Tigers Get First Win by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School girls’ basketball team’s absence from the 2015-16 win column ended as the Tigers defeated Le Sueur-Henderson 57-45 Friday night at the BPHS gym. It was only Belle Plaine’s fifth win in Minnesota River Conference play dating back to the start of the 2014 season. Four of those five wins have come against LS-H. Belle Plaine, which began last week with a 72-42 MRC loss at Norwood Young America on Tuesday, got this week started with a 60-31 nonconference loss at Southwest Christian Monday night. The Tigers, 1-5 in the MRC, 1-15 overall, were scheduled to play another nonconference game on the road at Waconia Tuesday night after this edition of the Herald went to press. They will host Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 6 p.m. this Friday before resuming MRC play 7:30 p.m. next Monday against Sibley East in Belle Plaine. NYA 72, Tigers 42 Freshman guard Paige Narveson returned to the lineup and scored 20 points but it wasn’t nearly enough as the potent Raiders cruised to a 30point victory at home over the Tigers last Tuesday night. Joining Narveson in the scoring department for Belle Plaine were Lily Vinkemeier (6), Elizabeth Johnson (5), Schuyler Sterk (4), Maria Larson (3), Alexa Lenz (2) and Hailey Witt (2). Vinkemeier had a teamhigh six rebounds, followed by Johnson and Sterk with five apiece. Johnson and Alissa Schultz both had two steals. “It was good to see Paige Narveson back and she played a very good overall game and shot really well, said Tigers coach Randy Carlson. Her presence will help us a lot – another scoring threat. Schuyler Sterk continued her improved play for us with a strong inside presence. Alexa Lenz also continued to improve her play with a lot of confidence. Tigers 57, LS-H 45 Four Tigers scored in double figures as the Tigers bettered the Giants by a dozen points Friday night in Belle Plaine. Ireland Lambrecht led the way with 18 points, followed by Johnson (13), Narveson (11), Schultz (10), Lenz (3) and Vinkemeier (2). Rebound-

ing leaders were Schultz with seven and Sterk and Johnson both with six. Grabbing five rebounds apiece were Narveson, Vinkemeier and Lambrecht. Narveson and Johnson both had three steals, the latter also having four assists. “Our defense and rebounding was much better, said Carlson, whose team led 27-16 at halftime. “It was good to get that first win and that monkey off our back. I really like our team right now and good things are waiting to happen for us. We need to continue our improvement and outwork people. SW Christian 60, Tigers 31 The Tigers traveled to Southwest Christian in Chaska for a nonconference contest this past Monday night and stuck with the Eagles for much of the first half, trailing 20-17 with about five minutes left before intermission. But the home team took over from there, scoring the final nine points of the first half and outscoring Belle Plaine 31-14 the rest of the way for a 29-point victory. “Their match-up zone took us out of our offense and we never really got into a flow, Carlson said. Narveson led the Tigers with 10 points, followed by Schultz (8), Lambrecht (5), Vinkemeier (4), Johnson (2) and Brittany Teal (2). 2015-16 BPHS Girls’ Basketball Results and Remaining Schedule Dec. 1 vs. WEM L 64-29 Dec. 3 at Farib.
