I am looking forward to seeing the programme develop further throughout the year with new and exciting projects being launched to help students gain even more skills and experience needed for when they leave education. Abbie joins the Chamber team can support them. Here, we learn more about Abbie and her experiences before joining the Chamber: After finishing school, which feels like a lifetime ago, I went onto college and studied childcare. I did two years there and received my Level 2 Diploma. From then, I knew working with children was a passion of mine. After college I went straight into retail, so I could start working, and kind of got lost on what I wanted to do. I worked in retail for 13 years, six of them in the mobile communications industry.
The Chamber has recently welcomed a new Membership Executive, Abbie Pullin, to the team! Abbie will be engaging with businesses across the region, helping to spread the word of how the Chamber
I loved the job and people I was working with but something inside me was telling me “if I don’t do It now I never will”. Having worked in a nursey and helping out in my local Primary school, I knew I wanted to do something bigger, working in a class room just wasn’t for me. So, after a few google searches, I decided I was
going to do Camp America, BIG STEP I know. I did my first summer there as a lifeguard and counsellor and absolutely loved it. I loved it that much I did another summer there and during my second year I proudly got a promotion to a division leader. The second year was by far the best and I will forever have the memories and my camp family by my side. When I came home, the opportunity at West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce presented itself and I jumped at the chance, with everything crossed I got the job. As of December, my new role, as a Membership Executive, is to meet new members, help with communications, networking and any other support I can offer. I am very excited to start this new adventure and to meet more incredible people along the way.

Known for her positive outlook on life and witty humour, Sarah has played a key role in the success of the Chamber over the years and it is her hard work and dedication that has seen her be appointed to the Board of Directors. “I am honoured to have been offered the position of Finance Director and didn’t have to think twice about saying yes! The Chamber has been a huge part of my life and I am delighted to be able to represent the organisation at the Board level” said Sarah.

Jennifer Kennedy has been a vital part of the Chamber’s membership team since joining in September 2016. This work ethic has now been rewarded with the position on the Board of Directors. “It is a very proud moment to be appointed to the Chamber’s Board of Directors. I have kept Chamber Members at the forefront of everything that I do and hope that I can support them even more in my role as Membership Director” said Jennifer.

ADVENTURE PARC SNOWDONIA
THE POWER OF A LITTLE ADVENTURE It seems the vast majority of us are looking for the gift of better focus, less stress and a better work life balance. As businesses and individuals, we should be open minded about where we might find it. Which skills would you most like to cultivate to help your personal development in 2020?
like concentration, compassion and self-belief for example – by participating in adventure.
As an outdoor adventure hub with a big interest in wellbeing, it’s a question we put regularly to our corporate friends and partners. There are some common and oftrepeated themes that almost always wing their way back:
IMPROVING YOUR FOCUS
n Better focus
It’s not just about releasing a rush of endorphins – though that’s a nice side effect – it’s way more profound than that. It’s about the sense of freedom, the self-belief, the intense connection to your immediate environment.
n Better stress management n A better work life balance We’re willing to bet that these resonate with you, too. In this age of constant distraction, the sense of being overstretched, over stressed and overwhelmed is pretty much universal. For a while now, there has been a growing consensus that meditation and mindfulness is the key to soothing our strung out, stressed out souls. Forward-thinking global brands like Apple, Google and Nike have invested heavily in mindfulness courses and time out for their employees. Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey are well known advocates of the power of meditation. You won’t hear anyone at Adventure Parc Snowdonia argue against the power of focusing your thoughts with mindful techniques. The idea that being more present in each moment can have a significant effect on productivity and wellbeing is an obvious no-brainer. But does mindfulness always have to be done in a quiet, meditative environment? Over here in North Wales, we don’t think so. We believe it is entirely possible to achieve many of the same great benefits we associate with mindfulness and meditation –

The pay-off to taking part in any activity that pushes your boundaries is the enormous sense of wellbeing that it immediately serves up as your reward.
We offer fun and exciting team building activities and events designed to energise your team and reward their hard work. Whole-day packages from £45 per person.
WORLD FIRST SURF Man-made waves with a beautiful mountain backdrop
INDOOR ADVENTURES
For weatherproof fun, all year round
Take surfing, for example. When you’re out there on your board your focus and attention is completely taken up with being in the moment. All of your effort and attention is put into managing the best outcome possible: catching this wave, making this pop up, standing on your board and staying upright for more than half a second. By sticking at it and incrementally taking on bigger challenges – catching more waves, making more pop ups, standing up on your board for longer and longer each time – you gradually expand your sense of what you’re capable of, what you can overcome, what you can achieve if your only put your mind to it. That’s a powerful lesson to apply to everyday life. And to take back to the office or boardroom. If our corporate guests, friends, and colleagues are right, it seems we’re all looking for the gift of better focus, less stress and a better work life balance. Maybe having a new adventure is just where we might find it.

BCC: Budget must address critical skills shortages to ‘level up’ UK growth Over half of UK firms attempted to recruit in the last quarter of 2019, but almost three quarters have struggled to find the right talent, the largest survey of UK employers has found. n Labour market remains stable as over half (55%) of UK businesses attempted to recruit in the final quarter of 2019. n Skills shortages continue to impact growth as 72% of firms reported recruitment difficulties in Q4 2019. n With greater political stability, one in four (26%) businesses expect to increase their workforce in Q1 2020. The latest Quarterly Recruitment Outlook from the British Chambers of Commerce, in partnership with Totaljobs, revealed continued skills shortages in the UK workforce ahead of the government’s first Budget. While over half of UK firms (55%) were looking to hire, the report revealed that 72% of businesses had difficulty finding the right talent.
Levy, which hits every firm with a payroll of over £3m, to ensure companies can use the funds to train their staff. Greater flexibility for employers on how funds can be used towards vital non-apprenticeship or accredited training could help to make better use of this budget and upskill the UK workforce.
The figures illustrate a critical skills deficit across the UK workforce, with shortages most apparent in the construction and hospitality sectors, with 79% and 77% respectively struggling to recruit. Two thirds (67%) of construction businesses attempted to recruit in Q4, up from 62% in Q3. In both these sectors – and others – uncertainty over the UK’s future immigration regime continues to be a concern.
BCC and Totaljobs are also calling on the government to review the Apprenticeship
“As the UK forms new economic relationships with the EU and partners across the world, businesses also need clarity on who they can recruit. As things stand, businesses don’t know who they can hire, and under what conditions, from New Year’s Day 2021. That’s unacceptable. The Government needs to act swiftly to deliver a fast, flexible new immigration system that allows firms to access staff at all skill levels, and limits upfront fees, delays and costly red tape.” Jon Wilson, General Manager of Totaljobs, said: “The market is very much active and hiring intentions remain strong, with Totaljobs seeing 640,000 jobs advertised alongside over 12 million job applications in Q4 2019. Yet, skills shortages continue to impact many UK businesses, as one factor contributing to the UK’s low productivity rate.
Looking ahead, 26% of UK firms say they plan to increase their workforce in the first quarter of 2020. The construction industry reports the highest proportion of firms looking to grow their headcount (34%). The report’s findings highlight the need to address critical skills shortages in the upcoming Budget, including commitments to long-term funding for vocational education and for apprenticeships in small and mediumsized businesses – both of which are crucial to the government’s ambition to ‘level up’ opportunities across the UK.
‘levelling up’ opportunity all across the UK. Funding boosts are needed for vocational and technical education, for apprenticeships, and for incentives to help more employers provide high-quality job-related training.
Adam Marshall, Director General of BCC, said: “Although it is encouraging that businesses are looking to take on people, the prolonged skills shortages they’re facing are not sustainable as they try to shake off years of political uncertainty and pursue growth. “Training has got to be at the heart of the upcoming Budget if the government wishes to demonstrate that it is serious about
“UK businesses need to ensure they have robust training opportunities to keep the people they need. Totaljobs research shows that two thirds of UK workers have left a job due to a lack of learning and development. Clearly, learning new skills is very much tied up in job satisfaction. For SMEs particularly, training budgets can be an issue, which is why dedication and support from the government is essential in order to help the UK workforce upskill.”

NatWest welcomes the first female CEO of RBS Group and Announces £1bn in funding for female entrepreneurs within the wider business community which Alison champions. IP CAMERAS: FROM SURVEILLANCE TO MARKETING IP technology has enabled not only a full digital CCTV system, but also new implementations for IP cameras beyond surveillance.
Eventually, as the technology improved, we were able to launch full live video stream and turn the Streamdays service into what it is today.
In the early days of the internet, webcams were quite popular, but were very lowtech, often 1 frame every 15 minutes or so. As broadband speeds increased and with IP video technology, it became relatively straightforward to create much more “interesting” cameras.
People want to watch live video online, this is clear, and there is great opportunity for businesses to utilise live video commercially both in raising awareness for their brands, and for facilitating their customers’ experience. We intend to continue to develop Streamdays to be beneficial in these ways.” - Kevin Bowyer, Technical Director at NW Security Group.
Amongst the first people to see the possibilities of IP technology, Kevin Bowyer, NW Security Group Technical Director, developed and launched Streamdays in 2004, a live Streaming service with a marketing impact. “We caught the wave early-on using Axis cameras to offer an image relay service which made having a webcam for marketing purposes easy for businesses.

Live streaming can be used for many different marketing purposes. Changes to UK’s Cyber Essentials Scheme The Government-backed Cyber Essentials scheme has been in operation for over 5-years and has played a vital role in helping organisations protect themselves from the most common cyber security threats. By creating a baseline for effective cyber protection, organisations have been able to improve resilience and understand how to work more securely. Over the past 5-years, the scheme has been delivered by five accreditation bodies, who oversee over 200 Certification Bodies. These are licenced by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) to award certifications. In a recent announcement, however, the NCSC announced that the IASME Consortium has been awarded the contract as the sole Accreditation Body to deliver the scheme going forward. The
NCSC provided updates to organisations who currently participate in the scheme, and for organisations looking to achieve certification in the near future. Some of those key updates include: n Organisations currently in the process of certifying via one of the other four Accreditation Bodies will have until 30th June 2020 to complete the application. n As of 1st April, all new certifications must be handled via an IASMEaccredited Certification Body. n All new certificates will be issued with a 12-month expiry date. This is part of the NCSC’s strategy for organisations to review their cyber security controls on a regular basis.
n For now, the five controls will remain the same, these are: m Boundary firewalls and internet gateways.
m Secure configuration.
m Access control.
m Malware protection.
m Patch management.
Protos Networks, which has been aligned with the IASME Consortium for over 3-years, has helped certify hundreds of organisations to the standard, so there will be minimum impact to new and existing certifications delivered by Protos. First, LJLA won the UK’s Best Mediumsized Airport award at the prestigious British Travel Awards. This is the largest awards programme in the UK created to reward the best companies in travel and easily the most recognisable of all travel industry accolades amongst consumer

Awards are voted for by the public and the British Travel Awards symbol is the benchmark for excellence when it comes to finding out who really is the best in the business and to win this award was a proud moment for everyone who works at the Airport. Both Awards recognised a number of achievements over the past year, including more destinations and more passengers, whilst maintaining the highest levels of customer service. Queue times to pass through security for 97% of all passengers is just 10 minutes or less and Liverpool was the only UK airport in 2019 to receive a 5-star airport rating by the world’s leading air travel intelligence company OAG for flight punctuality, confirming its status as the UK’s faster, easier, friendlier airport.
As a keen supporter of small business and impressed with their work, he has since asked the firm to help him with several projects, including the latest design, build and launch of the new app. The firm has further benefitted from the partnership because James has gone on to recommend Daydream Designs to other businesses within the recruitment sector who they have gone on to work with. James said: “Small businesses like Daydream Designs are vitally important to the communities they are based in, providing jobs and opportunities which may not otherwise exist. They can often bring a really fresh and unique take on something or a different solution to a challenge. They are quick to react and you deal directly with a small team who are all invested in your work together. This is why I enjoy linking up with small business for some projects and Daydream Designs are no exception.”

A Gwynedd business is continuing to ride high after winning a prestigious award. SQMAS, (Supplier Quality Management Audit Scheme) based in Bangor, helps SMEs compete with larger companies by having a recognised quality management system (QMS) in place.
“The Enterprise Hub @M-Sparc was extremely pleased to award SQMAS Ltd the Business Innovation Award at the Gwynedd Business Gala Dinner Awards. It was apparent that SQMAS Ltd had identified a problem that faced all small and micro businesses in North West Wales and found a solution with SQMAS. The SQMAS Audit Scheme allows micro businesses to compete on the market, in particular when tendering for contracts. We valued their solution to a problem, and the impact that this will have for micro businesses in the region and in turn the local economy in general.”
Until SQMAS was developed the principle way for companies to demonstrate that they have a QMS was to implement ISO 9001 which in many cases is not suitable, particularly for the smaller business and this has made it tougher to compete when tendering or procuring for work.
SQMAS is simple to implement and understand and requires only six key documents to demonstrate the company is addressing customer requirements, business risks and continual business improvements. SQMAS offers the integrity of a system that has been audited by an independent third party, whilst coming in at a fraction of the cost of ISO 9001 to implement and maintain, with inspection fees up to 80% less than most certification bodies.
Since winning the Gwynedd Business Innovation Award in 2019, SQMAS has seen more clients than ever reaching out for their services. SQMAS owner, Toni Bailey says: “Since I started the business in 2014 I’d had a steady flow of clients needing to put a formal quality management system in place; something that would be recognised by larger companies and corporations but is easy to implement. “However, since I won the Innovation Award my business has really taken off.” SQMAS has increased its numbers by a third since winning the award. The sponsors for the award was the Enterprise Hub @M-Sparc which is funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government.
The requirements of SQMAS are broadly similar to ISO 9001, only that they have been adapted and simplified to reflect the needs of smaller businesses. This process approach makes it a much more suitable standard for small to micro sized businesses. “As well as winning the award, which gave us some great visibility and credibility, we’re growing exponentially through word of mouth. When businesses realise how simple and cost effective SQMAS is, and how it changes the way they engage with their clients, they can’t wait to tell others about it!” SQMAS Limited, 8 Trem Y Foel, Y Felinheli, Gwynedd LL56 4UZ

Richard. “Access to the Chateau is limited to a handful of people as it isn’t usually open to the public.” In October the wine school really goes long haul with their trip to South Africa with nine nights in some of South Africa’s finest hotels including the all-suite ‘Last Word’ in Franschhoek and Paarl. Richard commented “this really is a wine tour like no other – we have put together a remarkable itinerary taking in some of the best wine sites in Franschhoek, Paarl, Stellenbosh and Constantia including the famous Klein Constantia and we’re taking guests for lunch at the top of Table Mountain too!” Both tours are limited to just 14 guests with plenty of free time. “It’s essential that guests have time to enjoy some down time or explore some more on their own” Richard said. “I wanted our tours to reflect the intimacy of our events here in Cheshire so we’ve limited availability to the same number of guests as we have at one of our Saturday wine schools in Chester.” More detail of what’s included, a full itinerary, an eBook brochure and how to book is available at www.cheshire.wine/winetours
New Coleg Cambria CEO Will Take The AwardWinning Institution ‘To The Next Level’ Ms Williams was both a student and manager at the former Deeside College – which merged with Yale College in Wrexham to form Coleg Cambria in 2013 – and looks forward to the journey ahead. “I have always followed the college’s progress, so I’m pleased to see how it’s grown and am delighted to be back,” said Ms Williams, originally from Mold. “We have a real opportunity to become the best college in the UK; Cambria is established and respected, the links and partnerships are already in place and we have a fantastic reputation. Yana Williams has a long-term vision for the north east Wales college and will build on the foundations laid by predecessor David Jones OBE. The former CEO/Principal of Hugh Baird College in Liverpool vowed to put students at the heart of every decision and unite communities and industry behind a fresh strategy that will make Cambria “even more innovative” in the future.
“Together we can develop that potential across all of our sites and be the ‘can-do’ college for our communities, for industry, and most importantly, for our students.” Her first task will be to begin developing a strategy for the future, embracing technology and looking at modern ways of working that reflect today’s society while “future-proofing” the organisation.
“We will anticipate how trends and industries change so that we are at the forefront of advances, that’s what top colleges do,” said Ms Williams. “One of the biggest shifts, I believe, will be in adult learning. People are working longer and so many over the age of 50 may need additional support in their digital understanding to meet the needs of future employment and be as proficient as is required for the challenges of today.” “Cambria is an outstanding college so we will build on its strengths and move forward into the future, but we of course have a vision – not just mine but of all of the staff – and there are exciting times ahead,” she said. “We will work even closer with employers and our communities and make sure every qualification we deliver is linked to the private and public sectors in North Wales, so students do not have to move outside of the area to work.” Visit www.cambria.ac.uk for more on Coleg Cambria.

Growth is a key priority for the Borough
The Council has increased its collaboration with the Chamber with additional support for those interested in starting a business alongside an enhanced programme to support Brexit initiatives.
Growth is a key priority for the Borough which is demonstrated by the Council’s major investments in town centres and key industrial locations across the Borough during the last 12 months. The Council has spearheaded a number of programmes to bring forward developments including: • Securing an anchor tenant, Tiger Trailers, at Winsford Industrial Estate with an investment value of £20 million. This is part of a £5 million infrastructure scheme to open up 30 hectares of land for manufacturing businesses. Winsford is already home to major employers including Rolls Royce Henkel, Jiffy Packaging International Paper and H and M distribution. • Successfully attracting a number of national and independent retailers to the Council led Barons Quay development in Northwich, somewhat bucking the national downward trend in high streets. A number of new tenants have signed including River Island, Sports Direct, Puddle Ducks Swim School, Cheshire Farm Ice Cream and Bear Coffee have all added to the existing food and beverage offer of Wildwood and Barons Quay Social. • Redevelopment of brownfield land in Ellesmere Port has included a £70 million investment from German-owned cardboard manufacturer Pro Group with the commencement of a second phase supply park commencing in 2020. • The former Cheshire West Council Headquarters building in Chester has welcomed Admiral Taverns who have taken over 7000 sq ft of space within this prestigious city-centre location alongside existing tenants Knights Solicitors and Chester Racecourse Company. • The Council’s commercial property portfolio has also seen increased activity, with the letting of a 26,000 sq. ft building to specialised couriers, Topspeed from Knutsford, and the completion of an EU funded workspace programme. This saw over 30,000 sq. ft of new workspace being created in Northwich Winsford and Chester.

• The Borough has also benefitted from the successful revote of three of its five Business Improvement Districts with Chester City Centre, Northwich Town Centre and Gadbrook Park. These BIDS will secure over £1 million of private sector investment for these locations over the next five years. Looking forward to 2020 Future Opportunities • It’s full steam ahead in Chester City centre for the long-awaited Northgate Development, following planning approval for the first phase of development which will include an indoor market, public square picture house cinema and an arcade within the former library. • Occupancy at Northwich Barons Quay is set to increase once the next wave of tenants move in and there is further interest from a number of alternative users including an independent travel agent, indoor play area, dentist surgery and a golf adventure offer. • The Council purchased Winsford town centre in 2018 and are in the process of developing a masterplan to include a mix of retail, leisure, public and residential areas. The Council is developing a business case for the future high streets fund for Winsford to support these aspirations. External funding for key infrastructure projects including Chester Station, Ellesmere Port road improvements and local growth funding to open up additional employment land in Mid Cheshire are contributing towards the continued success of the Borough. The Council has undertaken a proactive role in developing its Local Industrial Strategy through a series of business to business events within the financial services sector and advanced and manufacturing to feed into future economic plans.

Cheshire College celebrating after ‘Good’ Ofsted rating Governors, staff and learners at Cheshire College – South & West are celebrating after Ofsted rated the College “Good”. This is the first full inspection since South Cheshire College and West Cheshire College merged in March 2017. Ofsted praised the College for its “highlyeffective” education programmes, which meet the specific needs and aspirations of learners and extends beyond the knowledge and skills needed to complete their qualifications. Dhesi, Principal and CEO, commented: “Learners and Apprentices at our College are able to flourish as a result of goodquality education and the opportunities made available to them. “We strive to enhance every experience, ensuring learners know that we want them to be successful and enjoy their learning.” Ofsted highlighted how College leaders and teachers have high expectations for learners, including those with Special Educational Needs, and what they can achieve on education programmes. Learners were praised for their behaviour, which contributes to a professional, friendly and positive environment across all Campuses. Inspectors summarised that the curriculum is carefully planned, with considerations to the content and delivery of programmes, enabling learners to gain a basic insight before carrying out complex tasks, that inspire and motivate. Teachers encourage learners on programmes at all levels to be ambitious, providing them with substantial knowledge and skills. For example, learners on Level 1 Information Technology courses are given the skills needed to pursue a career in Cyber Security. In addition, learners and Apprentices at the College are able to undertake additional qualifications to enhance their skills. For example, Engineering Apprentices study extra modules in paint technology, so they leave with a detailed understanding of the wide range of roles within industry and the requirements needed to carry out their specific role to the highest standards.

Inspectors were particularly impressed with the range of support learners can access at College, including the valuable careers guidance and pastoral care. Noting “support helps increase their resilience so that they continue with their studies and develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours to become successful in achieving their next steps.” Eryk Nowicki, 18, from Ellesmere Port, the College’s Student President said: “We are lucky to have the opportunity to learn in a warm, welcoming, fun and diverse College, where we are treated like adults and make friends for life! “Teachers push us to excel, raise our aspirations and give us the confidence to achieve.” Dhesi commented: “One of the most pleasing elements of the feedback was that, in Ofsted’s view, we are very much a single College, with three Campuses serving the very different communities equally well. It was fantastic to see that Ofsted recognised our hard work to achieve this.” The report highlights how successful the College is in meeting “regional and local needs to the communities in which the Campuses are located.”
He continued: “It is clear that the employers and universities we work in close partnership with value our contribution to their organisation and their learners. “We will continue to work with employers, universities and other organisations, to strengthen this bond, ensuring that our learners progress to employment or higher-level learning with strong values and skills, allowing them to make a positive contribution to society.” Dhesi recognised all the hard work by Governors, staff and wider stakeholders working together to collaborate on the outstanding journey that led to this achievement. Dhesi concluded: “We are thrilled with this result. I would like to personally thank the staff, learners and stakeholders for the vital role they continue to play at Cheshire College – South & West. “We have reached a milestone on our journey as a new College”. PATRON NEWS allow the business to increase its ability to support its clients in an ever-changing technological landscape. One of the biggest aspects of technology’s impact on the business world is its value in terms of increasing productivity. Therefore, experts in Unified Communications, Paul Elmore and Peter Jury gave valuable insights into how to work more effectively by utilising cloud technologies. This included a discussion on the rise of remote working and mobile workforces, and how unified communications can make this possible for companies without detracting from productivity. There were further informative presentations on some of the top performing cloud software products on the market. Nigel Blain, Cloud Consultant, provided an overview of Microsoft SharePoint and how it is modernising current business intranet systems. Ian Grobler, Technical Architect, then gave a comprehensive guide to Microsoft Teams. He explained how businesses worldwide are using it to improve communication and collaboration amongst colleagues and departments, whilst also enabling secure remote working.
MWL Systems and Elite Group recently hosted an event on successful collaboration at Chester Racecourse. It provided attendees with a unique insight into how collaborative working and unified communications can work together to make businesses more productive. The aptly named Collaboration Celebration Event was held not only to provide invaluable information on collaborative working, but also the tools required to do this effectively. And most importantly - with the necessary emphasis on cyber security and preventing potential attacks - how to achieve collaboration as securely as possible. People representing companies from across the region travelled to the event, and everyone was treated to a buffet breakfast and delicious lunch in between a series of informative seminars. Here’s a summary of some of the important things that were covered throughout the morning: Former MD of MWL Systems and now Director of IT Operations at Elite Group, Matt KingsleyWilliams, gave attendees a warm welcome and a brief history of MWL, explaining the team are proud of the fact that the company is now in its 35th year, trusted to support clients all over the UK with their IT requirements. He then gave a recap of the expertise and structure of the MWL business and highlighted how this year has marked a significant and exciting milestone in terms of the company’s acquisition by Elite. Matt said:
“We really enjoy holding events such as this, helping businesses in our region make sense of the ever-changing technology landscape and the new products being marketed by the big IT providers. “Everyone is so busy and these are competitive times so choosing the right IT systems to have installed has changed from a nice-to-have to a vital and integral part of the business’ suite of productivity and security tools. We make best use of the time available, giving attendees the benefit of our knowledge and experience on what works and what doesn’t. In particular, what they need to look out for in terms of business usability and return on investment when deciding on their IT provision; often people are just looking for some advice and someone to ‘demystify’ what can seem like overly complicated terminology employed by the industry overall, ultimately helping them to take advantage of the best and most appropriate products for their particular business.”
Two of the most important considerations for businesses over the past few years and ones that will continue to be top priorities, are the issues of IT security and compliance. These are also two of the main considerations for companies when implementing cloud technology. To help attendees understand the key requirements, Cloud Consultant, Will Jones, took attendees through the steps that they can take to make their businesses more secure and comply with legislation. Adam Turton, Managing Director at Elite Group, closed the event and spoke engagingly and positively about the future, the emerging business-improving technologies, and indeed about the positive benefits we can pass on to improve the business lives of customers of Elite Group and MWL Systems going forward. This is the latest in a series of highly successful events that MWL Systems has run over the past few years. Now, with the continued support and expertise of Elite Group, the team looks forward to hosting even more useful and varied events to continue delivering the latest IT news and information to businesses throughout the North West and North Wales. You can find all our upcoming events, workshops and seminars by visiting our Events page of our website www.mwlsystems.co.uk/events.
Matt’s intro was followed by an overview from Rob Sims, CEO of Elite Group. Rob spoke about the success story of Elite and the journey the company has taken, how it has grown its operations and how the expertise of the MWL Systems team will

We wanted to offer something that positioned as technologically in the lead as a company, and that brought our products to life – and augmented reality seemed the ideal option. We were, as always, excited to take up the challenge at Eclipse. Working with a 3D modelling specialist we came up with the idea of displaying Kingspan’s Kooltherm Pipe Insulation and KoolDuct System in augmented reality via mobile devices (iPad and mobile phone) to increase engagement at the stand. Using extended tracking technology, the virtual pipe and duct insulation systems appears as a 3D model on graphics panels each side giving the illusion that it is real and attached to it. The launch took place at Cheshire Down’s Syndrome Support Group’s (CDSSG) personal safety event on Saturday 18th January at Safety Central, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service in Lymm where they also hosted their first ever Makaton sibling training session to educate siblings to be able to better communicate with their brother/sister using signs and symbols. It follows the charity’s drive to make Northwich the first Makaton friendly town in the North West. The initiative is the largest fundraiser for the Northwich based CDSSG and enjoys generous support from schools, businesses, families and community groups year on year. Last year the community sold 52,000 gingerbread sock biscuits, this year the charity hopes to sell even more. As part of the campaign, assemblies are run at schools to raise awareness of Down’s syndrome to improve inclusion.

n Cheshire Down’s Syndrome Support Group launching their award-winning campaign The campaign was founded by charity member Emma Harris who has Down’s syndrome and is now 16 year’s old. Emma and her father Chris Harris came up with the brilliant idea of making a sock biscuit and selling it to people at her school. The reason for the sock shape is that people with Down’s syndrome all have three copies of chromosome 21 and chromosomes look like socks. Over the years, more and more schools have become involved with businesses and families not wanting to be left out. The campaign, which has won multiple North West charity awards, as well as recognition for Emma from former Prime Minister Theresa May and celebrities Olly Murs and Danny Jones, is always run in the lead up to World Down Syndrome Day which is on the 21st March. #Familylove is the charity’s newest campaign showing families celebrating their family member with Down’s syndrome and what positives there are for having them in their life.

BCC/DHL: Trade negotiations must unlock potential of struggling exporters Exporters continued to tread water through the final quarter of 2019 according to the largest independent survey of UK firms, released by British Chambers of Commerce and DHL Express today. The survey of more than 3,300 exporters revealed that manufacturing export orders weakened for a second consecutive quarter. Indicators for service sector exporters also decreased in the quarter and remain at historically low levels.
“Yet the evidence suggests that exporters are still suffering from the impacts of both Brexit uncertainty and weaker global trade. Our key indicators for export orders and sales, both in manufacturing and services, declined sharply over the course of 2019, and remain significantly lower than the previous year.
The report comes as the UK begins negotiating a new trading relationship with the EU and third countries, with cabinet ministers making it clear trade friction will be ‘inevitable’.
“We may have greater political certainty at Westminster, but this must now translate into clarity on the future trading relationship with the EU and other partners around the world.
Business is calling on the government to create the conditions firms need to boost growth both here at home and in global markets as part of a new, independent trade policy. The balance of manufacturing exporters reporting an increase in export orders fell for the second consecutive quarter to – 2. Those reporting increased domestic orders rose slightly to -1 from – 4 in Q3 but still significantly lower than Q1 2019 when the figure stood at +16. Domestic and export sales in the sector improved slightly in the quarter to +3 and +5 respectively but remain low since a sharp fall in Q3 2019. The balance of exporting manufacturers reporting improved cashflow, a key indicator of business performance, improved to +2 from a low of –9 in Q3, but remains historically weak. A year ago, in Q4 2018, the figure stood at +9. Trade documents issued by Chambers of Commerce across the UK for goods shipments outside the EU increased by 0.9% in the fourth quarter of the year, 0.2% higher than the same quarter in 2018. BCC Director General Adam Marshall said: “With the right conditions in place, UK exporters could provide a shot in the arm for the economy over the coming years.

“Getting a strong trade deal with the EU, backing our exporters, and taking action to cut the high cost of doing business here in the UK must all be at the top of the agenda over the coming months.” DHL Express VP Marketing Shannon Diett said: “After such a long period of uncertainty it’s no surprise that exports continued to languish in the last quarter of the year. However, with the expectation of new trade deals, businesses can now look to the future and begin to plan their export strategies for 2021 and beyond. “As well as having favourable trade arrangements in place, it is critical that exporters have access to practical logistics advice. At DHL Express, our teams are expert in cross-border trade and can help businesses navigate new waters with confidence.”

GETTING STARTED
Getting started with Sofia Dewberry,
Owner of Dewberry Candle To begin, tell us a little about yourself and your background. My name is Sofia Dewberry and I am the owner of Dewberry Candle, I have worked for 13 years in a stressful public service role. The business has been my stress release. As well as growing my business, I like interior design, travelling and every girl’s hobby... shopping! What made you set up the business? Dewberry candle was first founded in July 2018. This was after I became obsessed and had a dedicated cupboard for candles, air fresheners and diffusers. I would always look out for a good quality strong scented candle that would be within my price bracket. I would find that the better quality candles that had what I wanted were usually a lot pricier than I hoped. I would also look out for candles that were unique and would fit in with my home decor. How and when did the idea come about? I decided to make my own candle and see whether I could make it strongly scented and still have it be eco and vegan friendly. I gathered all my pots and pans, got the key components and made my first candle. I thoroughly enjoyed the process and was very satisfied with the result I had achieved. Whilst burning my candle, my friends and family put their requests in to have candles made for them, I designed my own candle and carefully selected the scent. This went down a storm!
This is when I started my own business. I decided I needed to approach businesses, my first day out with my candles was when I attended a Yankee Candle franchise store which had a number of other candle brands in stock. I walked in and spoke to the manager; she said that due to it being a franchise that I would need to contact the owner who is a very busy person. I was then told that the candles would fit in well with the store and was asked how many other businesses I was in. As this was my first one, I felt very inexperienced and my confidence dropped a little. I saw a mother and daughter walk into the store they walked around and then approached me and asked whether they could smell my candles. I was shocked, but of course I allowed them with the permission of the manager, whom I was still talking to. The daughter bought a candle for her mother, which was my first sale, and I was touched that they had walked past many candles and had approached me. This was a great confidence boost and I then knew my candles would do very well. Who are your target audience and what is the main aim of the organisation? My target audience is everyone. Who doesn’t love an amazing fragrance which lasts for a long time? It makes the perfect gift! They come in a variety of luxury jars to suit to anyone’s taste.
What have been your main achievements and difficulties? My main achievements have been the growth I have had with my business with it growing to have many stockists in a very short period of time. One of my stockists, as of this year, is the National Trust who I am very happy to be working with. The difficulties I have had are online orders, this is getting busier but it is taking time to get where I need to get. What attracted you to entrepreneurship? Why was this? From a very young age I have always wanted to run my own business and be my own boss. I find that it is such a rewarding feeling knowing that my products are bringing enjoyment to so many people. What are your career aims and aspirations? I would love for Dewberry Candle to become a household name, I would love for my business to grow and it be a must have luxury item. What message would you give to fellow entrepreneurs or people looking to get involved in setting up their own business or organisation? Take a risk the possibilities are endless. The only person who can make a change to your life is you.

YOUNG CHAMBER
n Year 12 pupils at Christleton High School Celebrating Young Chamber supporting 5000 students
Young Chamber Hits Two Significant Milestones! West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce is delighted to announce that its Young Chamber programme, a scheme which aims to close the gap between business and education, has reached two significant milestones: n 5000 students have been supported since its creation in late 2017. n The 100th business has joined the programme as a Sponsor. Young Chamber was established in late 2017 after extensive research from the Chamber indicated a large gap between the skills young people are leaving education with, and the skills that businesses require. Since its creation, Young Chamber has grown to assist 15 schools and two colleges in the region, supporting an incredible 5000 students at different events and projects to date, including Career Talks, Mock Interviews and Enterprise Projects. The programme is supported by a long list of leading firms from across the region, of which, Howard Worth Chartered Accountants & Business Advisers has recently joined as the 100th Sponsor. Speaking about Howard Worth joining the programme, Tax Partner, Tim Lwin commented “We are delighted to become the 100th Young Chamber Sponsor – a great reflection on how many local businesses, including ourselves, understand the importance of supporting and engaging with young people.
24
Through our new relationship, we look forward to extending our work with the Chamber and working with schools and colleges throughout the area to help and inspire the future workforce, and hopefully encourage some individuals into the world of Accountancy!” Chief Executive Officer at the West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce, Debbie Bryce, welcomed the milestones commenting; “We’ve had an amazing couple of years with the Young Chamber programme and the support that we’ve received from local businesses is nothing short of outstanding. There is a real desire from business leaders to tackle the skills issues they are facing head on”. Sponsors’ efforts have not been in vain as the Chamber has received incredible feedback from teachers on the quality of the support they have received. Lynsay Lawson, ICT & KS4 Co-ordinator at Christleton High School, explained; “The
Young Chamber programme has been a lifeline for our school. It has allowed us to expose our pupils to new challenges and situations which we would have struggled to do on our own. Young Chamber has sent positive and experienced role models to our school to engage with students and motivate them to think about their future”. It’s not just teachers that are happy with Young Chamber, with Sam Dobson, Year 12 student at Christleton High School, saying; “Young Chamber has helped me to build my confidence in so many ways, from interacting with different businesses, to exposing me to different career paths. Working with them has been a fantastic opportunity.” The Chamber of Commerce is excited to see Young Chamber programme develop even further in the future as it looks to support the business leaders of tomorrow. THE BIG INTERVIEW
John Irving CEO, Liverpool John Lennon Airport
WCNW: How did your career in the aviation industry begin? I have only been in the industry for four and a half years, with the past two years spent here at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. I moved from Newcastle United Football Club to Newcastle Airport in 2015 to lead the Commercial and Aviation teams. I was responsible for all revenue lines at the Airport and gaining new destinations from the airport to serve the North East market. There are lots of similarities in football and aviation, both are customer focussed, high profile industries that people have instant buy-in to. WCNW: What is the most rewarding aspect of being an airport CEO? Having a team that is passionate and proud to deliver the highest standards of customer service, combined with best in class operational performance for our customers across the region, has been the most rewarding. We see this every day at Liverpool John Lennon Airport when we deliver industry leading operational results and nationally recognised levels of service. We recently received a couple of national awards - the first was voted for by the public and the second by UK airlines. Being recognised as the best UK airport of its size in this way by both our passenger and airline customers was a tremendous achievement for everyone who works at the Airport and something we are all really proud of. WCNW: Can you give us an overview of any exciting developments currently happening at Liverpool John Lennon Airport? An Airport is an ever-evolving business with developments happening all of the time, some behind the scenes that make the business stronger and some that our passengers will see and can experience for themselves. We are constantly looking at ways to improve the passenger experience at Liverpool and offer the Faster Easier Friendlier Airport experience for everyone, every time. We will be investing in more equipment in our main passenger search area before
26
THE BIG INTERVIEW our busy Summer period, which will help to ensure that we continue to keep passenger queuing times as some of the shortest of any UK airport – 97% of all passengers pass through security in less than 10 minutes at present. We are also hoping to introduce a new food offer at the Airport too and continue to make improvements to our arrivals area – which is particularly important for overseas visitors perhaps arriving at the airport for the first time. We promote the Airport as a gateway to the North West and North Wales and improvements such as the new Halton Curve rail line means rail access between the Airport, Chester and North Wales is now far better. WCNW: What is the biggest challenge Liverpool John Lennon Airport is having to tackle? It is a challenging time for the aviation industry at the moment, with many external factors putting pressure on airports and airlines. We are on target to have 5 million passengers for the third year in a row and continue to work hard to attract airlines and new routes to our ever-expanding network. We want to see connectivity in and out of Liverpool John Lennon Airport improve as we serve the wider North West and North Wales catchment area. The Halton Curve rail line, and the subsequent new Transport for Wales rail service, are big improvements as is the Mersey Gateway bridge which now enables traffic from Cheshire and North Wales to access the Airport much quicker and easier. These improvements compliment the work we have been doing to grow the business and increase the choice of destinations, but we know more needs to be done and we are working closely with our transport partners to look at ways to improve the regional connectivity of the Airport. WCNW: How might the use of new technology impact on business at the Airport? Technology in our industry is as dynamic as it is in other industries, from aircraft efficiency to the passenger experience. We are seeing new aircraft being developed which are more efficient and greener with potential opportunities to open up new routes from regional airports. The way passengers book travel continues to evolve through technology too, and we need to stay ahead of it at the same time as looking at ways to use technology to make the airport experience the best possible. From face recognition systems helping us to better understand passenger behaviour and to run the airport more efficiently, to
change with our partners and look at ways to support this international challenge. As a member of the UK Sustainable Aviation coalition, we have recently committed to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Reductions in CO2 emissions can come from smarter flight operations, new aircraft and engine technology and the use of sustainable aviation fuels. Modernising UK airspace will help too, and we are currently consulting with the public over how we might change flight paths in relation to aircraft operating to and from the Airport which will improve aircraft efficiency and ensure that the highways of the sky are fit for purpose. WCNW: What does the future of the aviation industry look like to you? artificial intelligence helping in areas such as cleaning and aircraft turnrounds. We have some exciting times ahead. WCNW: In your opinion, how does the aviation industry need to adapt to secure its place in the future? This is an ever-changing industry and we must address the issue of climate
I hope we continue to see growth in regional airports to support the growth of the important cities and regions that they serve. At Liverpool we expect to see substantial increases in passengers and destinations and to make Liverpool the airport of choice for the region’s air travellers whilst addressing the issue of climate change.

ECONOMY
Investment intentions slump for businesses in West Cheshire & North Wales Businesses from West Cheshire & North Wales have reported a decline in investment intentions in the last Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) of 2019. Uncertainty around Brexit and global demand are likely to have been significant contributors to this fall, with training investment intentions falling to a two and a half year low. The results of the survey, which took place between 4th and 25th November 2019 and received just under 80 responses, were presented at an Economic Breakfast on 17th January 2020 at MacDonald Craxton Wood Hotel.
28
the exchange rate which were also revealed in the survey. Other key findings from the survey included; n Domestic Sales recovered slightly whilst Orders remained unchanged at a three-year low. n Export Sales and Orders returned to positive territory after the slump in Q3 ’19 but remain subdued. n The number of businesses that reported they would increase their prices in the next three months rose to the highest level since the start of 2017. n Firms continue to report recruitment difficulties with 75% of businesses that tried to recruit staff in the three months leading up to the survey fieldwork, encountering problems.
Brian Sloan, Deputy Agent at the Bank of England, presented an economic update on the latest reports from the Bank and Neil Ashbridge, ex-Bank of England, presented the Chamber’s QES Results.
Debbie Bryce, Chief Executive Officer at the Chamber, commented; “The end of political deadlock at Westminster must also bring action to renew business confidence and tackle the prolonged stagnation that’s affecting so much of the UK economy. The government must use its newfound majority to take big decisions to stimulate growth.
The QES did reveal some positive signs with business confidence in profitability rising to the highest level on record. This rise in confidence may reflect the easing in concerns around inflation and
If ministers take action to reduce upfront costs, move key infrastructure projects forward, and to help businesses on training, they’ll be rewarded with increased investment”.
In Focus with Tree Frog Digital Ltd Tree Frog Digital is a specialist Search Engine Optimisation and Google Ads consultancy who are passionate about helping businesses smash their growth targets. Tree Frog particularly like working with medium sized family businesses and businesses with multiple locations. Here, Director Chris Grice talks us through his response to the QES for the final quarter of 2019: You’ve indicated that domestic sales have increased over the last three months. Are there any specific reasons behind this? Our domestic sales have increased by almost 20% in the last quarter. The main reason for this was due to us taking a step back and really understanding who our customers really were, and making sure that we focused all of our efforts on them. By not just getting new business but also improving our service levels to them and fully understanding what they need as a business. In addition, we have seen that many businesses have turned away from the ‘frosted glass agency’ who do everything, in place with a team who specialise in specific areas. You seem to be bucking the trend and have indicated an intention to increase your business investment (in staff training) in the next three months, are there any reasons for this? Our industry is constantly changing, with a major update to Google happening around every 6 - 8 weeks. As you can imagine if we wait for a change to happen and then adapt to it, there will then be another change in place before we can fully implement the changes. This is why we spend 10% of our working week researching Google and fully understanding what we feel will be happening in the next 12 months rather than the next 12 weeks. Your confidence going into the next 12 months remains high. Is there anything in particular that is driving this? I have a ‘can do’ and ‘what if it goes right?’ attitude to business (and life) in general. So, for us it is more of a cultural thing than any one event or strategy. What would you say is the biggest challenge facing businesses in your industry at the moment? For us, skills is a massive challenge and always has been, many formal qualifications and courses in our sector are often woefully out of date by the time they are published. This is why we have focused so heavily on independent study with Research and Development, over the last 2 years.
INTERNATIONAL TRADE
Louise joins the team to support region’s exporters Louise Evans has joined the Chamber’s International Trade department to support the region’s exporters with their documentation requirements. Here, Louise gives us an insight into her journey to become the Chamber’s latest Export Documentation Assistant: Growing up in St Helens, I began my working career after leaving school as an Administrator for an NVQ Training Company, a year later I was made redundant. I then enjoyed the next 10 years working as a Sales Administrator for a car centre in Widnes as part of their Versa Sales Department. We converted panel vans into wheelchair access vehicles, supplying them to Motability, charities, care organisations and private buyers throughout the UK mainland and Ireland. This was a challenging but
rewarding role and during my time there I gained my Motability accreditation. After making the decision to move on, I was once again made redundant after six months. I then joined an air conditioning company as an Admin Account Controller in the Contract and Warranty department where I spent another enjoyable 10 years. I was working with a variety of transport companies in the rental, transport and supermarket industries. I now live in Helsby with my Fiancé and my 2-year-old daughter. After an extended maternity leave, I decided it was time to return to work part time, so here I start my next chapter within the International Trade department at the West Cheshire and North Wales Chamber of Commerce.
Six months later, I am enjoying my new role and working with my new colleagues, who have an incredible amount of knowledge! I have also enjoyed learning the ins and outs of the export process and am looking forward to completing my Foundation Award in International Trade in the coming weeks. I am excited to continue building relationships with, and supporting, all of our exporters.

WHAT I’M PASSIONATE ABOUT...
Groundwork North Wales, passionate about the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of Wales. n Susan Elan Jones, former labour MP for Clywd South, with Karen Balmer, Groundwork North Wales Chief Executive, at Minera Lead Mines
Here at Groundwork North Wales, we are passionate about the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of Wales. We align our work to the Welsh Government well-being Framework. Our programmes make a positive impact on the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of Wales. As a charity, we work towards transforming lives in disadvantaged communities, through a varied and diverse range of programmes across North Wales, which have these themes as the thread that runs through. We do this by supporting people to get back into work and gain skills and qualifications. We build stronger communities by improving green spaces and conserving the natural environment. We bring out the best in young people by helping them improve their local area and we reduce fuel and furniture poverty, in turn, tackling climate change through people using less energy and reusing and recycling more. Our social wellbeing programmes support individuals to live healthier and happier lives, now and for the future. Following a successful tender to Wrexham County Borough Council (WCBC), we were thrilled to be able to take the café on at Alyn Waters Country Park and to continue to support the volunteer opportunities provided to adult social services. It is our aspiration to develop Caffi Cyfle, to support people with learning difficulties to gain new skills and experiences. The café provides the catering for Venue in the Park, the conference suite at Alyn Waters, which forms part of Groundwork North Wales’ agreement with WCBC. Visitors to the café can enjoy freshly prepared and locally sourced homemade food and cakes. 988 community organisations supported | 2,764 volunteer days by adults The aim behind our economic well-being programmes are to enable individuals
30
and families to meet their very basic needs such as housing, food and fuel. Our programmes support the economic welfare of individuals, groups and families who are particularly vulnerable, helping them to make better, more informed choices, grow in confidence, and to improve their skills and prospects of employment. One such programme is Toyota Thrive. Toyota Thrive is transforming the lives of young people in Flintshire. Delivered in partnership with Toyota Manufacturing UK and Flintshire County Council, the programme creates new opportunities for young people (aged 16-24) to join an employability programme, including training qualifications and bespoke support. 598 formal qualifications gained Being aware of the impact of our interaction with nature and respectful of our surroundings is key to the role of our environmental well-being programmes. The environmental well-being programmes help reconnect people to green spaces to improve their overall well-being, as well as taking action to protect the natural environment and fight climate change. Local communities are changing their green spaces in Caernarfon and Gwynedd with two programmes designed to bring people together to transform their communal green spaces, helping to re-connect people with nature and understand the importance of biodiversity. The Stepping Stones programme is funded by the Landfill Disposals Tax Communities Scheme and engages with people living on the Peblig Estate to improve the environmental value of open spaces on the housing estate. Our Pollinators for the Maesincla programme, supported through the Peoples Postcode Lottery, involve planting a variety of native wildflowers and Welsh fruit trees on unused grassed areas to make these spaces rich in biodiversity. Both programmes
provide valuable volunteering and learning opportunities involving the whole community. 2,276 trees planted | 2,095 people engaging with the natural environment Cultural welfare lies at the heart of a healthy society and keeps communities vibrant and viable. Our programmes give the opportunity to express our Welsh culture and heritage through participation in recreational, creative and cultural activities that improve everyone’s social, physical and mental health and well-being. There are social benefits that heritage can bring through the sense of identity and belonging that it gives to communities In 2018, we reopened Minera Lead Mines and Country Park as a visitor attraction and outdoor events space. Our team have worked hard to bring the visitor centre and facilities back to life, developing a new and exciting programme of activities and events through consultation with the local community to allow visitors to engage with the natural heritage. 2,477 adults & young people engaged with the Minera Lead Mines local heritage site | 63 education and training courses delivered in the welsh language It is essential for everyone to take time to ensure there overall well- being. There are many pressures these days, it is important for individuals to take time to focus on their social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being, which we are passionate about. Our programmes are just some of the opportunities out there to assist with this. *figures taken form Groundwork North wales 2019 Annual Impact Report

FOCUS ON ENERGY
NEW STUDY SHOWS HOW greenhouse gases could be reduced by over a third in Cheshire by 2030 A new study by the Energy Innovation District (EID) has revealed how a local, smart energy system could reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Ellesmere Port by 34%. The £200k project – part funded by the Government’s Prospering from the energy revolution programme – also demonstrates potential energy cost savings of up to 25%.
32
FOCUS ON ENERGY The ‘E-Port Smart Energy Master Plan’ concept was developed during a sixmonth study from February to July 2019. The study – which is the first phase of the E-Port Energy project – gathered energy and infrastructure data from local stakeholders. It sets out a design and ten-year investment plan for the industrial heartland around Ellesmere Port, where 5% of the UK’s energy is currently consumed. The feasibility study shows how locally generated energy could be traded between local consumers and generators. Spearheaded by the Cheshire Energy Hub, the Energy Innovation District brings together energy users, network owners, innovators and partners – including EA Technology, Burns & McDonnell, Urenco, Cadent Gas, SP Energy Networks and Peel Environmental – working alongside Cheshire & Warrington LEP, Cheshire West and Chester Council and the University of Chester. Ged Barlow, Chair of the Energy Innovation District said: “We face a huge challenge in the UK to decarbonise and safeguard the industries that make our nation prosper. The Energy Innovation District is centred around the industrial heartland of Ellesmere Port, with its concentration of leading businesses in manufacturing and chemical production. With companies like Vauxhall threatening job losses in the region, it brings into sharp focus the need to reduce energy costs and offer a viable solution to decarbonisation. This study demonstrates how the North West is leading the charge, setting out a nationally replicable model for smart energy systems.”
“This study demonstrates how the North West is leading the charge, setting out a nationally replicable model for smart energy systems.”
Jonathan Chapman, Burns & McDonnell’s UK Managing Director and principal author of the report, said: “Investment and regulatory change will be required for E-Port Energy to fulfil the huge positive impact it has the potential for, and the same goes for the UK as a whole. Our current inability to create supply security that can deal with demand spikes while also finding solutions to meet carbon emission reduction targets reflects some failings in mapping out a clear future.
“Transforming the way we generate and distribute energy could lead to millions of pounds invested in Cheshire. The opportunities are huge and the next step is to ensure we have the right skills and workforce to deliver these world leading technologies.”
n The introduction of a higher carbon tax would enable the competitiveness of investment in low-carbon projects and reduce the cost of energy for consumers n There is a danger that the pace of growth is leaving the job market behind and it is crucial that all parties – from schools through to the industrial players themselves – take ownership of this problem to address the skills issue The E-Port Energy project is one of many the North West Energy and Hydrogen Cluster – a partnership of companies, regional leaders and network of academic experts under the North West Business Leadership Team – that recently came together to meet the Government’s challenge of delivering the world’s first net-zero carbon industrial cluster by 2040. Myles Kitcher from Peel Environmental said: “Transforming the way we generate and distribute energy could lead to millions of pounds invested in Cheshire. The opportunities are huge and the next step is to ensure we have the right skills and workforce to deliver these world leading technologies. This project is one of many in the North West Energy and Hydrogen Cluster which could see over 33,000 jobs created and £4 billion invested in the region.”
“However, a whole system approach - a fully integrated proposal for masterplanning and delivering energy services at a district level, encompassing the supply and demand of all interconnected energy vectors - will optimise the UK’s sustainability, reliability and affordability performance in the future.” Other findings outlined in the E-Port Smart Energy Master Plan include: n A whole system approach combining electricity and hydrogen is key to a lower carbon future – by enabling flexibility between different vectors, the concept unlocks capacity on the energy networks

FOCUS ON ENERGY
ENERGY INNOVATION DISTRICT WHAT IS THE ENERGY INNOVATION DISTRICT? Driven by a coalition of private sector companies working closely with Cheshire West and Chester Council, Cheshire & Warrington LEP and the University of Chester, the Energy Innovation District (EID) is an opportunity to deliver a new energy system in the North West of England. The objective is to provide secure, low carbon and lower cost energy – in turn helping to decarbonise the region while boosting economic growth and investment. Centred on the North West’s most intensive industrial heartland of Ellesmere Port,
34
the EID is an existing energy cluster that boasts some of the UK’s most energyintensive manufacturers spanning Cheshire, Warrington, Liverpool, Manchester and North Wales. The EID will become a low carbon engine for the region and its residents, researching and deploying new technologies to be at the forefront of low carbon energy generation. The EID rises to the Clean Growth challenge. It will serve as a test location for new smart energy systems that distribute clean energy locally. In doing so, it will underpin the successes of key industries at the heart of Britain’s productivity, it will put the UK on a global stage for energy innovation and private green fi nancing.
FOCUS ON ENERGY AN INDUSTRY-LED RESPONSE TO CLEAN GROWTH Change in the way we generate, distribute and consume energy must be a collaboration. This initiative is being spearheaded by private sector industries from an existing energy cluster, all eager to make their contribution to a vision for a decarbonised and prosperous economy.
The EID is led by the Cheshire Energy Hub, a signifi cant set of energy-related companies formed in 2013 with the aim of driving growth and addressing the 10 pillars of the Industrial Strategy (long before the paper was published). The hub includes energy-intensive industries; energy generators; innovative research companies; operators of the electric and gas networks; academics and owners of strategic development sites where businesses and supply chains can locate.
The Hub also works closely with supporting local authorities, local enterprise partnerships and universities, fostering collaboration to make the vision a reality. The aim is for Government to help create the right environment where new technologies can fl ourish, unlocking exponential private sector investment to become a magnet for international attention.
UNRIVALLED OPPORTUNITY Already being delivered at pace, there is now an opportunity for the EID to become a whole energy system – a jewel in the crown of the UK’s industrial landscape. It will set the blueprint for how decarbonisation can be linked with regional economic prosperity, ultimately delivering clean growth of national significance. Fostering innovation and investment in low carbon technology, in Cheshire alone the EID will:

SP Energy Networks drives electric transport forward with Charge Project When Ofgem announced earlier last month that the UK needed a network that could support 10 million electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030, motorists were not the only ones to take notice. SP Energy Networks (SPEN) and its partners in the Charge Project are already a year into an extensive four-year programme to accelerate deployment of public charging infrastructure across the SP-MANWEB region. The Charge Project brings together experts from transport planning and electricity networks, as well as charging-technology innovators, to translate the vision for easy EV charging into a reality for drivers in West Cheshire, North Wales, and Merseyside. The government is looking to speed up the transition away from fossil fuels as early as 2032 and implement the “road to zero”, a long-term strategy to transition to zeroemission road transport. For this, reliable, readily available on-street and other publicly accessible charge points will require well-planned decisions now from property developers, forecourt operators, local authorities, and electricity networks. SPEN is bringing these stakeholders together to encourage informed investment based on research into vehicle demand and consumer driving habits.
While it is expected that the majority of EV charging will take place at home and in the workplace, there will also be a need for on-street charging, as well as facilities for charging at public destinations such as leisure and shopping centres, tourist attractions, and fillingstation forecourts. Through the Charge Project, SPEN will gain better understanding of how increased demand for electricity from transport will impact the network, considering locations, the hardware installed, usage patterns, and whether smart charging arrangements can be used. The Charge Project’s research will benefit regional development, giving West Cheshire and North Wales businesses, infrastructure investors, and local authorities a head start on planning to accommodate the growing number of EV drivers working in, living in, and visiting the region.
THREE COMMON QUESTIONS How will the growth of electric vehicles change the relationship between transport planning and the electricity network over the next 30 years? The Charge Project is modelling how, where, and when the uptake of EVs will impact the electricity network. The transport model built by project partner PTV estimates the potential volume of EVs that will drive on the road network in the SP-MANWEB licence area; where they are likely to park and for how long; and the distances these vehicles are likely to travel. These results will be presented as “heat maps” from 2020 to 2050, which will show how demand for charging could increase with time across the region.
What smart charging solutions will be able to coexist with, and eventually replace, the petrol and diesel filling stations that drive the refuelling industry today? As investors and developers look to make the major capital investments necessary to ensure timely, cost-effective development of driverfocused EV infrastructure in the region, Charge Project partner Smarter Grid Solutions is developing, trialling and assessing the role of various smart charging solutions for EV infrastructure. Practically and economically, smart charging solutions to maximise use of existing electricity network infrastructure will cut down on the cost and disruption of connecting charge points. Developing and trialling smart charging solutions now will ensure modern charge points are future-proofed and able respond to external signals to avoid network overloads. The trials the Charge Project will conduct over the next 24 months will assess the performance of a range of smart charging solutions and their impact on customers’ ability to charge their EVs and the business case for investors.
How will electric vehicle infrastructure providers access the learning from the Charge Project? The Charge Project’s research and technology trials will culminate in the “ConnectMore” web app. Currently being developed by EA Technology, the tool will offer infrastructure providers a simple, user-friendly interface with which to find information. It will be able to give the likely demand for chargers at any location, the type of charger or chargers required, the available network capacity, connection options based on smart charging solutions, and an indicative cost for each of the connection options. ConnectMore will encourage wider deployment of EV chargers by bringing together the key considerations for an installation into a single app. It will also enable customers to make their own connection assessments, explore multiple options, and consider the cost implications quickly.
36
The Charge Project has a big vision to prepare the region for a future driven by electric vehicles. SPEN and its partners are working alongside regional stakeholders at each step; they recognise the opportunity to access valuable information that will help shape the deployment of chargers on the road and across the electricity network. Working together with investors, local authorities, forecourt owners, and developers, the Charge Project will deliver a viable, best-in-class model to show how EV charging infrastructure can develop rapidly and deliver economic and environmental benefits across the UK.

EQUALITY & DIVERSITY
Supporting diversity can benefit the bottom line One of the biggest challenges facing businesses today is the need to ensure that their workforces represent the varied communities they serve.
40
Research suggests that supporting equality and diversity in the workplace is not just ‘a good thing to do’ but that it can benefit the bottom line as well, making businesses more attractive to would-be employees and customers alike.
According to the study compiled for office brokering service Instant Offices, millennials will make up approximately 75% of the worldwide workforce by 2025, occupying a growing number of leadership roles.
For example, a recent survey suggested that diversity is particularly important to the generation that will inherit the business world, both in the workplace and when making their purchasing choices.
About half of all millennial jobseekers said they were prioritising a culture of diversity and inclusion when choosing prospective employers, based on companies’ attitude to things like gender issues.
According to Instant Offices, the treatment of women in the workplace is very important to younger people. The researchers say that studies show that 40% of people believe that men are likely to be hired over women, while further research shows that men are also 30% more likely to be promoted to a managerial position with many earning more than women. About half of all millennial jobseekers say that the way a company deals with
EQUALITY & DIVERSITY LGBTQ issues is also important. Research from Engagement Labs, quoted in the study by Instant Offices, shows growing support for both the online and offline success of brands which support the LGBTQ community. Indeed, says Instant Offices, ‘belief-driven buying’ has gone mainstream, with 60% of consumers wanting brands to make it easier for them to see their values and positions on important issues. In 2018, the Earned Brand Report, which covered markets in the UK, USA, Brazil, China, France, Germany, India and Japan, revealed that: n 1 in 2 people will choose, change or boycott brands based on their stance on specific social issues n Japan saw the most significant yearon-year growth in belief-driven buying, with a 21% increase. This was closely followed by the UK, with 20% year-onyear growth. Further studies have also revealed that companies with a diversity performance that is above average see a 45% increase in innovation, while those who are below average see a 26% increase. Other advantages of having a diverse workforce, says the report, include: n Increased creativity: People from different backgrounds tend to have different perspectives and experiences, creating a melting pot of new ideas n Reduced employee turnover: Companies that are dedicated to building a diverse workforce benefit from better employee retention and higher employee engagement
n Ensure there is a diverse pool of candidates when interviewing for positions n Encourage conversations around diversity and continuously look for ways to address any lack of diversity within your company n Work towards creating a workplace culture where people from all backgrounds feel comfortable and safe n Look for ways to partner with other companies that are known for diverse leadership.
More than half of female UK entrepreneurs ‘experience gender bias’ Recent research published by HSBC Private Banking reveals that half of female entrepreneurs in the UK believe that they experience gender bias when raising capital for their business.
HSBC’s research found that 70% of UK female entrepreneurs said they found raising capital the most challenging part of the process; more than half (53%) of female founders are denied funding, and those that secure it, receive 6% less than their male counterparts. This gender imbalance is also reflected in the make up of pitch panels. Although the UK has the most all-women investor panels (13%), it also has the lowest percentage of mixed panels (47%) across all markets. Despite the pressures of raising capital, the UK’s female founders are determined to succeed. The research shows that they are the second most confident entrepreneurs globally behind mainland China. Kirsty Moore, Managing Director at HSBC UK Private Banking in the UK, said: “It is concerning that half of female entrepreneurs in this country have experienced bias when trying to raise capital for their businesses. “This research shows how far we have to go to level the playing field for women to fulfil their ambitions.”
According to the report, when pitching for investment female entrepreneurs say they are asked questions about their family circumstances (44%), their credibility as business leaders and their attitude to loss prevention (41%).
Victoria Peppiatt, UK entrepreneur and co-founder of Phrasee, said: “This report shows the barriers female entrepreneurs face when trying to grow businesses. It’s important that institutions with the capacity to bring about change, like HSBC, continue to highlight these issues and draw attention to the ways in which gender bias can be overcome.
The research found large differences across markets with female entrepreneurs in the UK saying that they experience the highest levels of gender bias, followed by the USA.
“Mixed panels, more access to networking opportunities and a commitment from investors to review their investment choices are just some of the ways we can achieve more parity.”
n Better company reputation: A diverse and inclusive workplace can boost a company’s reputation and brand, making the company more ‘human’ and socially responsible. According to the Instant Offices report, there are a few ways that companies can ensure a diverse and tolerant environment:

HEALTH & WELLBEING
Initiative seeks to improve health in the workplace Businesses have joined forces with mental health charities and non-governmental organisations in the most widespread collaboration of its kind to promote a nationwide commitment on improving mental health care in the workplace. 42
HEALTH & WELLBEING
Thirty of the UK’s most recognised businesses and organisations have signed up to the Mental Health At Work Commitment. The ambition is to encourage employers of all sizes to improve standards of mental health care among the workforce. Developed with mental health charities, leading employers and trade organisations, the Commitment provides a framework for employers who recognise the importance of promoting staff wellbeing. The framework sets out six clear standards based on what best practice has shown is needed to make a difference and better equip employers to create an environment where employees can thrive. They are: n Prioritise mental health in the workplace by developing and delivering a systematic programme of activity n Proactively ensure that organisational culture drives positive mental health outcomes n Promote an open culture around mental health n Increase organisational confidence and capability n Provide mental health tools and support n Increase transparency and accountability through internal and external reporting Signatories to the campaign span sectors including banking, utilities, retail and professional services. They are joined by a range of trade bodies and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sports. The recent Mental Health at Work YouGov survey conducted for Business in the Community (BITC) and Mercer Marsh Benefits shows only 51% of respondents say they feel comfortable talking about
mental health in the workplace, and two in five (39%) say they have experienced a work-related mental health issue in the last year. While many employers have been responding to the growing demands, dedicating significant resource to tackling the issue, those behind the initiative say that there is often duplication and confusion and that the Commitment seeks to share best practice that can be activated among employers at all levels. Sir Ian Cheshire, Chairman of the Thriving at Work Leadership Council and Chairman of Barclays UK, said: “There are no quick fixes, or simple solutions when it comes to mental health. Yet there’s no ignoring the fact that work is often a contributory factor for people whose mental health is suffering. As employers, there are lots of things we can do that can make a difference to how our employees feel at work.
and Group Director, Commercial Banking, Lloyds Banking Group, said: “The research showing how people are feeling in the workplace should be concerning for all of us. With one in four people experiencing a mental health problem in any given year, it’s likely that many of our colleagues may be struggling, and we have a responsibility to take action. “We would encourage all businesses to challenge themselves on what more they can do to protect and support the health and wellbeing of their colleagues.”
“The six standards we are setting out are based on what best practice has shown is needed to make a difference. If every employer in the country signed up, we could have a meaningful impact on millions of employees across the UK.” Paul Farmer, CEO of Mind, said: “It’s great to see so many employers take proactive steps towards creating mentally healthy workplaces by engaging with The Mental Health at Work Commitment. With issues like stress, anxiety and depression common across all employers, regardless of size or sector, we want to see every employer recognise and address any work-related causes of poor mental health among their staff. “The Commitment comes with resources available to help employers prevent poor mental health and promote wellbeing. Smart, responsible employers recognise that staff who feel valued and supported tend to be more productive and are less likely to take time off sick or leave the organisation.” David Oldfield, Chair of the Wellbeing Leadership Team, Business in the Community

AN INSIGHT INTO
An insight into…Remsdaq Ltd new trends and integration requirements. In the security division this means adapting to the challenges posed by biometrics and facial recognition, whilst also developing software for building-wide lockdowns to tackle marauding terrorists.
Blue Lights; Incident Management Software
Like many companies, Remsdaq is not well known outside its core business, but the chances are that one or more of our products may have made your day safer than it could have been. Operating from our Flintshire headquarters, we have been pushing the boundaries of technology for over 40 years. Whether developing advanced monitoring and control devices for electricity substation automation, writing software for the fire & rescue services or manufacturing access control and perimeter intrusion detection systems, we look to engineer solutions that are ‘world-class’ and solve everyday infrastructure management problems.
UK Electricity Supplies: helping to keep the ‘Lights On’ The 1970s is known as the decade that “dimmed the lights”. Power cuts were common in the UK, as Prime Minister Edward Heath took on the miners and as a result, coal supplies to power stations were disrupted. In 1974, Remsdaq were manufacturing telemetry equipment for use within the electricity and mining industries. Today, there are over 55,000 Remsdaq Callisto Remote Terminal Units (RTU), the modern equivalent of telemetry equipment, installed in substations worldwide, where they are used to provide operational information and automatic switching between substations to prevent power outages. Demand for electricity is rising globally and supply grids are becoming more complex. Most countries have growing populations with an increased reliance on the internet
and mobile communications. Some, like the UK, are moving away from petrol and diesel-powered transportation systems to electric vehicles and a growing reliance for their power security on renewables and energy storage. These changes are making grids more complex and driving demand for the types of SCADA RTU manufactured by Remsdaq, both in the UK and overseas.
People and Buildings; security and terrorist threats Just how do you manage and control the flow of people into a building and provide them with an energy-efficient and healthy environment? Whilst small offices may only need access for 2-3 people a day, on a busy day a central-London museum can receive over 25,000 visitors, and that doesn’t include staff and security teams. Remsdaq looked to solve some of these problems in the 1980s with the launch of its integrated security products including StarWatch access control for enterprise projects and Sabre, a fibre-optic based perimeter intrusion detection system. Over the years, products have been enhanced to meet security challenges and some configurations have achieved CPNI (Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure) certification. CPNI-status allows Remsdaq systems to be used within high security and government buildings both in the UK and overseas. In 2015, the company also launched a new access control platform - EntroWatch - for smart buildings.
Our third division is responsible for Resque 4i, an incident management platform for the Fire & Rescue services. Again, this is a constantly developing area as Remsdaq implements new technologies. One of the latest is ‘What3Words’ which allows the general public to report their exact locations using a unique combination of 3 words. These are converted into accurate geographic co-ordinates; extremely important to the emergency services looking to reduce response times.
Internet of Things Enabled Applications So, what does the future hold for Remsdaq? The Internet of Things (IoT) is driving new product development at Remsdaq. In 2019 there were a reported 20 billion connected devices worldwide, exchanging information for a range of management and control purposes. This is forecast to rise to 75 billion by 2025 driven by 5G and Edge device deployment. Remsdaq sees the IoT as a central platform for all its product sets. By the end of 2020, the company plans to launch the first in a new series of DIN-rail mount products with both local and Cloud-based software. “We want to be one of the most agile companies in our sectors”, commented Remsdaq Managing Director, Ray Colston. “The future is very exciting and will see us take Remsdaq further into intelligent building and smart city applications. It’s a wonderful time for people to join our journey and help shape the future.” n The Remsdaq Callisto Remote Terminal Unit

Managing Director City District Ltd (Fazenda and Picanha)
Can you give us a brief overview of your role and company?
How has the company grown in recent years?
I am the Managing Director of City District Ltd and have grown with the business since the start. I co-founded Fazenda back in 2010 working as a manager in our first restaurant in Leeds. After working hard for a few years, we then opened Picanha in Chester back in 2016.
We are a very young company maturing at a natural pace. We believe that if you care about your team, brand and product, growth needs to be sustainable. This way, we get more experience, learning from our mistakes to move forward.
Can you tell us a short overview of an average day at work? Every day is different! I usually plan my week ahead. I also like keeping up to date with what’s happening in each restaurant daily, so I make sure I catch up with my emails and read the handovers first thing. I take the children to school and head to the restaurant I’m visiting. I usually go by train, as I can work there, but if I’m driving to the Head Office, I like making some calls and catching up with Robert (my business partner). I like spending some time talking to him, as he helps me put my thoughts together. As well as meeting lots of people (team members, suppliers, stakeholders), I often have to host events at our restaurants, which I really enjoy. It allows me to meet amazing people and build great relationships. It’s hard to completely switch off when you love what you do and so many people rely on you, so sometimes I’ll be working until 10pm after the kids have gone to bed.
What is the history behind the traditional gaúcho-style grilling and Rodizio dining that Picanha is famous for? The gaúchos are the ‘cowboys’ of South America, who brought the Rodizio style of cooking and serving meat into the restaurant world. After herding cattle all day, they would cook meat pierced on wooden skewers by the fire, carving it as and when it was ready and sharing it with others.

We’re celebrating our 10th anniversary this year, and we are very proud of what we have achieved in this time. We have built a business with strong foundations and values and have also grown into six venues. Most people don’t realise how hard it is to run a multi-site business, and how much it takes to open new restaurants. Thankfully, having no openings in 2019 helped us focus on the day-to-day of the business.
sake of growing. We take our business growth as a responsibility, not as a goal. We don’t want to make mistakes that could affect our teams. Therefore, before going ahead with a new opening we take our time. We really think things through and discuss them a million times. Right now, we would only open a new restaurant if it’s an opportunity we could not miss. The positive side is that we can continue focusing on being better at what we do daily.
Have you faced any particular challenges recently? We face challenges constantly. It may be due to the nature of our industry, or that most within our teams don’t really like their comfort zone! So, when challenges don’t come to us, we create them ourselves. This takes a toll on the team unfortunately. However, I prefer addressing that problem than having people who are complacent and bored at work. Having said that, the biggest challenges we’ve faced lately were varied. Opening two restaurants in the same year (2018) in opposite ends of the country wasn’t easy. Brexit has posed all sorts of issues to our industry, and managing our systems and procedures as we grow can be difficult too.
What are your plans for the future? We believe everyone wants to feel special, and our main goal is to do precisely that for our guests. We want to continue growing our business, bringing our dining experience to more people, maybe even outside of the UK too one day. However, we wouldn’t grow for the
