MARCH26 LAKELANDCOLLEGE On behalf of the Purebred Unit of the Student Managed Farm, powered by New Holland, we are proud to present to you the Third Annual Beef Day Bull Sale. As we continue to grow as an operation, we sourced the best possible genetics on the market, as well as expanding our embryo program to provide customers with the very best genetics possible. We believe that these bulls are a perfect representation of our breeding program here at Lakeland College. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the years – without you, we wouldn’t be able to operate, so thank you! Looking at the group of bulls that we have assembled this year, there is something for everyone. Whether you are looking for that bull to add performance to your cows, or needing calving ease for your heifer pen, we definitely will be able to satisfy your bull needs. We are incredibly confident in these bulls to go out there and work for their new customers and will do everything necessary to make sure you are satisfied with your purchases. The cows that produce these bulls are sound, functional, good uddered, and have the genetic merit to provide progressive genetics in years to come. Looking further into the program, notice that the entire offering this year is sired by none other than DMM Roar, who has made a huge impact for the Purebred Unit. This year, we have one long yearling in the offering as well as nine yearling bulls; our numbers may be small but the quality is high. Our main focus is to be able to provide bulls for the cattle industry and strive to continue progress here at Lakeland College. As we focus on herd expansion, we add genetics through our embryo donation program, as well as flushing our own donor females here at the farm. We have continued to retain females to build our numbers, allowing us to have the impact of leading cow families with a strong maternal background, and with the goal to have a larger Beef Day offering. We would like to express our sincere gratitude for the continued support from the beef industry as a whole, along with those from the Angus community – it has been incredible. The students have learned from the numerous contacts and connections made throughout this past fall/winter show season, but their learning didn’t stop there. They have worked hard all year on numerous projects and will be showcasing a few of these achievements at Beef Day. Events such as this could not happen without countless hours of work on the part of the students, the dedication and hard work of our farm staff, the other support staff, faculty and, of course, the community. Thank you! On behalf of the Purebred Unit, We would like to invite you to view our program on March 26. If you would like to view the bulls prior to the sale or to discuss bull needs, feel free to call anyone on the Purebred SMF Team if we can be of assistance in your bull purchasing needs. If there was a bull that had the capability to leave exceptional females, as well as bulls, it was Roar. As you will see in this years offering, he sires all ten bulls. He was successfully used at Miller Wilson Angus, Reich Ranch, and Lakeland College. The genetic combination in Roar’s pedigree is second to none. His sire HF Tiger is one of the most popular bulls in the Angus world and continues to sire thousands of cattle around the globe. Tiger was the 2009 World Angus Forum Grand Champion Bull! He was also the 2010 NWSS Res. Sr. Division Champion at Denver, Colorado. On the maternal side of things, we all know how much of a game changer the Blackcap Essence cow family has been for the Miller Wilson herd. Roar’s calves are known for their heavy hair, strong width of top, and he was a bull that passed his sound structure, rib shape to both his females and males. The females he has left at both Miller Wilson Angus and the College are second to none and known for their strong maternal strengths. He was once slapped the Junior Champion Bull at Olds Fall Classic. Roar has made a major impact here at Lakeland College; unfortunately we lost him in the fall to an injury. This will be the second last opportunity to purchase progeny off of Roar, with all female progeny being retained in our herd.

Also known as Tyrone, 102B is a July-born long yearling that will be able to cover more numbers in his first year of breeding. 102B has continued to impress us and continues to show the potential you need in a herd bull. We believe that Tyrone has the power to produce exceptional calves with extra growth, and great performance in the feedlots. This is the first long yearling to ever be sold out of the college’s program. Take advantage of a unique pedigree that will allow you to get a large amount of cows bred the first year.
LOT 2 Brennan is a strong individual that shows great structural soundness and a powerful pedigree to back him up. Another son out of a Lookout Pacer daughter who continues to produce powerful calves year after year. 89C will increase weaning weights and add some bone structure.

The calf that you may have seen at Stockade, Agribition, Bull Congress, and who was Reserve Champion All Breeds Cow-Calf Pair at Vermilion Fair. 12C has continued to show the genetic profile that we have strived to produce, here at Lakeland College. His dam, OAV Laura 25T, is the College’s leading donor. Deep, soggy, and great width of top makes him what every cattleman looks for in a herd bull. Take advantage of a bull with longevity in his pedigree and off of a sire with extremely good maternal characteristics.

In the spring of 2014, the Lakeland College Embryo Program was established. It started when the first five embryos were donated from JVP Angus. With these donations, it allowed our Student Managed Farm Purebred Unit at Lakeland College to see our goal of herd expansion be put into motion. In 2015, the program grew once again when six additional breeders donated embryos and the first college cow, OAV Laura 25T was successfully flushed. With the addition of the donated eggs and the transfer of our own genetics, we set out to implant twenty-four commercial females The donated embryos have allowed the SMF Purebred Unit to further our genetics with some of the best in the Angus industry. It provides us opportunity for herd expansion, and to incorporate further learning opportunities and experiences for our students. This past fall, the unit decided to sell three embryos on our leading donor, Laura 25T. We would like to thank Corey Jones of Cor Vet Cattle Co. on purchasing the embryos out of the Power & Perfection Sale at Canadian Western Agribition. As we venture deeper into the genetic pool and focus on the thought of a larger Beef Day, one thing is for certain; we wouldn’t have been here without these generous breeders. We would like to thank the following breeders who graciously donated their genetics to the Lakeland College SMF Purebred Unit:

LAKELAND All colleges say they are educating the leaders of tomorrow. At Lakeland, our Agricultural Sciences students are leading today. • Crop Technology and Animal Science Technology students learn how to run a profitable business on the Student Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland, making 6-figure decisions about crops and livestock. • Agribusiness students plan Band in Sand. They select entertainment, market the event, sell 1,800+ tickets and emcee the show. Students also run all aspects of a business through Student Managed Enterprise. • In 8-months our Western Ranch and Cow Horse students take a horse from green to ready to work. They also organize and host a horse competition and sale. • Hosting a 16-week canine weight loss clinic to help pet owners raise healthy dogs is just one of the ways Animal Health Technology students take the lead. • And Veterinary Medical Assistant students get experience with many species of animals during labs in the small animal clinic, shifts in the dairy, and helping with orphan lambs on the campus farm.
Real work experience and valuable leadership skills are what you gain as a Lakeland Aggie. It’ll set you apart from others when you transition from our college to your career.
