OF cOUNTRY

The City of Greater Bendigo would like to acknowledge that we are meeting on Jaara Country of which the members and elders of the Jaara people of the Dja Dja Wurrung community and their forebears are the traditional owners and have been custodians for many centuries and have performed age old ceremonies of celebration, initiation and renewal. We acknowledge their living culture and their unique role in the life of this region.

Gold undoubtedly put Bendigo on the map more than 150 years ago. Within a decade of the first discovery in 1851, many deep shafts were constructed to tap the rich gold-bearing quartz reefs deep beneath the surface. Many present day attractions share the fascinating stories of this gold boom. Chinese infLuX shapes hisTory.

Many thousands of Chinese arrived in the mid-1800s to strike it rich, and within ten years they made up 20% of the Bendigo population. While many returned home when the rush ended, some remained to form the Bendigo Chinese community which continues to shape the city.

When people think of Grace Kelly (1929–82), one of the most photographed women of the 20th century, what they usually recall is her beauty and elegance. She rose to fame as an actress in the 1950s, starring in films by Alfred Hitchcock and others. Her image was cultivated by the movie industry, which fed cinema-goers’ growing appetite for pictures of glamorous stars through magazines and newspapers. Grace Kelly: Style Icon traces her life from her career as a Hollywood actress to her meeting with Prince Rainier III and their subsequent marriage. Featuring dresses from such films as The Swan and High Society as well as the gown she wore to accept her Oscar in 1955, the exhibition also explores the evolution of her style as Princess Grace of Monaco, from her extensive wedding trousseau to her haute couture gowns of the 1960s and 1970s by her favourite couturiers.

AUSTRALIAN EXCLUSIVE

Bendigo Art Gallery 11 March – 17 June 2012 Featuring spectacular film costumes, haute couture gowns (Dior, Balenciaga, Chanel, Givenchy and more) and meticulously-tailored suits and American casual wear, the exhibition will explore the development and cultivation of Grace Kelly’s style, influence and transformation from Hollywood actress to princess.

Heathcote’s history began with vineyards established in the late 1850’s and 1860’s during the Gold Rush. However, vineyards had disappeared by the 1920’s and it was not until the late 1960’s that viticultural activity recommenced. Today, the Heathcote region spans approximately 100 kilometres from north to south and 40 kilometres from east to west, and is home to over 100 vineyards. Renowned for its complex, rich and elegant Shiraz, Heathcote also produces excellent wines from other varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, Marsanne and Viognier. This is intimate, grassroots winemaking; small producers handcrafting their wines; nurturing them from the vineyard to the bottle, and every step along the way. Just 90 minutes north of Melbourne, visiting Heathcote wineries will be a rewarding experience.
