A construction crew hit a line. The line was capped. Friday, Aug. 10 Firefighters responded at 10:11 a.m. to a call for medical help from a person on the 900 block of Riverview Lane. At 11:23 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a call for medical help from a person on the 18100 block of Kelly Lake Road.

They’d prefer to park along Meridian Street. The traffic volume on East Main Street makes stopping cars to back in a challenge. They’d like to see more enthusiasts bring their classics downtown. Ideally, they’d like to see the Belle Plaine shows expand to the level of participation Henderson enjoys Tuesday evenings. The shows are a boon to downtown business. “They get 200 cars,” Fahey said. The largest fish that was not a flathead ($50) was caught by Jeff Eddleston of Jordan. It was a 12-pound, 4-ounce channel cat. The contest record flathead (51 pounds, 12 ounces) was caught by Tony Bentz of Belle Plaine in 2003. The state record for a flathead is a 70-pounder caught in the St. Croix River (Washington County) in 1970. The world record is a 123-pounder caught in Elk City Reservoir, Kan., in 1998. Following Saturday’s weighin deadline came the traditional keg throwing and tobacco spitting contests. The men’s top keg heaver was Tyler Nyberg of Belle Plaine. The best throw by a woman was turned in by Kari Hodges of Arlington. Jake Bartlett of Cologne won the tobacco spitting contest. Partial proceeds from the Minnesota River Fishin’ Contest go to Belle Plaine area youth outdoor training programs.

Seeking Public’s Help, Area Man Feeling Kicked When He’s Down An area man is looking for help from anybody who has seen or heard of his stolen fish house and offering a $500 reward for information leading to its recovery and the conviction of the thief(ves). The fish house was taken from Kocina’s business in New Prague – Tri-County Beverage – last Tuesday (Aug. 7) while Ron and Kathy (Meger) Kocina were in Rochester visiting their hospitalized son, Tom, 31. He was severely injured in a motorcycle crash just before 1 a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 7) south of Montgomery. He was airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester and remains hospitalized

with severe head injuries and several broken bones, Ron said. “The pain of what happened to Tom is very hard to deal with but the person who stole the fish house infuriates us,” Kocina said. Kocina sold a portion of his business to spend more time with his 10 grandchildren, three of which are Tom’s children.
