Winiecki Named Scott County’s Highway Engineer Having served as Scott County’s interim highway engineer for nearly a year, the county board recently appointed Tony Winiecki to the position on a regular basis. Last week, Lezlie Vermillion, the county’s deputy administrator, said Winiecki was the hands-down choice for the job. She told commissioners that after interviews with co-workers and colleagues in other departments throughout the region, removing the ‘interim tag’ from Winiecki’s title was an easy decision. “Tony has done a good job of being innovative,” Vermillion said. Winiecki replaces Mitch Ras-

mussen. He left Scott County’s employ to work for the Minnesota Department of Transportation last year. Winiecki will earn a salary of $119,500. His contract runs through April of 2016. He could then be appointed to a four-year term as county highway engineer. Winiecki’s worked for the county since 2009. Commissioners have lauded his work. Mike Beard of Shakopee said Winiecki’s common sense approach to problem solving is impressive. Winiecki graduated from the University of Minnesota. He’s worked in engineering for 25 years, 18 in the public sector.

Chaska Begins Berm Project to Protect Venerable Ballpark The City of Chaska has begun hauling dirt fill to build a berm to protect the city’s historic baseball park from all but the most severe flooding. The city is building a $300,000 mound on the west, south and east sides of the venerable ballpark. The berm will be 30 feet wide and about 8 feet high. Work on the embankment itself should be completed in the next few weeks, the Chaska Herald recently reported. Landscaping work associated with the berm should be completed next

spring. The raised bank should provide significant protection from flooding, said Chaska City Administrator Matt Podhradsky. Cleanup and damage estimates are approximately $75,000 to $100,000 per flood. In 2014, the federal government contributed $70,000 of the $100,000 bill for cleaning up the June flood. Fill for the berm will come from construction projects in Waconia and a storm water management project in downtown Chaska.
