Regeneration and reg In recent years, Hounslow and surrounding boroughs in west London have benefited from a range of regeneration projects, from the creation of a 17,250-capacity stadium for Brentford Football Club to the development of thousands of affordable homes. As new buildings light up the local skyline, it’s only right that the innovation behind so many of these regeneration projects should be celebrated. On June 16, there’ll be a chance to do exactly that at the Regeneration & Regrowth Conference, hosted by West London Local Chambers at Holiday Inn London, Brentford Lock. This two-part event will mark the many developments across the borough and inform delegates about exciting projects that are underway in the area. Karen continues: “Hounslow was one of the hardest-hit boroughs in the country by the social and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. We’ve been working alongside our communities to support and
growth empower them through recovery. Following on from the success of the council’s £20 ShopLocal resident voucher, our recent free Innovate and Grow enterprise support programme engaged with more than 760 different established businesses and startups in Hounslow. The extensive support programme, funded by the government’s COVID-19 Additional Restriction Grant, set out to help businesses get back on track and re-establish the confidence to grow and expand their businesses in the heart of Hounslow, boosting income, profits, and protecting and creating local jobs.

Dan Barnett, a Feltham mobile bike mechanic entered The Hounslow High Street Start-Up Competition 2022 with the hope of bringing to life his idea for a permanent bike repair workshop and one-stop-shop for local cyclists in the Hounslow Borough. Dan was selected as one of the lucky winners and with support from the Centre Feltham he turned his ideas into reality. Utilising one of our large vacant units, Dan opened a bicycle repair shop which has proved to be very successful. Due to the size of the unit, he was able to offer local schoolchildren cycling lessons on a purposebuilt track within the unit.
The Centre Feltham shopping centre, located in the heart of Feltham and currently owned by Aviva Life and Pensions UK Ltd, was approached early this year by Save the High Street.org to see if they could provide support with their annual competition which gives 3 local businesses the opportunity to grow their business by way of opening a temporary Pop-up-shop. What’s an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a genuine job and under all circumstances an apprentice will be employed from day one. Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study. An apprentice will: – work alongside experienced staff – gain job-specific skills – earn a wage and get holiday pay – be given time for study related to their role (the equivalent of one day a week)
– Earn a real wage; – Be trained in the skills employers want; – Set yourself up for the future – apprentices enjoy marked salary increases when they complete their training, and those completing a higher apprenticeship could see increased earnings of an estimated £150,000 over their lifetime.*

What levels are there?
All apprenticeships include elements of on the job and off the job training, leading to industry recognised standards or qualifications. Some apprenticeships also require an assessment at the end of the programme to assess the apprentice`s ability and competence in their job role.

Brand new Logistics Sortation Apprenticeship scheme at West Thames college Tuffnells, a courier for large shipments within the UK and abroad, has signed the first candidate for the Department of Education’s brand-new Express Logistics Sortation Apprenticeship scheme, at West Thames College.
These areas are:
1. Business - Areas include Marketing, IT help desk, Management, Business admin, customer services and more. 2. Logistics – Help close the skills gap in this area by providing on the job training and progression routes to replace an aging workforce.
West Thames will be working with the Department for work and Pensions (DWP) to offer Sector based work academy programme (SWAP) for sortation roles with Tuffnells as the employer. Each apprentice will receive bespoke training, work experience on site, as well as guaranteed interviews after the completion of the scheme.

Shafali Shown-Keen, McDonald’s franchisee A marriage made in heaven
old retiree who just wants to have a coffee and a chat. It’s brilliant and I don’t regret doing this – not one bit.”
Mathematics graduate Shafali Shown-Keen has always had a good head for figures – a useful attribute if you’re going to start your own business. Now she has done just that, becoming the Brentford franchisee of global food retail giant McDonald’s in April 2021 and overseeing its financial growth throughout a testing last 12 months.
Shafali’s current venture is world away from her former career in finance. After graduating with a maths degree from King’s College London, she landed a job as an analyst for Allco Finance Group. She stayed there for more than six years before working in finance roles at construction and engineering giant Costain, where she eventually became head of corporate activity and strategy.
Shafali says: “I always wanted my own business. I’d explored many ideas but nothing that would warrant leaving my job, which came with a good salary. That was until the McDonald’s opportunity came along.
“My parents had a sports and snooker club in Chiswick for 30 years. They had a passion for people, which rubbed off on me. When I started my business, I knew I wanted a customer-focused venture, one that would allow me to mix with people from all walks of life. At McDonald’s, your next customer could be a 16-year-old on his school lunchbreak or a 75-year-
“I was responsible for leading Costain’s merger, acquisition and strategy team,” she says. “I managed the group’s strategic development and delivery of acquisitions in line with Costain’s business strategy, which was to provide world-class engineering services to customers by delivering national infrastructure.
“When the McDonald’s opportunity came along, it made sense just to go for it. I knew I’d be working for a wellestablished brand and receive strong support. The interviews were tough – the whole process
took about nine months, then I spent a further nine months completing the training. It was necessary, though, as there was so much to learn. If you’re going to marry someone, you need to invest sufficient time and effort to ensure you’re both right for each other. Now I can look back and say McDonald’s and I are a really good fit. “I had to convince them that I had a good business brain and show them that I had good connections in the local community. McDonald’s is very keen on building community links and supporting local worthy causes. Once I had demonstrated this, I got the opportunity to run the Brentford franchise.” It has been a whirlwind couple of years for Shafali but her hard work is paying dividends. The business is now in a healthier position: turnover and customer satisfaction have both risen, food is being delivered quicker and staff retention is higher.
“I have about 120 staff to manage so this job keeps me busy,” says Shafali. “Eventually I’d like to own a string of restaurants, but I’d need a leadership team
in place as I’d have 600-800 employees to look after. A lot of people respect the McDonald’s brand. Over the last few years we have made a number of changes to improve our offering to customers. We’ve introduced healthier foods such as salads and fruit bags, and our plantbased McPlant burger has been a huge success. And last year the company also announced plans to be Net Zero carbon by 2040.” As well as running the restaurant, Shafali works hard to develop and strengthen McDonald’s links with the local community. She says: “We’ve done local litter picks and made donations to foodbanks. We’ve also provided mentoring and work experience for young people, and completed tree maintenance and lighting installation projects.
“I’m also a huge supporter of women in business. I do a lot of talks to encourage more females into leadership roles in companies. You need role models and the more we’re out there spreading the message, the quicker attitudes will change.”

How do you spend your downtime? I do not get much, but when I do I like to run and catch up with family and friends. What are your key strengths as a manager? I asked my team and they said I care about my people. I’m always there for them and willing to help out whenever they need me. And your limitations? I’m always striving to do better. I know this doesn’t sound like a limitation but it causes me endless sleepless nights and puts a lot of pressure on my staff. Best thing about doing business in the borough? The support provided by local councillors, the Chamber and local neighbours. Famous person you’d most like to spend dinner with? Elon Musk to understand his next invention and where it will take us. Most interesting fact about yourself? I’m a fully trained dancer in the North Indian classical dance, Kathak.

However, by building these homes we made a tangible difference to hundreds of families’ lives. “As leader, I made it a priority to strengthen the relationship between businesses and Hounslow Council – working very closely and in partnership with Hounslow Chamber of Commerce. With Brentford FC and London Irish based at Brentford Community Stadium, Hounslow is firmly on the map as a place that people want to work, visit and live. Before becoming a councillor, he worked in the NHS for 39 years – most recently as head of facilities for Great Ormond’s Street. He retired from the NHS five years

“The most difficult part about being leader was that you never knew what was coming over
the horizon. When you’re a leader of a council, you’re on call 24/7. Councils also have a huge responsibility to protect the most vulnerable in our society – whether that be children in care or vulnerable adults. This always presented us with challenges; however, protecting the vulnerable was always a top priority for me, never more so than during the pandemic. The thing I most enjoyed about being leader was handing over the keys to a resident who was moving into her new council home. Back in February, I met a single mum who had recently moved into a council home we had built in Feltham. She was so grateful for the home we had provided for and her baby. Her positive experience makes this job worthwhile. One thing I never expected about being leader was the depth and complexity of the role. The pandemic certainly presented itself with unexpected challenges for me. However, I can honestly say it brought out the best in the borough. Whether it was supporting residents with food parcels or offering support packages to local businesses severely hit – all parts of the borough came together to make a difference. If I could say one thing to the next leader it would be: stick to your values. Deliver what you said you were going to deliver. Being leader of a council certainly requires perseverance, so keep persevering! Enjoy the role and have fun. I certainly did.

Ram Varma FCCA advises on Capital Gains Tax Ram Varma has been advising clients on their personal and business tax positions for a number of years. A common area of confusion for clients, that Ram regularly demystifies, is that of capital gains tax, relating to both residential property and cryptoassets. The gains and just as importantly, the losses on cryptoassets must be included on the annual personal tax return. The calculations can be complex to ensure all tax reliefs are claimed for, including past losses.
How much tax is payable on the sale of an inherited property?
What does HMRC require on the sale of a residential property and what are the deadlines? When a UK residential property is sold HMRC require a report from the seller of the capital gains tax calculation and payment of the capital gains tax within 60 days of the completion date. Importantly, the tax year in which it will be included on the tax return is determined by the exchange date. The report submission process is not as easy as it should be and Ram assists clients with setting up the required online capital gains tax account for UK property. The details and the figures then also need to be included as normal on the client’s personal tax return after the end of the tax year. This is to ensure that the tax calculated is still at the correct tax rate once all other income sources for the tax year have been included.
What are the tax requirements for cryptoassets gains? There has been considerable chatter about cryptoassets and the related tax liabilities that may be accruing for those with gains on their investments. In most cases, the tax treatment is that of capital gains tax as opposed to income tax, which is either taxed at 10% or 20%, depending on the client’s total income from all sources, very similar to the tax treatment of share investments.
When a property is inherited, the beneficiary (the new owner) has a starting (probate) value, instead of the usual purchase price for use in the future capital gains calculation. If the property is eventually sold, there will be a capital gains calculation to prepare unless the property has been lived in by the beneficiary as their main home for the entire period since inheriting the property. Tax is calculated using the probate value, the selling price, the associated costs such as agent fees, renovation costs, solicitor fees etc. There will be other reliefs such as primary resident relief to claim if the property has been lived in for part of the ownership period as a main home. Again, tax would be payable within 60 days and the capital gains for UK property tax account would need to be set up and a report submitted to HMRC.
What tax reliefs are there for properties let out when they are sold? Having owned a rental property that the client has let out for a number of years, they will be required to calculate and pay capitals gains tax to HMRC, again within the 60 day period from the date of completion along with the submission of the figures via the online UK Property capital gains tax account. There are tax reliefs available if this property was at some point the main home of the client, this is primary residence relief. There is also a relief for the last 9 months of ownership that is deemed to be occupied by the client if it was at some point elected to be their main home. There is no longer a relief called ‘lettings relief’ unless the client lived in the property during the tenancy, put another way, during the period in which the property was let to
tenants. This is an unlikely scenario, hence the loss of this relief in most cases.
Are the capital tax rules different for separated and divorced couples when selling the marital home? The rules on capital gains tax are somewhat adjusted for separated couples to ease the tax burden that would arise if the normal rules were applied to those who were no longer living in a property due to marital circumstances changing. For example, if for separation of asset purposes, it is decided that a transfer of asset/s will be required from one spouse to another, this can still be done without any tax consequences in the first year of permanent separation, there is no requirement to be living together at the time of transfer. Usually the family home is the principal private residence and a gain on its sale is exempt from tax. Issues can arise if more than one property is owned and depending on which spouse moves out of the family home, whether they buy or rent in the meantime and who owns the original family home after the divorce can affect tax. After the first year of separation and before the decree absolute transfers between spouses will be deemed at market value and tax may be payable. However there are exemptions, especially where the family home is transferred or sold within 18 months of separation, or where the transfer is after 18 months but is part of a financial settlement, or the property was the main or only home and the departing spouse has not yet elected any other property as their main home.

UK Export growth is stagnant so firms look for new overseas markets for future growth – your Chamber can help Your Chamber’s West London Export Club is renowned for their award-winning exporting expertise, with many companies based there managing to trade successfully in overseas markets, after all £400bn of goods travel through Heathrow airport and its surrounding cargo hubs annually. However, it has been a tough time for exporters. A survey of more than 2,700 UK exporters has revealed that export sales growth has been effectively stagnant for the past year. The British Chambers of Commerce’s quarterly Trade Confidence Outlook showed that the proportion of exporters reporting increased overseas sales was unchanged from Q4 at 29%, while those reporting a decrease rose one point to 25%. The data showed that manufacturers were more likely to report increased export sales than either business-to-business (B2B) service firms (such as lawyers or accountants) or business-toconsumer (B2C) service firms (such as online clothing stores). Conversely, though, B2B service exporters were more likely

than either manufacturers or B2C service exporters to expect profitability to increase in the coming year. Responding to the findings, William Bain, head of trade policy at the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “This data confirms our concerns – that for the last year there was a broadly flat picture for UK exports. This is in contrast with the performance of our near neighbours, with Germany’s exports both within and outside the Single Market steaming ahead by double-digit margins and with trade losses from the pandemic already effectively recovered.
“UK exporters are facing the headwinds of higher red tape costs from trading with the EU, raised raw material pressures, and ongoing issues in global
shipping markets. If we are to realise the aspirations of the UK government’s Export Strategy then 2022 has to be the year where these structural factors holding back our exporters are addressed.
A quarterly survey of more than a thousand companies that trade overseas showed that 37 per cent named international markets as sources of growth, compared with only 34 per cent citing the UK market.

It’s the first time since the Santander UK trade barometer research began in 2017 that overseas markets have trumped the domestic market as the main driver for company growth.
Another survey has also pinpointed international markets as a key driver of future growth for companies. Mike Fraser MP Minister for Exports said “There are vast areas of untapped export potential across the UK. One in seven firms with a turnover over £500k are not exporting and could be”

South East Leads the UK’s Regional Recovery
London and the South East are set to record the country’s fastest annual improvement in economic performance over the next three years. That’s according to EY’s latest Regional Economic Forecast, measured by Gross Value Added (GVA). It shows that London will grow 3.1% per year between now and 2025, and the South East will grow 2.9%. Both are ahead of the UK average of 2.8%. A diverse mix of sectors will drive long-term recovery, according to the report, and this is particularly evident in London and the South East.
One opportunity lies in attracting and retaining talent. Companies that offer flexible work attract people living locally as well as those further afield. It means companies can potentially employ people that live beyond the traditional daily commute, enabling them to bring in people with the best skills rather than those who live the closest.
Flexibility Powers Business Growth and Recovery This is positive news for businesses operating in these regions, especially given the abundance of support available for local businesses. One such channel of support comes from, Chamber member, UBC which offers growth support services at The Mille in Brentford. UBC Brentford hosts in excess of 40 small businesses of which some have taken flexible workspace with us since the pandemic started. Why does flexibility matter? Richard Baker, Managing Partner at EY in the South East, noted in the report: “Greater workplace flexibility and the switch by many businesses to hybrid working could help open up more opportunities.”

Over time this enables companies to reduce costly square footage, and means employees spend less by reducing daily commutes. However, companies offering hybrid work need a workspace that can accommodate the ebb and flow of people who use the workplace at different times, and this is where flexible workspace agreements are proving their worth. UBC centres also have onsite coworking space with day passes, enabling clients to utilise overflow space on days when more people use the office than normal. As the UK and its regions bounce back from the impact of Covid-19, flexibility in all forms particularly when it comes to ways of working - is essential to help businesses build financial security, create jobs, and strengthen local economies.
Council creates partnership with Barcelona to connect tech hotspots Hammersmith & Fulham (H&F) Council and Barcelona City Council have announced a new partnership to boost their innovative tech districts. This international agreement will make it easier for both councils to work together and build on their world-class innovation districts – the White City Innovation District and the 22@ District. Both areas are home to many start-ups and scale-ups. This collaboration will also increase foreign investments, especially those in technology and in strategic sectors such as bio and health, and the jobs that are generated in both cities. This new alliance will also include partners such as Imperial College London, the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), the Royal College of Art, universities located in the city of Barcelona and the 22@ Network association.
At the virtual signing agreement, H&F leader Cllr Stephen Cowan, said: “This agreement brings together two powerhouses of the 21st century economy.
“Our industrial strategy is based on partnerships and has already helped to deliver over 6,000 new jobs in the tech, media and medical sectors. So, we’re delighted to now extend such partnerships to likeminded colleagues elsewhere in Europe with whom we have so much in common, including our shared focus in ensuring that all local residents will benefit from inclusive and sustainable economic growth.” Barcelona’s deputy mayor Jaume Collboni said: “This agreement between two of the leading international innovation ecosystems such as 22@ and the White City Innovation District will allow us to generate new synergies to enhance the exchange and mobility of talent, technology and capital between two sister cities in London and Barcelona.”

The business benefits of laughter
Monday morning is hardly the most joyous time in any office or business. It’s a long haul to Friday evening so it’s hardly surprising that not everyone is smiling or laughing. But does it have to be that way? It makes sense that a happier staff would be more productive, communicate better and be more cohesive as a team. But what can be done to achieve this? It’s probably too much to ask of a CEO but for a CHO (chief happiness officer), getting employees to smile and laugh at life, work and everything else is the very essence of the job! This is not to throw pie in anybody’s face or pie in the sky. There’s a growing body of evidence that employing a CHO could be a smart move for any business. A study at the University of Warwick showed that happier employees are 12% more productive. Meanwhile, St Edwards University reports that “an Australian industry-wide study of 2,500 employees found that 81% believe that a fun working environment would make them more productive, and 93% said that laughing on the job helps to reduce work-related stress. A further 55% said they would take less pay to have more fun at work.” I look forward to future studies showing
that happier employees take fewer days off due to illness. Companies and corporations that have joined the trend to appoint CHOs include Amazon, Google and AirBnB. Usually, they recruit someone with a good sense of humour from the HR department and send them for specific CHO training courses. Small companies, while not being able to afford a full time CHO, can still employ laughter gurus or comedy coaches such as L. Vaughan Spencer, the spoof business coach and alter ego of top improvisational comedian, Neil Mullarkey, whose anthem for business success is: “don’t be needy, be succeedy!” This approach works on two levels. Everyone feels better when laughing at the comedy coach but when you laugh as you learn, you also tend to remember the lesson much better.
As a medical doctor, it’s clear to me that while laughter is not always the best medicine, it has been scientifically proven to reduce stress, improve breathing, increase immunity and raises our endorphins, the natural high-making chemicals in the body. On a psychological level, it’s obviously good for us. Very few of us don’t enjoy a good laugh but humour and reverse psychology can also be used warmly and effectively to get people to laugh at the parts of themselves that are holding them back. The Almost Happy approach uses comedy and reverse psychology in the form of funny, wearable badges such as “Grim Executive”, “Dedicated Commuter”, “Creative Dictator” and many more to satirize aspects of employees that may be keeping them unhappy or only almost happy at work. When we’re encouraged to laugh at the parts

Printing workshop: Royal profiles, June 4 To celebrate the milestone Platinum Jubilee for Queen Elizabeth II, we are taking a look at her iconic profile that has appeared on our stamps and currency for the past seven decades for inspiration. Profiles are stunning, effective and we can’t wait to see your inspired creations! Roaming radio station comes to Chiswick House & Gardens Grow FM, a summer programme of activities and events exploring the theme of “community as health”, is coming to Chiswick House & Gardens this summer. The brainchild of curatorproducers Yinka Danmole and Tadeo Lopez-Sendon, Grow FM is an experimental programme featuring new commissions by local and international artists and a roaming pop-up radio station, powered by the community for the community, broadcasting from Chiswick House & Gardens throughout the summer. Grow FM is inspired by West London pirate radio stations, which became a lifeline for disenfranchised communities in the 1990s, as well as by Victorian Chiswick House & Gardens residents, the Tuke brothers, whose radical approach to mental health centred exchange and dialogue as a means of connecting with their patients.
Grow FM will encourage artists, host participants and audiences to come together physically and online, enabling new conditions for cultural exchange and production to thrive, especially for those groups and communities often overlooked. Supported by the London Borough of Hounslow, as part of its Summer of Culture, the project includes paid placements for three young creatives as trainee audio producers. Tadeo Lopez-Sendon said: “In an age where we witness the erosion of trust and social connections, Grow FM aims to re-centre community at the heart of social life.” Yinka Danmole added: “Inspired by Chiswick House & Gardens’
history, with the Tuke brothers’ radical Victorian approach to mental health practices, the Grow FM programme explores ways of nurturing this precious public space for the local community, for new collectives and for cultural production.” Xanthe Arvanitakis, director of Chiswick House & Gardens Trust, said: “We know firsthand from Growing Together at Chiswick House, our thriving community engagement programme, that a strong sense of community is integral to our health and mental wellbeing. We’re delighted to be working closely with the local people of Hounslow and this talented group of creatives to support Grow FM for improved health and wellbeing for all of us.”
Wellness event proves to be popular!
Sahara Sisterhood hosted a wellness event for women at the Grasshoppers Rugby Club in Isleworth sponsored by the Metropolitan Police on Thursday March 10, 2022. The organisation said 77 delegates had registered for the event.
A spokesperson for the organisation said: “At Sahara Sisterhood, we always request feedback at the end of the event through an evaluation form that is distributed to all delegates to complete and return to the hosts.
In line with our normal practice, we distributed the evaluation forms to all delegates and these were collated at the end. In addition to the feedback forms,

SEGRO mark 100+2 year anniversary More than 300 people came together in April at the Royal Horticultural Halls in central London to mark 100 years since leading warehousing and industrial property developer SEGRO was established in 1920. However, eagle-eyed readers may notice that the event actually took place on the 102nd anniversary of its foundation after the Covid pandemic delayed proceedings by two years.
The Slough Trading Company, which later became SEGRO, was formed after the First World War following the purchase of a military vehicle repair depot in Slough from the UK government which was used to adapt war-damaged vehicles for civilian use. The founders quickly realised that the company’s long term future would be in the leasing of warehousing and industrial property and as such the Slough Trading Estate was born. Over the decades The Slough Trading Estate became Europe’s largest industrial estate under single ownership, home to hundreds of companies and a corner piece of the local community, and SEGRO has grown its property portfolio, including the
development and acquisition of several properties in the London Borough of Hounslow, to become Europe’s largest property company by value. Hounslow and West London Chambers of Commerce, CEO Alan Rides, and COO Sally Smith, were delighted to be able to attend the evening and share in this milestone celebration.

all three hosts were given encouraging feedback throughout the day. One of the team members is a HR director who has extensive experience in managing this area and is passionate about improving organisational performance and seeking feedback to continuously learn to improve our service. The delegate feedback was overwhelmingly positive and it was the first time Sahara Sisterhood had worked with the Metropolitan Police. The conference was well structured and planned with a variety of activities including presenters, meditation, creativity, music, activities and discussion in breakout sessions. Based on the feedback and comments received on the day, the conference was a huge success. This was achieved by the range of different activities throughout the day involving delegate participation where they were encouraged to present their findings. Overall, the event was a huge success and we had lots of positive feedback. We believe we provide a platform for the Met Police to be introduced and engage with the local communities in a nonconfrontational manner by allowing them to build bigger and stronger relationships with people that need their services. We would propose to host another conference in June, September and December as a very minimum to build upon the relationships between the Metropolitan Police and the community.”
Serving Our Superheroes founder launches new venture It has been two years since Sarah Jane Gardner set up Serving Our Superheroes at the start of the pandemic. It started out as a project to help prevent the cross-contamination of COVID-19, by providing laundry bags to the NHS and other frontline care workers during the pandemic. Serving Our Superheroes now supplies washbags filled with toiletries to the NHS and a host of other items to homeless people, refugees, victims of domestic violence and other people in need. The project has been hugely successful, with more than 153,000 items donated and over 150,000 people supported. Now Sarah has launched a spin-off venture, as she explains.
“We’ve updated our constitution to go international and I’ve sent many dresses abroad in partnership with Dress a Girl around the World, as well as continuing to serve our community locally. Our latest project, to supply trousers to hospitals, has had really good feedback from the hospitals and I’ve been asked for more. As a result, I’ve now set up a spin-off group, Pants for Patients. The hope is to get trousers into hospitals around the world. It’s the little things that make a difference and provide dignity in people’s time of need. We’ve already been providing washbags so that people can clean their teeth and have a shower in hospital. However, imagine you arrive in hospital and you’ve been in an accident and your clothes are ripped, or have had to be cut off.
The hospital gowns are open and don’t afford much dignity. With the trousers, patients can cover up and move around. They’re adjustable to fit all sizes and are loose so they’re easy to get on and off. They’re great for all patients, including those who’ve been in accidents, maternity patients who’ve had an unexpected C-section and need loose trousers, and the elderly who may live alone and have a long stay in hospital with no change of clothes. There are so many people living alone or in poverty so these trousers can help. I started as a teacher, teaching A Level Accounts, Economics and Business, having completed 3 years in a Sixth Form College prior to this, when I first qualified. I never intended to stay but 23 years later, here I am. What’s kept me here is really simple: our students and staff, who are great. Alongside this, I’ve been lucky enough to have been provided with so many opportunities to grow, develop and take on new challenges.
