DIESEL’S
DENIM LEGACY By Jonathan Calixto
From festivals like Coachella to trendy socialites like Tana Mongeau and James Charles, denim has made its way back into our fashion radar. A brand that is no stranger to denim and is revolutionizing it since 1978 is Diesel. Just like the trend keeps making a comeback with a new twist, Diesel has taken a fabric that’s at the core of the brand’s heritage and identity and re-worked to keep it innovative, evolutionary, and relevant over the years. The brand first introduced Diesel Rehab Denim as part of the FW22 runway, and a more comprehensive collection was launched for pre-Spring 2023. Partnering with sustainability specialist, Tejidos Royo, Diesel Rehab Denim represents the company’s most significant achievement to date in terms of sustainability. The new approach 100% recycled cotton and elastane from pre-consumer waste blended with Tencel ™ Lyocell with REFIBRA technology. In addition, Dry Indigo® Technology, an innovative technique with zero water consumption, drastically reduces the amount of chemicals and energy used in the denim dying process. As Diesel continues to evolve, this is the most effective sustainable practice yet in their denim legacy.

Celebrity-Backed
Beverage Brands Worth the Money By Amanda Mactas
These days celebrities seem to be getting their hands into every business enterprise possible—from celebrity beauty brands to wellness companies, and of course, beverages. Diddy and George Clooney are pioneers, having both hopped on the booze bandwagon in the late 2000s. But now it seems every Tom, Dick, and Nancy is promoting their own liquor or wine on social media. So, which of these many, many beverages are actually worth buying at your local liquor store? We’ll help you out.
Flecha Azul Tequila Brought to you by first-generation Mexican-American PGA golfer Abraham Ancer and Mexican-born Aron Marquez, this single estate-grown, ultra-premium, and additive-free tequila can actually say it has authentic Mexican roots. Familiar face Mark Wahlberg joined the team in 2022, simply because he believed in the product. The tequila is made using 100% blue agave and is currently available in five different varietals—blanco, reposado, añejo, cristalino, and extra añejo. FlechaAzulTequila.com, $44.99-$319.99
Sweetens Cove Founded in 2019 by athletes Peyton Manning, Andy Roddick, and real estate developer Mark Rivers, Sweetens Cove currently produces three bourbons that have all been well-received. Its Kennessee blends Kentucky and Tennessee bourbon whiskies that have been finished with toasted sugar maple wood; the 21 Release is a blend of four-, six-, and 16year aged Tennessee bourbons; and finally, their 22 Release blends five-, six-, eight-, and 10-year aged Tennessee bourbons. The trio works with Master Blender Marianne Eaves to churn out these pricy, yet tasty, expressions. SweetensCoveSpirits.com, $93-$243
You wouldn’t necessarily think that Post Malone and rosé would be a match made in heaven, but turns out, they are quite a perfect pair. The famous rapper worked hand in hand with winemaker Alexis Cornu to produce this Provencal rosé, which strikes the proper balance between dry and sweet. It has subtle notes of peach and makes for some dangerously easy drinking. Maison9Wine.com, $21.99
Aviation Gin We’d be remiss not to include one of the best-marketed celeb bev brands on this list—especially since it deserves a coveted spot as one of the most drinkable of the bunch. Ryan Reynolds famously teamed up with Aviation Gin in 2018 and did what he does best—made us laugh. His comedic commercials put this botanical gin on the map, and consumers can enjoy hints of juniper, lavender, orange, and cinnamon in this sipper. AviationGin.com, $29.99

PROSECCO DOC By Jennifer DeCillis Summer wouldn’t be complete without a sip of the renowned Italian drink born by mistake in 1972, the Negroni Sbagliato. Instead of using gin, as the Negroni should be, the vermouth and the Campari base are topped by a sparkling wine, and what better choice than PROSECCO DOC? Produced in Italy, in the enchanting land between the Dolomite Mountains and the Adriatic Sea, this lively sparkling wine comes to life from Glera grapes vinified through the Charmat Method (or Martinotti Method), where secondary fermentation takes place in tanks. Prosecco DOC is appreciated for its crisp acidity and refreshing taste, making it the ideal companion for your favorite summer cocktail and the perfect ingredient to elevate any party. Try Valdo Marca Oro Brut Prosecco DOC, exquisitely delicate and versatile; with its fine perlage, well-balanced structure, and enticing fruit flavors, it offers a bright and fresh alternative to your Negroni Sbagliato. Alternatively, opt for Zardetto Prosecco DOC Brut, bringing a round and fresh taste to your favorite summer cocktail thanks to its delightful notes of lemon tart and white pear. For a refined choice, look no further than La Marca Prosecco DOC Extra Dry. This enchanting Prosecco DOC offers an explosion of elegance, harmonizing notes of lime, lemon zest, and white peach with a subtle hint of minerality. The light and refreshing finish is also complemented by a touch of sweetness.

Lastly, to truly pay homage to the Negroni Sbagliato and embrace the essence of the Italian Dolce Vita style, feature Brilla! Prosecco DOC. This sparkling gem is a true work of art, with its lively bubbles that bring vibrancy and freshness to every sip. Its delicate and complex bouquet, along with its vivacious and light body, will captivate your senses.
Negroni Sbagliato (with a summer twist!) By Alessandro Palazzi
Ingredients: 30 ml Red Vermouth 30 ml Campari 40 ML PROSECCO DOC Orange zest Ice cubes
This drink can be prepared directly in the glass. Alessandro Palazzi, renowned Italian bartender and head of the Duke’s bar in London who collaborated with Prosecco DOC for this recipe, suggests to always cool the glass beforehand with lots of ice. This will keep your drink cool and prevent the ice from melting too quickly and diluting the drink. Discard the initial ice. Directions: Pour sequentially the vermouth and the Campari in the glass. Now add fresh ice cubes to the glass. Top up with the Prosecco DOC brut and gently stir the drink (stir once only to avoid losing bubbles). To garnish, the Maestro suggests using the zest of the orange rather than the traditional slice. All the aromatic essential oils of the fruit are in the zest, we should use those to elevate the drink. Take a whole peel with the help of a potato peeler, get close to the glass edge and ‘squeeze it’ on its top; you can actually see the oils be released onto the glass rim. Now gently brush the rim with the peel and place it into the drink. This ritual is an essential step to make great cocktails.
Enjoy!
Spaghetti Squash
Low Carb-onara
By Lori-Ann Marchese, Body Construct, LLC
As much as we love regular pasta, it does contain a high carb count, which is why I use spaghetti squash instead. It works well with almost any sauce, and one of my favorites is carbonara style, substituting low-sodium turkey bacon for pancetta. With some minor food replacements to healthier choices, you are well on your way to a healthier you.
Ingredients Serves 6 1 large spaghetti squash 1 tbsp olive oil 3/4 cup turkey bacon 4 cloves of garlic (minced) 1 cup green peas 1 large egg 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese Sea Sea salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Using a sharp knife, slice the spaghetti squash in half, length-wise. Remove seeds and place onto a baking sheet, cut side down. 2. Bake 40-45 minutes or until fork can easily pierce through. 3. In a large pan, heat olive oil on medium-high setting. Add turkey bacon and garlic, sautée until bacon is sizzling (about 3 minutes). 4. Add peas and cook 3-5 minutes. Remove from heat. 5. In medium-size bowl, whisk, egg, heavy cream, and parmesan cheese. 6. When spaghetti squash is done baking, use a fork to pull out noodle strands. While squash is still hot, add creamy mixture into the large pan with bacon and peas. 7. Add sea salt and black pepper to taste. Garnish with fresh parsley.
Enjoy your healthy pasta with a side salad with olive oil and vinegar and a dash of sea salt.

Jewelry Line Inspired by Friendship and Creative Collaboration: Dune Jewelry Launches New Collection with Model Camille Kostek By Jennifer DeCillis Experiential jewelry brand, Dune Jewelry, prides itself on collaborating with women across various industries, including fashion, beauty, and wellness. Author, Founder, and CEO Holly Daniels Christensen is the woman-supporting-women behind it all and is excited to announce a continued, creative collaboration with a dear friend and colleague, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model, Camille Kostek. Expanding their original collection, Holly and Camille are introducing 13 new and unique designs in both silver and gold. Launching in August 2023, the collection is earthy, yet mystical, incorporating a mix of aquamarine, moonstone, and white topaz. BELLA spoke to Holly about her mission to support other women, the new collection, and what we can expect to see from the fashion and accessories dynamo.
Throughout your career, you have always made it a point to collaborate with other women, supporting their businesses, platforms, and passions. Why is that so important to you? If we don’t support each other, who’s going to do it? There are so many talented women out there with great ideas and great work ethic, and I love the passion that these women who have come into my life have. It’s so important to me to give them a platform to express themselves artistically and give opportunity where it’s deserved. We have always had such powerful women in our corner, and it’s been wonderful. You are now back to working with a great friend and SI Swimsuit model, Camille Kostek. What first drew you to Camille for a collaboration and how has your relationship grown over time? I hired Camille as our first ever professional model in 2016. Prior to that, we were using friends and family members for our shoots. Even though her portfolio wasn’t as fully developed at that time as it is today, I loved her personality that shone through. She’s such a bright, positive light and you feel it when she walks into the room. She also has such a creative side, which makes designing jewelry so easy. Camille has such a great sense of self, there’s no gray area. When she sees a piece, she knows if she likes it instantly and we can come to a decision effectively. She has a divine sense of style and self. We dropped our first collection in 2018 and continued collaborating through 2020. This is now our fourth drop and it will be the best yet. Dune Jewelry has such an effortless, summer feel to it, and Camille is no stranger to a beach or a swimsuit… does this play into the inspiration for the pieces in this new collection? For sure, the new collection has fresh summer vibes, but I’d say it’s more of a year-round type of collection. It’s a spiritual collection, made with raw materials and raw stones—moonstones, aquamarine—such a beautiful assortment. I see people wearing it all summer and all year long to keep them feeling focused and beautiful. Will there also be customizations available utilizing your expansive Sandbank with over 5,000 elements from across the globe? Yes, yes, and yes! We love the raw stones and how they complement the sand and earth elements from our Sandbank. But the majority of the collection is made with the raw stones, which really speak to Camille. You’ll always see her wearing raw stones, mixed with other earth elements like crushed shells from Hawaii or sand from Australia, where she shot her first Sports illustrated Swimsuit cover. What is the creative process like for you both? How closely do you work together to bring your visions to life? Both of our schedules are so hectic that we sometimes design on the fly. She will voice her ideas and I’ll source a bunch of stones—Camille is very visual—then, we’ll meet at her home to review and as soon as she sees the stones and silhouettes and raw sketches, she knows exactly how to put it together. We work very closely on all the designs. I would say it’s a pretty seamless process between the two of us because we have been working together now for so many years. You and Camille both believe in visualizing and manifesting your goals. How has this belief and technique tied into the designs and the overall feel of the collection? I think we both really believe in speaking things into existence and talking about our goals as if they’ve already happened. This collection feels very spiritual and celestial to me. The raw aquamarine also gives it a very earthy vibe—reminiscent of the water in Iceland or the glaciers in Alaska. The icy blue is also Camille’s favorite color. Is there anything else exciting you can share about the launch – dates, events, etc.? In addition to a meet and greet with Camille that we are hosting this July at our Dune Jewelry store in Harwich Port, we are also doing a whole month of Camille in August—the “Month of Camille” [laughs]. So, we will be launching all the new designs exclusively on our website throughout the month of August, along with all new Camille content. Summer Sculpting with Dr. Bushra Helmandi of Beauty and Body Aesthetics By Jennifer DeCillis

Some are using these treatments in conjunction with active lifestyles and daily workouts for an enhanced effect. With no downtime and no change in daily activity, these treatments are gaining wide popularity. People can pop into the office during their lunch break essentially and walk out 45 minutes later with a complete treatment —and return to work.
They say summer bodies are made in the winter…not anymore, thanks to innovative body contouring technology. At Beauty and Body Aesthetics located in midtown Manhattan, summer bodies can continue to be made, contoured, and perfected year-round. Beauty and Body’s founder, Dr. Bushra Helmandi, is proud to introduce the TruSculpt iD and Trusculpt Flex devices, used for exactly that.
“It seems that most people are opting for noninvasive treatments for body contouring and shying away from going under the knife due the risk of post-op complications and recovery time,” says Dr. Bushra. “Some are using these treatments in conjunction with active lifestyles and daily workouts for an enhanced effect.”

TruSculpt iD is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment for removing unwanted fat that will keep the fat off without an intense diet and workout plan. The procedure uses radiofrequency energy to heat pockets of excess fat cells until they’re damaged. The body evacuates them out over the next few weeks through your lymphatic system. The heat also provides skin-tightening benefits, as well as improvement in the appearance of cellulite. This device can be used to treat several of the typical “problem areas,” including the bra area, neck, love handles, buttocks, and thighs.
TruSculpt flex is a non-surgical muscle toning and strengthening system that uses electrical muscle stimulation to trigger deep muscle contractions at high intensity. Muscle contouring is fast becoming one of the most popular aesthetic treatments for women and men. This FDA-approved muscle toning and sculpting treatment for the thighs, buttocks, and abdomen has proven to deliver up to 30% increase in muscle mass. Utilizing these treatments together, known as Trubody, they combat stubborn fat pockets for an average of 24% fat reduction and then stimulate muscles to contract at a rate of 20 contractions per second or up to 54,000 abdominal crunches per treatment.

How to Use Summer to Cope with Winter By Dr. Julie Davelman
When many people think of the winter, the only word that comes to mind is “dread.” This sense of dread is reflected in their mood, in their inactivity, and in the start of unhealthy lifestyle choices. For those people, each winter day is spent counting down days until winter’s end and the glorious beginning of spring, or even better summer. These people plunge into the warm weather with the fervor that makes it seem like they believe that if they show summer just how much they enjoy it, it won’t leave. They believe that all the negativity they have been experiencing will now go away and they will no longer have to deal with it. Alas, inevitably winter comes back and the cycle repeats. But what if there was a way to use the summer months to not only enjoy the warmth but also to plan for the winter, thereby lessening the impact the cold season has on them? For many people for whom the workday involves sitting in front of a computer, the season actually has little impact on most days. But this assumes that the daily routine cannot be altered, which in many instances isn’t true. The element that impacts people’s mood in the winter is the lack of exposure to sunlight, so why not try to bank as much of it as possible during the summer months? For example, instead of drinking your morning coffee at the kitchen table as you always do, take your coffee outside. Or, if your favorite break activity during the day is scrolling through social media, that can be done outside too. Although all these small things may not seem like much, they likely add up to many more hours in the sun over the course of the summer, and only at the price of small tweaks to the daily routine. So, figure out what you love about summer most and do as much of it as possible even if you have to do it in tiny amounts. Since maximizing the enjoyment of summer takes time, additional time can be created by moving pleasurable activities that can be done during any season to the winter. For example, let’s say you really enjoy going to the theater—unless it’s a limited time performance, you can save this outing for the winter, so that you have things to look forward to. Similarly, if there is a new restaurant you have been dying to try, hold off on going until the sun is not out anymore and you need something to brighten up your day. Instead, using the advice from above, pack a picnic basket and go have lunch in the park, something you will not be able to do when winter comes back. Because the last thing many people want to do when it is cold out is move, often unhealthy habits can creep in. For instance, it is not hard to imagine thinking “Today is too cold for me to get out and go to the gym. I’ll just stay right here on the couch where it’s warm.” Similar feelings often affect our eating patterns. In the winter, when there is less to do, some people begin to overeat out of boredom. Others develop this same problem due to emotional eating because they are feeling sad. Thus, the summer can become the time to get back on track with healthy lifestyle choices. However, to avoid repeating the cycle, it is important to consider what you will be willing to do in the winter, so that it can be implemented all year around. For example, if you quit going to the gym every November for the last three years and then jointed again in June, it is probably not worthwhile to join the gym again. Instead, it may be a good idea to explore exercises you can do at home or start doing something like yoga, which can be done in a class when you feel like going out and at home when you don’t. The main idea is to think about what will be plausible in the winter and then start it in the summer. Winter can be hard for some people, but it can be made easier by some forward-thinking and active planning that can be done in the summer. By keeping an eye on what comes next, you may be able to make the dreaded cold more tolerable.

It’s Time to Ride… I n d o o r s By Jennifer Walsh We love the warm long days of summer, especially in the Hamptons, that tony area of beach communities clustered together on the eastern end of Long Island, NY. It’s where many New York City residents spend the better part of the beautiful summer months. This summer the Hamptons has become even more exciting for the fitness enthusiasts thanks to Soul Cycle’s brand-new studio— their largest to date. The “BARN,” a massive 2,200-square-foot multi-level and multi-use space, has Soul Cycle partnered with brands such as FORWARD__Space, Good Day Pilates, Tremble Pilates, Sakara Life, and Nutridrip to offer unique, one-of-a-kind experiences all under one roof. Throughout the summer, the BARN will also host fitness and wellness pop-ups from Stephanie Gottlieb, FP Movement, Jocelyn, Sunflow, and By My Grace, amongst others, in addition to having a carefully curated selection of rotating retail activations. If you’ve not yet experienced a Soul Cycle class, now is the perfect time to do so. There is so much to love about the brand, most notably its instructors. They are motivating, inspiring, and they make you want to work hard. Second, the music is great. The instructors play a mix of upbeat songs and dance beats that get you pumped to tackle the rest of the day. Third, the atmosphere is electric. The studio is always full of energy, and it's a great place to let loose and have fun. In addition to being a great workout, Soul Cycle classes are also a great way to make new friends. The Hamptons is a very social place, and Soul Cycle classes offer an instant connection to fellow health enthusiasts. Whether you choose to work out, shop, or experience one of its many wellness offerings, the BARN will undoubtedly be the place to have a great, healthy experience this summer.

The Travel Test:
Can Your Relationship Survive? By Jarrod Thalheimer
What if there was a test to find out whether your relationship has what it takes? Would you take it? It would be kind of silly not to, especially if doing so could save you a ton of future pain. Thankfully, just such a test exists and it’s available to every couple, anywhere in the world—take a short trip together! Travel, as it happens, is a microcosm of life. The stresses endured, situations faced, and responses offered provide a near-perfect laboratory to provoke and observe the absolute best and worst in a person. Still not sure? Have a look at these examples and tell me I’m wrong.
The Endless Day
The Chaos of Confusion
What happens when all normal distractions are erased? No job to rush off to, no appointments to keep, no dinners to make. Just raw, unscheduled, available time. How do they react? Do they rush to fill the void with activity, or do they flop onto a couch and binge watch movies? Regular life offers a ton of ways to hide such behaviors, but a weekend away allows insight into what someone might be like if they ever lost their job, or had their day-to-day life interrupted in any significant way. Watching how someone handles “free time” lets you know if they really are someone you can face an uncertain future with…or not.
It’s rare to get lost in your everyday life. Most of us keep to established paths and places, meaning we almost always know where we are. But on vacation? The chance for a navigational misstep is infinitely higher—and that’s a very good thing. Getting lost reveals much about how someone handles sudden uncertainty and how effectively they cope with fear and confusion. This offers a direct insight into how someone might confront the many difficult (and unplanned) situations bound to crop up further down the road. Do they calmly backtrack to what they know, asking for help, or do they just start to twitch and cry uncontrollably? Whatever they do, you have been warned. Act accordingly.
The Screw-up Early dating is a masterclass in manufactured perfection. Men and women spend lots of time making sure any time out together is flawless in execution— right down to laying out fancy underwear “just in case.” Travel, however, is a wild card. Screw-ups always happen—and usually at the worst possible moment. The rental car runs out of gas, the airline loses your luggage, the navigation takes you the wrong way. Trips away are ripe for mess-ups, which is the best time to look for clues. How do they handle problems? Do they freak out? Are they calm and collected? Make your mental notes. You’ll be glad you did.
The Crappy Hotel Room Early daters work hard to hide personal craziness from those they are attracted to…and no wonder. Who uses first dates to casually explain why they can’t sleep without wool socks stuffed full of foot cream or admits an obsession with the grout in bathroom tile being clean enough to eat off? No one, because we would think they are weird, which is exactly the kind of intel someone weighing the long-term potential of a relationship needs. Say hello to the crappy hotel room. Finding oneself stuck in a room with all manner of faulty imperfection will encourage even the most deeply hidden truths to pop above the surface. From insect fears, odd sleep tics, bizarre bathroom needs, OCD packing rituals, and more, all time spent in a lessthan-perfect accommodations reveals volumes about the people attempting to endure it. Pay attention. 48
The Sudden Illness Absolutely nothing reveals more about someone than how they handle getting sick. The random nature of travel almost guarantees an illness of some kind, especially when you factor in exotic foods, lots of strangers, and passage through germ factories like airports, taxis, and tourist traps. On a trip there is nowhere to hide. That means you get a front-row seat to the most honest version of the person you’re dating… ever. Do they act like a wounded animal that only wants to be left alone, or do they become a whining, cloying baby who demands someone wait on them hand and foot? Being sick reveals all, which means you will learn very quickly how much you truly enjoy being with them. Thanks, travel!
ZEN
in Love By Jonathan Calixto
Koshin Paley Ellison and Chodo Robert Campbell are co-founders and guiding teachers at the New York Zen Center. With 17 years in business, the center has become a safe haven for people seeking care, education, and practice in Zen work. Koshin and Chodo have become an influential voice not only in Buddhism but also in the Queer community. In addition to serving as the center’s founders, they are also married Zen monks.
Photography: @SidewalkKilla
While Koshin and Chodo found Buddhism differently, their paths once crossed 28 years ago. “It was more than love at first sight,” recalls Koshin. “I felt like my life must change and I knew this person would be a huge part of it.” What they didn’t expect is that after seeing each other for the first time at a Zen Buddhist Center, their paths wouldn’t cross again until six years later. That’s when Koshin began to volunteer at a hospice where Chodo was taking care of his grandmother. After spending time together, Chodo finally introduced Koshin to his grandmother and he remembers she told him, “I understand—he’s the one.” Koshin and Chodo felt it was always important to be themselves and live openly gay, even when being Queer was seen negatively and compounded by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Over the years, they have encountered supporters but also others who still see their lifestyle as a “new thing.” As Chodo recounts, “it is not to say there aren’t other gay priests or teachers, but we were openly gay, out, and married.” Someone who has inspired them in their work and whom they consider a pioneer is Issan Dorsey, an openly gay priest and teacher. Most recently, Koshin wrote the forward for Dorsey’s re-published book, “Street Zen,” which includes Koshin and Chodo’s love story. At the New York Zen Center, Koshin and Chodo have created special offerings for the LGBTQ+ community. Chodo shares how a recent bereavement group for Queer individuals impacted him because for many, it was the first time they could grieve the death of their partners or loved ones with people who could understand exactly how they felt. Koshin also shares how they continue to break old generation ideas within Buddhism from their interactions with priests that teach newer generations. “They understand that the teachings of liberation, which is actually what Zen Buddhism is about—it’s all-inclusive.” Koshin’s grandmother once told them, “The two of you can be fearless in the midst of fear and comfortable in the midst of discomfort, and I want you to create something where you teach people about Zen and how to really care in a fearless way.” What was once words are now actions Koshin and Chodo practice every day.

“The Red Flags I've (Repeatedly) Ignored” by Brianna McCabe | Inspired Girl Introspections Have you ever seen a proverbial “red flag” pop up in your life, but rather than run away from it, you’ve run right toward it? Brianna McCabe, professor and host of "The Red Room" podcast, feels your pain. She ignored her gut during much of her drama-packed 20s, which were a learning experience, to say the least. Rather than keep that wealth of knowledge to herself, she’s sharing it in this book that’s part self-help, part autobiography(ish). She shares with readers the missteps that led to heartache, but more importantly, how she learned to heal and trust herself. Consider it the inspirational book you need to channel your own inner strength.
Brianna told BELLA: "For so long, I allowed those darker stories in my life to anchor me down. I was terrified to admit that I've made mistakes, traveled down paths I shouldn't have, and made decisions that, looking back on now, I now know better than to have put myself in those situations. I've hurt myself and others in the past, and it would genuinely haunt me at times. "But here's the thing: By not only acknowledging these stories but openly sharing them with others in my book and on my podcast, I've taken accountability. I've learned to grow, and most importantly, I've learned to heal. In a sense, I truly think I've been able to tap into this power that is me, and I finally feel free. And the thing is, I think we all have the ability to reach this level of power and liberation." 36
App Recommendation There are so many film and TV adaptations of our favorite books coming out, and we’re finding it hard to keep track of where they’re landing on streaming services. That’s why we love JustWatch (JustWatch.com), which also has an app. Plug in a title and it will tell you which service(s) will be showing those movies and series. Enjoy!

Celebrating Black Philanthropy Month By Yolanda F. Johnson
For roughly the past decade or so, different cultural groups have begun to shift their thinking regarding the true meaning of philanthropy. For most of its existence, American philanthropy has been defined as the very wealthy giving to certain charities and naming programs, buildings, and playgrounds after themselves and their families. However, the philanthropic landscape is undergoing a seismic, redefining shift and is being deconstructed and rebuilt as something more beautiful and inclusive. Simply put: The face of philanthropy is changing, and people of varying backgrounds are beginning to understand that community, family support, tithing, and church support, as well as the giving of time, talent, truth, and treasure count equally as philanthropy. This is why it is so exciting to celebrate Black Philanthropy Month (BPM) each August. Black Philanthropy Month, today a program of The WISE Fund - Women Invested to Save Earth culminating in a multinational summit every August, is a global celebration to elevate Africandescent giving and funding equity. Incubated in 2001 by its founder, Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland, with the support of Reunity (formerly the PanAfrican Women's Philanthropy Network), BPM launched its first official global summit in 2011 to commemorate the United Nations Year and Decade of People of African Descent. Each year, Black Philanthropy Month has a given theme. For 2023, it is “Love in Action.” The beauty of this giving-back celebration is that it’s not just about one particular group of people who identify as Black, it’s about everyone who is of African descent all over the world—all those whose ancestry stems from the diaspora. It is a unifying way to see things differently and recognize the contributions that Black philanthropists, from affluent and notable celebrities to your local schoolteacher who is changing the lives of young people every day by using their own money to purchase materials to supplement his or her educational plans. S tay tuned to the official launch of Black Philanthropy Month on August 1st, which kicks off year-round initiatives, such as the Global Black Funding Equity. (See bit.ly/BPMPledge to sign the equity pledge and http://bit.ly/3xBitdy to take the funding equity survey and nominate an exemplary equitable funder for your country or continent.) Or start your own activity, event, or project as we encourage you to find your own unique way of participating and sharing with the broader BPM community. 53

BELLA Goes Country (Literally) in Franklin, Tennessee
56
By Vanessa Coppes + Team BELLA
Photography: Michelle Behre @MichelleBehrePhotography
Franklin, Tennessee is a charming and historic town located just 20 miles south of Nashville. This small, quaint town is filled with attractions for visitors to enjoy, from its rich cultural heritage to its vibrant arts and music scene. If you are looking to experience some southern charm and take a break from the fast-paced hustle and bustle of big-city life, then Franklin is definitely worth a visit. The team and I got to experience Franklin’s charm, its people and a few must-visit spots. Join us… Enjoy One of Franklin’s must-visit attractions is Landmark Booksellers. After visiting the shop in 2012, Franklin resident Karen Kingsbury was inspired to write her New York Times bestselling book, “The Bridge,” a heartwarming, inspirational story based on the bookstore and the husband and wife who own it. Joel and Carol Tomlin have deep roots in Franklin and Williamson County that date back to 1802, and their shared interest in books and reading led to the creation of this book lover’s paradise. Joel and Carol got married 25 years ago and combined their families, promising each other they would find a vocation they both could enjoy together once the youngest child graduated from school. That promise led to the opening of Landmark Booksellers in July 2005. Today, the couple considers themselves blessed to be able to share their love of books with each other and their customers every day at Landmark Booksellers, which they deem the most wonderful place in the world. Stay The Harpeth Hotel, a luxurious boutique hotel situated just a block away from the historic Franklin Square, is surrounded by picturesque scenery of the Cumberland River and lush greenery of the local surroundings. It offers 119 beautifully designed guest rooms, each with modern amenities and luxurious bedding. The rooms boast a classic blend of Southern hospitality with modern-day conveniences, such as high-speed Internet, flat-screen TVs, and plush beds. The hotel also features a range of upscale facilities, including a rooftop lounge, outdoor pool with cabanas, a fitness center, and spa services. The hotel's signature restaurant, 1799 Kitchen and Cocktails, is a nod to the town's rich history and offers a contemporary twist on traditional Southern cuisine. Overall, the Harpeth Hotel in Franklin, Tennessee, offers a luxurious haven that’s perfect for both business and leisure travelers who seek to enjoy all the charms of Southern hospitality in an elegant and sophisticated atmosphere. With its excellent location, welcoming staff, and upscale amenities, The Harpeth Hotel is an ideal choice for travelers young and old. Eat + Explore This has been my second trip to the beautiful city of Franklin, Tennessee, a charming escape from the hustle and bustle of a busy Broadway in Nashville, and it gets better every time. A setting right out of a Hallmark movie, there is something for everyone in Franklin, from music and culture to shopping and sipping. The food and beverage scene, however, is my favorite! Whether you’re looking for Southern comfort foods or charming distilleries, the dining and hospitality is worth the visit.
Starting with a stroll down the whimsical Main Street of historic downtown Franklin, a must-try is Grays on Main. Housed in a Victorian building, this three-story eatery offers a menu of locally sourced ingredients that complement an homage to Southern culinary traditions. Don’t skip the local craft beers and droolworthy dishes like Nashville Hot Chicken and, my personal favorite, Shrimp & Grits. From there, you can hop on the trolly and head to Leiper’s Fork Distillery, because no Tennessee trip would be complete without sampling their premium whiskey and bourbon. This stunning distillery and event venue offers tours, tastings, and even concerts by some surprise country music celebs. The sprawling outdoor lawn invites guests to sit, sip, and enjoy the grounds while sampling their whiskeys made from grain to glass right there by their own distilling team. ~ Jennifer DeCillis, Publisher Fashion + Frozen Fun When we recently went on a BELLA trip to Franklin to style this issue’s cover model, Jessie James Decker, we anticipated it would be lots of fun. Having styled the beautiful Jessie before, we knew she would look amazing in all the styles we had pulled for her. What we didn’t know was that we would add to our collection of pulls by simply walking around the cute town of Franklin. Stores like CT Grace and Wilder were so inviting, we couldn’t help but walk in to admire the fashions and accessories. Colleen, the stylish and friendly owner of CT Grace, was so gracious, and lent us incredible Nashville-inspired pieces to use for the photo shoot. And a pair of fringe earrings from Wilder boutique was perfect for one of the looks. But to sweeten the whole deal, literally, was Sweet Haven ice cream shop. They allowed our team to take photos right in front of their quaint store with Jessie eating one of their delicious ice cream cones. We also had a chance to sample some of their frozen treats (a scoop of their hot chocolate flavor did not disappoint!) ~ Mindy Gura & Paula Orlan, Stylists Jam Of course, no trip to Franklin would be complete without experiencing its vibrant music scene. The historic Franklin Theatre hosts live performances, indie films, and classic movies, while Puckett's Grocery and Restaurant offers top-notch country music concerts and an unparalleled taste of southern cuisine. Connect From the staff at The Harpeth hotel to the restaurants and shops we visited, the BELLA team and I encountered friendly and gregarious people who did not hesitate to strike up a conversation and were eager refer us to other amazing business owners in their town. When we first arrived, we walked a few blocks from the hotel in downtown Franklin and saw this adorable-looking shop, Olivia Olive Oil, and just had to go inside and check out. Besides the delicious olive oil samples we tried, we spoke to the owner who referred us to an equally amazing boutique next door, CTGrace, which led to a BELLA partnership. When you hear the name Jessie James Decker, her music most likely springs to mind. Rising to fame on the country music circuit, Jessie has captivated audiences worldwide, beginning with her own family. From an early age, her intense passion for music was nurtured by her big Italian family who served as her very first audience. “I would sit in front of them and sing over and over again,” says Jessie. “I knew I loved making people happy, and I enjoyed the way it felt.” A few months out of high school, Jessie scored a record deal, put out a top20 single, earned a gold record, and toured with the Jonas Brothers. Little did she know this was just the start of her journey. Fast-forward to the present and the talented star has broadened her skills. Inspired by the careers of such stars as Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, and Selena Quintanilla, Jessie has successfully—and harmoniously— created an entire brand. Jessie’s latest cookbook will be released in early October and her fashion brand, Kittenish, is currently collaborating with Flag & Anthem, a fashion brand she’s been a fan of for quite some time.

We sat down with the star for an in-depth conversation centered around her career both on and off the stage, and the most important life lesson she’s learned. With all that you have happening right now, would you say you’re living your childhood dream? Absolutely! I’m living it above and beyond what I ever thought I would be doing. I thought I’d just be making music; I never dreamed I’d be writing cookbooks and designing clothes. I’m so grateful. What can readers discover in your new cookbook? Are there any recipes that hold personal significance? I’ve loved all my books but this one is exciting for me because it encompasses the last few years of my life; it feels more personal. It contains a lot of my travel journeys and things I took away from my trips to Europe, Italy, and Greece. I’m half Italian, and half Greek, and cooking alongside amazing chefs was inspirational. When COVID happened, we started a garden, got chickens, and tried to get back to that homegrown life that inspired many of my recipes to be greener and cleaner. There are also warm chocolate chip cookies thrown in, so there’s ‘Louisiana Jess’ in there, but also the clean Mediterranean recipes as well. When it comes to your music, from where do you draw your inspiration? Whatever feels good to me. When I go to write something, I will write off experience—whatever I’m feeling at that time—and I feel like nine out of 10 times another woman can relate to it. I’m such a girl’s girl, surrounded by incredible women, and I’m always listening to their stories. I find inspiration from them and try to give them a voice. You’ve been making music for quite a while—how has your style evolved over time? It’s evolved but there’s also been consistency. I feel like you can still hear a song and say, ‘That’s a Jessie song.’ I do know I have a particular style, but I’ve evolved in what I’m singing about. I’ve matured… I’m not 18 anymore when I first started out professionally. I’m 35, so what was important to me at 18 is completely different from a 35-year-old woman.

Was there a significant moment that played a pivotal role in shaping your career? The biggest moment was our reality show [“Eric & Jessie: Game On”]. It was an instant thing; it changed everything. I went from not having many personal fans to a fan base of like 99% women. That’s all I’ve ever wanted—fans who were women because I feel I have so much to share, and I love the camaraderie. To this day, what has been a "pinch-me" moment for you? Any time I play the Grand Ole Opry is a pinch-me moment because I had drawn myself at 10 years old performing there. That’s what you dream about as a country singer—to get to that place. I’ve played there seven or eight times and every time I do, I can’t believe I made it and I’m on that stage. How do you leverage your platform to raise awareness for causes that hold significant importance to you? I let my husband, Eric, take the lead on that. He has a humanitarian heart and anything he feels passionate about, so do I. We had a foundation for a long time called ‘Deckers Dogs’ where we rescued dogs from kill shelters, trained them, and sent them home with veterans suffering from PTSD. Eric loves working with children; he works with Hope Kids Foundation quite often and we recently partnered with Fund Recovery. We’re always giving our love and time locally and to things outside of Tennessee that are near and dear.
"I don’t take no for an answer; there are many ways to make your dreams come true." Denim Suit: Love Melody EliteRepeatNY.com
Along with the book, what else is happening for you in 2023? In June [my clothing line] Kittenish was a part of Miami Fashion Week, and I’ll be putting out a Christmas record, which I’m really excited about.

What advice would you share with aspiring artists? I would let them know that no is not an answer. I’ve been told no my entire career, and I’m still told no today. I don’t take no for an answer; there are many ways to make your dreams come true. Be resilient, be relentless, and if you want something, fight for it. Don’t let the naysayers or negativity get in the way of what you want to do. What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned about maintaining a healthy work-life balance? For me, it’s put your family first always. A career is wonderful, and Marilyn Monroe said it best: ‘You can’t have a career to keep you warm at night.’ It’s wonderful to have a career and be driven, but if you’re doing the job and have guilt for missing out on doing something with your family, then what’s the point in doing it at all if you’re not going to enjoy it? Personally, for me, putting family first is better for my mental health, and putting my children and my husband as a priority just feels better. I promise you, if you put your family first, everything will balance itself out and you won’t endure that guilt we all feel as women.
