to the 22nd Annual Moose Creek Red Angus yearling bull sale. We thank you for your interest and time reading through our sale offering. We are very proud of the group that we have catalogued, and feel that they are a very good representation of our program.

There have been a few changes in our operation in the past 12 months. First, we are slowly transitioning our herd to spring calving. The benefits to our stock, our land and the people are very evident with this more balanced approach to management. The next and most noticeable change was our 2-Year-Old Bull Sale we hosted in early February. Many had questioned our sanity hosting a second sale; however, the response, interest and feedback proved it was the right choice. We entertained a large crowd and enjoyed aggressive bidding from all three prairie provinces. If you are a repeat customer, you already know about our program and philosophies. For anyone that hasn’t done business with us, we are a simple cow outfit: grass based genetics, alternative feeding practices, disciplined breeding strategies and sincere customer service. The offering of yearling bulls reflects the first three and if you select a bull from the sale, you will experience the fourth. We have been in the Red Angus bull business for nearly six decades. Our unwavering dedication will be there if any problems do arise. Please come in the car, bring your wife or family and stay after the sale for our famous steak fry. It is our pleasure to host you.

Glenn, Donna, Candace & Darren p.s. The steaks will be sizzling and ready for you!

A large thank you goes out to the hundreds of cattlemen and women that we have supplied bulls to in our 40 year history. It has been an honour to call so many of you friends and to have your loyal support. Many have been with us for over 25 years while spanning three different generations of bull buyers.

We are certainly blessed to have supporters like you.

CONDITIONS & GUARANTEES: All entries sell with

a responsible breeder’s guarantee of satisfaction. In the unlikely event of any dispute whatever, regular TERMS & CONDITIONS shall apply in accordance with the Canadian Angus Association Code of Ethics. ALL CATTLE ARE SOLD subject to tests as required

for export under Regulations of the Health of Animals Branch, Department of Agriculture for Canada. Export health chart and brokerage charges are the responsibility of the purchaser.

TERMS OF PAYMENT: Cash or cheque payable to the

Clerk of Sale on Sale Day. U.S. Funds will be accepted at the current Rate of Exchange on sale day. INSURANCE: Ownership risk to Purchaser com-

mences when Auctioneer’s hammer falls. Full

Mortality Insurance is available sale day. Cattle returning to Moose Creek Red Angus after the sale must be insured.

HOLDING & SHIPPING: Approximately one week is

required for export transfers and other documents to be processed. Export animals will be held at the Sale location at no charge and under excellent care. Joint export shipping arrangements to obtain minimal shipping cost will gladly be made if instructions to that effect are provided to Clerk of Sale at time of settlements. TRUCKING: Free trucking will be available to the

Prairie Provinces at the purchaser’s convenience before May 1, 2016. Delivery after May 1, 2016 will be at a mutually agreed upon time for both parties. Most deliveries will be to your yard but

some may be to central locations due to load size and time. If the truck is headed past your yard, expect your bull to be on the load. Anyone taking advantage of the free trucking must insure their bulls. No exceptions. HAUL YOUR OWN: Bring your trailer sale day and

receive a $100 discount per bull.

OWNERS: Reserve the right to withhold from

export shipment animals for whom Buyer or Buyer’s agent have not made arrangements for payment in full, or other satisfactory arrangements, prior to time of export departure.

We felt it only fitting to start the sale with a full brother to last year’s lead off bull. 65S is being flushed this year because of her amazing track record; and I hate flushing so that tells you how good she has been. Duralta, WRAZ, Guigion and Metzger have sons.

His sons are very salable (high-selling sire group in the 2015 yearling bull sale) and his daughters are proving to be soggy, moderate, beautiful uddered cows. TY

PINE CHIEF

This straight-Canadian bred sire has crossed wonderfully with our Gangster daughters. This is the footnote that made us want to acquire Ty, “If we didn’t have so many Tyron daughters, he would stay at home. I would rank his dam as either #1 or #2 in the herd… I don’t think we have ever raised a calf with this kind of “bet the ranch” ability to produce top end females.”

It is important to purchase herd bulls from programs that mirror yours. When my old buddy Boyd Lines called me up and said he had a good one, I knew we had better go look. Boy did he ever. Boyd runs a no “BS” outfit and his breeding stock have always worked for us. Pine Chief is no different. His first daughters are freshening and they are something else. His sons highlighted our 2-YearOld Bull Sale. Maternal, performance and handy birth weights.

BULL DEVELOPMENT W

e pride ourselves in providing a sound, well managed and durable sale offering. This group is the result of more than 40 years of Red Angus breeding and development decisions. Our role as a seedstock producer is not taken lightly; we spend countless hours researching, evaluating and measuring growth, gain and fertility in our herd. These decisions ultimately affect your bottom line. It’s important that we get it right, for your operation and ours. As the old saying goes – feeding cattle is half science, half art and half luck. We continue to work directly with our livestock nutritionist to develop our bulls on less grain and more forage. The benefits of a “cooler” ration have been documented hundreds of times but rarely acted on. We are not afraid to tell you what our bulls eat. A maximum of 8.3 lbs/ day rolled corn, 2.15 lbs/day custom bull supplement, chopped alfalfa hay and the balance corn silage. This ration targets a 3.2 lbs/day gain; very similar to what the bulls were gaining prior to weaning. With all of the forage in their ration and the large paddock to run in, the bulls are athletic and ready for spring turn out. A strong vaccination plan is very important to us as well. All of the calves born here receive SomnuStar pH at birth and then are vaccinated with SomnuStar pH, StarVac 4 and Blackleg at branding and again at weaning. The cowherd is vaccinated prior to breeding with a modified live strain to control IBR, BVD, PI3 and Iteme. To our knowledge, we are the first Red Angus herd to PI test our entire cowherd and keep that status current. We have been a PI BVD free herd since 2004, the year we started testing. The cowherd is run just as our customers do – bale graze, corn graze, graze stockpile native range. We are currently in the WBDC cost of production study, ranking our operation against some of the top commercial cow/calf operations in the province. It is very important to us to be able to raise our herd in a low cost environment, the kind that our customers are moving towards. We certainly aren’t the cheapest cost of production but I am proud to say we are holding our own, even with the added costs of maintaining a registered herd. Finally, all of these bulls were bred, born and raised here. The guy opening the trailer door in your yard is the same guy that bred this bull to that cow, tagged the calf and ran the feedwagon to feed him. We are in the business of selling bulls – poundmakers, momma cow makers or non trouble makers – 365 days of the year. If you phone to ask about a certain bull, rest assured, we know all there is to know about him. Because it’s important we get it right, for your operation and ours.

~ Darren

NEW DNA TEST COULD PROVIDE KEY TO PROFIT “Testing for the leptin gene in livestock is a new cutting edge proposition associated with DNA gene markers. The IGENITY-L™ test, provided by Merial, allows producers to utilize yet another tool in beef production to improve carcass merit. “Leptin is a protein produced in white fat tissue and the more leptin produced, the stronger the signal is sent to the brain to reduce appetite,” Tate says. “The leptin protein is directly related to appetite, energy utilization and fat deposition.” (Clifford, 2005).

will be available sale day, and will also be posted on our website, www.moosecreekredangus.com

Milk Production:

RFI (Residual Feed Intake) testing. “An efficient bull will pass

Prior research indicates that a SNP at position 305 of exon 2 in the leptin gene affects milk production in dairy cows. Dairy cows with at least one copy of the T allele have been shown to have higher milk production than CC cows. If that effect carries over to beef breeds, it is reasonable to expect that CT and TT beef cows will wean heavier calves than CC beef cows. We tested this hypothesis for a herd of mixed breed cows using anova.

The Effect of Leptin on Average Daily Gain and Feed Efficiency:

(Anim Genet. 2008 Jun;39(3):284-6. doi: 10.1111/j. The impact of a leptin gene SNP on beef calf weaning weights. DeVuyst EA, Bauer ML, Cheng FC, Mitchell J, Larson D.)

on superior genetics for feed efficiency to his progeny, which will be realized as feed savings for calves in the feedlot and for replacement heifers entering the cowherd.” (From: http://www1. agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/agdex10861). The particular gene being examined produces leptin, which is associated with appetite. Cattle with the fully mutated form of leptin (genotype TT) put on weight faster than those with the slightly mutated form (genotype CT) which put on weight faster than those with the non mutated form of leptin (genotype CC). (From: http://www.innovationplace.com/thescene/news/56.html) • Leptin positive animals finish for slaughter approximately 37 days faster and had an ADG of 3.323 compared with non-positive animals that had an ADG of 2.937.

• Leptin positive animals also exhibit a greater feed efficiency (6.4) compared to non-positive animals (8.2). (Quantum Management Protocol)

Yield Grade:

Although the results vary in terms of the proportion that grade AAA or higher, the trend has always been the same: TT cattle have a much higher chance of AAA, or in the USA system “choice”.

Results indicated that both crossbred CT and TT beef cows wean significantly heavier beef calves than CC crossbred beef cows.

HOW TO USE EPDS IN SIRE SELECTION Each individual breeder must set his own selection goals based on the needs of his operation, the situation for that trait in his herd, and his production environment. It would be easier if we could assume that the highest EPDs are the best. Unfortunately, it isn’t that simple. Like most decisions, using EPDs for sire selection involves tradeoffs. For example, bulls with high growth EPDs may sire calves with a higher birth weight as well. And there may be other impacts on your operation to consider. For example, when breeding heifers it is desirable to produce calves with lower birth weights, so a breeder may want to pay special attention to birth weight EPDs of prospective bulls. If all calves were sold as feeders, the milk EPD would generally not rate much attention. Yearling weight will be important if you want to ensure finished steers in the appropriate weight range. It should also be kept in mind that reaction to selection can differ from trait to trait. This is because some traits have higher heritability than others, and are more easily passed to offspring. For instance growth traits such as weaning weight respond faster to selection, than reproductive traits such as age at first calving. A balance of traits is required, and the perfect balance for you will depend on your climate, nutritional and economic environment, as well as the management goals you have set for your herd. One way to select for several traits is to set minimum and maximum acceptable levels for each trait, and then choose sires that meet the criteria. Another method would be to rank all sires on each trait, then develop a weighted index which ranks each bull from one (most desirable) to five (least desirable) for each trait.
