change, so check back often.
Educate Yourself on the History of Activism in the LGBTQIA+ Community Getting to know the history of LGBTQIA+ activism is an empowering act in becoming an ally, as well as honoring the effort and sacrifices of those who have come before. It’s important to appreciate how far we have come in the struggle for equality to fully understand how far we have left to go. A great place to start is Stonewall.org. Take this even further by researching what the issues are that are affecting the community, find ones that resonate with you, and take action.
Get Involved and Show Your Support Participate in a Pride rally or parade; write letters to legislators; listen, affirm, and support; and volunteer your time to a LGBTQIA+ cause nationally. For example, look into opportunities with the Human Rights Campaign or The Trevor Project, or locally at an AIDS/HIV clinic or organization near you that supports local LGBTQIA youth with social events, education, and access to other resources.
Stand Up for What You Believe In One voice can cause many ripples in the wave of discrimination. It might feel uncomfortable and maybe scary each time we stand up for a cause, but it is an integral part of being an ally. Share your feelings, educate others, don’t invalidate them but still use change language. Make sure you feel comfortable with the issues you are an ally for, but don’t be afraid to ask questions. Let those with bigoted ideas know that you do not condone or tolerate such beliefs. Take to social media and make what you believe in known. 76

For Better Health, Rise with the By Jennifer Walsh
SUN
It’s spring and we couldn’t be more excited for the longer and warmer days ahead. Many people begin to shift their workouts to time outside vs. indoors at the gym. Even more are willing to get up earlier to catch the first rays of sunlight to kick off their days. Did you know that rising with the sun and choosing to get your body moving outdoors at that time boasts a multitude of health benefits? Let’s break down some of the most impactful wellness perks of rising and working out at dawn. It Impacts Your Circadian Rhythm That’s your body’s internal biological clock that regulates your sleep-wake cycle, hormone production, and other bodily functions. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that exposure to bright light in the morning significantly improved sleep quality and mood in individuals with insomnia. The study also found that participants who were exposed to bright light in the morning had a better circadian rhythm than those who were not exposed to light in the morning. Crystal-Clear Eye Health A study published in the Journal of Biological Rhythms found that exposure to blue light in the morning improved circadian rhythm and alertness in healthy individuals. The study also found that blue light exposure reduced the production of melatonin, which is known to help protect our eyes from conditions like macular degeneration and cataracts. It Kicks Up Your Cardio Health A study published in the American Journal of Hypertension found that working out in the morning can help significantly reduce blood pressure in individuals with hypertension. The study also concluded that morning exercise may be an effective nonpharmacological intervention for reducing blood pressure.

5 Steps to Fabulous
Your Guide to Living Beautifully — Inside & Out By Vanessa Coppes There are many things that make life easier. Technology has greatly advanced and can aid us in many areas of life, such as with communication and task management. Having supportive friends and family can help us navigate life's challenges. And of course, maintaining a positive mindset and appreciation for the small things in life can improve our overall well-being. Not many make it—well, more fabulous—which is why I am always eager to share things that can help you upgrade. Whether it’s your next self-care adventure in the city, or a desire to elevate your style, give it a try with these essentials…
1. These Boots Are Meant for Style Several months ago, I headed to Austin for the first time, and was invited to a "Boot Party." I'm an adventurer, but more importantly, a connector. I had the pleasure of meeting Alvie Franklin Faulkenbery IV, a fifth generation Texan and the founder of Alvies. He considers himself a practical man, one who learned that feet are the heat regulation center of the body, which is why he grew up as a flip-flop guy—he even wore them to his college graduation! His love of boots, however, developed when he inherited 13 pairs from his grandfather, a WWII veteran and boot guy. Alvie’s grandfather built up a serious collection of beautiful, high-quality cowboy boots, and from that day forward he was both a flip-flop and boot guy. Alvie believes that everybody belongs in his boots. The brand is focused on top-quality leather, handmade with 100% genuine leather produced by one of the oldest and most respected bootmakers in León, Mexico. The brand puts a fresh, modern spin on the time-honored craftsmanship and traditional styling of cowboy boots, and I left in awe of the Alvies story. Alvies are built to last, and are made for cowboys, city girls, accountants, surfers, Texans, techies, brewmasters, pitmasters, mosh-pitters, sports-quitters, athletes, mathletes, bachelorettes, best men, ballerinas, people with two left feet, drummers, DJs, barkeeps, campers, ranchers, outlaws, in-laws, dog people, cat people, weirdos, and dreamers. You won't regret getting your feet into a pair of these fabulous boots. Alvies.com, @Alvies on Instagram 80

The Beauty of Giving Back
By Yolanda F. Johnson
Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The arrival of the troops arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday. Essentially speaking, the slaves were free, but didn’t know it yet. What jubilation must have burst forth; what joy they must have had to know that they finally had their freedom. So, for this Juneteenth, only two years into the official Federal holiday, let’s look at a few different ways we can embrace such an important celebration. #1: SAVOR YOUR FREEDOM What is it that you are grateful you can do because you are free? In today’s climate, freedom is not something to take lightly. I am grateful for freedom of speech, religion, and that even though some might want to take steps backwards, as Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends justice bends toward justice.” #2: GIVE BACK Is there a Juneteenth celebration near you? Check your local calendars and there are often national guides in outlets such as U.S. News & World Report. Is there a local shelter or food bank you can support? An organization that champions racial justice? Go outside of your comfort zone and remember that you can give many different “T’s” – time, talent, treasure, testimony, and more. #3: TAKE THE HOLIDAY SERIOUSLY I’ve noticed that in the past few years, holidays for which many people fought long and hard to have recognized are still ignored by many. We have to be the change we want to see in this regard by taking the day off and actually doing at least one thing to celebrate. Turn on your out-of-office message to let others know not to expect a response from you. If you are a manager or business owner, encourage your team members to actually take the day off instead of plowing through as though it does not matter. #4: TAKE A CULINARY JOURNEY Try some new soul food delicacies. From hushpuppies to red beans and rice, collard greens to red velvet cake, there are so many things to try. And now, there are many vegetarian options as well. Red velvet cake, in particular, has a very close association with Juneteenth celebrations and is a truly delicious treat to enjoy on a hot summer day with ice cream. As we celebrate the season, let’s remember the beauty of liberty and all the ways we can give back and recognize our country’s history. As we think of Juneteenth, raise a glass (or a piece of that cake) and proclaim, “Here’s to freedom!”

THE IMPORTANCE OF LOVING YOURSELF
By Jarrod Thalheimer
We humans always seem to focus on the extremes, especially when it comes to how we feel about ourselves. Instead of seeking (and maintaining) a healthy balance, we seem to end up either gorging our egos on shallow adulation and unearned praise or poisoning them with constant self-loathing and relentless abuse. Then we let social media do its part by amplifying whatever pendulum-swing of mania we happen to be suffering and make things even worse. The result? A confused mess of egoistic attention-seeking, fronting a deep-seated conviction of personal worthlessness pinballing its way through life in evermore reckless and destructive ways. Can you say, “unhealthy relationships” for $200, Alex? (or Ken, or Mayim)?” But it doesn’t have to be this way. Genuine, sincere self-love is available to all, but only with an understanding of some basic truths that lie deep at the center of every person. Thankfully, BELLA exists to track down and share such pearls, seeking only to help steer you down the path of a balanced, holistic love for the singularly unique and incredible person that is you. Let’s get loving!
Truth #1: Your Existence Matters
First and foremost, you exist, and whatever the specific circumstances of creation that led to that reality, it means some entity somewhere decided you mattered enough to be here right now. And whether you believe in a higher power or merely hold trust in cosmic accident, the “miracle” that led to you being is ipso facto proof that you matter (trust me, it’s a logic thing). Embracing that truth is a critical first step toward fully loving yourself. Logic asserts that you become free to love yourself because you were “loved” enough to be given existence. So, whether you see your presence on earth as a function of God, nature, or merely the kismet of happenstance doesn’t matter. The universe wanted you here, and here you are in all your beautifully perfect imperfection. Embrace it. Accept it. Love it.
Truth #2: Your Gratitude Matters
It’s impossible to hate something you’re grateful for. Being grateful for the life you have received, no matter how difficult it may sometimes be, is the next crucial step in building real love for yourself. Gratitude is appreciation, and appreciation is an understanding and acceptance of value—the value of you! Just try disliking something that you’re genuinely grateful for… you can’t! This is why daily gratitude, even for the struggles that invade each of our lives, matters so much. Only gratitude can overwhelm negativity, and practiced repeatedly, it leads to a confidence that not only strengthens your own love for yourself but can inspire others as well.
Truth #3: Your Forgiveness Matters
Practicing forgiveness for others is a given. Everyone knows how damaging the holding of slights and grudges can be. Living in anger requires a constant boil of simmering, negative energy. Inevitably, it weighs us down and tires us out, physically and mentally. But the same goes for personal forgiveness as well. Being able to forgive our own mistakes, weaknesses, and imperfections allows the warmth of real love to return to our hearts, growing them in ways that are transformative. Rehashing and reliving the errors of existence over and over does little more than depress and darken whatever love we have for ourselves. Acknowledge mistakes, work to correct them, but be willing to forgive yourself for committing them. Forgiveness matters just as much for yourself as for others…. maybe more!
Truth #4: Your Attitude Matters
Nothing ever gets them down. Their chirpy, always-up attitude can seem grating and annoying, especially to those already grumpy or angry. And yet, it’s exactly this kind of approach to the challenges of life that can make all the difference. The ability to reframe troubles, to shift your point of view of an event from the most negative outlook available to the most positive possible will go untold miles in structuring the kind of psyche that can not only support personal love, but that exudes it for everyone else too. Every morning, we have a choice in how we face the day. A positive attitude is everything. Make the right choice and reap the rewards.
Truth #5: Your Love Matters
By establishing that you as an individual matters, we also establish that your love matters too. Everyone has had times in their life when the love they’ve offered to others was either unrequited or even outright abused. It hurt every single time. But the fact that it hurt only confirms the sincerity of the gift that was given. Just as you can love because you are loved, the love that you offer to others confirms the importance of it as a gift of real significance and its value. For your love to have value, you must have value—which is why the circle that is created begins and ends with the love you have for yourself. Incredibly, the more you offer, the more that returns to you and the more valuable it continually becomes, creating the most perfect expression of harmonious symmetry we will ever know. And this amazing gift is instantly available to every one of us, but only when we consent to loving ourselves first. 87
Leading with Empathy: Kylie Bullo and the Women-Powered Future of Conservation By Jenna Taskin
Get ready to meet a conservation crusader whose dedication to protecting endangered species is truly awe-inspiring. Kylie Bullo, conservation project manager of The Orangutan Project, has spent more than two decades enhancing forest conservation and safeguarding the survival of the critically endangered orangutan population in Borneo and Sumatra. She has been the driving force behind ensuring their survival by facilitating their reintroduction into the wild and promoting better welfare for these majestic creatures. But Kylie's work doesn't stop there—she's also a staunch advocate for promoting gender equity and empowering women in conservation. Her work with the first-ever women-led ranger team, known as “The Power of Mama,” underscores her unwavering commitment to promoting gender equity and protecting the planet. In this exclusive interview, we chat with Kylie about her work with The Orangutan Project, her passion for the Power of Mama project, and why she believes empowering women are key to conservation efforts. In your book, “Reaching for the Canopy,” you described the experience of releasing Temara, the first ever zoo-born orangutan, into the wild. How did this experience impact you personally, and what lessons did you learn from it that have influenced your conservation work since then? Preparing and releasing Temara into the wild will always be one of the most special moments of my life. As much as I loved working with the orangutans at the zoo, I knew in my heart that they didn’t belong in captivity. In 2005 I used all my annual leave to spend six weeks at a release site in Sumatra to assist a young, traumatized male orangutan named Tatok with his rehabilitation. Tatok was a very traumatized orangutan and had many negative stereotypic behaviors including hugging himself and rocking back and forth. He was a lost soul. Under my guidance and care, Tatok’s confidence and forest skills improved dramatically, and because of this, Leif Cocks, founder of The Orangutan Project, and I began to discuss the possibility of releasing one of the Perth Zoo orangutans. We decided on Temara based on her age and the fact she would have been leaving her mum in the wild, her intelligence, and her independence. It was a huge undertaking, and we started preparing Temara about a year before her release. This included adjusting her zoo diet to include more natural foods. We also adjusted her nesting material, so she only had leaves and branches to make nests from rather than hessian sacks and shredded paper. She was given access to an exhibit with a large ficus [fig] tree in it so she could practice her climbing and nest building skills. We also started saying some key Indonesian phrases to her since her long-term trackers would be Indonesian. 88

Getting to Know
Temara’s training and release reinforced that orangutans could learn and adapt to live in the forest, even if they have been in captivity for years and they should be given that chance. That is why The Orangutan Project supports numerous orangutan rehabilitation centers and now also runs two of our own with our alliances, The Sumatran Rescue Alliance and the Borneo Rescue Alliance. Every orangutan life matters, and we want to ensure that as many as possible get the chance to return to the jungle they were taken from. Can you tell us more about the Power of Mama ranger teams and how they are benefiting both the environment and local communities? The inspiring Power of Mama project is spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of The Republic of Indonesia and is supported by Yayasan International Animal Rescue Indonesia (YIARI). The Orangutan Project is also proud to provide vital funding to this program. The expected outcomes and benefits of this project are to protect wildlife, empower women, and uplift forest-edge communities; restore peatlands to their natural waterlogged condition, reducing Karhutla (forest fire) events; and safeguard orangutans by eliminating fire risks in vulnerable forests [among a number of other initiatives]. What are some of the challenges the Power of Mama (PoM) ranger teams face in their work, and how do they overcome these challenges? The work undertaken by the PoM ranger teams can be very physically demanding. They work in all conditions, from heavy rain to very hot weather. Undertaking patrols both by foot and motorbike can be challenging, especially when it has been raining and the tracks are muddy. Fighting fires can, of course, be scary and physical work. These [women] overcome these challenges by supporting and encouraging each other. They have also received training and are proud to take on these new tasks and learn new things. Do you believe women bring unique perspectives or approaches to conservation work that differ from men? If so, how do these perspectives or approaches benefit conservation efforts? Yes! I feel that women often have more empathy and can be better communicators. Many of the women in the PoM teams have expressed that they want the orangutans to be safe and be able to raise their babies safely in the forest. I think this highlights our maternal and protective instinct toward other mums and babies and is showcased by the name ‘Power of Mama.’ They have also said that they want their grandchildren to be able to see these amazing forests and the animals in them. There is real heart and caring there and I think this leads to long lasting effort and commitment to the conservation cause. The Power of Mama rangers bring families together and teach children from a young age about protecting the environment. In many countries, including Indonesia, it is relatively new for women to work in conservation. These women have so much to offer and are passionate and enthusiastic about helping to protect their environment and local villages.
Kylie is optimistic about the future of women in conservation as more girls enroll in science courses in countries like Indonesia, supported by initiatives such as The Orangutan Project's Orangutan Caring Scholarship program. The program aims to enhance the long-term survival of the Sumatran orangutan while increasing the number of female staff employed in the field and encouraging them to take on leadership positions, inspiring other women and their daughters.

Open a Book & Open Your Mind By Barbara Bellesi Zito
Whether you squeeze in an audiobook during your workout or commute, or you stay up reading well into the night, there’s no wrong way to enjoy books. As always, we’ve got some great recommendations for you, whether you like relatable stories or you prefer to be transported to another time and place. “Uncle of the Year & Other Debatable Triumphs” by Andrew Rannells | Crown
“Pageboy” by Elliot Page | Flatiron Books
Broadway and Hollywood star Andrew Rannells might be 40-something and have all the trappings of success—a great career, his own home, a nice suit that fits—but he still feels very much like a 20-something finding his way in the world. In this book of personal essays, he dives into the idea of “adulting” and whether it’s actually fulfilling or we’re just pretending it is for the sake of our family and friends. From love and romance to career and family— with a special focus on children in the titular essay— this book runs the witty gamut of insight into how we truly want our adult lives to play out.
You might remember this talented actor’s breakout performance in “Juno,” but things have certainly changed for Elliot Page since then. Compelled by Hollywood to play the starlet and forced by society to remain binary, the transgender actor—who uses the pronouns he/they— has now reclaimed his voice and is sharing their story. Whether you’re a fan of “The Umbrella Academy” or simply root for those who have broken the mold of others’ expectations to embrace their true selves, you’ll enjoy this memoir.
>> Rannells is loved by audiences for his Tonynominated performance in “The Book of Mormon,” among many other roles on stage and screen.
>> Page is a vocal advocate for transgender and non-binary individuals. “Lady Tan’s Circle of Women” by Lisa See | Scribner
“Quietly Hostile” by Samantha Irby | Vintage Samantha Irby is back with a new installment of essays that offer LOL glimpses of her life. Granted, her life has gotten a bit snazzier these days—she is a writer for “And Just Like That,” after all. But despite Hollywood’s recognition, she still gets the flop sweats and gastrointestinal issues and has been known to overindulge in retail therapy à la QVC. But unlike how some (or most) people portray their lives on social media, Irby gives us an all-access, unfiltered view of her real reality, and we’re here for it.

>> GO Magazine calls Irby, “Quite possibly the funniest person alive.”
In 15th century China, women’s education is far from a priority. But that hasn’t stopped Tan Yunxian’s grandmother, one of very few female doctors, from teaching her the foundations of Chinese medicine. From a young age, Yunxian learns about women’s health, particularly childbearing, and befriends Meiling, who is training to be a midwife. When Yunxian’s family sends her off to an arranged marriage, she is forced into the traditional role of wife and mother, and she is forbidden to see Meiling or treat women who need her medical knowledge. Based on the true story of a female physician who lived during the Ming Dynasty, this novel tells the story of how this exceptional woman broke free of the bonds of tradition to help other women. >> See is the New York Times bestselling author of “Shanghai Girls” and “Island of Sea Women.”

What she doesn’t know is that Wyatt, Luke’s slacker best friend, was also included in the inheritance. Aly wants to sell, but Wyatt, true to form, isn’t all that interested. The stage seems set for conflict—or could it be that she has more of a connection with Wyatt than meets the eye? >> Pagán is the #1 Amazon Charts and Washington Post bestselling author of “Everything Must Go” and “I’m Fine and Neither Are You.”

“The Unexpected Benefits of Being Run Over” by Naseem Rochette | Misfit Blue
Broken, But Whole Again “The Unexpected Benefits of Being Run Over” by Naseem Rochette | Misfit Blue Naseem Rochette thought her life was over when she was run over not once, but three times when crossing a quiet street in her neighborhood. Though she miraculously suffered no internal injuries or even a single broken bone, Rochette was unrecognizable even to herself. It would be a long road to recovery, both with physical therapy and mental health counseling for her PTSD. But Rochette is a survivor and now applauds what she calls her “cracks.” Each year, on the anniversary of her near-death experience, she celebrates “Unbreakable Day.” In her memoir, she shares with others how they, too, can be resilient in the aftermath of trauma. Rochette believes in the Japanese philosophy of kintsugi, the idea that we recognize our imperfections rather than try to hide them. The word is translated as “golden joinery,” and it’s based on the Japanese art of pottery repair that reconnects broken pieces with gold dust. The pottery is made whole again, but the breakage points are still visible. “We all have cracks of some sort,” Rochette told BELLA, referring to the challenges and traumas we face on life’s journey. “Once we can accept our cracks, hopefully we look at our experiences and appreciate the resilience it took to make it through those tough moments to put the pieces back together. Hopefully, we can appreciate the insights that challenges offer us and the wonderful people and communities that help us move forward. That is what ‘Unbreakable Day’ is about—the holiday my family and I created to celebrate the anniversary of the accident.”

Let’s Talk About It By Jonathan Calixto
With the popularity of podcasts on an upward trend, representation of different communities within the platform has also increased over the years. In 2019, BYLATINMEN, a Queer-Latino entertainment podcast, debuted at #35 on Apple Podcast charts, marking the start of a long journey for creators and friends Kevin Ortega-Rojas and Anthony Polanco. Over the last four years, the duo has talked with community icons like “RuPaul’s Drag Race” legends Alaska, Trinity The Tuck, and Queer-Latino actors such as Harvey Guillén, Juani Feliz, Johnny Sibilly, and Jai Rodriguez. “We’re really glad our show has been able to bring in Queer people of color to remind our audience that there is room for us anywhere,” Kevin and Anthony share about the opportunity to talk with individuals from all aspects of the LGBTQ+ community. While they have felt welcomed by the Queer community, they also understand that having real conversations can be difficult. That’s why their topics range from the ongoing violence toward trans-women, the racism Black and AfroLatinos face in the community, and HIV/AIDS awareness, to more lighthearted topics like sex, dating, and pop culture. The hosts do their best to have authentic conversations about issues they care about and that also directly affects the communities they represent. “We have so much more to do and so much further to go,” share the duo, but they have already begun to be recognized for their work. They were most recently awarded “Best Podcast” at the NYC Glam Awards, one based solely on the people’s choice. “To receive that recognition was an honor, and we felt really embraced by our community,” they share. Now in its fourth season, Kevin and Anthony feel their BYLATINMEN podcast is giving silenced voices a spotlight “in a time when Black and Brown bodies are constantly being harmed and LGBTQ+ people are being silenced.” Their main focus is finding new ways to share stories and build community. The evolution of the podcast has also happened internally, transitioning from three hosts down to two. As for the change, Kevin and Anthony believe the BYLATINMEN brand has grown into its own identity, and in that journey, “we’ve truly learned who we are as a show.” As a venture that started from a group chat having funny and sometimes heated debates, to a podcast with over 100 episodes featuring notable guests and meaningful conversations, BYLATINMEN is an example of authentic Queer representation that is helping fight stigmas. BYLATINMEN is available on all podcast platforms. Episodes can also be streamed directly from ByLatinMenPod.com ByLatinMenPod.com..

(LANCE BASS, SAM SMITH) Advice: Take a lesson from nature. Nature has provided man with the inspiration for many creative solutions throughout history. Nature is often able to deal with whatever is thrown at it, both natural and or man-made, so it provides an excellent template for solutions that werk!
Gemini
(LAVERN COX, NEIL PATRICK HARRIS) Advice: Find a role model. Imagine you could recruit anyone you like to tackle your problems or creative tasks? Who would that person be? Think of the perfect person for the job. And if you can’t find a role model, be a role model— and a super one at that!
Cancer
(COLTON HAYNES, JANE LYNCH) Advice: Think like a child. Children maintain a sense of fun and creativity every single day. Don’t forget to have a little fun throughout the day. Believe in anything and assume it will happen. Maybe jump on your bed or take out that coloring book and give your adult self a break. You can return to being fierce on Friday!
Leo
(DAN LEVY, CARA DELEVINGNE) Advice: Make the impossible possible. Tackle the idea first by questioning it. What makes this idea impossible? Try to identify the obstacle— who said this can’t be done? Why? After you’ve come to the conclusion, prove them wrong by showing them it is possible. And let’s be honest, Leo—you love to be seen!
Virgo
(TOM FORD, ANDREW RANNELLS) Advice: Visualize the problem. Virgo, we all know you love to fix things and make them better. Try drawing your problem on a piece of paper. You don’t have to be a talented artist to do this. Your sketch can be either a realistic or abstract representation of how you see the challenge before you. Virgos are the best for visions. I have one thing to say: You better work!
Libra
(MATT BOMER, GUS KENWORTHY) Advice: Follow your instincts. When tackling any creative problem, the tendency is to follow the tried and tested methods you’ve used in the past. You know that they work, so you can easily justify using them again. You live for a balanced life, Libras, so go balance the house down!
Scorpio
(RUPAUL, JODIE FOSTER) Advice: Take a risk. Creative inevitably requires the courage to take a risk. This is because a creative idea will automatically have an element of novelty about it. It will break with convention or challenge current thinking or paradigms. Scorpio, you are not afraid of the dark side and may even be a little dark yourself. (Can I get an “amen”?!)
Sagittarius

(RAVEN SYMONE, SARAH PAULSON) Advice: Take a break. Have you ever found yourself working hard to solve a crossword or some other kind of puzzle or problem, where no matter how hard you try to complete it, the last few solutions evade you? Then… having put that aside and coming back to it an hour or so later the answers leap out to you? You function on “go, go, go,” or being chill, there’s no in between for you, Sagittarius. Take the chill mode this time and go, go, go back to it after that cute little break you deserve.
Capricorn
(RICKY MARTIN, LEE DANIELS) Advice: Adapt or combine. Creative ideas don’t always have to involve cosmic leaps of innovation. Sometimes a new idea can emerge by adapting an old one. It’s always good to be flexible with ideas. Take what works from something else and combine it with your solution or idea and watch the magic unfold. You Capricorn cuties love to make it to the mountaintop just to shout, “I did it!” We hear you, gurl!
Aquarius
(ADAM LAMBERT, SARA GILBERT) Advice: Start at the end. Begin by writing your goals on a sticky note. Now break them down into smaller goals by working backwards and asking yourself, “What do I need to do to achieve this?” Write each of those answers on a sticky note as well. By the end you’ll feel like you’ve invented Post-it Notes like Romy and Michelle! And because you Aquarius people love to not be told what to do and go against the norm, starting at the end works best for you. Slay!
Pisces
(RUBY ROSE, ELLIOT PAGE) Advice: Expand the problem—or shrink it. Imagine that the challenge you face is 100 times bigger or smaller? How would you deal with it if this was the case? Do you need to be more forceful, or do you not need to worry about it as much? Pretty Pisces people, you love to be in the clouds a lot, so why not go to the iCloud and figure out which one is best? What’s Your Favorite Beauty Product or Ritual?
Taylor Feniello, Digital Marketing Assistant Once I do my morning skincare routine, my day can officially start! Some of the products I have been obsessed with lately are CeraVe Renewing SA Cleanser, The Ordinary Caffeine Solution, and Malkah Areli Queen Einayim Eye Cream. As an adult who suffers from acne breakouts, it is very important that I watch which products I use on my face. These have helped me feel refreshed and ready to take on the day in the morning without the stressful breakouts!
M. Roman, Beauty Correspondent After a long day of running around, shooting content, or just simply living my best life, the beauty ritual I look forward to is washing it all off and slipping on my Drowsy Sleep Mask. After some major moisturizing, the best thing is to block out the light with this comfortable eye mask that helps my skin retain my serums and keep me comfortable throughout the night. After a healthy, deep sleep, I feel rejuvenated and ready to take on the day.
Amanda Mactas, Food & Travel Editor It takes a village to complete my beauty routine, and there are a few stars of the show that I’ve really been loving lately. I’m a sucker for a great serum and Neostrata’s Tri-Therapy Lifting Serum is worth every penny. I usually top that with Stratia’s Liquid Gold moisturizer, which is a godsend because it’s effective but doesn’t make my sensitive skin breakout. Then I use Osmosis Beauty’s Epic Skin Tool to help my skincare products penetrate deeper into my skin, while helping to firm up and contour my face. Plus, it feels really great!
Chris Lanston, Beauty Correspondent Believe it or not , my ritual is old school! I like to use Vaseline on my cheekbones for a nice dewy glow and youthful appearance. It works every time and is a great natural highlighter.
Jonathan Calixto, Fashion and Lifestyle Editor There’s one routine that always gives me a boost right before I step out the door, and that is my hair routine! I use a range of serums and conditioners to keep it healthy on its off days, but with most of my job on-camera, I have two go-to products for styling. Every Man Jack Hair Styling Clay, and Every Man Jack Grooming Cream are essential in my routine because they mix well with other products like hair primers or sprays and include clean ingredients like hydrolyzed soy protein and oat kernel extract.
Vanessa Coppes, Editor-in-Chief I am an eye-cream snob and I have to say that the results from this magic wand are simply fabulous! This innovative solution from SBLA Beauty, the Eye Lift Wand, works wonders on the eyes and to boot, it's a 2023 BELLA Beauty Awards winner!
Lynette Barbieri, Business Development Director I can’t live without my Aloisia Beauty Restore Propolis Collagen Gel. Right after I wash my face every morning, I put this all over my face. A little goes a long way! I love the way it feels—it’s cool, light, and dries right away. I have very dry skin, especially in the winter, but I haven't been dry since I started using it. It helps with tired, puffy eyes in the morning too. I also rub it on my neck. My skin glows and it definitely helps plump up those fine lines around my eyes and mouth. I take my travel size everywhere.
Jennifer DeCillis, Publisher Sometimes we prioritize skin and body care so much in our beauty routine that we forget hair care is just as important. After recently being diagnosed with scalp psoriasis, I am putting my hair care routine at the forefront of my beauty routine. In addition to therapeutic scalp medication, less heat styling, and decreasing product use, I have also discovered the amazing Vitabrid C12 Scalp+ Shampoo. This gentle, yet effective shampoo cleanses your scalp with revitalizing peptides and antioxidants, while leaving your roots stronger and hair healthier. It’s paraben-, sulfate-, and silicone-free, plus is packed with amino acids, DHT blockers, and vitamin B. Most importantly, it’s a true scalp savior!
