Crowding Highlights TCU’s Potential Referendum Plan

With three of its four building expected to hold more students than they were designed to serve, the Tri-City United School Board recently discussed plans to once again ask its residents to fund expansion and improvements of the existing facilities. Preliminary enrollment numbers from earlier this year indicated TCU’s school in Lonsdale would have 52 more students than its design capacity, the Montgomery Messenger recently reported. The building in Montgomery, which serves kindergarten through eighthgraders, will have 40 more students in its hallways than the design says it should. TCU’s high school will be over design

enrollment by 61. Only the district’s school in Le Center is within capacity. The TCU School Board -which serves residents of Montgomery, Lonsdale, Le Center, and area townships -- recently discussed ideas on adjusting the failed $18.69 million referendum from 2016 and potentially asking voters to pass it. The board is committed to adding more classroom space in its buildings. Plans for computer and staff area were eliminated to provide more learning space for students, the newspaper recently reported. District officials also stress the importance of maintenance. The roof of the building in Le Center, for example, leaks and

all the older buildings have airquality issues and security issues. At TCU High School, the district is considering expanding the ag. shop, considered by many to be undersized when the high school opened. Board members wrestled with adding additional facility needs and wants to the referendum and whether they should break the referendum into multiple questions. Others raised concern the additional items could drive the cost above the amount of the unsuccessful referendum from 2016. The TCU School Board will continue its discussions on facilities at its meeting later this month.
