Sibley County Deputy Contests Traffic Stop, Charges Against Him The attorney for Jason David Ruehling, a Sibley County sheriff’s deputy charged with the theft of drugs and trespassing, announced during an omnibus hearing Friday (Aug. 4) he is contesting the justification for a police traffic stop that led to criminal charges against his client. “The issue to contest is the probable cause of the stop, said Joseph Ditsch, Ruehling’s attorney. “The evidence was only obtained because of the stop. Ruehling pleaded not guilty to charges of possession of controlled substances which is a felony and two counts of misdemeanor trespassing at the hearing. He’ll be back in court for a contested case hearing Sept. 15, 1 p.m., Ruehling, 44, was arrested June 8 and released June 12. After he allegedly entered the sheriff’s office following his being placed on administra-

tive leave, Ruehling allegedly left the office with items in his hands, Deputy Rodney Drexler said in the criminal complaint. Drexler stated Ruehling was speeding excessively when Drexler pulled him over. He found a small plastic bag containing pills after arresting Ruehling. Ruehling’s truck was searched and a bottle of prescription drugs was found in it. The medications were labeled Clonazepam, Alprazolam and Lorazepam in the criminal complaint. Judge Jody Winters released Ruehling of his own volition Friday on the condition he follow the terms already in place and continues to abide by the law. McLeod County Attorney Michael Junge is handling the prosecution on behalf of Sibley County to avoid conflict of interest since Ruehling is employed by Sibley County. The complaint was filed only

one day prior to Ruehling’s appearance in court, making it very difficult for the prosecution to have enough time to gather evidence and provide witnesses. Junge asked for a contested hearing to be scheduled. Ditsch asked, on behalf of his client, for the hearing to take place at the McLeod County Courthouse rather than in Sibley County because of Ruehling’s position.
