Scott West Captures Rumble on the Red The Scott West wrestling team rang in the New Year by traveling to Fargo, N.D., for the ninth annual Rumble on the Red Championships that were held Friday and Saturday. The Panthers went into the Fargodome and wrestled their way to their third Rumble on the Red Championship team title in five years.
Scott West won its first Rumble team championship in December of 2010 and followed that up with a repeat performance in December of 2011. It was not easy for Scott West to win the event as 62 teams representing seven states (Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Montana and Wyoming)
converged on the Fargodome for the tournament. It was the team from Sidney, Mont., that challenged the Panthers all the way as the Eagles soared into the final round of place match wrestling with a 5.5 team point lead after having advanced three of their wrestlers to the championship finals and two others into the consolation third-place matches.
Among those leading the final round comeback for Scott West was Parker Huss as the sophomore 106-pounder capped his solid tournament with an exciting 3-1 overtime win over Annandale-Maple Lake’s #3-rated junior Holden Youngs. In the overtime, it was all Huss as

Tigers Drop Both Games at NYA by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School girls’ basketball team absorbed two defeats at last week’s holiday tournament in Norwood Young America, falling to Mound Westonka 53-43 on Monday and New Ulm 59-43 on Tuesday. Host NYA won the tournament with a convincing 52-19 victory over Mound Westonka in last Tuesday’s championship game. They will host St. Peter in a nonconference game 2 p.m. this Saturday. That game will be followed at 4 p.m. by the Belle Plaine boys’ team also taking on St. Peter. The Belle Plaine girls’ and boys’ teams will be part of another doubleheader next Tuesday at Jordan. The girls will tip off at 6 p.m. and the boys at 8 p.m. Mound-W 53, Tigers 43 The Tigers lost to Mound Westonka 53-43 at last Monday’s holiday tournament in Norwood Young America. The Tigers, who trailed 29-16 at halftime, were led by Ireland Lambrecht and Mariena Hayden with 15 points apiece. New Ulm 59, Tigers 43 New Ulm grabbed an early lead and led by 13 points at halftime on it’s way to a 16point victory in last Tuesday’s third-place game at Norwood Young America. The Tigers managed to close to within six points before the Eagles pulled away again. Hayden had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Belle Plaine, while Torrie Kellogg and Alissa Schultz pitched in 10 and seven points, respectively. “New Ulm is a very skilled team that shot the ball well. That was basically the difference,” said Belle Plaine coach Randy Carlson. “To beat good teams, we are going to need to have people score more consistently. The name of the game is making baskets and we are improving there a lot. We need to keep working hard and good things will happen.”
Tigers Open New Year With Loss by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School boys’ basketball team played its first game in 17 days Monday night and dropped a nonconference game to Faribault Bethlehem Academy 68-63. The Tigers, 1-2 in the Minnesota River Conference, 1-8 overall, will travel to Tri-City United for a MRC game 7:30 p.m. this Thursday. They will host St. Peter in a nonconference game 4 p.m. this Saturday. That game will be preceded at 2 p.m. by the Belle Plaine girls’ team also taking on St. Peter. The girls will tip off at 6 p.m. and the boys at 8 p.m. Faribault BA 68, Tigers 63 Junior Luke Narveson returned to the lineup for the first time since injuring his thumb more A Faribault BA defender had to put on the brakes faster than than a month ago and respond- he wanted to as Kincade Retzer looked for a teammate to pass ed with a team-high 23 points to during Monday night’s game at the BPHS gym. but it wasn’t enough to shake the visiting Cardinals Monday night at the BPHS gym. Mitchel Stier added 16 points for the Tigers, who trailed 3024 at halftime. Also scoring for Belle Plaine were Taylor Lenz (8), Nathan Herman (7), Brandon Schulz (3), Taylor Ponath (2), Joe Hankins (2), Kincade Retzer (1) and Derek Guscette (1). Faribault Bethlehem Academy’s Peter Clark had a gamehigh 30 points. “We played a good game, especially after a two-week break between games,” said Tigers coach John Wellner. “It took us a little while to solve their zone. We haven’t seen a traditional 2-3 zone yet this year. Once we got the ball into the middle, it opened things up and we were able to score a little bit better. Our goal this year is to improve everyday and get better in every game. We are on track and just need to keep focusing on the little improvements and soon the wins will take care of themselves.”
