From Lab to the Field, Today’s Crop Seeds, Better, Stronger Growing up in Belle Plaine, science classes were never Tim Stier’s favorite part of the school day. But today, as a farmer and sales representative for a major seed company, he knows how science has made crops better and stronger. The old adage regarding the height of corn by Independence Day is historically outdated. Only a late planting and uncooperative weather, like in the spring of 2014, will keep corn below knee high by the Fourth of July. “Mother Nature is still in control,” Stier said. But seed companies like Pioneer, which Tim Stier represents, have invested heavily in research to produce crop seeds that will thrive in adverse growing conditions. Just as the technology in farm machinery has gone high-tech, the seeds farmers plant today are far superior to their predecessors. “The world’s population

is continuing to grow. Farmers have to produce more food for that population,” Stier said. Though they may look the same as they did back in the 1970s or early‘80s, the 80,000 seeds in a bag of field corn couldn’t be much different. Thanks to scientific research and the knowledge gained from decades of genetic research, farmers today can, weather permitting, potentially increase the yields they receive from their crops. Field corn, soybean and other seeds today are genetically engineered to withstand heavy soils that hold moisture longer, the kind of soil found north of the river and elsewhere. Seed today, thanks to research, can also thrive in sandy soil that doesn’t hold moisture as well, like the soil along the north side of Highway 169 near Oak Crest Elementary School. Working with the technology in equipment that measures soil moisture, farmers can control how densely are planted in variable soil types.

Less Moisture, Fewer Seeds

Joel Karsten

The typical cornfield can averages about 36,000 seeds per acre, Stier said. But in a field with soil that doesn’t hold moisture as well, a farmer using seeds engineered to tolerate a limited-moisture environment can reduce that count to between 20,000 and 30,000 seeds an acre.

“It’ll probably produce more,” he said. Other advances in seed technology include seeds that withstand herbicides. Pioneer, for example, has a Roundup Ready seed that withstands herbicides meant to destroy unwanted, yieldrobbing weeds of grasses.

Pioneer, a division of DuPont Chemical, has a research facility in Johnson, Iowa. Tim Stier Farms operate four five-acre test plots in Belle

Wednesday, April 15, 2015 and 105 days. That makes a big difference in a year like 2014 when a wet, cold spring kept farmers out of their fields until well into May, Stier said. The early onset of winter shortened the season even more. Still, many areas enjoyed bumper soybean and corn crops, thanks to technological advances. The U.S. Department of Agriculture notes 22 states had record corn crops and 15 broke previous marks for soybean production. “This level of productivity would have been unimaginable to the growers who planted the first Pioneer hybrid corn nearly a century ago,” according to Jack Jeschke, editor of Pioneer’s 2015 agronomy research summary for the northern United Stares. “The historic yields of 2014 serve as a testament to the continuous improvements in crop genetics and management practices that have been achieved over the years.” Back in the 1970s, farmers wouldn’t have expected to be planting before May 10. But thanks to science, seeds have more vigor than ever before and can tolerate cooler soil conditions and temperatures, he said. “You get better roots. Better roots give you a better yield,” he said. The research performed in laboratories and verified in test plots challenges Stier and sales reps. like him to stay abreast of improvements in genetic research. In his office south of Belle Plaine, an open conference room includes an Internet-fed bigscreen TV where he is able to learn about the latest advances in seed technology. But all the research and technology comes with an increase in price. An 80,000kernel bag of seed corn that cost about $100 a bag in the early-1990s costs about $380 today, Stier said. The typical bag, depending on soil conditions, can cover about 2 to 2½ acres.

Are Your Spring Cleaning Products Safe? (StatePoint) Do you know what ingredients are in the cleaning products you buy? Probably not, as there are no federal governmental regulations requiring companies to disclose their contents. But harsh chemicals can take their toll on the indoor air quality of your home, are harmful to the environment and may irritate eyes and skin. So how can you learn more about the cleaning products you plan to purchase? Luckily, certain retailers are making it easier for consumers to make informed decisions. For example, in 2011 Whole Foods Market introduced the Eco-Scale Rating System, which are the first household cleaner standards offered by a retailer. This season, don’t just spring clean your home; take stock of your cleaners and clean up your entire act. By opting for green cleaning products, you can help make your home a safer, healthier place. Here’s how: • Do an audit: Take a look at the cleaning products you currently own. Just because a brand or product is well known does not make it a healthy option. A quick Internet search can reveal the safety attributes of a product’s ingredients -- so long as the manufacturer has chosen to disclose ingredients. Toss anything problematic and make a shopping list of what you need to replace. • Full disclosure: Avoid cleaning products that don’t disclose what ingredients they use. Look for brands, such as 365 Everyday Value, that make it easy for you to know what ingredients are being used in the product you’re purchasing. • Be informed: Know what ingredients to avoid entirely. Harsh ingredients like formaldehyde and chlorine can still be found in cleaning products today. Don’t know where to start? Take a look at the list of more than 40 ingredients that aren’t allowed in Whole Foods Market’s cleaning products, including chlorine, formaldehyde, phosphates, phthalates and tri-

closan. • Lock-up: No matter the contents of your cleaners, it’s good practice to keep them stored in a safe place, such as a locked cabinet. Young children and pets should not be able to access your cleaning products supply. • Do it yourself: A quick and easy way to know exactly what’s in your cleaning products is to make them yourself. Luckily, only a few inexpensive ingredients are needed to make your own all-purpose cleaner. Simply mix one part water with one part vinegar, add a few drops of your favorite pure essential oil, and you have an allpurpose spray. Baking soda is another great cleaner that

has a mild scrubbing power and helps combat odors. Don’t have the time to make your own cleaner? The Eco-Scale Rating system evaluates products for environmental impact, safety, efficacy, source, labeling and animal testing. Visit WholeFoodsMarket.com/ecoscale

to learn more. If you’re using conventional cleaning supplies, you may be exposing your family to harmful ingredients. By learning more about the products you use, you can green your spring cleaning, for a healthier home.

Time-Saving Spring Cleaning Tips for Your Home’s Outdoor Spaces (StatePoint) It’s time to prep your home’s outdoor spaces for the season ahead. From the yard to the garage to the deck, getting these areas tidy is all part of a thorough spring clean. Here are some tips to make the process faster and easier. De-Clutter Your Workspace Your shed, your garage, your toolbox -- it’s time to take stock of what you’re storing in these key areas. Broken tools, piles of junk – these are items that will get in your way and slow you down all season long. So before you get to the nitty gritty of your outdoor spring clean, take the time to organize your workspace. Throw out what is junk, donate what you aren’t using, and organize the rest into categories. Vertical storage can save crucial room, so install tall shelves and use walls and the ceiling to install organizational systems. Now is also a great opportunity to perform routine maintenance on your lawn equipment and tools to improve their efficiency. Identify Multitasking Tools Check out innovations on old tools that can make your versatile workload easier. For example, you can upgrade your conventional pressure washer for a newer model with more diverse functionality. For example, Briggs & Stratton’s new POWERflow+ Pressure Washer technology has one pump with two separate cleaning modes -- high pressure and high flow, which work for different tasks. Remember, different surfaces require different cleaning techniques. Whether you’re cleaning up tough mold and mildew stains from your deck or patio or washing the more delicate surface of your car, you can switch modes or apply soap directly from the nozzle. This feature eliminates the need for switching attachments or walking back to the pressure washer,

making an afternoon of diverse to-dos manageable. Just be sure you’re using the proper mode for the task. Tips and instructional videos can be found at www.PowerFlowPlus.com. Do Smart Yard Maintenance If you have a larger yard, consider a riding mower to save time and energy on lawn maintenance. Remember not to over mow your lawn. Not only is it not healthy for the grass, it can be a time suck and increase your carbon footprint needlessly. Likewise, only water your lawn and garden when necessary. During periods of rain, you can ease up on this chore. The most efficient

times of day to water your lawn are morning. When the sun is strongest, you will lose more water to evaporation and your work will be for naught. By changing up your lawn care habits, you can save time all season.

While working outdoors can be fun, don’t spend more time than you need to on your household spring cleaning tasks. Finding simple ways to be more efficient will give you more time to enjoy your home’s outdoor spaces.

What to Know About Replacing Your Mower (StatePoint) Now is a great time to take stock of your lawn equipment, and assess whether your gear can withstand another season of wear and tear. If you’ve determined it’s time to replace your toolshed’s most valuable player -- your lawn mower -- get informed so you can make a savvy decision, as mower technology has changed a lot in the last several years. Whether this is your first mower, your old mower is on the fritz or you’re simply looking to upgrade, these tips and considerations can help you make a decision that’s wise for you and your lawn. Budget The first thing to take into account is your budget. You need the most dependable and durable mower that you can afford. However, keep in mind, you may not have to pay the entire cost of the mower upfront. Some brands offer various financing options that allow you to make payments over time. Whether you’re seeking low minimum payments or you want to minimize interest payments, ask your dealer about your options. Mowing Properties Take into account the size of your property. A smaller lawn requires a smaller machine. “For properties under a half acre, a 21- to 36-inch walkbehind mower should be ideal, says Daryn Walters at Exmark, a leading manufacturer of residential and commercial mowers. For smaller lawns, consider Exmark’s Commercial 30 or a small zero-turn mower such as the Exmark Quest S-Series machine with a 34-inch cutting deck. Their mowers require little maintenance and offer fuel economy and durability. If you live on a larger plot of land, don’t rule out a commercial zero-turn mower, which is more durable, tends to be more comfortable to operate, and offers increased productivity with more professional-looking results. Keep in mind, proper-

ties of more than an acre may warrant a mower with a 60- to 72-inch cutting deck. You’ll be using your mower a lot, so look for an advanced

ergonomic design, such as with the Exmark Lazer Z, which takes a scientific approach to ensuring that less vibration is transferred from

Is Your Yard Wildlife Friendly?

(StatePoint) Being a good neighbor means more than being friendly to the humans across the street, it also means being friendly to the animals in your yard. Making your yard a safe place for local wildlife should be a top lawn care priority. With that in mind, here are some tips for creating a healthy habitat for local critters. Be a Valuable Rest Stop Stock your garden with small native species of trees, shrubs and flowers to give wildlife needed nourishment, as well as cover from predators. A source of water can also be a great resource for visiting fauna. Whether it’s a pond or a bird bath, be sure this zone is well-maintained so you don’t inadvertently create a

haven for unwanted species. In the warmer months when mosquitoes are most active, you should change the bird bath water even more often. Promote Safety A bird feeder in your backyard, full of water and seeds, will be the perfect invitation for beautiful migrating and local birds to stop by. Just be sure your property is safe for birds. Unfortunately, birds don’t see

clear glass. As a result, millions of birds die every year by striking glass. Don’t let your sliding glass doors or other windows become a death trap for birds. To protect birds, apply special decals that reflect ultraviolet sunlight. For example, those from WindowAlert have the appearance of frosted glass, but glow like a stoplight for birds, so you don’t have to compromise your own view out your window. The brand also makes a high-tech

liquid called WindowAlert UV Liquid, which should be applied between decals. “Wildlife can beautify your garden and be a sign that your yard is healthy” says Spencer Schock, founder of WindowAlert. “But birds and other wildlife need food, shelter, and safety.” Get out the binoculars! With a few small actions, you can make your yard or garden a wildlife refuge.

Kingsway Retirement Living Has ‘Master’ on Staff Who Can Assist Residents With Planting Needs Residents at Kingsway Retirement Living in Belle Plaine do not have to go far to get some “master advice and help when it comes to their outdoor gardening and indoor planting endeavors. In February, Kingsway Office Manager Laurie Devine of Belle Plaine completed an extensive gardening course and is currently a Master Gardener intern with CarverScott Extension Master Gardeners. She will be an intern for one year before becoming a full-grown Master Gardener within the University of Minnesota (Carver-Scott) Extension system. “I have always loved gardening and the outdoors, said Devine, explaining why she decided to enroll in the Master Gardener program. “I love to save seeds, sort them and plant them in the spring ... My lawn (grass) at home gets smaller every year because I keep adding to the gardens. Devine, a native of Chaska who moved to Belle Plaine in 2000, said she also grows some vegetables but her main gardening passion is flowers, including sunflowers, zinnias and morning glories to name a few. Devine is confident her expertise and love for growing things can rub off on residents at Kingsway and other people throughout Scott and Carver counties. In fact, that’s what a Master Gardener does. Devine said each Master Gardener brings knowledge and experience to the CarverScott Extension Master Gardener program and encourages sharing and continued learning between all members to spread out into the community.

Devine’s daughter, Katie, is also looking to become a “master at something but quite different from her mom’s endeavor. She is currently working on her master’s degree in chemistry at the University of Minnesota

said her presentation will be on feedback from Kingsway residents on the differences in gardening between the mid-1900s and today. One big difference is the scope of gardening from then to now. “During the World wars, Uncle Sam wanted everybody, urban people too, to grow big gardens because there was a shortage of vegetables, said Devine, whose late father, Jim Kerber, was one of 11 siblings and his family’s garden consisted of four acres. “Gardening for many people wasn’t just a hobby, they had to do it, Devine said. Master Gardeners in Carver and Scott counties joined together to form a unified

Kingsway Retirement Living Has ‘Master’ on Staff Who Can Assist Residents With Planting Needs (continued from page 10) group in 1987, with a total membership of five. Since those humble beginnings, the group has grown to over 100 active members. These members regularly average over 50 hours of volunteer time per year and keep busy with many annual projects. The group’s focus is “food, the environment, diversity and youth.” A few examples of volunteer hours for a Master Gardener include teaching classes at libraries for community education, assisting with a free yard and garden help line, manning question and answer booths at fairs and farmer markets, participating in special events at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and expos, etc. Master Gardeners also provide community garden opportunities to youth, teens, adults and senior citizens, as well as helping maintain the Extension’s teaching gardens at the Scott and Carver County fairgrounds. Joining Devine as presentday Master Gardeners from Belle Plaine and their start year are Jackie Smith (1987), Esther Tikalsky (1999), Joyce Bailey (2009) and Terri Booth (2013). Like Devine, Dan Vogel of Belle Plaine is in the intern stage of his Master Gardening career.

How to Plant Your Garden from Scratch

(StatePoint) Planting a garden from scratch can sound like a daunting task, especially for those who are new to the hobby. But with the right knowledge, you can plan a successful, fruitful green space and expect to have a great harvest. One way to get a head start on your garden is to start your seedlings indoors and then transplant them later into an outdoor garden. This time-tested technique can save you hundreds of dollars annually, as young plants at a nursery can be pricey. Here are some tips and tricks to make the most of this method: • Don’t start your indoor plants too soon. They can grow in about four weeks or less if you use a highquality garden starter. Check seed packages to learn when to plant outdoors in your area, and then start them indoors one

month earlier to your transplanting date outdoors. • Consider using a seedstarting system that takes some of the gardening guesswork out of the equation. For example, the Aerogarden Seed Starting system allows you to start up to 66 seedlings indoors with no dirt or mess, nurturing seeds with optimal amounts of water and nutrients for reliable germination and healthy growth. • Add new nutrients to the seedlings every two weeks and keep the water at full

level. Feeding your plants more than the recommended amount will not make them grow faster. In fact, it could hurt the plants.

How to Plant

(continued from page 12) • Before transplanting, seedlings need to be hardened off. Skipping this step will almost certainly result in some or all of your plants dying. Hardening off seedlings eases their transition to the outdoors, where they will be exposed to the elements. The process involves gradually exposing plants to the outdoors, protecting them from full sunlight, temperature variations and wind.

Spring 2015 Farm, Home & Garden • Don’t let sprouts get too big before transplanting them outdoors. Ideally they should be about 4-6 inches tall. If possible, wait to plant your seedlings on a cool, cloudy day. If your seedlings get too large before weather will allow transplanting outdoors, transplant them into small pots with high quality potting soil. Keep fully watered in a sunny space until weather permits transplanting outdoors. • After transplanting seed-

lings outdoors, be sure to water them daily for the first two weeks, especially if the weather is dry and sunny. • Save and reuse your seed starter tray for the next season. Once the spring plants have been transplanted outdoors, you will be free to get a head start on your summer crop. More tips to start your own seedlings can be found at www.Aerogarden.com. Five Top Home Improvements that Raise Your Home’s Resale Value (StatePoint) Before you decide on a home improvement project, it’s a good idea to learn which ones will help raise your house’s value and recoup the most money when you decide to sell. From replacing your front door to adding a deck, there are many midrange improvements that won’t cost a bundle but will deliver great bang for your buck.

It’s not about spending the most money; it’s about improvements that best hold their value. The experts at “Remodeling” magazine recently released their 28th annual Cost vs. Value Report, comparing construction costs with resale value for 36 of the most popular home improvement projects. When

• Steel Entry Door Replacement: The 20-Gauge Steel Entry Door has consistently delivered the best return on investment for resale, holding the top spot in the midrange product category since its debut in this report in 2009/2010. The steel entry door is the only project that, on a national basis, more than pays back its investment, typically recouping 101.8 percent. At ProVia, for example, the company’s Legacy Steel Entry Doors are a consistent top sales performer. • Manufactured Stone Veneer: A new project on this year’s report is the installation of manufactured stone veneer on home exteriors. This category zoomed to the top of the midrange list, grabbing second place with a 92.2 percent cost-value return. Increased product demand for Heritage Stone is a reflection

of this trend, observed by Wengerd and others. • Garage Door Replacement: The installation of new foursection garage doors on galvanized steel tracks proved to be a valuable project with homeowners recouping 88.4 percent of their costs. • Vinyl Siding Replacement: Replacing a home’s vinyl siding was one of a handful of projects that jumped up the list for recouping improvement costs. So not only can new vinyl siding beautify a home, it can keep it weatherproof and enhance its resale value. • Deck Addition: Adding a wooden deck can do more than provide a place to

Common Sense Upgrades to Make Your Bathroom Safer (StatePoint) From burns to slips to trips, bathrooms can be hazardous. In fact, hundreds of thousands of injuries occur in the bathroom annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Hot water can be a dangerous bathroom peril. More than half a million scald burns occur in the U.S. annually according to the CDC. Prevent “shower shock” by setting your water heater at a maximum of 120 degrees F. One of the most potentially dangerous bathroom activities is getting in and out of the bathtub safely. Grab bars, hand grips or tub grips around your bathtub

or shower can help you keep your balance. And these days, safety features don’t need to look drab or institutional. Brands like Moen are making such fixtures available in a variety of styles and finishes to complement bathroom décor. More information can be found at www. Moen.com. Lastly, women who shave in the shower need to be extra careful. Avoid slips with a shower seat. To make this a practical option, use a handheld showerhead to maneuver water easily from a seated position. With a few safety updates, you can make your bathroom a safer place to pamper and prep.

What to Know Before You Replace Your Home’s Siding (StatePoint) Whether you’re building a home from scratch or contemplating an upgrade, when choosing siding, there’s a lot more to consider beyond color. The type of material you use can impact durability, beauty and even energy efficiency. Since siding is a long-term investment, you’ll want to make a decision from an informed place, especially with more options now available in the marketplace. With that in mind, here are some things to consider about different siding materials: Weather Extreme weather events, including high winds and hot and cold temperatures can damage or destroy siding. Look for a product that is certified to withstand these conditions. No matter where you live, this should be an important consideration, as weather patterns have be-

come more unpredictable across the country. Rot Fiber-based materials (such as fiber cement planks) absorb water, which over time can make siding more prone to rot, decay and even disintegration. At the store, ask to see siding options made of polymer-based materials, which are impervious to moisture. Environmental Impact For improved energy efficiency, choose insulated siding, which will prevent undue loss of warm air in winter and cool air in summer. Where environmental impact is concerned, vinyl is a good bet, as it complies with environmen-

The Original polyvinyl fence.

COUNTRY ESTATE FENCE outperforms traditional fencing products and PVC imitators

tal standards known as LEED and ICC 700 National Green Building standards. Maintenance A certain amount of upkeep will be required to keep your siding looking great. However, vinyl siding requires only occasional soap and water, whereas fiber cement requires re-caulking and repainting to maintain color and help prevent moisture absorption. First introduced in the 1960s, vinyl siding is the most popular home siding material today, due to its overall low cost, easy installation, durability and minimal

maintenance. New products are particularly versatile, and easy to install and maintain, such as Heartland Siding by ProVia. Their super polymer vinyl siding comes in a number of styles, colors and price points. Additionally, the energy efficiency of the company’s CedarMAX line can help you save money down the line. Create a Healthy Ecosystem in Your Own Yard (StatePoint) This spring season, help promote a healthy ecosystem by learning to identify and control damaging plants and insects in your yard. Information about common invasive species and backyard invaders is now being offered by Responsible Industry for a Sound Environment (RISE): Invasive Plants Invasive weeds can out-compete native species, changing the local ecosystem. Many varieties, first introduced as flora to plant in gardens, can be confused with similar, native varieties. Here are two common damaging ones to watch out for: • Purple Loosestrife, native to Europe and Asia, is found in most states. One plant can produce more than two million seeds annually. • Native to China, the Treeof-Heaven was widely planted as an ornamental plant for many years and is often confused with other trees having similar leaves, such as black walnut, butternut, and most sumac. Invasive Insects Invasive insects can also have a severe negative impact on native species by outcompeting them for food and resources. Many also cause and carry disease and prey on native species. Two common ones to look out for include: • Emerald Ash Borer, native to Asia, is prominently found across the Northeast, Midwest, and Southeastern United States. The larvae do the most damage, killing ash trees by feeding on the inner bark. • Zebra Mussel, native to lakes in southern Russia, is found in hundreds of waterways throughout the United States. The species commonly clog water intakes, damage boats, and can cause cuts and scrapes if they grow on rocks, swim rafts, and ladders.

Backyard Pests Did you know native plants and insects can cause damage too? • Ticks can transmit Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Left untreated, Lyme disease infects the joints, heart, and nervous system. After time spent outdoors, check for ticks, especially in and around your ears, inside your belly button, behind your knees, around your waist, on your scalp, and in your hair. • Mosquitoes can carry West Nile Virus. While most people may show few symptoms, 20 percent of people develop a fever along with headaches, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Follow the “five Ds” to protect yourself: Drain standing water; Stay indoors at Dusk

• Poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac can lurk in backyards. Almost 85 percent of people develop a rash when they come into contact with these weeds. Control poisonous weeds long-term by carefully digging out the plants while wearing waterproof gloves

or treating with a pesticide. Defend your local ecosystem by identifying exotic plants in your garden or yard. Spot invasive weeds and insects in your area? Let your county extension office know, which may have a monitoring and management program in place.

Upgrade Your Fireplace to Improve Energy Efficiency (StatePoint) Heating and cooling your home typically comprises nearly half of the average American’s utility bill, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Unfortunately, a portion of that expenditure is lost. While most homeowners know that insulating, patching and weatherizing can reduce heat loss, there is one major energy eater in your home that you may not have considered -- that charming staple of dens, family rooms and anywhere people gather: the fireplace. Traditional masonry style wood-burning fireplaces are a leading source of indoor air loss and draft, even more so than windows and doors. “Traditional wood fireplaces have a lot of charm, but unfortunately, they can be inefficient even when they aren’t in use,” says Becky Scribner, brand director at Heat & Glo, a leading manufacturer of gas and wood fireplaces, stoves and inserts. However, you don’t need to sacrifice your fire this winter to lower your bill -- in fact, it’s possible to convert your fireplace into an energy efficient heat source with the following tips: • Don’t send your hard earned money up and out the chimney. When your fireplace is not in use, make sure your chimney damper is closed. You may also install a flue sealer, which is an affordable, inflatable stopper that fits below the damper to further seal off the chimney. • Ensure your chimney and fireplace is inspected, maintained and cleaned annually. A contractor can ensure the job is done safely and thoroughly. • Add doors or a cover to the front of your fireplace

to help reduce the draft and add a nice aesthetic. • Consider a gas fireplace insert. In addition to lowering your energy bills and generating more radiant heat, they’re cleaner to maintain -- no ash, soot, or smoke -- and are low maintenance, turning on and off with the flip of a switch. Plus, a new insert like the Escape from Heat & Glo looks great and uses energysaving firebox technology to increase efficiency. Learn more about the benefits of a gas fireplace insert at www. heatnglo.com/Rekindle. • For those who love the smell, crackle and process of building a real fire, don’t despair. Pellet and EPA-certified wood inserts can be an easy, clean and efficient alternative as well. In the pursuit of energy-efficiency, don’t say goodbye to tradition. Instead, give

your fireplace a much need-

ed upgrade.

Turn Your Bathroom into a Relaxing Oasis (StatePoint) Time spent in the bathroom can be precious, as it may be your only solo time. When prioritizing home upgrades, consider first transforming a ho-hum, conventional bathroom into an oasis of comfort, style and ultimate relaxation. Relax Replace outdated fixtures with new top-quality options that offer greater functionality. Manufacturers such as Mansfield Plumbing, produce fixtures and fittings designed to work in tandem. Such “suites” of a toilet, sink and bathtub can improve the look of a bathroom setting. In a toilet, there are certain features to seek. A SmartHeight toilet allows for easier access. For those who are environmentally conscious or looking for a pocketbookfriendly option, seek out a WaterSense rated toilet, signifying greater water conservation. When it comes to relaxation, the bathtub is king. Luckily, manufacturers are innovating features to go beyond whirlpools. New bathtub offerings include chromatherapy mood light systems, thermotherapy

heated backrests and in-line heaters that keep water heated perfectly. Explore your options at www.Mansfieldplumbing.com. Retreat Make your bathroom the perfect retreat from the rest of the house and the outside world with a few stylish accents that provide greater solitude. Beauty On a limited budget you can give the bathroom an elegant long-term facelift by investing in millwork products that resist humidity so you don’t experience warping. From crown moulding to trim around showers and bathtubs to ceiling medallions, polyurethane is a more practical material than traditional wood for these design elements. It’s lightweight, easy to install, and most importantly, designed to resist the humidity of bathing. To get the look of a luxury hotel, the experts at Fypon, which produce thousands of pieces of polyurethane millwork, moulding and trim in a variety of architectural styles, recommend a few project ideas: • Install a set of pilasters on

both sides of your shower stall and a door crosshead overhead to upgrade your bathroom’s look. • Surround mirrors and decorative accent windows with painted or stained polyurethane mouldings that complement the room. • Install chair rail moulding around the bathroom to add dimension. Paint above or below the moulding and use wallpaper, paneling or a different color paint in the other section. Find more project ideas at www.Fypon.com. While many think of the bathroom as a place to take care of necessary business, you can easily give yours an upgrade that will transform it into a whole lot more.

Straw Bales Help Make Gardening More Accessible By Wess McConville Everybody loves garden fresh flowers and vegetables. But not everybody, whether it’s through a lack of quality soil, availability of space, physical capability, or some other factor has the opportunity to grow a garden. There are options, however: straw bale gardening, for example. A method perfected out of necessity by Joel Karsten, straw bale gardening removes many of the barriers people face when growing a garden. “You don’t have any of last year’s disease problems that may be harboring in your soil, you don’t have any insect problems that carry over, the straw bale is raised above the ground, and the big one, you don’t have any weed seeds. Karsten began straw bale gardening shortly after buying his first home. “I noticed they left me about one inch of topsoil to garden. Being just out of college and buying a new house, I didn’t have a lot of money to buy a raised bed garden. Karsten then thought back to his days of growing up on a dairy farm in rural Worthington and how weeds grew from the straw bales left beside the barn. “So I decided to try and use bales of straw, just like that used to lay against the barn. I tried growing peppers and tomatoes and did a bunch of experimenting over a couple of seasons and really perfected the method of how to do it and that’s how I’ve been gardening ever since. There is more to straw bale gardening then sticking a tomato plant inside the bale. Fertilizer and water need to be added to it for about two weeks, which starts the composting process. Karsten, who wrote the book “Straw Bale Gardens, available at www.strawbalegardens.

com, explains. “People make an assumption that you’re growing plants in a straw bale, but the reality is it’s not really straw, says Karsten. Because by the time you’re planting two weeks into the process, you’ve given the bacteria inside that bale a source of nitrogen. The bacteria saturate and colonize the bale and consume the

straw. Through that process, it’s becoming brand new soil in a short amount of time. The composting straw heats the bale and allows for earlier planting. “Now we’re going to plant in this brand new, virgin soil in the straw bale and there’s lots of advantages: it’s nice and warm inside that bale, which is huge, especially for

us northern gardeners. So instead of waiting for the soil to warm up at the end of May or beginning of June, you can plant at the beginning of May and the tomatoes feel like it’s the middle of June in that straw bale. For more information on straw bale gardening and to purchase Karsten’s book “Straw Bale Gardens visit www.strawbalegardens.com.

Make Your Home the Envy of the Neighborhood (StatePoint) You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but you can judge a home by its exterior. Making your home the envy of the neighborhood starts with boosting its curb appeal. From general maintenance to home upgrades, here are three ideas to refresh your home’s look: Update Windows Replacing your windows with beautifully designed products will give your home a great first impression, not to mention reduce your energy bills and increase your home’s value. After a window replacement, taking care of your new window is just as important. Wash windows every few months so they always look as good as the day they were installed. Avoid scratching the surface of the glass, or frame, by utilizing non-abrasive agents. Water and a soft cloth is usually all you need to clean windows thoroughly, but a mild cleaner may also be helpful. Choose Sleek Siding If you are looking to boost your home’s energy efficiency and attain a new look for your exterior, replacing your siding is a great investment

that can achieve both of these goals. Just be sure you get a superior product to avoid maintenance down the line. For example, vinyl siding is an ideal product because of its low maintenance and longevity. No matter what color siding you opt for, you can make your entire home’s ex-

terior pop by choosing a distinct trim color. Use a complimentary online design center, like the one on the Window World website, to help visualize color options for windows, siding and doors. While there, check out their full-line of ENERGY STAR

In addition to offering stylish siding, Window World also professionally installs the Prodigy Insulated Siding System, which is both moisture and impact-resistant. The Prodigy system has the thickest EPS foam insulation on the market, helping you increase comfort while decreasing energy consumption. A Grand Entry It is said that the front door is the focal point of your home’s curb appeal. When creating your entryway, customize a new front door with smaller side window panels or glass panels within the door itself. Look for an exterior remodeler that can cus-

Caring for a Freshly Sodded Lawn Sod, sometimes called turf, can quickly turn a barren landscape into a rich, thick carpet of green. Homeowners hoping to revive their lawns commonly turn to sod as the quickest means to do just that. However, once the sod has been laid down, few homeowners may know how to keep it looking its best. Sod is real grass that is grown on special farms. It is generally grown locally to avoid long transport times that could dry out the product. Sod is typically sold in squares or rolls of grass that come with the roots and soil already attached. There may be some sort of thin backing material on the sod to keep the grass blades together. Many homeowners turn to sod when growing lawn from

Sod can create an instant lawn, but it still requires certain maintenance measures to get it firmly established. seed becomes problematic or too time-consuming. Seeds can be blown around in the wind or be eaten by birds and other animals before they have a chance to germinate. Sodding a lawn is a major investment, costing as much as $1 per two-foot square. Depending on the size of your lawn, this can be a costly job even before adding the cost of additional supplies, such as soil, fertilizer and tilling equipment. Many homeowners who install sod want to ensure their investment lasts. Here are the main ways to care for and protect sod until it is fully established. * Once the sod has been laid down, the lawn should be thoroughly soaked with Norwood water. Keep the lawn height to around two inches to ensure that it won’t scald in the sun. * After two months of established sod growth, aerate the sod to keep the soil from being too compact and to enable oxygen and nutrients to get into the soil. * Keep children and pets off of the sod while it is establishing itself. * Fertilize the lawn every 50 to 60 days, beginning in March and ending in October. * Inspect the sod for pests, which may include insects or problems like fungi or weeds. Did you Know?

Damage to a lawn may be indicative of various problems. Everything from insects to rodents to the family pet may be responsible for causing burnt patches, holes and other eyesores. Getting to the bottom of the problem is the first step in remediation. Burning and discoloration of the lawn is often a result of high concentrations of dog urine pooling in one area. Diluting the urine by hosing down areas of the lawn can clear up many problems. Birds, raccoons, skunks, moles, and other rodents may feed on grubs that reside just under the thatch of the lawn, and animals may tear up lawns in search of this delicacy. Treating the grub problem usually alleviates damage caused by animals. Mole crickets are another common lawn destroyer. These insects resemble crickets, but they burrow beneath the turf to feed on plant roots. The mole crickets can push up channels of turf as they burrow, exposing roots to the elements and causing the grass to die. Getting rid of the insects canrevitalize the lawn.

How to Prevent Soil Erosion

Homeowners who spend time tending to their landscape are increasingly looking eco-friendly ways to maintain their lawns and gardens. Homeowners who once relied on potentially harmful pesticides to craft a lush lawn now prefer ways that don’t leave such a

significant carbon footprint. Preventing soil erosion is one way to incorporate conservation into lawn and garden care. Conservation is one of many environmental practices aimed at preserving the planet’s natural resources, which include soil. Preventing

How to Prevent Soil Erosion (continued from page 29) * Don’t overwater. Some may assume that keeping soil as damp as possible keeps it healthy. However, overwatering the soil can cause runoff that washes the soil away. In addition, overwatering the soil can degrade it and contribute to erosion. Instead of overwatering, keep the soil moist but don’t overdo it. If you’re having trouble keeping soil

moist, consider laying down some mulch, which helps retain moisture and deliver nutrients to the soil that keep it healthy. * Plant trees and shrubs. Trees and shrubs are friends to soil, providing shelter while their roots keep the soil in place and prevent it from easily blowing away on a windy day. It also helps soil from washing away when warm weather arrives and the landscape must be watered on a daily basis. * Create runoff barriers. Runoff barriers are edges that can be made of brick, stone or other materials that help

reduce runoff. Many homeowners install runoff barriers along sidewalks and driveways to ensure the soil does not spill out onto the pavement, but these also help the soil as much as they help to keep walkways and other areas free of soil and looking tidy. * Consider leaving some grass around the garden. Tillage is the process of preparing land to grow crops. While many homeowners don’t view their weekend gardening as growing crops, similar principles apply whether you’re growing crops on a farm or just a few vegetables in the backyard.

One such principle is conservation tillage, which means leaving a portion of vegetation in the ground instead of stripping everything away before planting. For home gardeners, consider leaving a small amount of grass around the garden to keep the soil within the garden’s boundaries. It’s a principle similar to installing runoff barriers, and it can be just as effective at preventing soil erosion. Installing runoff barriers made of brick, stone or other materials around plants and shrubs is one way to reduce soil erosion and runoff.
