If the students who have indicated interest are truly willing to commit to a team, Tri-City United may add two new girls sports next year – swimming and gymnastics. A survey among students indicated the greatest amount of interest for the new sports – about a dozen for each sport was discussed during a recent school board workshop. Twelve student-athletes is not enough to field a full team but it is enough to create a cooperative team, the Montgomery Messenger recently reported. Swimming could be offered cooperatively with Jordan, which is also seeing interest in the creation of a team. Gymnastics could be offered in conjunction with St. Peter or Waseca. The swimming meets would likely be held at the pool at TCU’s middle school in Montgomery. It was last used competitively in 2005 when TCU and New Prague field a co-op team. There has been some interest in boys’ swimming at TCU, but not as much as the girls. If TCU creates cooperative swimming and gymnastics teams, they would need to find

a conference in which to compete since the Minnesota River Conference schools doesn’t compete in either sport. TCU School Board members took note that the students indicating interest in the two sports are not currently participating in a sport. The TCU school

It is up to the individual to decide when to begin receiving Social Security beneďŹ ts. A person can take a reduced beneďŹ t as early as age 62. Or, a former employee can claim a full beneďŹ t at what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Otherwise, a person can wait until age 70 for yet a larger beneďŹ t. Bear in mind that, once you elect to receive a reduced beneďŹ t, you remain at that level for the rest of your life (with normal cost-of-living increases). The longer you are apt to live, the more you beneďŹ t from waiting for the larger check. The current generation of retirees is more likely than the last generation to have active retirement years ďŹ lled with a mix of travel, sports, and education. How will you spend your retirement years, and how can you fund those years? Social Security may ďŹ ll only a limited amount of your ďŹ nancial demands. Even though the project will cost about $120,000 more than expected, the New Prague City Council recently awarded the bid to continue work on the baseball field in preparation to host the 2018 state amateur baseball tournament. The council awarded a bid to Healy Construction of Faribault. Its bid of $360,800 was the lowest of six bids, the New Prague Times recently reported. The company will build new dugouts and a press box, a plaza outside the stadium build a new backstop and netting, install new field irrigation and

fencing and implement miscellaneous improvements. Other work includes preparation and painting steel at the grandstands, wood benches in the dugouts and a sign with the name of the stadium. The bid was higher than expected, in part because of contractors with full schedules, the loss of volunteer labor from the baseball association and increased costs for labor and materials. The city will cover the shortfall with money from a tax abatement payment and contingency money in New Prague’s 2017 budget.

Ask City to Maintain Local Police Dept.

Hundreds of Arlington residents have signed a petition asking the city council to retain a city-controlled police department and full-time police chief rather than contracting with another city or the county. Over 400 residents and businesspersons signed the petition. It was presented to the city council by former councilors Galen Willis and Curt Reetz. May 1, the Arlington Enterprise recently reported. Willis and Reetz contend the city will not save money in the long run and Arlington should provide its citizens that service. The city has had its own police department since the late1800s. Willis said he collected 315 of the 420 people who signed the petition. He believes he could collect far more signatures with a door-knocking campaign. In the wake of open police chief and patrol officer positions, Arlington has been using contracted police services from Gaylord and Sibley County. Councilors offered no comment on the petition since it was presented during the public comment of a recent Arlington City Council meeting.
