Pop-Up Greeting Cards
Materials In order for the initial instruction to run smoothly, we have included kits for the learners that contain all of the necessary materials for them to create the practice pop-‐up birthday card (see student handout). In addition, we have some printed materials that the learners can follow for the initial practice card. We want the learners to make the same card initially so that they understand the process. The second card they create will be of their own design, and they will apply the principles of pop-‐up card design to their original card. These materials will provide you with an overview of the course, the layout of the room, the context in which learners will work, the agenda for the course, and all materials and resources.
Context The class should last approximately 90 minutes. In the room: ● two tables ● 6-‐8 chairs around each table ● course materials Learners will be working individually and as partners

Agenda Intro: 10 minutes Practice/Instruction: 30 minutes Design: 35 minutes Feedback/Wrap up: 15 (cards collected, display them for a day so others can see them-‐-‐ learning celebration-‐-‐, then pass along to card ministry)
Facilitation Guide Engage (5 minutes) Welcome the learners to the class. ● Ask learners: “What do you know about the Card Ministry?” ● Ask learners: “Has anyone ever received a card from the Card Ministry? What kind of card was it?” (allow a few moments for discussion) 2
●
Ask learners: “How does it feel when you receive something that has been handmade versus something that has been purchased?” (allow a few moments for discussion)
Tell learners they will be creating a hand-‐made pop-‐up birthday card that will be donated to the Card Ministry for distribution to church members on the occasion of a birthday. Then tell learners that they will also create a birthday card of their own design. Explore (5 minutes) Show the learners different examples of regular folded cards and pop-‐up cards. ● regular store-‐bought card of differing sizes ● photo of Kirigami card ● photo of different pop-‐up examples from Pinterest ● Examples from our SME that use the machine ● card we will be created Explain (30 minutes) Have learners gather their materials. They should each have their own kit, which is a baggie containing all of the necessary pre-‐cut materials for the practice card. They will also each have their own scissors, but they will share the edging scissors, the glue, and the foam squares. The ends of the ribbon will need to be tucked underneath the paper (between the paper and the card) before the paper is glued down. This step can also be tricky. This is a particularly difficult step because the words are very delicate and tear easily. Have learners touch the words to the top of the glue stick instead of trying to add the glue while the words are on the table. They will probably need extra time for this.
Finishing Touches (page 14)
Extend (Elaborate) (35 minutes) Learners will now apply their understanding of how to create a pop-‐up card and create a card of their own design. Learners can make choices in the type of card they create for their own design. ● There will be various types of paper available. ● There will be additional cut-‐outs for them to use on their cards. ● They can also determine the length of the pop-‐up folds. ● They must include at least two pop-‐up elements Remind the learners to: 1. Gather appropriate materials. Learners will select appropriate materials from the supply table for their card. Learners will also gather a pair of scissors and a glue stick. 3
2. Find an appropriate workspace (flat table, comfortable chair) 3. Assemble decorative elements as needed. 4. Construct the inside pop-‐up element using the template from the practice activity or creating a pop-‐up element of your own design. There should be at least 2 pop-‐up attachment points on the pop-‐up element. 5. Before gluing the pop-‐up element to the pop-‐up fold, place it where you want it to go and close the card to ensure that it does not stick out. 6. Attach the pop-‐up element to the inside of the card. 7. Attach the decorative elements to the inside of the card. There should be at least 2 pop-‐up elements on the inside of the card. 8. Decorate the front of the card. Continue to monitor the learners and ask them questions about what they are doing as they complete their card. Have them explain their design and why they are making the choices they make. Evaluate (15 minutes) Once learners are finished with their cards, have them share with the group. Have them explain their style, their design choices, and their paper choices. Have the other learners comment on what is good about the card and what could be improved on the card. Direct participants to complete the evaluation in the booklet (page 16). Complete the instructor evaluation.

FAQ 1. How do I choose the best paper for my card? For best results, choose a cardstock weight (at least 24 pounds) for the pop-‐up stands. Lighter weight papers can be used for decorative pieces on the cards. 2. How long should the pop-‐up folds be? The pop-‐up folds can be different lengths, but the pop-‐up element attached to the folds should not extend beyond the edges of the card. 3. How long do I let the glue dry? The glue should be dry in 10 -‐ 15 minutes. 4. What if the inside of the card doesn’t pop up? Recheck that the folds were not accidentally glued in place. 5. What if I accidentally glue the pop-‐up folds? You may be able to gently pull the folds away from the card. If not, you will have to start over. 6. What if the stars or balloons stick out of the sides? You may be able to carefully pull the stars or balloons off the card. Then you can glue them in place. If you cannot pull the pop-‐up element off without damaging it, you may need to start again with a new card.
