It is up to the individual to decide when to begin receiving Social Security beneďŹ ts. A person can take a reduced beneďŹ t as early as age 62. Or, a former employee can claim a full beneďŹ t at what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Otherwise, a person can wait until age 70 for yet a larger beneďŹ t. Bear in mind that, once you elect to receive a reduced beneďŹ t, you remain at that level for the rest of your life (with normal cost-of-living increases). The longer you are apt to live, the more you beneďŹ t from waiting for the larger check. The current generation of retirees is more likely than the last generation to have active retirement years ďŹ lled with a mix of travel, sports, and education. How will you spend your retirement years, and how can you fund those years? Social Security may ďŹ ll only a limited amount of your ďŹ nancial demands. In last week’s page 1 story in the Herald about the awarding of the bid for the city’s 2017 street and utility improvement project, it stated that the Belle Plaine City Council awarded the bid for the project to Wm. Mueller & Sons of Hamburg at the low base bid of $1,098,853.01, which is almost $100,000 under the engineer’s estimate of $1,106,635.75. The math was incorrect. The approximation should have stated that the approved base bid is less than $7,800 under the city engineer’s estimate.
