Scott County Pheasants Forever Banquet Feb. 26 The Scott County Pheasants Forever Chapter is hosting its 29th annual fund-raising banquet on Thursday, Feb. 26 at Ridges at Sand Creek Golf Course in Jordan. The doors will open at 5 p.m. with the dinner and program from 6:45– 9:45 p.m. Tickets are limited. This event is open to the public and those interested in conservation, hunting and wildlife are encouraged to attend. Jim Legg, Scott County chapter president, said the banquet is the single most important fund-raising event during the year. Everyone concerned with local ring-necked pheasants and wildlife populations in general are encouraged to attend. The food is always great and prizes are always plentiful. There is fun for the whole family. It’s Pheasants Forever’s vision that current and future generations of hunters and conservationists are able to enjoy abundant populations of wild pheasants, quail and other wildlife. Wildlife habitat faces monumental challenges in an everchanging world. Agricultural expansion, a growing population, water wars, urban sprawl and oil and mineral exploration are all threats to the habi-

tats pheasants, quail and other wildlife call home. If there are to be places for wildlife going forward, we’ll have to work harder, be more creative and build more partnerships than ever before. Our advantage today is more people than ever care about wildlife, which also makes it a time of opportunity. There’s room for wildlife habitat on every farm and ranch to better protect our natural resources and to leave uplands and wetlands for future generations to enjoy. “Attending a Pheasants Forever banquet is an excellent way to contribute to a good cause because our county chapter retains all of the money (exclusive of membership fee) we raise and use this money for habitat work with farmers and landowners in our immediate area,” Legg said. According to Legg, the Pheasants Forever committee members are hard at work calling on donators and sponsors for the banquet. For more information on the banquet of Scott County Pheasants Forever, contact Stacy Dvorak at 612-202-6119 - email: banquet@scottcountypf. org or visit www.scottcountypf. org at

The Scott West wrestling team came into their 25th year of the program in 2014-15 with the motto-theme that “We Did Build That!” and this year’s team has certainly lived up to those words as they have continued to build on the tradition of success that is represented by the Scott West Wall of State that has now overflowed from one end wall in the Scott West wrestling room to the second end wall. With last week’s 32-31 criteria win over New Prague for the Section 2AA team championship title, this year’s Panthers have added a Scott West Team Block to the wall. This past weekend in Delano offered the Scott West individual wrestlers with their own opportunity to add their own State Block as they competed in the Section 2AA Individual Championships. “The Scott West Wall of State was the backdrop for our poster this year and it’s a pretty impressive sight in the Scott West wrestling room,” states Scott West coach Darren Ripley. “Our kids did an outstanding job of wrestling this past weekend in Delano and they have added some very important blocks to the Scott West Wall of State.” One score and five years ago, Jason Piche laid the first individual block to what has now become the infamous Scott West Wall of State as he was the first Scott West state qualifier in 1991 during the first year of the program. Twenty-five years later, Jason Piche was sitting in the stands watching his son Carter Piche become a state qualifier at 120 pounds for Scott West. The current Piche would pick up a big win in Saturday morning’s semifinals as he bettered Hutchinson’s Dylan Pundsack 3-1. After a scoreless first period, Pundsack scored a matchleading escape, but Piche powered through his Tiger opponent on what would amount to hard double leg take down and a 2-1 second-period lead. Piche then secured the 3-1 match win with a third-period escape. However, after losing a 4-0 championship match to Waconia’s Tyler Wagener, Piche had to go back to the mats in a wrestleback against Watertown-Mayer’s Brady Kohls, a wrestler that he had beaten 8-2 during the regular season. Piche would follow the state footprints laid by his Scott West dad in year one of the program as he went right to work against his Royal opponent, and after scoring the opening take down, he turned Kohls with a butcher turner for a three-point near fall and then transitioned into a matchending bar arm as he drove his opponent to his back for the ensuing pin fall call. Although he would take a different path than his teammate Piche, Ben Kelvington found the right combination to qualify for state through the wrestleback round. In a weekend that saw him win his 100th career match, Kelvington had his back to the wall when he lost a 1-0 semifinal match to New Prague’s #8 Chase Logelin. However, when Logelin upended Hutchinson’s #5-rated and returning state place winner Riley Drew 5-4 for the 126-pound section championship, Kelvington was back in business after pinning Watertown-Mayer’s Bryce Duske. Kelvington would follow Piche’s lead as he used a series of leg attacks that were spot on and allowed him to score a take down in each of the three periods. With a good

(continued from page 13) Elizabeth Johnson both added 10 as the Tigers climbed out of the MRC cellar with a 67-58 triumph over the Giants Friday night at the BPHS gym, avenging what was LS-H’s only conference victory in three years a month ago. LS-H led 30-21 with less than five minutes left in first half before Belle Plaine began to pick up steam and cut the margin to 35-34 at halftime. “LS-H started out hitting everything in sight from the perimeter,” Carlson said. “Mckayla Stowell was beating us off the dribble and they took the nine-point lead. We came back strong though behind Paige Narveson to close the gap at the half. “We stepped up our play in the second half and did some smart things. Paige Narveson and Ireland Lambrecht hit some big threes as LS-H was really overpowering us inside and therefore crated openings at the perimeter . . . Elizabeth Johnson had a great game, especially defensively on their quick point guard. Amelia Kahle did a lot of good things for us inside. Mariena Hayden was getting doubled-teamed and did a really good job finding her teammates,” Carlson continued. Joining Narveson, Hayden and Johnson in the scoring department for Belle Plaine were Amelia Kahle (8), Lambrecht (6), Paul (4), Haleigh Weiers (2), Schmitz (2) and Schultz (1). Hayden had eight rebounds, while Narveson and Johnson both had four assists and two steals. Paul had five rebounds. Mckayla Stowell led LS-H with 17 points. Samantha Winter added 14.

hard ride added into the mix, the Scott West junior built a commanding 7-0 lead late into the period before Drew responded with an escape and a take down to make the final 7-3. Saturday morning’s semifinal round began with a bang for Scott West as the Panthers book-ended big wins from their lightweight Parker Huss at 106 and their heavyweight Josiah Schatz. Huss found himself in a wrestling rumble with Waconia’s Garrett Vos for the second weekend in a row. Huss had won in the team section semifinal meet 2-1, but it was Vos that scored the opening take down in this one as he was on his way to a 2-0 lead. Trailing 3-0 in the second period, Huss mounted a comeback as he momentarily tied the match 4-4 with two take downs. The match eventually went to overtime tied at 8-8 and Huss came away with a thrilling victory at 10-9. While the Section 2AA semifinal round started off with the Huss rumble win at 106, it came to an end with a big bang as Scott West heavyweight Josiah Schatz brought down the house with a big move comeback of his own against Hutchinson’s #1-rated and twotime state place-winner Jake Filk. Trailing 7-1 in the third period, Schatz found a way to maneuver his way into digging into a tired Filk, locking him into a headlock and taking him to the mat with a big bang and the ensuing pin fall call that set off a Scott West arena-erupting celebration. The big headlock win would put six Scott West wrestlers into the Section 2AA championship finals, where the beforementioned Parker Huss started things off right for the Panthers as he nailed down his first section title with a solid 4-2 win over Hutchinson’s #4-rated Brock Luthens at 106, while Schatz dropped a 7-2 battle with Tri-City United’s #6-rated Alex Burns. Burns had advanced to the championship round with a big 13-1 over Mankato East’s #2-rated and returning state place-winner Logan Swanson. Schatz would not have to face a true second wrestleback match as Hutchinson’s Jake Filk won a 1-0 third-place match over Swanson. A second Scott West wrestler that would not have to face a true second wrestleback match was 113-pounder Jackson Stauffacher as the freshman will be making his second trip to state. The Panther lightweight took care of some of his business in the semifinals as he bettered Watertown-Mayer Lutheran’s #10-rated Kendall Nowlan. Stauffacher rode an opening-period take down to a 3-1 win over the Royal wrestler, who would come back to place third. In what would be a repeat of last year’s 106 Section 2AA championship final, Stauffacher scored the opening take down on Delano’s one-time state champion and #1-rated Tucker Sjomeling. However, later in the first period, Sjomeling would fight off another solid Stauffacher leg attack, break his position and then lock the Panther lightweight up in a match-ending cradle. Two Scott West wrestlers will be making their fourth straight trips to the individual state tournament as seniors David Flynn at 132 and Andrew Fogarty at 160 both dominated their respective weight classes, with each containing another highlyrated individual. The Section 2AA championships were also the fourth in a row for each wrestler. While Flynn had placed fourth and third in his previous three trips to the state tournament, Fogarty had placed third twice and first last year. The #1-rated Flynn did not allow a point during his four matches of the

tournament and in the championship used a couple of good leg attacks to get to #5-rated Watertown-Mayer’s Jackson Sweeney before using a powerful turn late in the third period for a 9-0 win. In his championship bout against Waconia’s #2-rated Nick Green, Fogarty controlled things from start to finish. After scoring the opening take down for a 2-0 first-period lead, Fogarty broke the match open in his favor as he scored a reversal and then proceeded to lock up the Waconia wrestler and take him to his back in a three-point cradle that left the Panther wrestler with a 7-0 lead and that is the way that it ended. There was a lot of other Scott West action taking place in the tournament as the Panthers had three others that placed in the top six of their respective weight classes. After losing his first match to Watertown-Mayer ’s Brian McDonald 4-3 at 138, junior Ryan Siegle wrestled his way all the way back to third place as he strung three match wins together, culminating with a 7-4 win over Tri-City United’s Jackson Mueller. Siegle’s state tournament bid came to an end when he was pinned in his true second wrestleback match by Glencoe-Silver Lake’s #5-rated Brandon Richter. Freshman Tyler Buesgens at 145 battled his way into the semifinals as he scored a big 3-2 win over Watertown-Mayer’s Cory Jobe. In the semifinals, Buesgens faced New Prague’s #1-rated and returning state champion Griffin Parriott, and while he lost the match, he made the Trojan wrestler work his way to an 18-7 major decision. Buesgens ended up with a fourth-place finish as he lost 6-4 to Tri-City United’s Max Arroyo. Dylan Johnson was the final Scott West place-winner as the junior finished sixth at 152 pounds, while Deshawn Carter (170), Calvin Menke (182), Tyler Grieves (195) and Jacob Allen (220) competed for the Panthers and did not place in the top six of their respective weight classes. “We will need all of these wrestlers to be ready to go for the state team tournament,” insists Ripley. “They all still have some very important wrestling to do.”
