A person can take a reduced beneďŹ t as early as age 62. Or, a former employee can claim a full beneďŹ t at what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Otherwise, a person can wait until age 70 for yet a larger beneďŹ t. Bear in mind that, once you elect to receive a reduced beneďŹ t, you remain at that level for the rest of your life (with normal cost-of-living increases). The longer you are apt to live, the more you beneďŹ t from waiting for the larger check. The current generation of retirees is more likely than the last generation to have active retirement years ďŹ lled with a mix of travel, sports, and education. How will you spend your retirement years, and how can you fund those years? Social Security may ďŹ ll only a limited amount of your ďŹ nancial demands. Larry Ruehling, commander of the Belle Plaine Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post, said there isn’t much the city or supporters of ‘Joe’ can do about the Satanic Temple’s plans. He believes there is an element of publicity stunt to the organization’s application. “If they want a monument out there, maybe they can help contribute to putting up ags,â€? Ruehling said. Douglas Mesner, one of the founders of The Satanic Temple, previously said the organization was established not for devil worship but rather as “a national organization of tens of thousands of people seeking equality for all religious or nonreligious beliefs. “We have a lot of veterans within our ranks,â€? Mesner added. At Monday’s (May 1) City Council meeting, Councilor Theresa McDaniel, who voted for the limited public forum, said the administrative approval is “making the best of a bad situation.â€? She said the city can’t say no to the Satanic Temple. “It’s all or nothing.â€? Councilor Paul Chard, who opposed allowing any additional monuments, religious or otherwise, within Veterans Park said the people supporting the differing points of view must respect each other group’s rights within the limited public forum. He said the city can’t afford the litigation. Chard recalled Councilor Ben Stier asking local residents who wanted ‘Joe’ returned to the park if they could live with a non-Christian organization having a monument within the limited public forum. The answer, Chard said, was an unenthusiastic yes. If the temple’s monument is vandalized, Chard said he’d consider supporting removing all additional monuments besides the stone monument and ags. “They’re all going to play nice together or they won’t be there,â€? Chard said.
