Pool

(continued from page 1) wanted to know what my summer plans were,” she said. The pool is scheduled to open, weather permitting, Friday at 1 p.m. Hillstrom is accustomed to spending time around children. She’s taught school since graduating from the University of St. Thomas three years ago. Next fall, she’ll teach at Buffalo Community Middle School. “I honestly thought, what else am I going to do,” she said. “You come back to where you are comfortable. This was my first real job.” At 25, Hillstrom knows the operation well. She’s worked at the pool as a lifeguard for eight summers. Growing up in Belle Plaine, she and her friends were regulars, among the children who couldn’t wait until 1 p.m. each day for the door to open. “I learned to swim here, too,” she said. As a manager, Hillstrom is charged with “improving the quality of the experience” pool visitors enjoy, said City Administrator David Murphy. She has an array of ideas at the ready, from increased lap swim hours to water aerobics classes and time set aside for family swimming (especially on weekends). Other plans include a cookout one night a month.

‘One of the Best Deals Around’

“This pool has so much potential,” she said. “I want people to appreciate what they have here. We’re probably one of the best deals around.” The pool is open 1-5 p.m. and 6 until dusk. The entry fee is $3 for children 5 and older. Fahey enjoys Hillstrom’s enthusiasm for making the pool a more enjoyable venue, but balances it against the available funding. They’d love to be able to one day afford, for example, a climbing wall above the water. But that’s an idea that will have to survive budget discussions, he said. Long-term expansion plans are linked to the availability of the tennis courts to the west and the school district’s building plans. Fahey said the additional services, like the cookout, are “one of the things we give back to the community.” Because the municipal pool isn’t intended to turn a profit for the city, he wants to see it well utilized. Like Hillstrom, Fahey knows the Belle Plaine Municipal Pool is the envy of area residents that don’t have one in their towns. It is a popular destination for people visiting from the nearby communities, he said. Hillstrom has turned to her lifeguards for ideas as well, figuring they know the operation and here what people are talking about during their visits. She welcomes phone calls (873-2333) and e-mails -- pool@ci.belleplaine.mn.us - from residents with questions, suggestions or concerns. “I don’t have all the right answers. I work with some amazing people with some very good ideas,” she said. The pool manager will fill a leadership void among the staff. Without an on-site manager, decisions were not always made quickly or seamlessly, she said. There will be times, Hillstrom knows, when the number of swimmers is such that the pool is over-staffed and one or more of the lifeguards needs to be sent home early. She knows that’s not always a popular decision. “I’m a teacher. I deal with kids all the time,” she said. “I was teaching 18-year-olds when I was 22.” As one of the most senior lifeguards, she is complimentary of the city workers who take care of the pool. As a manager, she knows her boss and his crew are a phone call away, even if they are needed to remove, say, a dead mouse from a skimmer, sunfish or frogs from the bottom of the pool. While they live in or near water, sunfish and the small web-footed creatures apparently don’t tolerate chlorine for long. “There’s been a lot of interesting things throw in over the years,” she said.

enth inning as the Tigers won in walk-off fashion 1-0 over NYA in the second round of the section playoffs last Tuesday evening at Tiger Park. Jacob Meger pitched the complete-game shutout for Belle Plaine. “Jacob threw a great game. He totally dominated their hitters and only allowed two past first base all game,” said Belle Plaine coach Pat Schultz. “Our defense played errorless ball and made a ton of big plays. This was a very exciting, wellplayed ball game.” Juaire and Derek Dahlke both had two hits for the Tigers, while Nick Eliason, Matt Ruehling and Jordan Johnson each had one. Tigers 8, Holy Family 5 The Tigers smothered the topseeded Fire early with seven runs through the first three innings and then held on for the 8-5 victory. “We really came out ready to play this game, scoring four runs in the first on four hits, two walks and two Holy Family errors,” Schultz said. Five more hits and two walks through the second and third innings allowed Belle Plaine to build a 7-0 cushion. “Trevor Latzke (pitching) did a very nice job preserving the lead for us and battled through six innings, allowing only three earned runs against the No. 1ranked team in the state,” Schultz said. “Our defense played another outstanding game with only one error and some very nice plays. Dahlke came on in relief in the seventh with a couple of guys on base and did a great job slamming the door with two strikeouts to preserve a huge win for our team.” Dahlke was 4-for-4 with a double, walk and two runs scored. He also knocked in a run. Latzke added two hits and two RBI, while Juaire had two hits, two walks, two runs and two RBI. Ruehling and Johnson both had one RBI. Austen Bahr and Eliason added one hit apiece. LS-H 3, Tigers 2 It appeared early as though the Tigers’ postseason magic in the first three games would carry over into the weekend as they took a 2-0 lead after three innings over LS-H, the top seed from the South Subsection. However, the Giants tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, which eventually sent the contest into extra innings. The Tigers recorded the first two outs in the bottom of the ninth before an error and what Schultz described as “two questionable calls” allowed LS-H to get the winning run across the plate.

“This was a very tough game for the boys to lose. The emotional swing of thinking they were heading to the 10th inning to the season suddenly being over was tough to overcome and unfortunately carried into the next game against Holy Family,” Schultz said. Dahlke pitched what Schultz called “seven great innings,” allowing five hits and striking out 11. Schultz added that Meger also pitched very well in two innings of relief. “We played well defensively for the most part but all three of our errors were costly and led to all three runs being unearned,” Schultz said. Jack Winders and Nick Eliason both had two hits for the Tigers, while Cameron Klehr, Juaire and Latzke had the others. Klehr scored both of Belle Plaine’s runs. Holy Family 11, Tigers 0 Belle Plaine’s hangover from the difficult loss to the Giants was felt in the next game as Holy Family gained revenge and them some by clubbing the Tigers in a game that was stopped in the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule. “This was not a good game for us and a tough way to end the season. It was not indicative of how well the boys played the last month of the season,” Schultz said. “Holy Family came out aggressive with the bats and took advantage of our defensive miscues and errors. We could not get anything going offensively. Meger came out and battled early but a couple errors hurt him, and after throwing a couple of innings earlier in the day, the extra pitches got to him. Jack Winders came in and did nice job in relief.” The Fire scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning before blowing the game open with eight more in the third. Latzke and Cody Ekstrom accounted for Belle Plaine’s only two hits. “The team really stepped up

the second half of the regular season and especially in the playoffs to make a very nice run highlighted by the walk-off win against Norwood Young America and the huge win over the No. 1-ranked team in the state, Holy Family,” Schultz said. “A lot of guys really stepped up in the playoffs. Latzke, Meger and Dahlke all threw very well for us – and a lot of guys were swinging the bats very well as of late, but Juaire, Latzke and Dahlke really helped lead us, going a combined 16-for-32 in the playoffs.” Playing their final high school game for the Tigers were seniors Ruehling, Latzke, Luke Schmidt, Sam Mellgren, Ekstrom, Bahr and Guertin. “I want to thank them for all their hard work and contributions to the program,” Schultz said. Man Charged in Fatal Crash The Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Office reports that criminal charges have been filed against Coy Charles Hewitt, 35, of Fairfax. The charges stem from a fatal, single-vehicle accident that occurred on Le Sueur County Road 45 in Kasota Township on Feb. 12 at 2:50 a.m. The vehicle went off the roadway on a curve in the road and had direct impact with a tree. Both alcohol and speed were determined to be a factor in the crash.

Coy Hewitt was determined to be the driver of the vehicle, in which all five occupants, including himself, were transported by either air or ground ambulances to various area hospitals. One of the occupants, Elizabeth Risk, 21, was later pronounced dead at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. Hewitt has been charged with one count of vehicular homicide and three counts of criminal vehicular injury. His first court appearance is set for July 10 in Le Sueur County District Court.
