Like Smith, Ladd and Heine are coming off two-year wage freezes. The district bases contract settlements for its other employee groups on its largest bargaining group, the teachers’ union. Earlier this year, the Belle Plaine Education Association and school district agreed to a 4.3 percent increase over two years, a settlement that included money for additional experience and education. Ladd, Heine and Sparby do not benefit from the same schedule. Smith, who is entering the third year of a three-year pact, reminded the board his threeyear contract is open for negotiation on a wage for the third year. He’s looking for a wage increase that is fair to both the district and himself. Smith said he’ll focus on contracts for Ladd, Heine and Sparby before focusing on his contract.
Correction The June 13 Herald reported that a tornado damaged the Mike Krentz farm. It was the Richard Krentz farm. It was also reported that a silo on the farm was damaged. It was a grain storage bin.

Storm Damage (continued from page 1) 1986 when a trailer fire a short distance away killed two family members – Chris’ brothers James, 16, and Charlie, 11. Chris’ sister, Judy Nelson, stopped by to see Tuesday’s damage and to visit with her brother and mother. Judy said she couldn’t help but think of that tragic day when two of her brothers were killed so close by. She showed the large scars on her arm and lower leg she received in that fire. Chris, who said he is on disability, said he’s pretty certain his home “is totaled.” He added that a representative from the insurance company is expected to come out and inspect the damage soon. In the meantime, Chris said he plans to stay with a friend across the street from his damaged home. Shirley will be staying with daughter Judy. A statement from the Red Cross to the Herald on Tuesday stated: “The American Red Cross is assisting two adults following a storm-related incident in which a tree fell on a mobile home in the 600 block of West Forest Street in Belle Plaine.” According to a press release from the city of Belle Plaine, approximately 50 “large” trees were down due to Tuesday morning’s storm, and multiple residential power lines were damaged. No injuries were reported. “All city streets have been made passable and clean-up has begun,” stated the press release. The city wants to remind homeowners that they are responsible for the removal of downed and damage trees from their property.
“Please contact your homeowner’s insurance for direction,” continued the press release. “The Belle Plaine Public Works Department will pick up branches placed on the boulevard for removal. Branches larger than 3 inches in diameter will not be accepted. Branches and debris are not to be hauled to the compost site. We ask that residents be patient during the clean-up process.”
