Scott West Completes Busy Week; Wins 9th Grade League State Title

The Eastview Lightning Invitational team competition on Saturday was won by Farmington with 185.5 points, while a skeletal Scott West team would manage to score a fifth-best 105 points. Brendan Mackedanz made good on his opportunity as the senior won the 120-pound championship with a dominating 13-2 major decision over Winona’s Eli Fabion. After taking a 2-0 first-period lead with a nice leg attack take down, Mackedanz opened the flood gates during periods two and three as he took Fabion to his back after two reversals in each period. The state of Scott West wrestling got a big boost as senior heavyweight Josiah Schatz returned to the lineup for the first time this season and pinned Farmington’s Trevor Frost for the championship. Schatz had advanced to the championship match with a big pin of Eastview’s Tim Duffy in the semifinals as each of the wrestlers had placed fifth in the state in their respective AA and AAA heavyweight classes last year. “Obviously, it is good to have Josiah back out and wrestling, states Scott West co-head coach Darren Ripley. “I think it may have taken a little longer than we would have liked, but the important thing is that he has made the weight and just as important is that he wrestled pretty well against some pretty good competition. Scott West sophomore Jackson Stauffacher was the third Panther individual champion on the day as the 126-pounder won a wild 12-9 decision over Jackson Smith from Amery, Wis. Another Scott West sophomore was in the championship finals at 182 pounds as Tyler Buesgens went to the mat against Farmington’s highlyregarded senior Taylor Venz. The former Farmington state champion was able to get off to a fast start against Buesgens as he used two well-executed leg attacks to take a 4-1 first-period lead. Buesgens won the battle from there on as he outscored Venz 3-2 in periods two and three but it was not enough as the Farmington wrestler won the championship bout 6-4 and Buesgens would end up with a second-place finish. The Panthers had other Eastview Lightning Invitational place-winners in Jack Fogarty, who was fifth at 132, Dylan Johnson, who was sixth at 160 and Noah Ellingsworth, who was sixth at 170. Earlier in the week, Scott West traveled to Wayzata (Thursday night) where it posted a pair of dual meet victories by beating Chaska-Chanhassen 53-12 and host Wayzata 42-27. On Friday night, the Panthers scored a 50-18 Minnesota Conference win over Tri-City United in front of a big home crowd in Belle Plaine. The Panthers have another

Belle Plaine Takes First in Jazz, Second in Kick at Cannon Falls Invitational

The Belle Plaine High School Explosion dance team turned in one of its best performances of the season at Saturday’s eightteam Cannon Falls Invitational, placing first in jazz and second in kick. “After our varsity jazz performance, I wasn’t certain we had gotten first place as there were a few too many errors for my liking, said Belle Plaine coach Sibel Dikmen. “I believe it was our strong utilization of talent on our team that brought home first place. Doing this great in the jazz category is a source of pride for the program, which has historically been a strong kick team. “Heading into the kick division, both JV and varsity were feeling nervous about eliminating all personal errors, a goal for our team that brings us closer to a strong section performance, Dikmen continued. “Though we didn’t quite eliminate all errors, there were great improvements made and at the end of the day, awards were brought home. Junior Varsity In the jazz division, Dikmen said the Belle Plaine junior varsity team finally had enough time to work on its new routine and executed them well. “Their energy and newly added difficult skills really bumped up the routine to first place. The B-squad jazz team also had an amazing showing and managed to beat out three other teams for fourth place, Dikmen said. Belle Plaine was scheduled to host Minnesota River Conference meet No. 3 and final at Oak Crest Elementary School Tuesday night after this edition of the Herald went to press.
