Sibley County Deputy Charged With Assaulting Jailer During Escape The Sibley County sheriff’s deputy awaiting trial for possession of drugs and trespassing is now facing additional charges – assaulting a corrections officer and escape from custody. According to Sibley County Sheriff Bruce Ponath, Jason Ruehling allegedly escaped custody at the county jail after assaulting a jailer around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 23). Ruehling, who is on paid administrative leave from his job in the sheriff’s office, was taken into custody across the street. Ponath reported Friday (Aug.
25) a corrections officer was retrieving a receipt for a person who was at the jail to give a urine sample. The correctional officer failed to completely close the door between the jail and the lobby, Ponath said in a press release. Once the corrections officer was in the jail, Ruehling created a disturbance and escaped from the jail. He allegedly assaulted the jailer by biting his thumb, Ponath said. The Sibley County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident. The 44-year-old Ruehling, a
17-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, was initially charged with possession of controlled substances, a felony, and two counts of misdemeanor trespassing. He was arrested June 8 and recently rearrested for allegedly violating a restraining order. Ruehling is due back in district court Sept. 15. Attorneys from the prosecution and defense will discuss the evidence against Ruehling during a hearing. McLeod County is handling the prosecution of the drug possession charge because of Ruehling’s job with Sibley County.
