Scott, Carver Commissioners OK Merger of Transit Services
Belle Plaine area residents on both the Scott and Carver county sides of the Minnesota River now have the same transit provider available to them. Scott and Carver counties officially merged their transit providers earlier this month. In a joint meeting Dec. 3, the two county boards passed their respective motions to merge their transit service into SmartLink. The two counties have operated a joint service for four years. The action earlier this month makes the merger official.
According to its web site, SmartLink provides dial-a-ride, medical disability transportation, rides to appointments. SmartLink Transit can get riders anywhere in the seven county metro area. In some cases, riders may need to transfer to other transportation provider. The service is based out of the transit hub at the junction of Highway 169 and Marschall Road in Shakopee, the former Denny Hecker auto dealership. The merger has increased efficiency, allowing more rides at
reduced fees. Customer Service is available weekdays, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. SmartLink Transit buses operate Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Funding for the services comes from rider fees, state dollars and money allocated through the Metropolitan Council, said Scott County Administrator Gary Shelton. Waconia Board Says Kindergarten Will Be Full Day, Not Half Despite the impassioned pleas of a group of parents that want the Waconia School District to maintain its half-day kindergarten option, the school district will only offer the full-day program next year. The Waconia School Board recently OK’d the full day option as funded by the Minnesota Legislature. Before granting the approval for all-day kindergarten, the board surveyed about 300 families to determine the amount of interest and preference for half- or full-day kindergarten. Only 17 families indicated a preference for halfday kindergarten in 2014-15, the Waconia Patriot recently reported. A few parents supported the half-day option, but only if they could select a specific teacher or school). The board told parents opposed to full-day kindergarten they had the option of using a private preschool facility. They could wait to the following year to start their child in kindergarten or enroll their child in fullday kindergarten and pick the child up before the end of the day. The Minnesota Legislature will fund full-day kindergarten beginning next year (2013-14). The Belle Plaine School District has self-funded full-day kindergarten since the 2006’07 school year as a tool to keep more kindergarten students in town rather than leaving the community via open enrollment.
