HEREFORDS

Welcome

Welcome to Big Gully’s Online/On-Farm Bull & Heifer Sale. We invite you to attend in person or online and experience our vision for enhancing Herefords. We were overwhelmed by the support received during our initial sale and have you to thank for that! We have slightly and responsibly increased the number of bulls to appease a broader group of potential customers, while hopefully ensuring strong value in the livestock. The live, video sale at Big Gully Farm will commence at 5:30 p.m. MST on Thursday, December 10th. Cattle will be available for appraisal all afternoon. Supper and drinks will be served at 4:30 p.m. As usual, online bidding via LiveAuctions.tv will be available beginning on December 7th, and conclude simultaneously with the live sale on farm. Please arrive early to view cattle, while still daylight, and to enjoy the pre-sale holiday social! We spend considerable time viewing all breeds via judging, exhibiting, sales, farm visits or ultrasounding. As such, we realize there is tremendous opportunity for improvement within Herefords. Relative to the quality and growth of the breed within the U. S., we are just uncovering our potential to create more functional, versatile and profitable cattle than Hereford has put forth in some time. Within Canada, we feel a renewed eagerness and vision within the breed is underway, no doubt enhanced by more young adults and progressive breeders excited to distribute seedstock under the current market conditions. It is our intent to be more critical and honest in the evaluation of our breed and herd than most any potential customer ever could be. As such, increasing muscle, enhancing udder quality, moderating frame, bolstering center body dimension, moderating birth weight, advancing carcass merit, increasing pigmentation and optimizing performance are actions we will proceed with. Should you value these traits and the Hereford pillars of superior docility, hardiness and feed efficiency, our cattle may interest you. Furthermore, if you find your cowherd becoming very homogenous in terms of breed influence and want to capitalize on heterosis/hybrid vigour, we would love to offer a complimentary breed to achieve that. We are proud to offer these cattle with the meticulous work, time and thought invested in their selection and mating. We don’t aim to sell purebred, commercial, show, ranch ready, ranch raised or any other type of Herefords – only those that are of high quality. Clearly this sale will focus on quality, not quantity, since that is the responsibility of our farm. In the current market scenario, there is little merit in keeping marginal breeding stock when they can be sold as cull cows or steers at a profit, while enhancing the average quality of the bulls and hopefully the public perception of our cattle. Don’t be mistaken that high quality means expensive though. We are a relatively small provider of bulls within the breed and are trying hard to foster a gratified and progressive-thinking customer base. We don’t publish purchase prices in our promotion or footnotes and firmly believe that cost and quality are often an imperfect relationship. We have always and will continue to maintain that cattle exhibited at show can serve as functional breeding tools in the pasture as well. If you disagree, we would be happy to explain our rationale for this and show living proof of cattle that have done both successfully. In the last few years our cattle have been evaluated by many breeders, judges and producers at exhibitions in Canada and the U.S., ranking favourably not only within the breed, but against other breeds. That coupled with performance data collected on every eligible animal for calving ease, birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, cow weight, udder score, intramuscular fat, ribeye area, and back fat reinforces the phenotypic and genetic merit of the cattle, respectively.

Proud supporters of

4

As proponents of expected progeny differences (EPDs), we have put considerable selection pressure on these for generations. Obviously EPDs are a tool; therefore we utilize them and feel competitive with anyone from a data standpoint. We are also among the initial breeders

to submit samples for Genomically Enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) on all of our herd sires and sale cattle. For those unfamiliar, this testing allows a higher degree of accuracy in knowing the true genetic merit of our cattle at a younger age for a variety of traits – essentially a risk management practice. If you are unfamiliar with either of these tools or there utility, we would gladly discuss them prior to the sale. Note that current GE-EPDs are available on three long-yearlings. Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, GEEPDs will not be published on remaining sale animals until late December. All females will be delivered immediately after the sale. FREE OF CHARGE, all bulls will be developed at the farm where Shari will ultrasound for carcass merit in the spring, after which time breeding soundness examinations will be performed before delivery of the bulls by May 1, 2016. We know that unforeseen circumstances potentially arise with semen testing and breeding. Our intent is to be honest and timely with you and we expect the same in terms of finding a solution that will please you. As a precaution, all sale bulls had scrotal circumference measurements taken independently in early October to confirm that the yearlings, but more importantly calves, are developing toward the highest probability of passing a breeding soundness exam come next spring. Rest assured that a quality assortment of remaining bulls are available to customers, should adversity present itself, regarding their purchases or existing sires. If our vision of the Hereford breed aligns with the objectives of your operation, we would love to host you at this pre-Christmas event. Please join us for supper and drinks between viewing the cattle and the sale itself. No matter if you are interested or just curious about the offering, we would encourage you to at least take a look and see if the type of Hereford cattle we strive to produce may work for you! Sincerely, Lance & Shari Leachman Frances Leachman Tyler Leachman

FULL THRUST is the lone sale bull we utilized post-AI on a group of heifers this spring. Our utilization of him hinged on his combination of desirable traits from the “47R” and “611” combination. He is a deep ribbed, bold centered bull that is secure in motion and attractively designed. He is deceptively wide when viewed from behind, maintains moderation of frame and is among the largest scrotal circumference of the coming 2-yearolds. Just as importantly, his goggle eyes and short marked characteristics give him mating flexibility in commercial situations. His mother is among our most productive mid-aged cows and produced a full brother purchased by Steve White in last year’s sale. Ranks in the top 10% of the breed for REA. We will retain an in-herd semen interest.

DIVIDEND is among the youngest longyearlings, but doesn’t compromise in quality or dimension – particularly with his modest birth weight. He initiates a quality group of similarly bred sons of 2013 Agribition Champion and 2014 Denver Senior Champion WCC/CC 1009 GREAT DIVIDE 102. DIVIDEND is long sided, really level designed and offers substantial shape to his top, hip and lower quarter. He offers a favourable multi-trait genetic profile and comes from a productive maternal cow family possessing extra body dimension and muscle. Three-quarter sibs sell as Lots 5, 10, 12 and 17. Ranks in the top 5% of the breed for FAT; 10% for YW.

Lot 3

TAKE STOCK is an exciting genetic combination who excels in length of body and apparent performance with short markings and full eye pigment. He is one of few Canadian progeny by “C STOCKMAN 2059 ET” a bull whose sons have proven stout and whose daughters we eagerly anticipate dropping calves in 2016. The maternal component of the pedigree should prove exciting with a Denver Champion paternal grandmother in “NOTICE ME”. Note that no other bull offers the marbling ability expected of 330B from the combination of “STOCKMAN” and “FANTASTIC”. Ranks in the top 10% of the breed for MARB.

EPDs and genomics are highly utilized as selection tools. Yearling bulls and heifers are ultrasounded for carcass merit.

Lot 4

WINTER SOLDIER is a conservatively framed bull that should excel from a maternal perspective. He is ideal in terms of balance, structure and body dimension. He’s short marked, red eyed and shaped smooth through his front one-third, yet big and square topped. Udder quality and milk flow are readily apparent on both sides of the pedigree. His “47R”-sired dam was unfortunately lost at a young age after having been utilized as a donor. The genetic profile is exceptional with multiple trait excellence. Lot 6

GROUND ZERO impresses from the standpoint of muscle expression, center body dimension and stoutness of structure in a dark red package. His “611”-sired dam is among the strongest, stoutest cows in the herd, while still maintaining udder quality and maternal character. “CRUZ” has unquestionably bred the most stoutness and power into his progeny of any bull we have utilized, thereby suited for use on cows initially. From a carcass standpoint the pedigree suggests high yield potential. Ranks in the top 5% of the breed for FAT and REA, 15% for YW, MILK and TM.

ROLLING STONE is a three-quarter brother to Lot 8 featuring the combination of “47R” and “611” who compliment each other really well. He is a skeletally extended, strong topped bull who is deep ribbed and doesn’t sacrifice performance, given his age. He should be a practical breeding tool as well considering his structural correctness and fluid motion at the ground. His midage dam is dark red, heavily pigmented and possesses a level, properly spaced udder. Ranks in the top 10% of the breed for REA; 15% for MILK and TM.

AVENGER is simply a practical breeding tool with an appealing multiple trait genetic profile who should be able to cover a set of cows due to his structural correctness. AVENGER is actually a maternal brother to 2010 Agribition Supreme Champion, BIG-GULLY 611 BOUNTY 517U and a pair of our premier “611” daughters. With much of this catalogue dedicated to bulls, we wanted to inform you on developments within the cowherd as well. We have backed away from showing females and merchandising as many in an attempt to maximize the size of our heifer contemporary group for the most accurate genetic evaluation available. We intend to upgrade our inclusion of polled bulls in breeding scenarios to accommodate more marketing flexibility. We recently culled about 20% of our females to introduce the largest and most exciting group of replacement heifers yet. We have reintroduced a small herd of Angus and Angus-influenced females to benchmark our progress within the Herefords. We finally feel the cowherd is at the level where udder quality, foot structure, muscle, body dimension and docility have not been compromised on any female. We believe strongly in maintaining a youthful cowherd that should genetically outperform itself quickly, therefore explaining an average age of 4.48 years for breeding age females with our oldest trio of cows soon turning 11. We synchronize and AI breed all heifers, with the majority of cows bred AI as well. We plan to aggressively elevate our embryo transfer implants. We feel that keeping our females more exclusive will ensure the highest quality maternal factories to produce superior bulls for your benefit. Although chances to publicly view the females may be less apparent, we encourage you to stop by anytime to see what we have been working on!

HAWTHORNE is a very exciting component of the sale in that he suits many of the criteria commercial cattleman voice to us as important. These include his calf crop leading testicular development and physical body weight. Plus, extra pigment on his neck, eyes and legs should allow more marketing versatility in his progeny. Moreover-his extra scale, length of body, stoutness of structure, center body dimension and muscular shape set him apart. He resembles his 47R mother in regard to volume and rib shape, while offering a strong compliment of ribeye and marbling. Ranks in the top 10% of breed for YW and SC; 15% for WW and REA. A full sister was a standout bred heifer in last year’s sale, purchased by Wood B Herefords. We will retain an in-herd semen interest.

Replacement heifers are developed on super oats, Cargill Right Now mineral and Alfalfa/Brome/Wheatgrass hay.

Lot 13

ARMANI is as genuinely powerful and wide based a calf as we have produced so far, no surprise for the power and muscle his sire, C CRUZ 0248 ET, transmits. From the profile, he has excellent neck/shoulder attachment, strength of top and levelness of hip. From the ground up, this calf is base wide, stout stifled and wide pinned. Adding to this, 453C is big topped, bold centered while possessing a strong weight per day of age. Note his red neck and fully pigmented red eyes. Ranks in the top 5% of the breed for REA; 10% for YW. A highquality maternal half-sister sold in one of our internet sales to Colton Black of Chariton, IA.

Lot 14

RAY BAN, a three-quarter brother to Lot 15, is a phenotypically complete, low birth weight, Polled option. Moreover, he is open centered, long sided and structurally correct. Maternally, both sides of his pedigree should be expected to contribute superior udder quality and milk flow. His first-calf mother is among our finest young females due to her correct udder, skeletal design and maternal character. RAY BAN should offer great mating versatility in that he could be utilized on a set of heifers, while transmitting pay weight and replacement female potential. Ranks in the top 15% of the breed for YW.

Lot 15

OAKLEY, a three-quarter brother to Lot 14, is a smooth POLLED, moderate birth weight breeding option who is red legged and red necked. He engages from the profile with his high neck/shoulder attachment, straight lines and length of body. Once again, maternal character is readily apparent on both sides of his pedigree and his dam was a powerful and impressive first calf heifer that we had to part with early in life due to a foot injury she sustained as a calf. Ranks in the top 5% of the breed for YW; 10% for REA; 15% for WW, TM and SC.

LACOSTE is wide based, big ribbed, structurally correct and well advanced in his testicular development. His dam was a highly productive “PURE GOLD 1117” daughter. He is skeletally extended, deep sided and sound on the move. Plus, his genetic predictions and physical appearance suggest he should convey desirable pay weight and maternal replacement ability to a calf crop. His dam is a functional, productive and quality uddered young cow with her first progeny both included in this sale. Ranks in the top 10% of the breed for YW and FAT; 15% for WW and TM.

HILUX is from an “R” Pure Gold daughter with exceptional udder levelness and teat length/diameter. He is among the initial C 88X RIBEYE 2011 sons we are offering. “2011” is a son of the renowned “88X”, who has achieved phenomenal success in the U.S. by creating muscular, low birth, highly pigmented progeny. Lot 19

KLEIN is a larger statured, later maturing bull who might best be utilized on cows in a multiple sire pasture scenario. Exceptional length of side, straightness of lines and growth potential best describe him. His C PURE GOLD 1117 sired mother is among our most productive cows-in part due to her length, pigment, udder quality and performance. Cumulatively, performance and maternal capability should be apparent in his offspring. A maternal half-sister was purchased in one of our internet sales by Marty Flicek. SWEET PEA is a conservative framed POLLED heifer that features considerable pigment and goggle eyes. Her paternal grandsire is the popular Semex sire, “Lego”. SWEET PEA mirrors her 47R dam’s characteristics regarding exceptional expansion and depth of ribcage-suggesting she should easily maintain her body condition. A three-quarter sister sells as Lot 21. AI bred to SLDK VENDETTA V-9 ET, then pasture exposed to C 88X RIBEYE 2011-pregnancy diagnosed approximately 100 days pregnant on August 4, 2015. Online bidding S A L E S TA R T Bidding will open December 7 at 9:00am and will closeout on December 10 at 5:30pm MST, simultaneously with the live sale. We will be hosting the live video sale on December 10 at Big Gully Farm, located 12 miles north of Maidstone, SK. Videos of the sale lots can be viewed at www.biggullyfarm.com.

H O W T O PA R T I C I PAT E In order to participate in the online auction you will need to pre-register and obtain a buyer number. Go to the LiveAuctions website, www.liveauctions.tv, and select Big Gully’s Online/On-Farm Bull & Heifer Sale (you may need to create a user name and password if this is your first time). After logging in select the link that says, “register for a buyer number.” This form requires you to fill out your bank’s name, city, state, phone number and a contact. You may register to bid after bidding has opened but please remember that authorization to bid is not instantaneous. H O W T H E A U C T I O N W O R K S Once you have a username and have received a buyer number then you are ready to bid. You will see a screen that is unique to your user ID. There will be a list containing the sale lots. If

you click on a lot, the video clip or photo will be displayed to the right. The next bid, current price, proxy bid, and manual bid buttons will be displayed below the video area. This page will react to your bids by stating, “you are in” or “you are out.” No one else will be able to see your bid – that data is not accessible to the public. Each time you login, the auction screen will display your personal bidding information. Your auction screen is unique and private displaying your activity to only you. Remember that you must have the lot that you are bidding on selected. This is where it tells you if you are in or out. It is here where you can also see your proxy (automatic) bid settings as applicable. W H AT I S A P R OX Y B I D ? With a proxy bid you can enter your maximum bid and then sit back and watch. When you enter a proxy bid amount the LiveAuctions system automatically bids on your behalf up to your maximum bid. If the lot closes out for less than your maximum, that’s all you’ll have to pay. This means that you don’t have to keep coming back to re-bid every time another bid is placed. This makes it more convenient and less time consuming. It can also greatly assists

those breeders that can’t be near a computer or are busy with other duties at the time of the final bidding. Your maximum amount is kept confidential from other bidders and the seller. Even though you can see this amount on your screen, no one else can. The LiveAuctions system compares your bid to those of the other registered bidders and the system automatically places bids on your behalf, using only as much of your bid as is necessary to maintain your high bid position. The system will bid only up to your maximum amount as necessary to maintain you as the high bidder. If another bidder has a higher maximum, you’ll be outbid and the system will tell you that “YOU’RE OUT.” But, if no other bidder has a higher maximum you win the final bid.
