Liquor Store Doesn’t Belong in Mall

The owner of Shakopee Town Square Mall has decided a liquor store and a college don’t really blend well together in the same building. And so, the mall’s principal owner says, it’s time for the liquor store to relocate. The school and the company it created to manage the mall recently informed John Bernstein, owner of Valley Liquor, that his lease won’t be renewed. Feb. 1, Bernstein began a selling off all the $300,000 in inventory, the Shakopee Valley News recently reported.

Minnesota School of Business bought the mall just south of the intersection of Highway 169 and County Road 69 about 10 years ago. Valley Liquor is the mall’s longest standing tenant, in business there since 1984. Bernstein said his store’s fate became official Jan. 1. He would prefer to keep it open by selling to a new owner. He noted his working relationship with the school has always been positive. The store has four part-time employees who’ll be out of jobs, the newspaper reported.
