Envirolink Northwest Envirolink Northwest is the Energy and Environmental Technologies and Services (EETS) sector development organisation in England’s Northwest. A not-for-profit organisation, Envirolink Northwest is supported by the Northwest Regional Development Agency to improve the competitiveness of the region’s EETS sector and to ensure North West companies realise the business opportunities this sector offers. Envirolink Northwest is working to position the region as the market leader in the supply, development and use of energy-saving goods and services. We aim to help drive and raise the profile of the energy efficiency sector in England’s Northwest by: Promoting the sector in regional, national and international markets Providing support to organisations in the development and commercialisation of energy efficient technologies and services Increasing the levels of innovation, knowledge and technology transfer within the sector As energy prices rise consumers are searching for ways to mitigate the increasing strain on their bottom line. Energy efficiency offers a means of reducing energy consumption whilst maintaining and optimising performance, which is vital for businesses to remain competitive. England’s Northwest has the knowledge, skills and experience to serve you and your business. The Carbon Trust Energy Efficiency Loan Scheme The Carbon Trust is an independent company set up in 2001 by government in response to the threat of climate change, to accelerate the move to a low-carbon economy. The Carbon Trust works with organisations to reduce carbon emissions by providing businesses and the public sector with expert advice, finance and accreditation to help them reduce their carbon footprint and to stimulate demand for low-carbon products and services. Since 2001, the Carbon Trust has helped UK businesses save over 23 million tonnes of CO² and more than £1.4 billion, and aims to help customers across the private and public sectors to cut a further 17 million tonnes of CO² in the next three years. In 2008 alone, the Carbon Trust supported half a million UK businesses, saving companies up to £227 million in their annual energy bills and cutting up to 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from their annual emissions. The Carbon Trust is helping the UK become a global hub for low-carbon innovation. We do this through funding and managing projects, investing and collaborating on low-carbon technologies and by identifying market barriers and practical ways to overcome them. Its work on commercialising new technologies will save over 24 million tonnes of carbon a year by 2050. The Carbon Trust is undertaking world-leading projects in the offshore wind, marine energy, biomass, CHP, algae and advanced solar power sectors.
The Carbon Trust’s unsecured, interest-free loans can be used by small and medium-sized businesses for replacement equipment costing between £3,000 and £400,000. The loans are designed to pay for themselves through direct energy savings; the savings made on energy bills more than cover the loan repayments, so that once the loan is repaid, savings go straight to the bottom line. This means that businesses benefit from brand new equipment, increased efficiency and reduced running costs, at no expense to themselves. The Big Business Refit is therefore helping to drive the UK’s move to a lowcarbon economy. Help is also available for public sector organisations in the North West looking to cut down on their energy spend. The government, in partnership with Salix, the Carbon Trust’s public sector funding body, is providing £51.5 million in interest-free loans to help public sector organisations replace old equipment with newer, more energy efficient equipment.
Loan Scheme As energy costs rise and businesses struggle to survive the recession, the search for new ways to proactively increase efficiency and reduce costs is more important than ever. With the recent launch of the Big Business Refit campaign, the Carbon Trust aims to help businesses scrap their old power-guzzling equipment and replace with new equipment that is more efficient and cheaper to run. Expert guidance is also provided, plus financial support in the form of £100 million in interest-free funding, which can be paid back with the energy savings the new equipment delivers. The North West has made a great start with the Big Business Refit so far – since spring this year, North West businesses have saved over £600,000 in their energy bills by replacing old equipment using the loans fund. With a limited fund of £100 million available, the Big Business Refit is expected to help up to 3,000 UK businesses save a total of £40 million in their annual energy costs. With this in mind, we would urge all North West businesses to contact the Carbon Trust to find out if they are eligible for the interest-free cash.

Despite the funding available, over half of North West businesses are ‘making do and mending’ old, inefficient equipment because they don’t have the cash to upgrade it. Also, 55 per cent wait until their equipment breaks down completely before replacing it. The problem of power-guzzling equipment is costing businesses £3.3 billion a year in wasted energy.
