WELCOME The Student Managed Farm at Lakeland College, powered by New Holland, is very excited to present to you our second annual Beef Day. On behalf of the Lakeland College Purebred Unit, I would like to express how proud we are to offer this impressive set of Angus bulls. Again this year we will be offering a select group of open commercial heifers from our Commercial Unit. We believe that these lots of bulls and heifers are a perfect representation of our breeding program here at Lakeland College. We have bulls that offer calving ease and others that will add pounds to your calves. Alongside our tremendous offering of bulls and replacement females, we are continuing to feature the applied agricultural research trials being completed here at the college. As the Purebred Unit moves forward, we continue to focus on herd expansion. One of the main ways we are doing this is through an embryo program. This is a strategy we are using to increase our genetic stance by accepting embryo donations from proven genetic lines, as well as flushing some of our top cows. We also continue to use genetic testing in order to monitor our genetic progress and make management and breeding decisions. As always, we continue to retain our purebred replacement females in order to fulfill our vision of a larger cowherd, to in turn support a larger Beef Day Bull Sale offering. Please join us on Saturday, March 21st on the Lakeland College Farm to see what our program has to offer. We look forward to meeting each and every one of you at the sale. Please feel free to contact us prior to the sale if you have any questions. Grayden Kay

MARCH21 | LAKELANDCOLLEGE Welcome to our second annual Beef Day. The Lakeland College Student Managed Farm, powered by New Holland, is proud to host our second event here on campus. This year’s sale features our first sons of DMM Roar, as well sons of the proven Bismarck and Iron Mountain bulls. These sires have given us a great combination of low birth weight bulls that are suited to use in your heifer pen, and more performancedriven bulls to add pounds to your weaning weights. We all know the current strength of the beef market, and the optimism surrounding the coming months. Selecting bulls that offer economical traits to meet your operations needs is our goal. We would not be able to host this event without the incredible work of our students, the dedication of our farm staff, and the support of staff, faculty and the community. Thank you! We invite you out March 21 to view our program. The bulls and females will be on display, as well as information on our applied research here at Lakeland College. Please feel free to call anyone on our team who can be of assistance in your purchasing decisions. See you on the 21st, Robert Dixon, Geoff Brown & Lotte Kingsmill FACULTY ADVISORS TO THE SMF BEEF UNITS

FEEDER LAMBS Lakeland College will be entering its 2nd year of lamb feeding trials using the Growsafe residual feed intake equipment this Spring. The Growsafe equipment collects data about the amount of feed each lamb consumes daily, as well as their individual eating behavior patterns. This project is a collaboration with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development.

MANAGEMENT INTENSITY TRIALS
Lakeland College recently renovated its Livestock Research Centre enabling expansion into several areas of research, such as RFI (residual feed intake) research, and breed specific testing.
Lakeland will be continuing its 3rd year studying JART (jerusalem artichoke) agronomics including, crop planting, establishment, and fertilizer response. Additional tests will investigate stem and tuber harvesting along with JART control.
This year Lakeland College, along with three neighboring farmers, will be planting 20 acre replicated plots of Hard Red Spring Wheat assessing the effects of using different levels of management intensity (including; soil fertility, herbicides, fungicides, seed treatments, seeding rate). Last year’s management intensity trials were on field peas.
