INFLUENCER ISSUE
LETTER from the EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
THE INFLUENCER ISSUE People listen to other people first. They will always trust them more. Think back to a purchasing decision you made. Maybe you were looking for a new pair of shoes or a new eye doctor. Where did you find the information? Who did you ask? I can bet that you reached out to people you know to find out their recommendations. People consume branded content, but they first rely on friends, neighbors, and online personalities they know, like, and trust before making a purchasing decision. The same thing happens with our intellectual development. Mental perceptions become a part of who we are regardless of if we are aware of them or not. They influence how we think, how we respond, and how we act. They create our belief systems, our cultural mores, our philosophies, even our habits. And we are also influenced by our genetic heritage, our culture, by our parents and other family members, by friends and enemies, and by what we have read, seen, and experienced.
Photography by Gilles Toucas
Influence is the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something, or the effect itself. It’s literally why the influencer status is such a coveted one.
There’s no denying that influencers are impactful. They help grow brand awareness and reach. They can even help boost a company’s bottom line. But most importantly, influencers make brands and storytelling a little more “human.” Coming off the thrill of BELLA’s sold-out Reinvention Issue, this issue focuses on influencers from all walks of life. Marisol Nichols, our cover star, is front and center in the fight against human trafficking. Shooting her for our cover was my first time visiting LA, and the sense of urgency with this issue is pressing. The advocacy efforts could be seen and felt everywhere we went. Read her interview starting on page 68. The LA trip was certainly full of surprises. It allowed me to finally birth BellaLatinaMag.co. It had been on my heart for years, and now with the support of its Editor-At-Large Candy Calderón, it’s coming to life in June 2020. You can read more about my journey on pages 112-115. And don’t miss our fashion spread—also quite fabulous! You’ll enjoy flipping through pages 22-31, learning more about the movers and shakers that helped make this past season’s New York Fashion Week so memorable. To boot, we also worked with fashion influencer Lilliana Vazquez. You can read about what’s new for her this year beginning on page 64. As we know, influence can take many forms and can be seen in conformity, socialization, peer pressure, obedience, leadership, persuasion, sales, and marketing. In these pages, we’ve delivered some of the best people + resources available to inspire you to live your most BELLA life. The bonus: Most of them are women, of course, in honor of International Women’s Day! With love + warm wishes (and do we dare say, “Finally, Spring is here?!”) ,

I was invited to a press trip hosted by Audi, completely unrelated to our cover shoot. The fact that our style team + my first trip to LA with my son happened simultaneously was nothing short of a God-incidence. Marisol Nichols was an absolute joy to work with for this issue. And our LA cover photographer Gilles Toucas was a dream. I went in with one vision, but after seeing the beautiful art that covered the Sofitel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills property, we decided we had to incorporate it into our feature. Music always plays in the background at our shoots and in between shots, Marisol danced. It was nothing short of brilliant when Gilles thought of grabbing my son’s red headphones for the ultimate pop of color we needed for one of our shots. That’s the influence art can have on us. JOSEPH & STACEY
Luxury Seoul-based Korean leather handbag company Joseph & Stacey recently launched three new collections—Power Up, Hug You, and Fresh Glow—as part of its Lucky Pleat Knit collection. The line proves that Issey Miyake doesn’t have the monopoly on pleats in Asia. In fact, the design is meant to be a symbol of luck in Korean culture, and the idea behind the compactable bags is that anyone who wears it will receive blessings. The new spring colors are inspired by bold and beautiful hues, encouraging youth and vivaciousness. The convenience of the bags makes them a necessity—you can fold them up to travel with ease. Inspired by the ‘70s graphics of the Hamptons and the pastel tones of the Bahamas, the new seashell print is featured in multiple colors on Sea Star Beachwear’s shoes and bags. Affordable pricing from $36$96 makes it a no-brainer this spring. SeaStarBeachwear.com

Meet Style Finder
Caroline Vazzana By Anna Hutchinson
B
ELLA is introducing a new take on your typical fashion feature by showcasing up-and-coming designers and emerging brands. Kicking off this feature, our first designer is…me! My name is Anna Hutchinson and I am student at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. I am working on my final semester at Jefferson, and am so very excited to dive right into this amazing industry postgraduation!
Can you tell us about yourself and give some background on how you got started?
I am a fashion and beauty influencer, stylist, fashion editor, author, and founder of Making It in Manhattan. I started my career by working in editorial—I worked at Teen Vogue and also InStyle. A little over three years ago, I went out on my own to become my own boss. I started writing my book, “Making It in Manhattan,” when I was still working at InStyle, I just had this idea that I wanted to give back to the next generation in fashion and write an all-encompassing guidebook about how to make it in the industry. Through the process of writing that book and signing with a literary agent, she advised me to start a website called Making it in Manhattan, and that’s how I indirectly started a blog and began to grow a following.
I would describe my design aesthetic as everchanging. I don’t believe I have a distinct artistic vision, but I love to keep people on their toes for each coming collection. I design men, women, and occasionally even children, because having the opportunity to work with various ages and genders allows me to stay updated on all current trends. When I design, I am always driven toward fabrics that make the silhouettes speak for themselves. For this collection, I was inspired by people’s relationships and interactions in relation to the way waves from the ocean form and crash. I am continuously connecting each collection with a personal story, because that is what truly inspires me. In addition, I am drawn to creating sleek pieces that can be interchangeable in one’s wardrobe. As you can see in the top on Caroline, I love mixing fabrics with different levels of surface texture, creating bold statement pieces. My final senior collection will be showcased in Thomas Jefferson University’s Annual Fashion Show. I invite you to follow my work on Instagram @A.HutchinsonDesigns. I am excited to begin this new slice of fashion for BELLA, and for the inspirational collaboration working with author and influencer Caroline Vazzana, who will be highlighting the new designers in each coming issue. Anna Hutchinson 16
How would you define your style?
I sometimes joke that I am a super chic art teacher! I’m just very eclectic and colorful, and I love vintage shopping. I’d like to say I am really never afraid to try out new trends. One of my biggest mottos is to not look like anybody else, and to just always be a unique individual. Part of my style is always having fun…fashion should always be fun. You can’t take yourself too seriously, especially if you’re in a pink tutu and Manolos! Photography by VITAL AGIBALOW for HENSEL
How does it feel to have that instant connection with fame and really grow your brand?
It’s been a wild ride! I never intended to be an influencer, that wasn’t really my goal from the start. I just wanted to write this book and I have always had this eclectic, fun sense of style, so just to be able to show that is really great. Writing the career advice on my site is great, too—it’s a very searchable topic and very relatable toward this generation. People will look up things like, “How to get an internship,” and my website pops up. A lot of people are clicking through and visiting my Instagram. I feel very thankful and blessed to get to share my voice and my style with such an incredible community of people. It’s kind of like one of those dream jobs!
That’s awesome! What do you feel is the best part about being involved within the industry?
For my job in particular, I just love the creativity of it all. I get to work with so many incredible brands, people, and photographers, and I get to work on cool projects. It’s always so exciting, so creative, and there are no rules—you just get to really try a little bit of everything! You can be styling, writing, or creative-directing…I just love being able to work with up and coming brands and designers and also have that ability to collaborate with cool people every single day. I feel like I am finding a new designer every single day.
As you know, BELLA’s tagline is “Beauty Defined by You.” How would you define beauty?
Beauty is definitely within. I think the most beautiful people are the kindest people, the people who make me laugh uncontrollably, and the people who are just so uniquely themselves. Those are the people who I find the most beautiful and just so confident. They can walk into a room and own it, no matter what. I think that is true beauty. CVazzana

NOVA LORRAINE: LIFELONG LEARNER, CREATIVE FOUNDER, MOTHER By Bryson Littlejohn
Photographed by VITAL AGIBALOW For HENSEL • Styled by Janet Igah • Hair by Ashia Richardson • Makeup by Elisa Bailon
N
ova Lorraine started her career in medicine and holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology. She later made an award-winning decision to study fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Just recently, Nova was recently recognized for her efforts with a Top 50 in Fashion, Apparel, and Beauty Award. Early in her career, Nova received many accolades for her design sensibility, including Haute Couture Designer of the Year and multiple Rising Star Nominations by Fashion Group International. In addition, her designs have graced the big screen and television, as well as in the pages of Italian Vogue and Essence Magazine. In 2007, Nova launched Raine Magazine, an international media platform that features the next big names in fashion, culture, and technology.
FITNESS / WELLNESS
Have you ever faced the issue of burnout in your career? How did you overcome it?
Shortly after having my fourth child, I opened a store in New York. This was in addition to running my design company, consulting for other entrepreneurs, and launching Raine Magazine. When my youngest turned 2, I started to feel the mental drain of it all. It became harder and harder to want to go into the store, create new designs, or publish new issues for the magazine. I realized I was becoming burnt out. I didn’t love what I was creating anymore. I knew I needed a drastic change, especially in my environment to reinvigorate that spark that was once there— something I thought would never go dim. About a year later, we moved our family to coastal Florida to be near the beach. I knew that by being near the ocean, I would be able to replenish myself and find a new source of inspiration. The relocation led to growing Raine Magazine and getting my passion back for both fashion and performance.
Nova recently launched the “Unleash Your SuperNova,” a podcast in which she interviews the gutsiest creatives from around the globe. Currently, Nova is entering back into the performance realm with acting and improv and recently landed a role in her third theatrical stage production. She also enjoys lecturing at universities, public speaking, and writing poetry in her free time.
MENTORS / ADVICE
What advice would you lend to a budding talent on the rise in your chosen field?
Before embarking on any journey, take the time to examine your “why.” That is your North Star for guiding your path. It’s good to do this check-in every six months to help keep you on track.
MEMORIES
From an early age, your love for fashion and performing flourished, allowing you to become a dancer, fashion designer, and actor. Can you describe your experiences and how they helped fine-tune your crafts?
OBSTACLES
What is your viewpoint of failure and how best to deal with it?
I never had any formal training in dance, just a passion for expressing myself through that medium. The opportunity presented itself in college, when I was asked to join a dance team to compete for a championship title at the university’s talent competition. Our dance team won and was also invited to compete on MTV. Excitedly enough, we won that competition as well. Both of those experiences gave me the confidence to audition for a professional dance company in Boston. That was such an incredible time in my life. In terms of fashion, graduate school was cut short when I opted to leave after getting my master’s in clinical psychology in order to go to New York City to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology. It’s funny how unpredictable yet thrilling life is.
As a friend once shared with me, failure is a form of learning or refinement. Welcome the failures— they help make you stronger and wiser if you allow them to.
THE REAL YOU
Describe yourself in five words or less.
Creative, passionate, compassionate, imaginative, and curious.
What are your superpowers, and how have they helped you excel?
Intuition, empathy, and storytelling. I like to use my gut to guide me, my sensitivity to better understand people, and my passion for teaching through words and pictures to inspire.
MINDSET
FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES
I believe a creative entrepreneur is someone who uses their creative gifts to produce something that helps better a community of people, no matter how big or small.
I am very excited about publishing my book about bridging the gap between creativity and entrepreneurship, growing the Raine Podcast Network, and releasing more of my creative writing to the world.
How would you describe a creative entrepreneur?

Christian Benner: More Than Just
O
By Amanda Mactas
ne of my first years attending New York Fashion Week, I went to a show featuring up-and-coming designers, one of whom happened to be Christian Benner. For years I have followed the immeasurably cool fashion designer as he outfits music royalty like Lenny Kravitz, Lady Gaga, and Steven Tyler, speaks out about mental health, addiction and the strange new age of social media, and brings a refreshing nostalgia to his work. Christian’s label is more than just fashion, it’s a part of your soul. From working at soul-sucking corporate fashion jobs to getting discovered by Donatella Versace at a luxury vintage retail store to getting fired and searching for his purpose, Christian, like most of us, went through many trials and errors on his road to success. And still, he remains humble and shocked by how his life turned out. “It’s what I’m supposed to be doing. I don’t care if I’m struggling, or it’s hard, or whatever. I’m doing what I love,” he explains. “Each day is a different day. I work seven days; I’m exhausted, but I’m good. I don’t want it any other way.” Christian is most well known for his custom leather jackets and distressed t-shirts, and the design process is quite extensive. When someone comes in for a custom piece, it can take about a month—from sizing to concept to completion. “We put on a record and we talk,” Christian explains. “And my god, music is powerful. I don’t care who you are, I don’t care if you don’t know a single band, you could put two people in the same room and you put on a song and they can relate somehow. The most powerful thing in the world is music.” People from all walks of life come into his store, from Wall Street brokers and CEOs to princesses, rock stars, and your average Joes. Designing a piece with Christian is about so much more than fashion—it’s about forming a connection, listening and learning from other people, and exploring your soul. It’s a lost art, and Christian Benner has mastered it.
“That’s the powerful thing about talking to people—you get to know them. When I earn their trust and they start to get comfortable, they tell me things about their lives that they want to incorporate [into a jacket].” Christian continues.
His ultimate goal: To give people
confidence. “These jackets—they’re like shields…they’re like little cloaks you put on that will give you that extra boost of confidence. I want you to put that thing on and feel like the most badass person in the room. The relationships we have created are just the most powerful relationships in the world.”
On getting started: “I started to develop some sort of desire inside me, and I didn’t know what it was, but I knew there was something that needed to come out. I needed to find a medium to express something because it was building and building and building.”
On New York: “It raised me, it swallowed me, [it] spit me back out, and raised me again. It has seen every bit of me. It’s turned me into this person I am today, and I owe so much to it. New York is changing...but it’s still New York to me.”
On music: “It’s a form of art I think
everyone can kind of agree upon. For me, it was like a drug. I would listen to songs over and over and over and they became like my friends; they were all I had.”
On life: “I’m a human being that’s
going through shit, trying to figure this thing out, but creating at the same time. Nothing is handed to me, nothing is easy. Every day is a struggle and every day is a battle, but I’m doing it and I want you to know that you can do it [too.] That’s what I want to prove to people. Nobody’s figured it out yet, but I think we’re taking strides for self-care.”
“I have to get a message out to people.
I think clothing is it.”

GLOW
BACK By Charlotte Traas, Director of Product Education for New Chapter
While starting from the outside seems like the best solution, the secret I’ve found to great-looking skin starts from within. In today’s survival game of stress, over-caffeinating, dehydration, and my personal favorite—sleep deprivation—my skin needs a sure thing, and it gets it…with collagen.
What is collagen?
Your body builds a network of fibrous structural protein called collagen that your body actually makes. Collagen comprises the majority of the dry weight of your skin and provides the volume that keeps skin firm and fine lines at bay. While your body makes its own collagen, your collagen clock starts winding down at the ripe old age of 21, and production decreases even more after menopause. Add in a high sugar diet, smoking, and exposure to sunlight, and your collagen levels could be even more compromised.
How does collagen work?
Taking a hydrolyzed collagen supplement functions very similarly to how your own body’s collagen works. While there are 28 different types of collagen, your body takes the collagen you give it and sends it to your skin, tendons, organs, and even your eyes where it’s needed.
How do you know which one to choose?
While most collagens are hydrolyzed, meaning they have been broken down so it’s easier for your body to absorb, many collagen products fall short on sourcing. Unfortunately, there is no vegetarian or vegan source of collagen available that isn’t genetically modified, so it’s important to look for a responsibly-sourced product. You want to ensure the cows and chickens have been humanely treated, grass-fed, and had cage-free, antibiotic-free, and hormone-free lives. That’s a tall order that many collagen brands aren’t able to achieve, and while it should be the standard, I’ve only been able to find it in New Chapter’s collagen products. I start my morning with my protein smoothie mixed with a scoop of my favorite collagen, which includes botanical beauty powerhouse sea buckthorn. Sea buckthorn is known for being an antioxidant-rich skin protectant that’s loaded with collagen’s favorite BFF, vitamin C.
An important addition…
The results are clear.
If you want your collagen to work properly, Research consistently shows that supplementing with Charlotte Traas you should include a great vitamin C collagen improves skin elasticity in women aged 35-55, supplement like New Chapter’s Fermented boosting skin’s moisture retention and reducing fine lines and wrinkles in as Vitamin C Complex. Without adequate amounts of vitamin C, little as eight weeks. Why eight weeks? Your skin goes through a full skin you may have trouble storing, utilizing, or producing your own collagen. cycle every six to eight weeks, so to see the benefit of any new skin regimen, Fermented Vitamin C helps your body easily absorb the valuable C and you normally have to wait until you get through one full cycle to start boosts your collagen game. noticing results. 38

UNDER THE INFLUENCER BY DR. ROBI LUDWIG
42
I
nfluencers…they show up on our social media feed with a seemingly perfect life. They have a charismatic way that makes them instantaneously intriguing. Their fans and followers wonder how they navigate through the complexities of life so easily, effortlessly, and admirably. INFLUENCERS GIVE US A PEEK INTO A PRISTINE YET SOMEWHAT RELATABLE WORLD—a world we’d like
to inhabit if we could only find the correct rulebook or GPS map to help get us there. Unlike celebrities, whose daily lives exist in a world removed from their fans, influencers are more like us. Their world feels more accessible and therefore more achievable. Because of the similarities influencers share with their followers, they are in a unique position to help them solve their fears, concerns, problems, and even their anxieties. INFLUENCERS HAVE AN IMPACT ON THEIR AUDIENCE BECAUSE THEIR FOLLOWERS TRUST THEM.
Before making a purchase, consumers want some kind of proof that the product works. Influencers are powerful at shaping our perceptions, which affect our behaviors. When we follow our favorite influencers, we are not only buying what they are selling, but also the image, story, and magic behind their personalized recommendations. Psychologists call this “subconscious marketing.” Did you know that Influencers can shape our behavior, thoughts, and attitudes without us even realizing it? It’s true! It’s called “influencer marketing,” a term that increased by 325% in Google searches in 2017. The biggest platform for influencer marketing can be found on Instagram. Influencers are impactful persuaders because they take away our insecurities about what to get by showing us what’s in and what’s valuable. They become authentic role models for how to live a life well-lived. The influencer obsession might seem new, but it relies on long-standing psychological marketing techniques that have been around forever. Social media influencers are effective because of the authoritative position they hold. Successful influencers provide a large number of followers with something called “social proof.” Because others value their opinion and respect their judgments, fans believe what their favorite influencer is doing or choosing is right. The thinking goes something like this: “IF IT’S GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE INFLUENCER, IT MUST BE GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME.”
Influencers are also attractive. We are all prone to something called the “attractiveness bias.” We assume either consciously or unconsciously that attractive or alluring individuals have other great qualities, too. It’s also known as the “halo effect.” What is beautiful is considered good, smart, and credible. These assumptions can spill over into the brands endorsed by influencers. In an attempt to be like these idealized influencers, we watch what they do and choose, so we too can become more like them. INFLUENCERS ARE RELATABLE ROLE MODELS
Influencers are perceived by their fans to be down-to-earth people who are important yet within our reach. They post about their everyday lives, stay connected to their followers, and even interact with many of them directly. They are usually in the same age demographic as their followers, and the influencer and audience typically share the same interests and tendencies. This ties in closely with another psychological concept called “social identity theory.” When people view themselves as belonging to a group of similar people, the opinions of the members in this group are viewed as having even more weight and worth. The younger generation, especially teens, look up to role models who are easy to identify with and for whom they have positive feelings. One of the biggest reasons influencers have taken on such a broad appeal is because they are our modern-day, real-life archetypes who embody the people we wish to be. We need role models in our lives. They help motivate us to achieve our ambitious or hard-toaccomplish goals. They help us stay on track and serve as a reminder for what can be if we stick to a plan and keep persevering. INFLUENCERS SERVE AS AN IMPORTANT REMINDER THAT EVEN THE DIFFICULT IS DOABLE.
They are representations of the possible, and as such serve as creative inspiration. They embody their fans' already existing goals on many levels. They send the hopeful message that “you can be like me, too”—happy, beautiful, and successful. That message alone is a powerful and seductive motivator to watch, follow, and use as inspiration.

KELLY LYNN
Adams
Kelly Lynn Adams International Executive and Professional Life and Success Coach, Speaker NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES KellyLynnAdams.com MY BUSINESS: Through coaching and speaking, I am a trusted source of
transformation. I am committed to helping people tap into their untapped potential, starting from the inside out, in all areas of life—from creating more success, leadership, joy, and fulfillment. Whether through coaching or speaking, I support people in letting go of old beliefs, judgments, and fears that block many from what they want most in life and business, so that they can start to create and live a life and business beyond their wildest dreams. When we shift our mindsets and perceptions, we can see what is truly possible, which sometimes can extend beyond our wildest expectations. I coach men and women, including executives, entrepreneurs, celebrities, coaches, speakers, high achievers, and anyone in between. WHY IT WAS LAUNCHED: I fell into coaching and speaking while
building another business a few years ago; however, I have always been investing in my own personal development, transformation, and growth for years—I am a product of coaching. Throughout the years, I saw the tremendous impact and influence that coaching had in every area of my life. After experiencing so much success and growth of my own, I wanted to co-create and help others tap into their own potential. There are too many people in this world who are stuck, settling, struggling, and stopping their own successes. And it doesn’t have to be that way; we are powerful beyond measure. Coaching comes from both the worlds of athletics and entertainment, and it’s no secret that the best athletes and actors in the world have coaches. MY INFLUENCERS: There have been so many who have influenced and
mentored me throughout the years. However, I would have to say today my biggest influencer when it comes to running my business would be Kris Jenner. As a businesswoman, she has unshakeable confidence, relentless tenacity managing her children’s careers, has an extremely strong work ethic, and she maximizes innovation by constantly creating new ventures or collaborations wherever she sees opportunity. Year after year, she keeps on creating and achieving success.
MOST REWARDING: Witnessing my clients’
successes and transformations and watching them create the lives and businesses of their dreams, and being a part of their journey. What has also been rewarding is seeing people have breakthroughs and/ or a-ha moments when I speak to different groups, organizations, and companies. SECRETS TO MY SUCCESS: Regardless
of how I feel and what is going on in my life, the secrets to my success have been being persistent, failing forward (meaning getting better than I was yesterday), investing and believing in myself, taking consistent action (even if it’s one thing a day), and always connecting, meeting, and networking with others—you never know who you can serve, impact, and influence. 45

major financial challenges after being downsized and I had to do something about it. I went to a financial presentation and saw there was a need to share the financial education I had learned to help myself. That is when I became a representative for Primerica. I realized that if I needed help but didn’t know where to go for it, there had to be other people out there in the same predicament. MY INFLUENCER: I know that everyone would
expect me to say a famous actress, writer, or even an entertainer. But the person who influenced me was someone that I met about six years ago. I saw how she
was a go-getter, a hard worker, and always kept her eye on the prize. No matter what people thought of her, she never let it affect her—well, not in the open. There was a friendship connection when I first met her. She always wanted to help other women reach success. She has had a wonderful journey since then, and I am glad I was there to witness it. If I had to choose a friend to be in business with, it would be her. I want to thank Vanessa Coppes, my influencer, for showing me that anything is possible if you put your mind to it and work hard to get it. I have become such a better businessperson being around Vanessa— everything that comes her way is well deserved. MOST REWARDING: The freedom of time that it gives me to
spend more quality time with my family and the wonderful people I get to meet. I get fired up when I am teaching financial literacy, which enables people to take control of their financial futures. I am very passionate about helping people, especially women. I will continue to make a difference in other’s lives. SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: Having goals and a vision of what
you want life to look like. You must be honest, sincere, and trustworthy. Stay focused while being persistent and passionate, and work hard. You especially need to enjoy what you are doing. 46

Wunderlich Kaplan Communications Partner and Co-Founder NEW YORK, NY Wkc.rocks MY BUSINESS: We are a public relations
firm. We represent a variety of lifestyle, wellness brands, and restaurants with offices in New York, Boston, and Miami. Brands hire us to get them places in magazines, on television, in blogs, and with influencers and celebrities. WHY IT WAS LAUNCHED: I actually
merged my previous agency with my now business partner’s and we formed Wunderlich Kaplan Communications in 2011. We are yin and yang and definitely stronger as a team than on our own. As a bonus, we became best friends along the way. MY INFLUENCERS: My first and
foremost, as cheesy as this is, is my business partner. I met Gwen Wunderlich when I was very young. I had my own social media agency and she had her PR company. She taught me everything I know about this business. In addition, I know a lot of brilliant people,
however, I can say with certainty that I have never met anyone who is more creative, has bigger or better ideas, is more charismatic, or is more positive than her. She radiates good energy and that’s exactly what she attracts. I strive to be more like her every day. Without her, I would not be where I am today. Second is my husband—his work ethic and tenacity inspire me every day. Lastly, my dad, the very first entrepreneur I ever knew. He always taught me to march to the beat of my own drum at all costs. MOST REWARDING: I thrive on being
able to move the needle for brands, creating a culture, inspiring a movement, and cultivating a lifestyle. SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: Being
a lifelong learner, I have a total thirst for knowledge about anything and everything. I will win any trivia night there is due to my copious consumption of random documentaries and books. Also, just keep going and never ever accept no as an answer. 47 Dynamic Duo: Business partners Dara Kaplan and Gwen Wunderlich

person has influenced me in my career. Many people have inspired me along my journey, teaching me dedication, respect, and instilling important values in me. MOST REWARDING: There are many rewarding
aspects to running my own business, one of which is the ability to fund a great life. Being a single mom, supporting my two girls, and being able to “be there” for them has been my biggest reward in addition to helping my parents along the way and paying it forward to others. SECRETS TO MY SUCCESS: My mindset and

influencer. He works in corporate and grew up working for his parents. He has helped me understand how important it is to be an expert in your field and to let people know what you do best. He is always there to bounce ideas off of and he has also helped me set and achieve my goals and dreams for Nicholas Pools. MOST REWARDING: The most rewarding aspect of

Taking the Health & Wellness Industry by Storm,
One Cup of Coffee at a Time By Jennifer DeCillis
M
aria Giambrone is a wife, mother, entrepreneur, certified holistic nutritionist, and business coach. If that seems like a lot to juggle, that’s because it is. But this fearless female is laying the groundwork for a strong and successful team underneath of her and for her future as a business owner. Making strides professionally for many years now, Maria’s true success has shown through in her latest venture with Elevate “Happy” Coffee—a health conscious, energy-boosting, immune-supporting, metabolismaccelerating wonder brew that has taken the industry by storm. So, how does this modern-day influencer lead a team of other strong, flourishing women, while continuing to foster her own thriving ventures? BELLA sat down with Maria to learn her secrets on influence, achievement, and personal growth.
Share with our readers how your journey began into becoming an entrepreneur.
I worked in corporate America for almost 25 years for very high-profile, visible executives. I’ve always loved my jobs and what I did, however, as time went on, I knew I didn’t want to do that forever—especially after having a family. I had always been into health and wellness (I also have a background in science), so over the years, I became certified in different areas of holistic nutrition. I also had a coaching business on the side.
A business owner and also an influencer, you lead a team of people who follow, work for, and trust in you. How does it feel to be someone of such influence?
Being an influencer is not something I take lightly. I know a lot of people follow my recommendations in health and wellness, so I make sure to only promote things that would provide benefit to others. As for my team, we have so many different people with different backgrounds committed to the same goal—changing lives mentally, physically, and financially. It’s easy to lead when you have the same purpose and mission.
In addition to owning your own business, you are also certified in holistic nutrition. How does this influence your approach to business, as well as your personal life?
I’m always incorporating a holistic approach into the work I do. Helping people become a better version of themselves is something that drives me and makes me feel fulfilled.
Who are some of the people who influence or have influenced you most?
I’m big into personal development. I follow and partner with influencers like Tony Robbins…Gary Vaynerchuk…anyone who makes you step out of your comfort zone and grow as an individual. I’m a big promoter of helping people change their lives and their mindsets because I truly believe you can live the life of your dreams if you put work into yourself.
What are some of your goals for the future or things to come that you are excited about?
There are so many exciting things that are coming up! We are launching some more feel-good products, and I just started writing a book. I’m always looking for ways to be innovative and ahead of the game, and for things that help elevate the lives of others.

CEO & EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Influence is the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something. There have been so many people and instances that have shaped who I am today, but my mother by far has been the most influential person in my life. While she couldn’t find the proper words to guide me as a teenager, after I had my own children, so much came into perspective for me.
WHO
Influenced HAS
YOU THE
Most
My mother is the reason I believe I am capable of anything I set out to do. She continuously encouraged me to keep going despite the challenges that came my way. In her own pursuit of personal development, it’s the model I had to continue learning, striving to do and be better than I was yesterday. At 66, my mom is as hardworking and resilient as ever, and it’s no wonder everyone who comes in contact with her leaves wanting to be and do better for themselves.
?
IN LIFE OR BUSINESS
My father also influenced my tenacity and pursuit of self-improvement. He pursued his ongoing education until the day he passed, something I hope to instill in my own children. I have always surrounded myself with people from whom I can learn. Big or small, everyone in our lives can influence the decisions we make and impact who we become. The key will always be in how much or how little we allow that impact to be. As it’s been said, you are the product of the six people you associate yourself with the most. Choose wisely and the net of influence you cast will be bountiful.
JONATHAN CALIXTO
FASHION CORRESPONDENT
When it comes to my professional life, I am thankful to have been influenced by many of the empowering women constantly surrounding me. At my first internship, I worked for TV host Lilliana Vazquez and her small but mighty team at the time, Hodaly Garcia and Jordan Pagano. And then there were the trailblazing women of Riviere Agency, along with some of the most inspiring women with great journeys to share at BELLA Magazine. I am influenced by their commitment to uplifting their communities and using their voice for change, and never taking “no” for an answer. Thank you for inspiring me and many others!

I am forever inspired by all of the amazing women in my life, especially those in my family. My grandmother, mom, and sister have all played huge roles in shaping who I am—always inspiring me to do better, dream big, and never settle for less.

MINDY GURA & PAULA ORLAN THE STYLE DUO
Growing up with the most fashionable grandmother was probably the biggest influence for our passion for fashion. Our grandma Sara taught us early on that shopping could be a fun sport we could do together and that finding the bargains was the most exciting part. She taught us how to mix high-end splurges with bargain basics, and we always had the most fun shopping with her. We owe our success in our styling careers to our beautiful grandmother.
JANENE MASCARELLA
BEAUTY DIRECTOR
By far, my biggest influencer in fashion, style, beauty (and life!) is my 15-year old daughter, Kimberly. She’s the smartest, sweetest, strongest—and most stylish—person I have ever met. (She’s also a super talented artist!) I learn so much from her every single day and admire her confidence. If I want to know what’s hip in makeup and fashion trends, I turn to her. I’m simply in awe of her beauty—inside and out.
CHERYL DEVINE

As a child, my dad was a tremendous influence in my life. He taught me right from wrong and was respected by everyone with whom he came in contact. You could hear his laughter from another room, and he taught me confidence. He would take the time every weekend to plan trips for us to spend quality time, which built a lifetime of memories. Even though he passed when I was a young child, he is the reason I am who I am today. He still lives within me even though he is no longer with me. Thank you, Dad, for a lifetime of love and giving me the skills to become who I am today. LYNETTE BARBIERI GINA LAGUARDIA EDITORIAL DIRECTOR
I feel like I’m the product of many, many influencers as I’ve been blessed with so many role models and mentors over the course of my career.
Thinking back to when I first started out as an editor, one of the first people who really gave me a shot was Luciano Rammairone. He was the publisher of College Bound Magazine, a small, NYC-based magazine that emerged in the mid-90s and grew to a national media company on which I built my career for nearly two decades. Luciano entrusted me with a role for which I was not initially qualified, giving me enormous confidence and the “make it happen” nod that allowed me to work alongside some of the best of the best and forge lifelong friendships and working partnerships. Thanks to his leadership and the example he set for me early on—an amazing work ethic, steadfastness to get the job done, and enormous belief in the potential of others—I was privy to experiences and accomplishments for which I will be forever grateful.
ALEXANDRA ANASTASIO
ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR
In looking back at the people who have been influential in my life from a professional standpoint, I must give credit to Claire Regan, a journalist and assistant professor at Wagner College who took me under her wing. From the moment I enrolled in my first journalism class, I knew I was meant to tell stories. Under Claire’s guidance, I learned the fundamentals of my craft, as well as gained the confidence to pursue my passion. Even after graduation, she continued to be a strong presence in my life, someone I could turn to when it came to navigating my career. Fast-forward many years and I am still being influenced by those around me with whom I’ve been fortunate to work with and learn from. I truly believe education continues even after you’ve left the classroom.
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE
I’ve been in my business for over two decades. There is no question some people play a significant role in your life and in your career. I have met many people at different times through my journey that have had a positive influence on my business. An amazing leader, role model, and friend, Mike Pressler, spoke in front of a room once about always taking the high road; no matter what level of success you experience, stay humble. Those words taught me how to work with my team, make people feel special, and treat others the way you wish to be treated. The person who has more recently had an impact on my business is my business partner, Vanessa Coppes. She has an amazing ability to sell the vision! She also has a tremendous work ethic. When I just don’t want to get up and keep going or work on something that isn’t happening the way I would like it to, watching her has inspired me and given me the faith and belief that anything is possible. My grandmother was my best friend and the most selfless, giving person I have ever met. She taught me how to be more giving, and there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about her. Lastly, I believe the most positive influence on my business now comes from the conglomerate of women with whom I get to surround myself every day. Together, we grow, work through adversity, and overcome obstacles to reach our goals.
JENNIFER DECILLIS PUBLISHER
I would be remiss to say that just one individual has influenced my life, because I come from such a strong, dynamic family of influential people. My grandmother, Barbara, is the matriarch who started this core of resilient women, and she has taught me the importance of family, faith, and unequivocal love. She reminds me that life is precious, and I cherish how much we laugh together. My mother, Lisa, teaches me every day the importance of perseverance and pursuing your dreams in life. My aunts remind me that life should be lived to the fullest and it’s OK to be a little crazy along the way. My cousins—my goofballs—keep me young and excited for the future of family holidays with our own families. And there there’s my Rachie, more of a sister to me than anything. While growing up alongside her, she inspired me to mature into an exceptional woman, like her. And, of course, there are my brothers; they have always been the men that occupy my heart, My decisions in life have been greatly affected by how much of a mentor I could be to both of them as their big sister.

In an Age of Influencers
JOSEPH SEGEL Was One of the Forefathers
I
By Jennifer DeCillis
n an age of Instagram influencers and social media tycoons, Joseph Segel was a pioneer, forever changing the way the world shops. Way before the advent of online shopping and two-hour delivery at the click of a button, Joe had a vision to transform the way society acted as consumers. He paved the way for how we utilize shopping tools and outlets today.
To begin with, I am so sorry for your loss. Your father was truly an inspiration to many.
Born into the hard-working roots of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Joe was a true businessman as founder of an endless number of different companies, including the Franklin Mint. Hands down, Joe’s biggest claim to fame was creating the television-shopping phenomenon QVC. Established in 1986, QVC stood for Quality, Value, Convenience—and the acronym didn’t fall short on living up to its meaning.
If you could go back in time 30+ years, TV shopping was very disorganized and a little dishonest.
Thanks. We knew a few weeks before his death that the end was near, and so did my father. He was prepared. He even stated while lying there in bad … “I have no regrets!” He truly had a great life and enjoyed what he did throughout.
Joseph was determined to revolutionize the way people shop and to improve upon outlets already in place. What was something unique that he implemented with QVC to set himself apart?
Joseph and Marvin Segel
As an example, no shopping channel ever showed the shipping and handling charges on the screen. My father wanted QVC to do that—one executive even left the company over this issue. But he was right! He always wanted to do what was right for the customer. He also wanted QVC to be more informative and less high-pressure sales.
Joe created the powerhouse shopping network in response to his belief that he could improve upon the Home Shopping Network, and he did just that. His hosts were engaging, he was the first to institute “gaming” in order to keep audiences engaged, and the many people who knew, worked with, and came in contact with Joe were forever touched by his presence.
In addition to QVC, your father founded an array of other companies, including the Franklin Mint. How did he manage to juggle it all, and what was it about him that allowed him to conquer so many different business ventures?
My father was laser-focused on one company at a time and very quickly would know almost all there is to know about that company and the industry. It was not 22 companies at one time, but one company done right every time.
Not only was Joe an entrepreneur ahead of his time, he also served as a philanthropist and one of the earliest members of Philabundance, a chapter of Feeding America based in his hometown of Philadelphia. Joe was also a social beacon of hope, providing more jobs to his community than had ever been seen. And, last but not least, he was a family man, who instilled his beliefs, work ethic, and wisdom in his children.
Would you share with us some of the last words of wisdom he imparted on his family in his final moments?
Marvin Segel, Joseph’s son, sat down with BELLA to shed a little more light on his father’s legacy and his influence on the world. Marvin Segel is committed to continuing his father’s legacy.

As one of the most successful and powerful female producers in Hollywood, Dany Garcia is also one of the hardest-working women in the industry. To those closest to her, it’s no surprise that the young girl who began working at 12 years old, with the goal of enhancing the lives of others, would be standing where she is today. Beginning her career in finance, Dany eventually took over the reins of Dwayne Johnson’s career, and began carving out her place in the entertainment space. “We were both passionate about building something that had never been done before in the industry and agreed that having me in a business leadership role would be a key component.” Today she runs both The Garcia Companies and TGC Management, and is a co-founder alongside Dwayne of Seven Bucks Production. Responsible for some of the biggest box office hits to date, including “Hobbs & Shaw” and “Jumanji: The Next Level,” which recently broke box office records, Dany continues to break ground and lead the way for other women in the industry. BELLA sat down with the powerhouse to discuss her career, the influential forces in her life, and what’s up next in 2020.
Who has been inspirational to you in your journey?
I’ve been so grateful to find an abundance of inspiration and guidance along my journey. Growing up I had no exposure to CEOs or corporate leadership, or even understood the concept of both ideals. But I did have parents who instilled within me work values and ethics that have been the cornerstone of my daily life. My mother was a strong, opinionated woman with an unflappable character, who believed wholeheartedly in self-respect and ambition. When I studied at the University of Miami and worked in the dean’s office at the School of Business, the women executives who ran the various programs became my mentors; they were the first female leaders I was exposed to. They had a great impact on my life and introduced me to the professional world while simultaneously refining and shaping my business acumen. And finally, both my daughter [Simone Garcia Johnson] and husband [Dave Rienzi] have impacted who I am today. They have cultivated my personal capacity and unwaveringly encouraged and supported me through all the expressions of my life.
This October you and Dwayne are launching Athleticon, a convention that is truly the first of its kind. How did the idea come to life? Athleticon has been years in the making. It’s a culmination of what we live and love—athletics, wellness, and entertainment. We’ve always wanted to do something like this on a massive scale, where we could create an experiential event that would inspire, delight, educate, and entertain audiences in the pillars that have added so much value to our lives and enabled us to reach millions of people around the world.
What types of events can we expect to see?
We’ll be hosting inspiring, groundbreaking speakers, exercise classes and wellness workshop, and we’ll have a massive Saturday night music festival with exciting headliners. We’ll also be showcasing the fun of “Cheat Meal Sunday.” There’s going to be competitions, exhibitions, and participatory experiences both on a professional and amateur basis with athletes from all over the world.
How will the bodybuilding competitions stand out at Athleticon?
There will be an IFBB professional competition, as well as an NPC amateur competition. Our professional competition is an invitation-only event that will showcase some of the most beautiful physiques in our industry. And our NCP amateur competitors will be specifically from around the globe and will have the opportunity to earn their IFBB professional status at our show.
In 2008 you took your passion for fitness to the next level. What inspired you to become a professional bodybuilder?
When I was 13, I opened an issue of Muscle & Fitness magazine and saw professional female bodybuilders for Photography by Per Bernal the first time. I was moved by their symmetry and the shape of their physiques, so much so that I started following these incredible women athletes and their sport. It wasn’t until I met my husband that all the pieces aligned to create the space and access I needed to commit to finally realizing my dream.
How has Dave been influential in helping you focus on this part of your life?
Dave has impacted my life in the most meaningful way. He is a master trainer, so I am able to gather and learn so much information from him as an athlete. Training, professional bodybuilding, and athletics are such important aspects of my life, and he taught me that I had an incredible physical capacity. He took me five levels higher and opened a door for me. What he has taught me in the gym—about myself, my strengths, what I can build, and who I can be— has made an unbelievable impact.
Has being a competitive athlete had a positive effect on the types of stories you choose to bring to life on film and TV?
Absolutely. The process that is a part of my sport is a journey of methodically confronting and overcoming both physical and mental challenges on a daily basis. It’s a transformative process that leaves you deeply enriched and incredibly fine-tuned. I love storytelling that gets to capture those elements.
What additional projects are you excited for in 2020?
It will be a full and fantastic year! Our first Seven Bucks Productions feature film with Photography by Kristen Randol Netflix, “Red Notice,” featuring Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, is scheduled for release this year. It is our first collaboration with the streaming giant. We are launching our Teremana tequila line this month, a passion project of ours that has been in the incubator for some time. We also have some exciting new products in the water space with our VOSS partnership, as well as a few more surprises up our sleeves that I can’t discuss just yet.

ocial media has become a go-to for millions of people around the world, and Lilliana Vazquez, host of “E! News” and “Pop of the Morning,” recently shared her journey from blogger to host. Known for her expertise in fashion and style, Lilliana capitalized on her interest in trends and storytelling to create a career outside of social media—proving that no matter your age or culture, you can do it.
Timing is everything, and the 2008 recession was part of why Lilliana's blog succeeded. It resonated with so many people at a time when they had to be frugal with their spending. Another reason it worked was Lilliana’s commitment to redefine what “cheap” meant for an entire generation. She heralded the notion that “being cheap” wasn’t a bad thing, but more so of being conscious of where your money is going.

In 2008, Lilliana launched “The Cheap Chicas Guide to Style,” a fashion blog that revolved around spending on a budget. In a time when there was no set structure for what a blog should be, Lilliana knew she had something special to offer. Inspired by other bloggers at the time like Bryanboy, Susie Lau of Susie Bubble, and Emily Schuman’s “Cupcakes and Cashmere,” she decided to research what worked and felt most authentic. For 30 days, she wrote on her blog three times a day while it was still an unpublished site. Once she completed the 30 days, she decided to make it public. With a library of 90 completed posts, this immediately set her blog apart from others.

As the industry continues to evolve, Lilliana has found new ways to connect with her audience—by creating fun videos taking followers behind the scenes of “E! Lilliana continues to stay one step ahead, proving how much is possible when you love what you do and go out and get it. “No one will ever give you what you want if you don’t ask for it,” was the advice given to her by TV executive producer Amy Rosenblum. Another important quote she carries daily is, “Always go out into the day and be grateful and kind.”

s a full-time actress, mother, and human rights activist, it can be said that some of Marisol Nichols’ biggest work is not what you see on TV but rather what’s done offscreen in a completely different setting. A humanitarian and an avid philanthropist, the actress works tirelessly to help put an end to human trafficking. “The first time I heard the phrase, ‘You can sell a drug once but you can sell a human being over and over again,’ it made me want to throw up,” she says. Marisol wanted to be more than just a spokesperson when it came to inspiring others to join in the fight against human trafficking. As a result, she started Foundation for a Slavery Free World, a non-profit organization dedicating to eradicating all forms of modern-day slavery worldwide. BELLA sat down with Marisol to learn more about the ways in which she has been inspiring change behind the scenes, along with the influential forces that helped get her to where she is today.
70
You tried out for a play in college and landed the lead role, which you didn’t think you deserved. The director and speech coach thought differently. How were they influential in your life?
They were the first people to encourage and believe in me, and they became the most stable people in my life. Up until that point, my childhood had been kind of crazy.
Would you say landing that role helped you start over?
It was 100% a second chance. The first half of my life was a bit nuts—there were a lot of mistakes—and now here was this opportunity to change it all around. I hadn’t found anything I was good at, or that I thought I was good at. When I got on that stage, it felt like the greatest thing, and then they asked me to join their theater team and compete. I thought, ‘Absolutely, let me dive in,’ because this is something I can hang on to, something that can turn my life around.
Was there a defining moment that created an imprint on your life?
The two coaches helped me catch up to the rest of the group. Within three months, I was competing in the national championship against these other colleges and I won! I was used to losing all the time in life and that changed. I now had a different viewpoint—I can do something, and if I work hard, I can achieve anything. The experience boosted my confidence. I was being guided on this path and I thought, whatever this is that I happen to be good at instinctually keeps leading me to better and better places, so follow it through, and that’s what I did. I would never be here without that experience.
How have you taken the lessons you’ve learned and turned them outward to help others?
Helping others is one of my favorite things to do. I feel like we’re not really worth much unless we can help someone else. We need to share our stories because they’re encouraging—whether you’re an actor, artist, writer…whatever it is you’re trying to do, people need to know it doesn’t just naturally come easily. I know it helps me when I hear other people’s stories.
One of the ways you’ve used your voice is in the fight against human trafficking. What was it about this particular injustice that made you realize you had to do something?
I had a bad childhood; I ran away about four different times growing up. Fortunately, it was a different era at that time. Nowadays, if a girl runs away, within three to four days she [could be] picked up by a trafficker and forced to have sex with a stranger, sometimes 20 to 40 times a day. This could have happened to me so easily, and I thought, ‘What a horrific fate.’

What led you to start your own organization?
Human trafficking is a huge industry. Most people hear about it happening in other countries but not about the day-to-day in the United States. I was meeting people and talking to them, but it felt like I couldn’t get them to care unless it was happening in their own neighborhoods. Only then did it feel real to them. It became a crusade, and I couldn’t understand why everyone else wasn’t on it with me. I’m happy when celebrities take on causes and use their voices, but I didn’t want to just be a spokesperson; I wanted to do something—I couldn’t sleep. That’s why I formed my own non-profit, as well as why I support other groups. I have been privileged to go undercover and do all of these things because I wanted to do more than just raise awareness.
In what ways are you working to end human trafficking?
I have no illusions that my organization is going to end human trafficking, although I wish it would. However, one of the things I’ve been able to do is partner with law enforcement in undercover sting operations. I was legally deputized as an informant for the DA’s office. Cops do undercover sting operations all the time but the difference is they’re not actors, and that’s where I come in. I’m able to change my voice, make it sound like a young girl, and that gets the bad guys out of hiding so the cops can take them down. I also work closely with an amazing organization called OUR (Operation Underground Railroad). They’re the leading organization in the world that rescues women and children worldwide from trafficking. They are the ones who trained me, and together we’ve gone to many different places, lobbied in DC, and worked on events together. There is strength in numbers.

How can others get involved in the crusade to stop human trafficking?
Do a search for organizations within your own city. There are non-profits trying to combat this in most neighborhoods that can use the support.
Switching gears to your work on-screen, you currently portray Hermione Lodge on “Riverdale.” What do you enjoy about the role?
I’ve had the honor of bringing her to life for the last four years. I liked when they made Hermione tough and willing to go toe-to-toe with her husband. It was there for a while and the fans got behind that part of the character. No one likes to see anyone taken advantage of, and I love that they care about her. I’d be worried if they didn’t.
In May, fans can see you on the big-screen in “Spiral,” the ninth installment of the “Saw” movie franchise with Chris Rock as the executive producer. Describe the experience shooting this film.
It was awesome! I play the chief of police who is also Chris’ character’s boss. Samuel L. Jackson plays the former chief, and it was amazing working with these two giant powerhouses. I had an incredible time, and dare I say, it’s going to be scary. I can’t wait for the fans to see it.
What can they expect?
They can expect a very similar mystery to the other “Saw” films but with more of a puzzle to solve. I love a good mystery, and there is definitely that element as well as an urgency to solve it because people keep dying in horrific ways.
With all of the work you’re doing, what do you hope your daughter takes away from it?
I’m trying to show her that taking a strong role in whatever you’re doing, especially when you’re trying to help people, is a really valuable thing.

Silly Things We Do for
6 1
By Jarrod Thalheimer
T
Love
he desire we share to find—and hold onto—genuine, sincere love is coded deep in our DNA. And why not? Being in love is like throwing back a mug of the greatest intoxicant ever. Your previously selfcentered life suddenly resonates with meaning, as even the most mundane tasks become supercharged with a warm, pleasing emotion. Heck, even the sun seems to shine brighter. Everything goes better with love. Which is why we are all too willing to do some silly things to get it.
But is that so wrong? Sometimes adopting a silly habit or practice is a great way to let another person know just how much you care for them. Plus, it can be a useful way to expand your horizons. The problem emerges when that “silly” thing becomes the only thing keeping you together. Does that sound like your relationship? Have a look and see…
JOINING A CULT
First off, not all cults are religious in nature (I’m looking at you, latest gym craze). Anytime your personal feelings of obligation to participate start morphing into a fear of retribution if you don’t, it’s pretty clear things are headed in a cult-y direction.
Being with someone should never mean shutting off your own sense of right or wrong. If you start to feel the walls closing in, it’s time break down the door, jump the fence, and head for the hills. If your true love is really true, they’ll be close behind—and not looking to drag you back to the dark side.
2
WEIRD EATING
BIZARRE SEX
There really is no limit to the ways people can complicate the act of consuming calories. Keto, gluten-free, Snake Diet, DASH, raw food, pesca-pescatarian… you name it, and someone’s doing it with food. And every single one of us might be willing to try it on for a while just to please a potential lover. That’s a good thing. Unselfishness always is.
When you’re looking to make that first connection into something more intimate, the issues of different tastes or practices toward sex are bound to come up. That’s not a crime (usually), but it can be an area where one party finds themselves consenting to things they are not all that into just to keep the new flame’s interest.
Issues only arise when eating habits become so totalitarian that you are physically afraid to challenge them, fearing they would create a barrier between you. But sharing a meal is about togetherness. When food becomes a net divider, it’s time to grab the menu and order something new.
4
EXCESSIVE DRINKING OR DRUGGING Those first few months were a whirlwind of dining, dancing, and clubbing together. Off-the-hook parties, fun events, friends everywhere, and maybe an illicit toot or two. No big deal, right?
6 7 But what happens when the substance becomes so central to every good time that you feel you may be developing an addiction of your own just to keep up? That’s a question you don’t want to answer. If real life requires constant chemical enhancement, you’d better rethink your “choices”—before they stop being choices at all.
3
A good rule of thumb is if you can see yourself laughing about it a few years down the road, it’s probably OK. However, if even considering it makes you want a signed nondisclosure agreement, then it’s probably a bad idea. Love can make room for a little weird sex, but it doesn’t usually work the other way around.
5
MAKING SKETCHY INVESTMENTS
You dig this new guy. You really do. He’s smart and funny, and he has a super-awesome deal on a Florida timeshare. Or an investment club. Or a REIT he alone knows about that just needs some fresh cash to really take off. You want him to like you. Is it so bad to invest a little to show you have faith—and even convince your family and friends to do the same? Not necessarily. But you have to know that doing so puts you on a path littered with far more losers than winners. Maybe he really is a committed “deal guy” who wants the best for you. That’s great! But if the price for love is an investment from you, it’s better to sell this relationship at a loss and move on. Your future bank account (and heart) will thank you.
FAKING OBSESSIONS
EMBRACING THUG LIFE
She has an annual pass to Disneyland and goes every single week for a signed and dated photo with Mickey. He has every jersey design the Saints ever created and lives in a house that could be mistaken for the team’s gift shop.
You grew up straight as an arrow…never deviated from the 100% legal norm. Now you find yourself attracted to an outlaw, and the excitement is hard to ignore. Being on the edge can be thrilling—at least as long as things are going all right. But is this really what you want for the long haul?
You can try to be a fellow fanatic and maybe keep pace for a while, but if the obsession you’re trying to fake isn’t real, then whatever “love” you share isn’t likely to last. Tell the truth: If you’re just not that into Mickey, say so. If she can’t handle that, then neither can your relationship.
Being outside the system may seem free and fun, but you’d better be certain this is the world you want to live in. Thug life does not tolerate tourists. Make sure it’s what you really want—because eventually it will be too late to get out. 75

Relationships: REALITY vs. SOCIAL MEDIA By Ilsy J. Hoo
G
iven our collective obsession with #CoupleGoals, how do influencers in relationships keep it real on social media? I’ll admit, I hesitated to post online about my current relationship, but I also didn’t want to hide my love for my boyfriend from the world. Being a publicist and writer for BELLA, I often post about my life on social media, so why would I not post about my boyfriend (with his permission, of course)? According to GoodTherapy.org, couples utilize the internet and social media extensively for both personal and professional purposes. Healthy and emotionally intelligent relationships are based on honesty, trust, respect, and commitment. To get a better sense of the challenges inherent in being an influencer couple online, I interviewed Elijah and Esnavi Bland, a successful R&B music artist duo who has been married for three years and is very open about their love for each other on social media. They came into their relationship with their individual brands, and still maintain them now. As their relationship became part of their brand, a lot of people assume they will work together on every single project or have ideas for joint ventures presented to them. It’s all in love, but it does become challenging at times to separate their marriage from all that they do.
How did you meet?
We were friends on Facebook initially before we actually met in person at an event. After meeting in person, we went on our first date, which lasted 12 hours! We’ve been inseparable ever since.
Did you hesitate to make your relationship public on social media?
Yes, initially. It took some time for us to learn [about] one another before feeling comfortable sharing our relationship publicly. We reached a place where we both felt that sharing our love on social media could be impactful and also inspiring.
What do you think about our cultural obsession with the “perfect” relationship and #CoupleGoals?
There is no such thing as a “perfect” relationship. Every relationship has challenges, and the obsession is unfortunate because it’s easy to forget that most people are going through the same ups and downs in real life. Unless you know a couple’s issues inside and out, it’s unrealistic to have goals based solely on what you see.
Do you ever get private messages from followers asking for relationship advice?
Not that we can recall. However, we do get a lot of DMs from followers who are encouraged by our relationship and send words of admiration and positivity. Those messages inspire us to continue to share pieces of our life publicly.
How do you decide what to share and what not to share? Do you ask your partner permission before posting?
We feel it’s important to not overshare every single moment and keep certain things sacred, so we choose to post on a broader level. We discuss every post to make sure we are sharing things that we feel will resonate with our followers.
Research indicates a negative correlation between the amount someone posts about their relationship on social media and relationship satisfaction. What are your thoughts about this?
People should do whatever makes them happy. Sadly, for most people, social media represents a fantasy world instead of reflecting reality. If you’re constantly posting to fulfill a fantasy, you’re essentially feeding an insatiable desire or trying to fill a void. Ultimately, that can be damaging to the real relationship.
With social media heavily influencing the younger generation, what do you hope they will take away from how you portray your relationship in general?
Real love still exists. You can have a successful relationship, but it takes action. Don’t just seek love as an attainable “thing.” Actively love one another and invest in the partnership. We hope people are inspired to be themselves and celebrate their unique relationship journey.
Social media allows us to see real, ordinary people like Elijah and Esnavi in loving relationships. Just make sure you don’t get caught up in the #CoupleGoals and portray your relationship as perfect. Enjoy being in love with or without the “likes.” 76

Maureen Spataro is a survivor. The horror began at age 6, when she became a victim of pedophilia, rape, and other atrocities. She went on to build what she calls a “perfect life,” but at age 49, Maureen had a breakdown that put her into an outpatient program for three months of intensive therapy. It forced her to press the pause button on her life. In her book, Maureen shares her inspiring story of how she was then able to reset her life and move forward. OPENING UP TO CLOSE OLD WOUNDS Writing is its own form of therapy. Just ask Maureen Spataro. She documents her struggle to overcome a traumatic past as a victim of sexual abuse and domestic violence in her memoir, “Press Pause.” “I wanted people to actually see the journey, not just the results,” she says. She would like there to be “open conversation, not judgment” regarding her story and those of so many others. “We celebrate survivors of breast cancer. Why can’t we do the same for victims of violence?” Maureen asks. “They’ve survived these terrible moments and are willing to heal the right way and be happy.”
We’re excited to see that one of our favorite books from last summer, “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” is coming to FX as a limited series. Even cooler? The author, Taffy Brodesser-Akner, has signed on as a writer and executive producer of the series. No word on a cast yet, but with FX’s record of great shows (“Fosse/Verdon,” for one), we’re certain it’s going to be a talented one. 79

Plant Based
Baked Chocolate Fudge
Doughnuts By Kimberlee Ho of kickassbaker.com
Go ahead, enjoy a doughnut! Making small changes such as substituting plantbased ingredients for dairy and eggs in baked recipes can lead to big changes in your health without sacrificing any of the flavor or satisfaction.
80
PLANT-BASED BAKED CHOCOLATE FUDGE DOUGHNUTS Servings: 12 Prep Time: 10 minutes Bake Time: 12 minutes INGREDIENTS:
For the doughnuts
• 2 flax eggs (2 tablespoons flax meal + 5 tablespoons water) • ⅔ cup unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 ¾ cups unbleached all-purpose flour (or 1:1 gluten-free flour) • 1 ¼ cups brown sugar, such as Wholesome foods brand • ¾ teaspoon espresso powder • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon baking soda • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt • 1 cup dairy-free chocolate chips • ¾ cup full-fat coconut milk, at room temperature • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar • ½ cup melted coconut oil
For the chocolate icing:
• 1 cup dairy-free chocolate chips • 4 tablespoons coconut cream or full-fat coconut DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease the wells of two standard doughnut pans with coconut oil spray. Set aside. 2. Prepare the flax eggs: In a small bowl, place the flax meal and pour in the water. Stir to combine and set aside for at least 5 minutes while you begin preparing the doughnut batter. 3. Prepare the doughnut batter: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together cocoa powder, flour, brown sugar, espresso powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and chocolate chips. Set aside. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flax eggs, coconut milk, vanilla, and vinegar. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients, stirring with a wooden spoon to blend. Add in the melted coconut oil and stir until evenly combined. The batter will be thick. 4. Bake: Spoon batter in a gallon-sized ziptop bag and cut a ½-inch triangle off one of the corners to create a piping bag. Twist the top of the bag to prevent batter from pushing out of the top while you’re piping. Pipe the batter into prepared pans, filling them to the top but not overflowing. Bake doughnuts for 11 to 12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of one comes out clean. Remove the doughnuts from the oven and allow to cool in pans for 1 minute. Carefully turn doughnuts out onto a wire rack and allow to cool. 5. Prepare the icing: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips and coconut cream. Heat for 45-60 seconds, or just until the coconut cream is steaming and starting to bubble. Stir until the chips have melted and the icing is smooth. Dip the top of each doughnut in the icing and set on wire rack.
Note: Doughnuts will keep at room temperature for 2 days or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Warm in the microwave for 30 seconds at 50% power prior to serving.

Two New York City
Food Network Stars Talk Gastronomy By Roger Sands
Innovative chefs, culinary diversity, and patrons who expect nothing but the best all combine to make New York City a hotbed of gastronomic exploration. In a city that’s bursting at the seams with talented chefs, it takes a yeoman’s effort to stand out in the kitchen.
These two Food Network stars, each a highly respected restaurateur whose creativity knows no limits, have risen to the top of their profession. Fueled by a passion for food along with the tantalizing effect it has on people, they continue to create dishes that not only please the palate but often times break the mold in the process.
Donatella
Arpaia
Celebrity chef, TV personality, restaurateur, and cookbook author, Donatella Arpaia is best known for her role as head judge on Food Network’s “Iron Chef America” and “The Next Iron Chef.” She is also a regular contributor to NBC’s “The Today Show,” where she offers her culinary expertise and delectable recipes. As the child of first-generation Italian immigrants, Donatella fondly remembers spending her summers in Italy. These early years provided her with the foundation for her expertise in southern Italian cuisine. After a very brief career as an attorney, she decided to follow her passion and opened her first restaurant, Bellini, at the age of 26, which celebrated the Italian cuisine of her youth. Donatella furthered her expansion by teaming up with then unknown chef Michael Psilakis as they opened a string of highly acclaimed restaurants, such as Dona, Anthos, and Kefi in Manhattan, as well as Eos and Bistro E in Miami. In 2016, she debuted her first upscale quick service pizza concept, Prova Pizzabar, in Grand Central Station, where she is chef/ partner, and then opened her second location in the Moxy NYC Times Square Hotel.
How is the New York City food scene evolving?
Sadly, the city has become so expensive. It’s very hard for the single first-time chef or restaurateur to launch a concept, so the larger corporations and experienced chefs and restaurateurs are really the only ones that are opening spots.
Are there any new specialty dishes that people can expect to find on menus throughout the city this year? There are a lot more plant-based options with a focus on sustainability and locally-sourced food.
In such a saturated food market, is there still room for start-up restaurants in the city? Sadly, it has become more and more difficult with the high rents. It is more difficult now, but still not impossible.

Other than Manhattan, which boroughs are doing innovative things in the kitchen?
Brooklyn, Astoria, and Long Island City, where it’s more affordable
When you eat out, what is your favorite meal?
My first love is Italian food and it’s my passion, but when going out, I love to have Japanese, especially in New York City. I think New York City has the best Japanese restaurants.
Describe a favorite Food Network moment.
Oh boy, I have so many, but, I did love the battle with scotch on “Iron Chef America,” with co-judges David Burtka and his husband, Neil Patrick Harris. They were both so fun. DonatellaArpaia.com

In addition to his status as a judge on Food Network’s “Chopped” and as an Iron Chef, he also serves as a co-host on Food Network’s “The Kitchen.”
How is the New York City food scene evolving?
Well, it has never stopped evolving in the 40 years I have been here, and it will continue at a rapid pace, but it does seem to be headed in a healthy-ish, simpler, more focused horizon.
Are there any new specialty dishes that people can expect to find on menus throughout the city this year?
Vegetables are the new truffles. All are celebrated, from legumes to fresh from the market. New York City has really become a leader in marketdriven cuisine.
What are the latest food trends sweeping the city?
Small, focused, simple restaurants that are delivering very specific and delicious foods. These restaurants are not trying to be everything to everyone.
In such a saturated food market, is there still room for start-up restaurants in the city?
The suggestion that it’s saturated is something I personally don’t believe. It is always cycling through itself and getting better. I don’t believe it can ever get saturated in theory or reality.
Other than Manhattan, which local areas are doing innovative things in the kitchen? Brooklyn is on fire right now. So is Jersey City and New Jersey.
When you eat out, what is your favorite meal?
Whatever I am in the mood for, as long as it doesn’t take more than 60 minutes.
Describe a favorite Food Network moment.
There are so many, but we just reached our 200th episode on “The Kitchen.” It’s a very special show. GeoffreyZakarian.com

Bourke Street Bakery The famed Australian bakery opened its first international store in Manhattan in the summer of 2019, bringing New York customers a taste of the Outback. While plenty of savory items adorn the menu (and you shouldn’t miss out on these, especially the breads), their unique sweets have us salivating. Naturally, you can line up to try their lamington (a traditional Australian sponge cake) and tarts, but they’re also offering more American spins on their desserts with items like peanut butter and jelly croissants, maple-bacon danishes, and cinnamon buns. Muffins, cookies, cakes, and pies also adorn the menu here and have become quite popular. BourkeStreetBakery.com, 15 East 28th Street

The Saint Lucia-based plantation welcomes consumers to visit at the Boucon Hotel & Restaurant, but the NYC-based store proves that the brand lives up to its originiality promise. Made with the mantra, “More cocoa, less sugar,” Hotel Chocolat’s products always have cocoa as the main ingredient, never use any artificial ingredients, and feature exciting, bold flavors. Finding Your“Fit-fluence”
With Beachbody’s
AMOILA CESAR By Ashley Keegan
W
ith spring comes a season of renewal. This can be felt not just around us, but within us as well, making it the perfect time to check in with our bodies and reevaluate our health goals for the year. But, if your resolutions have fallen out of focus, how do you find the motivation to keep moving? We spoke with Amoila Cesar, Beachbody Super Trainer and creator of 6 Weeks of THE WORK, to uncover his expert tips on forging ahead when you’re feeling less-than-excited about your fitness progress. First and foremost, Amoila suggests finding a “fit-fluence”— someone who inspires you to tackle those early morning workouts, push yourself to beat your records, and ultimately become the best version of yourself, physically and mentally. He suggests picking someone with traits you admire and hope to emulate in yourself. “You might pick [your fit-fluence] because she is intelligent, because he practices a healthy quality of life, or simply because she’s creative or sporty,” Amoila recommends as a starting point. “Whatever your reasoning is, that person can be the most important person in your quest of selfimprovement.” Amoila urged that it’s also important to find your “why”—your main purpose on your path to improved health and wellness. Establishing a reason for attaining your goal can act as a driving force from the person you are to the person you want to become. If your goals don’t interest you, however, it can be difficult to stay committed. That’s why Amoila says it is essential to find workouts that resonate with you and keep you engaged. There’s no shame in admitting
96
when something is not working, and a mindful adjustment to your approach could be the exact game-changer you need. “There are days I skip the gym because I’m either mentally checked out or bored of the same routine,” Amoila admits. “When this happens, I switch up my training environment or training approach completely to keep me focused.” For Amoila, this realization came when he decided to alter his routine and go for a jog, but was disappointed when he didn’t reach his goal of running an 8-minute mile. Instead of giving up, he persisted and found a sense of accomplishment in his incremental daily improvements. Eventually, he reached his goal, and though it may have only been a mile, Amoila says, in that moment, it felt like he had won the Boston Marathon. From there, he fell in love with running, and it all started with shaking up his workouts on a whim. But what can you do when the universe seems to be working against your progress? It can be difficult to stay motivated when setbacks arise, but Amoila suggests practicing daily affirmations to keep a positive mindset on the path to your goals. “Focus on the good things, however small or big,” he encourages. “Find humor in bad situations, turn failures into lessons, transform negative selftalk into positive self-talk, and focus on the present.” Amoila‘s flexible approach makes it clear that ongoing motivation is key to achieving a healthy body and positive mindset. Stay focused and your progress and perseverance just might become the “fit-fluence” for someone else’s wellness journey down the road.

She’s Got Gut—and Brains:
A
How Wellness Entrepreneur Caroline Beckman is Reinventing the Probiotics Industry By Cathie Ericson
surprising number of women are all too familiar with the uncomfortable feeling that comes from painful gut issues. Entrepreneur Caroline Beckman was one who knew such problems acutely and decided to do something about it. That was the genesis for her company Nouri, whose first consumer product line of clinically supported proprietary probiotic blends launched nationally in retail stores and online in January 2020.
That omega oil is the basis for its unique delivery method: Nouri’s research shows that standard probiotic capsules on the market only deliver 1% or less of the probiotic. That’s because a probiotic is a living bacteria, and in order for it to reach its destination, it has to pass through the highly acidic stomach. Using a capsule-within-acapsule technology, the oil in the Nouri capsule protects the probiotic powder. Another distinction is the transparency and traceability of its ingredients, given that Nouri labels its products down to the strain level, rather than the more common practice of including only genus and species. Without including the strain, Caroline explains, “It’s like saying there’s a sedan in the parking lot, but not divulging the year, make, and model. Some strains are high-performance, while others are not as powerful. Consumers need to know what they’re buying.”
A FOCUS ON HEALTH AND WELLNESS Since the age of 18, Caroline has been involved in the health and wellness industry, beginning as a founding employee for Suja, a cold-pressed organic juice start-up that became one of the fastest-growing beverage companies in history. While she was a huge fan of the product itself, she realized she loved the excitement of helping grow the business just as much. “The intersection between business and advancing consumer health was my sweet spot. It was so empowering to do both,” she says. That early experience led to founding, advising, and investing in more than 10 food and beverage companies, and in 2018 Caroline founded her newest venture, Nouri, which she saw as an opportunity to develop better solutions for a pervasive issue “by my generation for my generation,” she explains. “Your gut houses 70% of your immune system so it’s foundational to your wellness,” she says. “As the cornerstone of health, you’re going to have a rough time if it’s not working, which is why women should be proactive.”
To Caroline, that transparency is the basis of building a trustworthy brand.
MAKING HER MARK AS A YOUNG BUSINESS LEADER NOURI’S LINE OF PROBIOTICS ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE AT DAILYNOURI.COM FOR $40 PER BOTTLE AND AT WHOLE FOODS STORES NATIONWIDE.
THE NOURI DIFFERENCE While probiotics, often called “good” bacteria because they help keep your gut healthy, is a thriving business, it was important to Caroline to differentiate her product. And that started with science, which she says only supports 35% of the market. By contrast, more than 25 clinical studies underscore the benefits of Nouri’s probiotics + plant-based omega oil combination. Daily Nouri
Starting one’s own business provides a crash course that not even an MBA can provide. Caroline’s top piece of advice for fellow entrepreneurs is to listen more than you speak. “Put yourself under wisdom and counsel from those who have gone before you, and stand on their shoulders,” she says. “I am not a scientist who’s worked on probiotics for 20 years, but I can listen to and learn from those who have.”
The best way to develop that super-charged network? Just ask, she says. “I’ve never been afraid to reach out to people. While it’s important not to be overly aggressive, people typically want to help. And then ask them who else you should learn from.” That ability to be open and inquisitive, coupled with her passion for the mission, has set Caroline and Nouri up for success. “Most women tend to take a reactive rather than proactive solution to gut health, and wait until they are already in pain to take a supplement,” she explains. Why not take control of your own health instead? With more than one billion people worldwide suffering from gut-related diseases, Caroline is proud to be part of the solution. DailyNouri 97

to sit on the other side of the curtain and watch people operate all day. He looked at me and said, ‘Aviva, you’re just going to have to get through this.’ I knew he was right. What drives you to get through is the passion for it and the example other people set—that’s why that passion rubs off.
For Dr. B. Aviva Preminger, a board-certified plastic surgeon on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the journey to becoming a surgeon was filled with influential people, starting right in her own home. Both her father and grandfather practiced medicine, which created a desire to follow in their footsteps.
Other medical professionals who were influential to me were Dr. Lloyd Gayle, a brilliant surgeon who taught me how to thread a stitch; Dr. Norman Morrison who mentored me through my early practice; and Dr. Spero Theodorou and Dr. Christopher Chia, two plastic surgeons who were tremendously supportive and allowed me to basically squat in their office when I was renovating mine.
“I’ve always seen myself as part of the healing process and I enjoyed taking care of people,” Dr. Preminger explains. “Those things have been a big part of why I chose to do what I do and were modeled by my father and grandfather before him.” BELLA met with Dr. Preminger to discuss the inspirational figures who have impacted her career, along with the way in which she is moving the specialty forward for aspiring surgeons.
Dr. Joseph Fins, a professor of medical ethics with the Cornell/Columbia residents at the time, was also a tremendous mentor for me in terms of ethical practice in medicine; it has always been a side interest of mine.
Can you recall the defining moment you knew you wanted to go into plastic surgery?
The first plastic surgery case I saw was watching a doctor by the name of Henry Spinelli. A 16-year-old boy had broken one of his facial bones playing soccer, and Dr. Spinelli did a bone graph using bone from the boy’s hip to reconstruct the face. I was amazed that he could do that. From that moment on, as a first-year med student, I was sold. The aesthetics of the human form have always fascinated me, so it was just a very natural fit.
You come from a family of doctors— your father is a urologist, and your grandfather was an internist and then a psychiatrist. How were they inspirational in your journey into medicine?
They both had a huge impact on me. My father always loved to operate. I always liked that you could fix something with your hands, and so does he. They loved their patients and being a doctor, and they loved taking care of people, which was a real example for me.
I really do have my dream job. It’s so powerful that as plastic surgeons we have the ability to mold, create, and shape with our hands in a very particular way. Particularly when it comes to the cosmetic aspects, we really make people feel good about themselves. Being able to do that is a powerful thing.
Your mother wasn’t a doctor but she worked in your father’s practice. How was she an influential force in your life?
My mother has been an interesting player in my life in the sense that she is a strong person, she has always worked, and she was a real role model in terms of a woman being able to juggle work and home life. She is also someone who has always pushed me to do my best.
As an established surgeon in your field, how are you inspiring the next generation?
My two grandmothers were also major influences in my life. My maternal grandmother was a concentration camp survivor who came to this country with literally nothing. My paternal grandmother, who narrowly escaped the war, was a very creative and artistic person, and I think I inherited my love of art and fashion from her.
Outside of family, who else played a role in helping you get to where you are today?
There are so many people who have inspired me in many different ways, in both medicine and plastic surgery, in particular. One of my early mentors was the former chief of plastic surgery at Weill Cornell Medical Center, Lloyd Hoffman. As a medical student doing my internship, I was working crazy hours, exhausted, and I tried to quit. I went to him and said, “I’m done. I don’t need to do surgery anymore.” He offered me an anesthesia residency, and I thought that was the greatest torture I could experience— B. Aviva Preminger, MD
College and medical students often reach out to work on research projects or shadow me in my office. I currently have a student who’s been with me for almost two years now. I also operate once a week with the Cornell/Columbia residents, which is really valuable to me because I’m teaching the next generation of plastic surgeons. For the past 20 years, I’ve also been interviewing high school kids applying to Harvard (my undergraduate alma mater). While it is time consuming, I meet these really special people and hopefully play a part in supporting them in the way I’ve been supported. It means a tremendous amount because so many people have been influential in my life and have taken the time to mentor me, so it’s important for me to give back.
How would you like these students—the ones who will follow in your footsteps—to remember you?
As a capable and caring surgeon not just in terms of the individual patient, but in terms of moving the specialty forward.

BREAST REDUCTION & LIFT By Dr. Aviva Preminger
“Enhancing your breasts can provide balance to your figure and greatly boost your self-confidence.” - Dr. Preminger Do you think your breasts are…Too small? Too large? Asymmetric? Do your breasts droop? Have you lost fullness? Some women have never been happy with the appearance of their breasts, while others have experienced significant changes over time. Whatever your concern, there is a solution. If you want to increase breast size and fullness, a breast augmentation may be the procedure for you. Three dimensional imaging can even help you visualize your result and find the breast size you desire. Some women have enough volume, but it’s all sitting in the lower part of the breasts causing sagging and drooping. This is particularly common after pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight loss. A breast lift may be the key to restoring fullness in all the right places. Breasts that are too large, however, can cause back and shoulder pain and interfere with exercise and weight loss. If that’s your issue, a breast reduction may be the solution. At your consultation, we will discover what you like and dislike about your breasts and create a customized surgical plan that will address all of your breast concerns, leaving you looking and feeling your best - a more confident, beautiful you!

The Spiritual: Attend Easter Mass in Rome
Travel can often be about mental stimulation or physical experience, but some journeys can be spiritually nurturing too. Why not travel to Rome, Italy, and experience the Easter Mass in Saint Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday (April 12, 2020) at 10 a.m. Regardless of your religious beliefs, it remains an iconic spiritual experience in a city rich in history. The mass requires tickets (which are free but ideally should be applied for in advance from the Prefecture of the Papal Household). Stay at one of the top hotels such as the St. Regis, Rome, which recently completed a $45 million renovation. Alternatively, consider Rocco Forte’s Hotel de Russie. Vatican.va

The ocean liner has some 15 restaurants and bars afloat along with a Canyon Ranch spa and gym, a planetarium, a near-10,000 book library, and of course, the famous White Star service ethic that will make every passenger feel like an extra in a “Downton Abbey” movie afloat. For the price of a high-end Business Class or First Class ticket on an airline, why not spend a week and adjust mentally and physically to a visit to the other side of the pond? Cunard.com

EXPERIENCE PALATABLE PLEASURES LIKE A LOCAL The Aruba Marriott instantly immerses guests into the culture and overall vibe of the Aruban lifestyle. I wanted to experience the many flavors of Aruba like the locals do, and the best way to do so was to learn from the locals themselves. The sophisticated style of the Grand Room Lobby Bar catches your eye upon entering and its intricate menu of bespoke blends will keep your attention. I had the pleasure of getting a hands-on lesson in Mixology 101 with the incredibly talented staff at Aruba Marriott. Of the cocktails I shook and stirred, the Hibiscus Margarita was as delicious as it was pretty. 110
HIBISCUS MARGARITA 1 oz Patrón Silver 1 oz Patrón Citrónge 0.5 oz Cointreau 1 oz lime juice 1 oz hibiscus syrup 1 candied hibiscus flower Rim a wine glass with hibiscus salt. In a shaker, add and shake all ingredients together (minus the candied hibiscus flower) with ice. Add new ice to the rimmed wine glass, and strain mixture from shaker into the glass. Decorate with candied hibiscus flower.
Next, move into La Vista, an open-air terrace with ocean views, featuring local dishes and international favorites. Here, you can book your very own cooking class with the incredibly talented Chef Ever. During my class, Chef Ever taught us how to create a local dish called Pastechi, similar to an empanada and loaded with flavor. Pastechi can be customized to your liking, with ingredients ranging from ham and cheese to a vegetable medley. These delicious, golden brown pockets are easy enough to whip up in your very own kitchen and can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
INDULGE IN THE CARIBBEAN SAND AND SEAS
If you’re looking to indulge your senses both culinarily and visually in Aruba, the stunning Atardi is a must-do. A nightly pop-up on the beach, Atardi is illuminated by cotton candy skies and citrus sunsets, making the setting just as appealing as the food. Serving up succulent seafood and a romantic ambiance, Atardi is a refined yet relaxing fine dining experience with the most dazzling views. If you’re looking for a fresh, flavorful dish that won’t disappoint, try the Macadamia Crusted Grouper or the Sea Bass in Champagne Sauce–both incredible!
When your palette is satiated and you’re ready to escape to the shimmering seas, set sail upon the crystal clear, cerulean blue waters of Aruba. Thanks to Red Sail Sports, you can experience the most the Caribbean seas have to offer with catamaran cruises complete with snorkeling and diving. Their luxury fleet of catamarans will whisk you away to some of the most coveted snorkel spots, where you can peruse a shipwreck and swim with Aruban marine life. Red Sail offers both sunset and dinner cruises, with full buffet and open bar, for an unforgettable excursion through the Caribbean.
RETURN TO THE LAND FOR TRUE FARM-TO-TABLE
KESHI YENA Eggplant Seasoning (poultry, salt + pepper) Onion Garlic Shallots Olives Raisins Orange juice Sage And, of course–as much gouda cheese as your heart desires!
Keshi Yena can be prepared in many different ways and with different ingredients— there are even meatless options. We opted for a vegetarian version, where the filling is cooked up and poured into a small baking dish, lined with thinly sliced eggplant. The mixture is then topped with cheese and fired in the oven. For more recipes like this, and for your very own “back to the land” experience, contact Goshen Farms.
For a truly unique glimpse into the island’s culture, I recommend venturing off-resort and exploring the famous Goshen Farms for a day. I was surprised to learn that Aruba boasts much more than pristine beaches and tropical landscapes; it also fosters vast deserts and fruitful farmland. Goshen Farms began as a way to connect people to local foods and the Aruban cultural heritage. Teaching the value of the land and the sustainability of fresh produce, Goshen offers a true “farm-to-table” cooking experience for its visitors. Set alongside a beautiful, country estate, Goshen’s tour and cooking class teaches classic Aruban dishes made in their authentic stone-brick oven, where you’ll enjoy their famous, green “Goshen Smoothie” upon arrival. Here, our tour guide and resident chef taught us how to whip up Keshi Yena, a traditional dish of fresh farm vegetables and the authentic char of the stone-brick oven. The hospitality at Goshen was unmatched, and our day was completed enjoying our chefs-d’oeuvre farm side, overlooking another spectacular Aruban sunset. ArubaMarriott ArubaMarriott

EXPERIENCE a
MEMORABLE ONE By Vanessa Coppes
Describe Los Angeles, in just a few words? Impossible. Ever since my oldest son turned 2, he would talk about LA with such certainty. And every time we would attempt to go as a family, the trip always seemed complicated. I had personally never been to LA but had promised Tomás that my first time would be with him. Not only was that promise kept, we spent the most amazing week sharing experiences together, tasting new foods, and of course, shooting BELLA’s Influencer Issue cover with the gorgeous Marisol Nichols. Travel is one of the greatest gifts you can give your children and yourself. Travel influences our worldview, opens our minds to cultural differences and similarities, and above all connects us to others. Living in New Jersey and working in New York, I learned that the pace of La La Land is all its own. What an amazing time we had making memories that will last a lifetime! The next time I visit I am bringing my youngest son, who will join me on his first red carpet as we celebrate this issue and all of our new Cali friends.
HIKE
Hike the Hollywood Sign. Jen and her dog, Ziggy, host
a sunset-to-night hike/walk above the Hollywood Sign via AirBnB Experiences. Jen reveals that every night is an adventure. Tomás and I experienced that firsthand, and although we couldn’t move the next day, the people we met and the stories Jen told will live with us forever. And that Hollywood sign sight—definitely one for the stars! @HikeTheHollywoodSign
EAT
Umami Burger. Since 2009,
Umami Burger has been serving up some seriously delicious bites, earning it a star among Los Angeles’ best restaurant lists and topping the nation’s best burger lists. Since San Francisco, Chicago, and New York have been Umamified, they expanded from their flagship LA restaurant to Japan, Mexico, and the Bahamas. We ate it all—the fries, the burgers—drank the shakes, of course, and then topped it off with the infamous UFO: a tempura-fried chocolatefilled oatmeal cookie topped with dulce de leche, chocolate sauce, and vanilla ice cream. Go try it…you’re welcome! UmamiBurger.com

From the moment we checked in, we experienced its unique mix of French fashion infused with Hollywood glamour. Sofitel-Los-Angeles.com

Another bonus: W’s signature cocktails! Marriott.com/W_Hotels/Book_Now Canyon Ranch Woodside. Canyon Ranch
Wellness Retreat – Woodside is the brand’s newest wellness extension. It opened its doors on November 12, 2019. Formerly Skylonda Lodge, the 16-acre retreat property was redesigned by Cole Martinez Curtis & Associates to embrace the surrounding natural beauty and create connectivity with the outdoors throughout each space. This haven is perfect for wellness seekers with community-driven, introspective, and nature-infused experiences focused on rejuvenation and restoration. Thoughtfully curated programming and rituals are also designed to help guests feel physically energized, emotionally connected, and mentally focused, with downtime for furthering intentions. This was truly an immersive experience. I was able to practice Tai Chi, and while reflecting on my downtime was inspired to work on the launch of BELLA Latina, BELLA’s newest extension for the Latina community. CanyonRanch.com/Woodside 114

THE GALA: SAVE VENICE’S BYZANTINE BALL Springtime is gala season in New York City, and one of the most pristine galas is Save Venice’s Byzantine Ball. Along with the Young Friends Steering Committee of Save Venice, philanthropist and activist Lizzie Asher will lead the event. Proceeds from the Byzantine Ball will support many of Save Venice’s missions, including the conservation of Byzantine mosaics in the church of Santa Maria Assunta, Torcello. Founded in response to the floods of 1966 (the worst in recorded history) and incorporated in 1971, Save Venice has since worked tirelessly to preserve, protect, and promote the art and culture of Venice and has funded the conservation of more than 550 projects comprising over 1,000 individual artworks.
