Carver County Board Mulls Age Limits on Tobacco Purchases
Considering the possibilities in joining metro area cites like Bloomington, Edina and St. Louis Park, Carver County commissioners recently discussed a proposal to restrict the age of purchasing tobacco products to 21. The commissioners discussed the proposal during a workshop, the Chaska Herald reported. So far, no other counties have enacted the proposal. The idea would be to limit the age of purchasing tobacco products to 21. The idea is to make it tougher for children to purchase tobacco, said Richard Scott, Carver County’s manager of Public Health. Adults could still legally use tobacco
at 18 years of age. Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson doesn’t expect any more difďŹ culties enforcing the proposed 21-year-old age limit than with the existing age limit. The county works with retailers and conducts compliance checks to prevent the sale of tobacco products to children. The county board is split on the proposal. Commissioners Randy Maluchnik of Chaska and Jim Ische of Hancock Township support the proposal. Commissioners Tom Workman of Chanhassen and Gayle Degler of Chaska raised concern about regulating a legal product. Commissioner Tim Lynch
of Hollywood Township is concerned Carver County’s cities could opt out of the countywide age limit, leaving the limit in place only in the county’s townships. The issue is not limited to the Carver County and west metro cities. St. Cloud city councilors have also addressed the matter. Sandra Renor, a public health education nurse with Nicollet County, presented the cities of St. Peter and Le Sueur with a petition calling for the increase in age to legally purchase tobacco. State Sen. Carla Nelson, R-Rochester, recently introduced a bill calling for the age increase.

approved property tax hike. Mayor Meyer hopes residents were well informed about the budget increase and the work the council did to minimize the city’s impact on a property owner’s tax bill. “I hope they see we’re trying to be good stewards of taxpayers’ money, he said.
Pool Provisions
Meeting in a workshop setting after the council meeting, the city council discussed the contribution it would be willing to make to the joint school district-city community center proposal. School District Superintendent Ryan Laager asked the city during a recent work session to contribute money and potential funding for a staff position to the pool operation should voters OK the construction of a community center with an indoor water park and outdoor pool. The city budgets about $225,000 for operating the existing community pool. Revenue from the pool amounts to about $55,000. The council was
seemingly willing to contribute the $170,000 to operating the pool and water park at the proposed community center. The council also indicated support for providing funding for a school district employee to operate the water park/pool. Dawn Meyer’s research indicated the range of salary and beneďŹ ts for a person to manage the aquatic park-pool ranged from $60,000 to $85,000 annually. But the potential of funding for operations comes with strings. Coop wants a long-term agreement with the district as part of the funding pact. He wants the existing fee schedule for the proposed pool facility to remain the same as the current pool for individuals and families. Coop also wants no additional fees for pool users to utilize the aquatic park. He wants the district to allow people who’ll only use the pool and aquatic park be spared the requirement of buying a community center membership. He also wants a promise the district will offer the same number of Red Cross swimming lessons at the new pool as it does at the existing community pool. Coop also wants the school district to promise it won’t close the pool without the city’s approval even if the community center closes. In other action at the Dec. 4 meeting, the Belle Plaine City Council: • Paid bills totaling $131,203.37. • Approved revisions to the city’s fee schedule. The revisions include fees for public works equipment use, water and sewer utilities, uilding permits, street lighting, special sessions, park dedication, and administrative fees. • Passed a resolution approving a building ofďŹ cial mentorship services contract with the City of New Prague. • Scheduled public interviews with ďŹ nalists for the city administrator post for Monday, Jan. 8, 9 a.m., with the following day at 9 a.m. as an alternate day for interviews. The council will receive a list of candidates Dec. 18.
New Prague Moving Forward With Memorial for Vets
New Prague is moving ahead with fund-raising efforts for a memorial to veterans next to the New Prague Library. T-shirts and can koozies are on sale in New Prague and a beneďŹ t for the plan is slated for Feb. 10 at the Park Ballroom in New Prague. Eight different bands will perform, the New Prague Times recently reported. The bands will perform music intended for all ages. There will
also be a silent auction. The proposed memorial is 52-by-52 feet. It will include agpoles, a wall containing the names of veterans from the community and information from the various branches of military service. A committee planning the memorial to New Prague and area veterans has been meeting with the city’s parks commission and city council.
