Law enforcement officers across the United States and in Canada are on the lookout for Kevin Johnson, a Le Center resident who did not register as a sex offender after his release from prison. Johnson had been convicted for third-degree criminal sexual conduct for assaulting his wife at her Belle Plaine home in 2015. Le Sueur County deputies went to see Johnson after a family member requested a welfare check on him last month, said Nick Greenig, chief deputy of the Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Office. Belle Plaine police were also asked to check on his condition. The house was identified by the Minnesota Department of Corrections as a place Johnson might but was vacant, said Belle Plaine Police Chief Tom Stolee.
The family member indicated Johnson did not show up for work in three days and reportedly had not been taking his medication. A vehicle Johnson borrowed was located in northern North Dakota, specifically in Pembina County near a U.S.-Canadian port of entry. “Everything we’ve investigated thus far indicates he probably crossed over the border,” Greenig said. Johnson is wanted on three felony counts – allegedly failing to update his address and change of employment, failing to register as a sex offender and failing to send in a verification letter. “There’s a nationwide warrant out for him. That’ll remain open until we find him,” Greenig said.
