He was proud of the success the dealership and its staff earned and proud of the impact the dealership’s contributions had on students from his hometown. “It’s basically where your roots are. We received a lot of support from Belle Plaine. The cars were a way to say thanks,” Moody said after winning the award. He noted two of his top staffers at Friendly Chevrolet Dale Schmitt and Terry Murphy were also Belle Plaine natives. Along the way, Moody, Fred and Paul Keup from Keup Motors in Belle Plaine started alternating the annual donation of cars for Dollars for Scholars. “A college education is so important. It’s important that we help these kids get started in college,” Moody said. Today, Matt Saxe Chevrolet Buick donates vehicles for the raffle.
Road to the Top After his discharge from the U.S. Navy, Moody returned to Belle Plaine and worked as a heavy equipment operator in road construction throughout the state until November of 1968. In January of 1969, he started selling new cars and trucks at Southdale Ford, moved into management after a couple of years and worked for a couple of Chevrolet dealerships in the Twin Cities. After 21 years of learning the trade in a very competitive market, Moody got his big break. In the fall of 1991, Moody bought Viking Chevrolet in Fridley and changed the dealership’s name to Friendly Chevrolet. He credits General Motors’ confidence in him, the financial strength of GMAC financial, and a handful of key managers for the company’s early success. He opened the doors of Friendly Chevrolet with about 30 employees and 130 new and used cars, trucks and vans. Sixteen years later to the day, he sold Friendly Chevrolet Sept. 21, 2007 with 130 employees and over 800 new and used cars, trucks and vans. Before leaving the auto business, General Motors named Moody its Dealer of the Year, an award for which he was selected from over 6,000 General Motors dealers as recipient of the General Motors’ Jack Smith Award. Time Magazine honored Moody with its “Quality Dealer Award” for Minnesota. Through the years he has supported a number of charities besides Dollars for Scholars, efforts that include support for Toys for Tots, Salvation Army, Red Cross, Belle Plaine Food Shelf and others. Roger was married and had a son, Jarrett, who passed away in July of 2007. He has two grandsons - Jackson (15) and Peter Moody (12) who both live in Champlin. His older brother, Robert, younger sister, Mary, all grew up and attended school in Belle Plaine. Roger and his significant other, Leslie Scott, reside in Fountain Hills, Ariz., or at a cabin northern Minnesota. “I still get back to Belle Plaine, but not as often as I’d like,” he said. Today, Moody Enterprises that provides some consulting in the auto business. He recently sold his interest in Valley View Golf Club in Belle Plaine but still enjoys playing golf. Much of his free time is dedicated to hunting, fishing, playing golf or traveling.

Saturday, June 1 Vandalism at Heritage Park on the 500 block of East Orchard Street was discovered at 10:11 p.m. Sunday, June 2 A domestic dispute on the 100 block of East Church Street was reported at 7:58 a.m. Two brothers were cited, one for fifth-degree domestic assault and the other for fourth-degree domestic assault and property damage. A single vehicle propertydamage crash on Highway 169 near Meridian Avenue was reported at 1:05 p.m. A vehicle was stopped near the intersection of Highway 169 and South Ash Street at 3:10 p.m. for a speeding violation. The driver was also cited for driving with a suspended license. A woman on the 1000 block of East Enterprise Drive asked police at 7:46 p.m. to unlock a vehicle. Juveniles stopped near the intersection of East Church and North Meridian streets at 8:18 p.m. were cited for possession of tobacco.

The week of May 27-June 2, Belle Plaine firefighters responded to the following submitted calls: Wednesday, May 29 A fire alarm at the junior-senior high school sounded at 10:41 a.m. The alarm was the result of a faulty pull switch. It was repaired. Saturday, June 1 A woman on the 900 block of South Walnut Street reported at 6:17 p.m. a car engine fire. Firefighters found the engine fully engulfed in flames.
