Girls’ Basketball (continued from page 13) Carlson said. “We have some tough people on this team this year and they will battle with you. BA is a very good, young, well-coached team. We made some big plays to win this thing.” Carlson was referring to Johnson hitting a big shot off a rebound to put the Tigers ahead for good late in the game, while Hayden and Narveson also hit some big shots to get Belle Plaine back in the game. He added that Alissa Schultz had an outstanding overall game and came up with a big rebound at the end. Carlson described Hayden’s performance (23 points and 19 rebounds) as “unbelievable.” “She just took it over inside for us. Overall, it was a big win and a fun night. We need to keep improving though.” Also scoring for Belle Plaine were Johnson (9), Narveson (8), Schmitz (7), Schultz (6), Weiers (4) and Kellogg (2). Johnson had eight assists and two steals. Weiers had eight rebounds, followed by Schultz and Kellogg with seven apiece.

Second Place

The Trinity Lutheran School girls’ basketball team brought home the second-place trophy on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the St. Croix Lutheran Tip-off Tournament. The Tigers defeated Rochester 35-10 and Menomonie, Wis., 37-12. Trinity lost a close game in the championship to Burnsville 44-37. Trinity was the smallest school in the tournament, but proved it has a lot of talent. Pictured in the front row, from left, are Morgan Glowicki, Erin West, Naomi Anderson and Daisy Vinkemeier. H.S. Boys’ Basketball

Tigers Fall to 0-3 by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School boys’ basketball team has not had a good start to the season. Not only has it dropped its first three games, but it is without perhaps its best player, junior Luke Narveson, for possibly six weeks. Narveson broke his thumb in a loss at Waterville on Dec. 1. Belle Plaine’s latest setback occurred at Glencoe-Silver Lake Thursday night as the Panthers defeated the Tigers 60-45. It was Belle Plaine’s third double-digit loss in as many outings. The Tigers were scheduled to host Le Sueur-Henderson in the Minnesota River Conference opener Tuesday night after this edition of the Herald went to press. Belle Plaine will also be at home 7:30 p.m. this Friday against Watertown-Mayer and 5:30 p.m. Saturday against Waseca. The Tigers will be at Blue Earth Area next Tuesday. Glencoe-SL 60, Tigers 45 For the third time in as many games, Belle Plaine tallied 47 or fewer points in a 60-45 loss Thursday night in Glencoe. Mitchel Stier was the only Tiger in double figures with 16 points. Following Stier in scoring for the Tigers were Kincade

Retzer (9), Brady Johnson (4), Derek Guscette (4), Taylor Lenz (4), Sam Gregory (3), Joe Hankins (3) and Nathan Hermann (2) “We keep improving,” insists Tigers coach John Wellner. “G-SL is one of the best teams in the section and in their conference. Our defense is improving but we are giving up too many offensive rebounds. We need to do better at finishing possessions. “Offensively, we are still a work in progress, but our efficiency is improving. Mitchel Stier played a tremendous second half and he did a great job on their leading scorer, holding him to eight points in the game. Our goal is to improve everyday and we are doing that.”

and take down to score a 12-3 major decision over Logan Wadsworth at 138. Following the two majors, one by each team, Hutchinson elected to forfeit to David Flynn at 145 and that brought to the mat Scott West freshman Tyler Buesgens at 152, who was all over his Hutchinson opponent in scoring a 17-1 technical fall at the end of just the second period. After Dylan Johnson dropped an 8-4 match to Ethan Link, Scott West sophomore Deshawn Carter came to the mat to deliver his biggest win to date as a Scott West Panther as he bettered Josh Filk 6-3 at 170. Carter’s win put the meet a way for Scott West as that put the team score at 33-7. Panther Andrew Fogarty went out and widened the gap to 39-7 with a second-period pin of Tyler Stenze at 182. Hutchinson closed the meet by winning the last three matches as senior Gregor Frazer won a 22-9 major decision over eighth-grader Calvin Menke at 195, Chandler Kurth scored a pin of Tyler Grieves at 220 and state place-winner Jake Filk brought the meet to a conclusion with a pin of Jacob Allen at heavyweight. “Hutchinson has some good upper weights,” states Ripley. “However, we are going to have to find a way to wrestle better up top if we want to truly be a successful team.” Scott West continued its early-season success as it won the team championship of the Lakeville North Invitational behind the strength of six finalists that included four individual champions. The Panthers’ performance was good enough for 177.5 team points, which bettered the 14-team field that included Eagan’s team runner-up 149 points. “Overall, we wrestled a pretty good tournament,” states Ripley. “However, while it was good to win the tournament and that was certainly our goal, I think it’s probably the lowest point total that we have ever won a regular invitational tournament with, so that should tell us that we still need to get better at a lot of weight classes.” The first four weight classes for the Panthers did just fine as all four advanced to the finals. Leading the way was 106 -pound eighth-grader Tyler Shackle as he became the sixth Panther this year to pin his way

to an invitational championship. He used a bar arm to drive Hudson’s Drew Clabon to his back for a pin fall call at 1:26. The next Scott West finalist, Ben Kelvington, had a very tough match in his championship final at 126 as he squared off against Lakeville North’s returning state champion Wade Sullivan, who won the Class 3A title last year at 113. Trailing 1-0 in the third period, Kelvington was the recipient of a penalty point to tie the match as Sullivan was whistled for a full nelson. With the match now tied at one apiece, Kelvington would slip Sullivan’s ride for what would become a matchwinning reversal as Sullivan could only muster a late escape in the 3-2 Kelvington win. “Ben wrestled a really solid match in this one and points were hard to come by,” comments Ripley. “Anytime you beat a returning state champion, that’s certainly something you can build off of.” Senior David Flynn became a four-time Lakeville North Invitational champion as he scored a convincing 9-1 major decision over a longtime foe in Woodbury’s #5 Ty Johnson in the championship finals at 138. Flynn used a series of good leg attacks to score four take downs in the championship win. Flynn’s senior teammate Andrew Fogarty won his third Lakeville North Invitational as he dominated Lakeville South’s Dalton Peterson at 170 by scoring a 15-0 technical fall with a match-ending take down right at the start of the third period. “Andrew (a returning state champion) has been making it look pretty easy so far this year,” suggests Ripley. “However, he knows that there are some potential big matches coming up and the first could come as soon as this Friday against Shakopee’s returning state champion Owen Webster as a possibility.” What was the possibility that Scott West would get a pair of finalists out of two wrestlers who would replace the designated Panther starters at 113 and 120? The answer is pretty good as Parker Huss at 113 and Brenden Mackedanz at 120 stepped in for Jackson Stauffacher and Carter Piche, who were withheld from the competition. Huss scored a “Panther Payback” right out of the shoot
