TCU Makes it Official: Titans Will Have a Dance Team

After years of sponsorship by parents and the school district’s community education department, the Tri-City United School Board recently approved its formal backing of a schoolsponsored dance team. Superintendent Teri Preisler said Minnesota State High School League and district criteria for creation of an activity support the school board sanctioning of a dance team. She noted there is ample support for participation in the team, based on student surveys. Tri-City United represents the communities of Montgomery, Lonsdale and Le Center. Preisler pointed to Belle Plaine, a school of similar size and fee structure as TCU High School with a dance team, the Montgomery Messenger recently reported. The new team will cost the district about $8,900 next year. Earlier this year, the TCU team participated in a dance

competition at New Prague as an exhibition. Feedback from other teams indicated TCU was competitive with other formally school-sponsored dance teams. TCU is not significantly concerned the addition of a dance will impact participation in other sports since the school district has offered it through community education. Preisler said other area schools have indicated preliminary interested in joining TCU dance on a cooperative basis. The same survey also indicated solid interest in gymnastics, soccer and lacrosse, said Greg Feddema, TCU’s activities director. The timing of the board’s decision is important since the Minnesota River Conference is open to adding TCU to conference membership and the 201617 schedule, Preisler said. MRC teams compete three times a season in high kick and jazz competitions.

Cassie Koch Steps Down as Belle Plaine Volleyball Coach by Dan Ruud After five conference crowns, four section titles and one state championship in her six years as head coach of the Belle Plaine High School volleyball team, Cassie Koch has resigned. Her resignation comes just four months after leading the program to its first state championship this past November. Koch, who works for the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, provided the Herald with the following statement on Monday. “I submitted my resignation after confirming my husband and I are expecting our second child in September. BPHS has always been flexible and supportive of my needs away from the court, but it was ultimately time for me to take back the time I dedicate to the program year-round and dedicate it to my growing family. I have had nothing short of a fulfilling experience as head coach for the past six seasons,” Koch continued. “I had the opportunity to coach several outstanding young women with superior talent. I thank them all for committing to my coaching philosophy and representing their community with class. Concluding last season with a state championship is obviously a milestone we’ve been seeking for some time. As hard

as it is to depart after that, I do feel a sense of satisfaction that conveniently matches the circumstances of my personal life. The time is just right for me. “Lastly, I want to thank my coaching staff that have all been with me for my entire coaching career, as well as BPHS administration and the community for genuinely supporting me and the program for the past several years.” Koch led the Tigers to Minnesota River Conference championships during her first two seasons as head coach (2010 and 2011) with records of 7-0. Belle Plaine was third in 2012 but won the section title and finished fourth at state that season. Over the next three years, the Tigers won the conference and section championships each season, becoming state consolation champs in 2013, third at state in 2014 and state champs last year. Koch’s record in the MRC in six seasons was 38-3. Her overall record was 149-51. The school district is currently advertising for Koch’s replacement. reer at BPHS in the fall of 2002 as one of the most accomplished prep players in U.S. history. She set the national kills record her senior year and was selected all-state multiple times. Koch (Wolpern) was named the MRC most valuable player three times and was all-conference from eighth grade through her senior year. She led Belle Plaine to the state consolation title as a junior. As a sophomore, she helped the Tigers finish fourth at state. Koch attended the University of San Diego on a volleyball scholarship in the fall of 2003 before transferring to Minnesota State University, Mankato, where she was one of the Mavericks’ top players the remainder of her collegiate career. She Will be Missed “Cassie has been an iconic piece of Belle Plaine sports history and we are extremely fortunate to have shared in that success,” said BPHS Activities Director Chad Eischens. “Cassie is so much more than a coach to our volleyball players. She understands that there is life after sports and her focus is on preparing these young ladies to be the best people they can be in their time at BPHS and out in the real world. Her exemplary leadership will be sorely missed both on and off the court.”

We collected blankets, books, some toys and wrote encouraging notes,” Elissa said. She went on to explain that her dad, Tim, who is a carpenter, will assist her in building the little library, which will be 3 feet high, 2 feet wide and 1 foot deep. She’s also overseeing the fund-raising and book drive for the project, which will include books “for all ages.” She will also continually monitor the little library to make sure its inventory stays intact. “I will be keeping the books (as many that will fit) in the library and hopefully people will return the ones they borrow. If they like the book, they may keep it as long as they follow the little library rule and donate two books in return,” Elissa told the council. She added that she and her mother had already been in contact with city staff, and that the public works department will provide the post for her little library. Elissa and her parents got the

idea for the project from their former neighbors, Tim and Holli Berge, who built a little library and established it on their front lawn in 2012. The Berges have since moved and took their library with them, leaving Belle Plaine without one at this time. But that’s about to change. In fact, Belle Plaine will likely have two little libraries soon as some of the younger Girl Scouts from the local program are combining on a project that is proposed to establish a little library at Heritage Square Park on the other side of Highway 169. According to littlefreelibrary. org, the mission of such libraries is “to promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide and to build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations. There are over 36,000 Little Free Library book exchanges around the world, bringing curbside literacy home and sharing millions of books annually.”

BPHS Grad Takes Up Mountain Climbing Cory Klein, a 2003 graduate of Belle Plaine high School, is only a couple of years into a rigourous new hobby but already is making a mark on it. Klein, a graduate of the University of North Dakota now living in Robbinsdale, reached the summit of Mount Rainier in Washington state in 2014 through a guide service. The climb took a couple of days. A few months ago, Klein and a group of his friends attempted to conquer Aconcagua, which is located in Argentina and is the highest point in both the Western and Southern hemispheres. “The trip was scheduled to take 14 days to reach the summit but the altitude got the best

of me and I had to retreat back down the mountain on day nine,” Klein said. “My bloodoxygen saturation was far too low to have an enjoyable climb and my chances for a successful summit were minimal. Simple daily functions such as putting on boots became a job and would make me short of breath.” But Klein didn’t let the need to go back down Aconcagua spoil his vacation. “After I got back to the city of Mendoza, I was able to go on a white-water rafting adventure, tour the city and enjoy a few wineries in the area . . . Although I wasn’t able to summit Aconcagua, I learned a lot

about myself and came back a better person from my experience.” Klein said the quest of “being on top of the world” is what attracted him to mountain climbing, an endeavor he doesn’t plan to give up on. He and some fellow climbers are considering 2017 for their next climb – Mount Elbrus, which is an 18,510-foot dormant volcano in Russia. “My dream is to be able to attempt all the 7 Summits in the world,” Klein said. The 7 Summits represent the highest point on each of the seven continents, the granddaddy of which is Nepal’s Mount Everest, Earth’s highest mountain.
