to wonder how many times the badge of office has visited Buckingham Palace? . The gong was made to celebrate the Duke of Edinburgh becoming Patron in 1953 and that’s 65-years ago. Imagine my horror when at the Executive Lunch sponsored by O’Keefe, the gong fell apart as I took it out of its silk bag. A quick application of sticky tape held the badge to the collar and I was able to introduce the Deputy Agent General for the Bank of England to the lunch guests without it landing in my lunch. The gong was duly put away and there was just over two weeks until the Garden Party. Then I remembered Maree of London, bespoke jewellers based in Greenwich Market. I quickly took some pictures of the gong, now in two pieces and without the sticky backing tape. I emailed Marie Thompson whom I know and she
came to the rescue. I visited the studio in the historic market and was quickly reassured it could be mended. Four new silver posts were crafted and then lasered to join the badge to the collar. A perfect piece of workmanship by a talented jeweller which enabled us both to represent the Chamber at the Queen’s Garden Party. On page 5 you will read more about the gong and how we took tea at Drury Tea and Coffee at the Royal Arsenal. We had an excellent breakfast meeting in April with the MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford who was Knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. On page 20 read The Rt Hon Sir David Evennett’s article on social mobility. The Chamber was pleased to host two events this quarter with guest speakers from the London Assembly. When the President came to tea Helen McIntosh, the President of the South East London Chamber of Commerce, recently took up the offer to take tea with one of London’s foremost tea blenders and coffee roasters, The Drury Tea & Coffee Company. rury has been blending tea and roasting coffee in London for over 80 years. The business was started in 1936 by three Italian siblings – the Olmi Brothers.
D
Originally based in Drury Lane, from whence it got its name, they relocated to the Royal Arsenal almost exactly three years ago. The Company specialises in selling fine quality teas and coffees for the restaurant trade and the domestic market. It serves some of the best-known Michelin-starred restaurants in London, besides having its own retail shop in Covent Garden. No-one could be better placed, therefore, than Drury to explain the intricacies of large scale tea production to our President on the morning of 8th June. Helen was joined on the factory visit by Peter Wilson, Business Development Director at SELCOC and Meantime Communications CEO, Emma Murray. Naturally, the President
brought her badge of office, which – as readers of these columns will know - she irreverently calls ‘the gong’! They met with Bill Davy, Drury’s Sales Director and Marco Olmi, Commercial Director and grandson of the founder. The visitors were treated to a full factory tour and saw Drury’s new multi-million pound state-of-the-art Brambati coffee roaster and the Fuso line, which packs pyramid teabags. What caught their attention however, was Earl Grey tea. Being real fans of this brew, Helen and Emma in particular, were fascinated to see the tea being scented with oil of Bergamot, which imparts its characteristic taste. There then followed a bench tea cupping session, where
the visitors were able to taste seven different varieties of Drury Earl Grey teas and give their verdict on each. Speaking at the end of the visit, Helen Mcintosh said: “We are fortunate to have a tea and coffee company of the calibre of Drury in our region. Marco and Bill made us very welcome and we learned so much about how tea and coffee is produced in volume. It was fascinating to see the Earl Grey being scented, but rest assured Drury’s secret recipes are safe with us!”.
Ravensbourne becomes “Ravensbourne University London” after being awarded university status Specialist digital media and design institution, Ravensbourne, based on the Greenwich Peninsula, has been awarded university status by the Privy Council and will now become “Ravensbourne University London”. reviously located on Bromley Common and then Chislehurst, Ravensbourne moved to the new purpose-built campus on the Greenwich Peninsula in September 2010. The institution has offered degree level courses for many years which have been validated by University of Arts London. In August of last year Ravensbourne gained Taught Degree Awarding Powers (TDAP) and now has the power to award its own degrees. Awarded a “Silver” in the government’s Teaching and Excellence Framework in 2017, Ravensbourne was commended for its commitment to widening participation and recruiting students from a diverse range of backgrounds, high levels of practice-based approaches to learning such as industry projects, and providing excellent digital resources. It is also ranked in the UK’s top 10 institutions for art and design*.
P
Director, Professor Linda Drew said: “We are delighted to have been awarded the honour of university status by the Privy Council and are very proud to become Ravensbourne University London, a specialist creative institution designed for industry.
“The awarding of university status acknowledges Ravensbourne’s academic integrity as a higher education institution with rigorous standards and academic governance. It’s a further endorsement of the quality (and breadth) of learning offered here.
“This is great news and a just reward for the drive and ambition of the whole institution. “In a landscape of hectic change, Ravensbourne is well positioned for the future. We already have tight relationships with industry and our new university status will help us to become even more intimate with the creative sector that is so important to London and the wider economy.”
Ravensbourne boasts impressive alumni, including fashion designers Stella McCartney and Bruce Oldfield, Kevin Carrigan (creative director of Calvin Klein), literary scholar Robert Hewison, furniture designer Emma Hill, sculptor Alison Wilding and co-designer of the Olympic 2012 torch Jay Osgerby.
“This is the next step in Ravensbourne’s journey. We’ll be driving forward our new academic plan, the Mindsets and Skillsets Manifesto, a promise to nurture and inspire people who are valuable to and valued by the world beyond university.”

Skills shortage continues to hamper businesses The British Chambers of Commerce, in partnership with DHL, recently published its latest Quarterly International Trade Outlook survey, which showed that exporters are being hampered by widespread labour shortages. ccording to researchers, the problem was most acute in manufacturing, where two-thirds of firms struggled to recruit in the first quarter of 2018. Of those recruiting, 66% of manufacturers and 57% of services exporters are struggling to find the right staff, according to the survey of more than 3,300 exporters. In the manufacturing sector, the greatest difficulty was in finding skilled manual and technical labour (66%) and in the services sector, it was professional and managerial level positions (53%). Key findings from the report: • 68% of exporting manufacturers and 53% of services had attempted to recruit in the past three months, of those, nearly twothirds reported difficulty finding staff (66% and 57% respectively) • 42% of exporting manufacturers and 28% of exporting service firms reported increased export sales in Q1. 42% of exporting manufacturers and 25% of exporting service firms reported increased export orders • 45% of exporting manufacturers expect their prices to rise. Of these firms,
A
82% cited raw materials as a cost pressure. 37% of services expect prices to rise
• 56% of exporting manufacturers cite exchange rates as a concern to their business (compared to 66% in the previous quarter), and 42% in the services sector (down from 47%)
• The BCC/DHL Trade Confidence Index, a measure of the volume of trade documentation issued nationally, rose by 2.24% on the quarter. The Index now stands at 126.82 – the second highest level since records began in 2004 Dr Adam Marshall, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said: “ At a time of significant uncertainty and change, it’s pleasing to be able to report that many UK exporters are doing well. Yet many tell us that their future prospects are being constrained because it’s becoming harder and harder to recruit the people they need to grow. “Businesses with global ambitions are facing critical skills gaps at just about every level. The combination of decades of constant change in the training system, declines in immigration, and tight local labour markets are stopping many firms from making key investments.
“A stable training system, a reformed apprenticeship levy, answers to practical questions around Brexit and clarity on the UK’s future immigration regime are urgently needed. Get these right, and exporters all across the UK will take risks, invest and grow. “Price pressures continue to weigh on business, with manufacturers particularly feeling the pinch from costs at the factory gate. While the fall in the pound has provided a boost for some exporters, it’s been a drag for others, who report rising costs for inputs and components. While politicians exhort firms to do their purchasing closer to home, our evidence suggests that for many firms, import substitution isn’t currently a viable option – as many companies simply can’t find or afford the inputs they need on the UK market.”
Ian Wilson, CEO DHL Express UK and Ireland, said: “The positive Trade Confidence Index, increasing by 2.24% on the previous quarter to be the second highest on record, resonates with the success we’re seeing from UK businesses trading internationally. “There are, of course, still many challenges for UK businesses, as this report highlights. The skills shortage is a significant concern, which is why it’s more important than ever to consider your retention strategies and people development programmes. “Brexit is also driving considerable uncertainty, and businesses should broaden their portfolio of international markets to spread risk in these changing times. We join the BCC in pushing for decisions to be made to allow UK exporters to continue trading with confidence, as seamlessly as possible.”

New era beckons for historic building Local building and property development company N. Hillman & Sons have successfully acquired The Royal Bell at 173-177 High Street, Bromley, through The Substantia Group, and are determined to restore the building to its former glory. anaging Director of N. Hillman & Sons, Gary Hillman, said: “I can remember going to family functions at The Royal Bell with my Grandad, the company’s founder, Nelson Hillman, more than 40 years ago. “I remember being in awe of the history and grand interior of the building. I feel it is now fitting, as we are celebrating 80 years of trading this year, that we are now looking forward to restoring the building and once again making it the Jewel of Bromley High Street.”

July 2018
The Royal Bell has been a prominent landmark on Bromley High Street since it was rebuilt in 1898 on the site of an earlier 17th Century hostelry. The Grade II listed building as it stands today was designed by Ernest Newton, a renowned Arts and Crafts movement architect and is historically mentioned in Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice'. For many years, The Royal Bell has been vacant, neglected and has declined into a state of disrepair, with Historic England placing it on the ‘Buildings at Risk’ register. Recent condition reports have estimated the cost
to restore the former coaching inn, to be in excess of £3million. Chamber members Hillmans have employed the acclaimed restoration architect, Benedict O’Looney to design a scheme that works sympathetically with the historic building whilst providing a commercially viable solution to safeguard the buildings future. Working with a specialist hotel consultant Benedict is developing a sustainable scheme that will restore the former coaching inn to a 5-star hotel Bromley can once again be proud of.
Hillmans ambition is that the building will once again play an important part in the local community, and the scheme if realised will offer local artists the opportunity to exhibit within the hotel, and local community groups the opportunity to use the function spaces and facilities. Gary Hillman said: “We hope that the introduction of a 5-star hotel on Bromley High street will help further rejuvenate the area and add to the improvements created by the London Borough of Bromley Council’s investment in Bromley North.”

There is now much improved public space around the entrance and better pedestrian, cycling and vehicle access. The flyover now has footpaths on both sides providing step-free access to the main entrance and the bus stops outside. Further improvement works are planned for the Felixstowe Road and Gayton Road areas around the station. A summer of fun in Erith
Following the success of the Lighthouse and the Greater Erith Spring Trail, the Council and its local partners are putting together a programme of summer events to take place in and around Erith’s pier. The aim is to encourage people into the town centre, to connect with the river, to support local businesses and create pop-up events that residents and visitors can enjoy. One of the events planned is a new street food night – Erith Kitchen - at which residents will be able to sample a range of culinary delights. Rising to the challenges of leadership Councillor Danny Thorpe Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich
have been elected Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich at a particularly challenging time, both inside the borough but also across London and the country. Just like everyone else, we are faced with dealing with the uncertainties relating to the ongoing Brexit discussions and the approaching deadline for leaving the EU, and the demands on the resources of this Council, like every other council, are growing all the time. But there are also positive stories and developments that we in Royal Greenwich intend to build on and fully exploit for the benefit of all our residents and businesses. We are seeing increasing interest in businesses wanting to locate and develop in the borough. Undoubtedly, one of the reasons for this growing awareness of our potential is the imminent arrival of two Elizabeth Line stations connecting the borough to central London in minutes; one in Woolwich and one in Abbey Wood. Another key source of that interest is the ambitious, long term developments planned or already underway in many parts of the Royal Borough. This Council, under my predecessor Denise Hyland, has been the major driving force in those developments, working in partnership with some of the UK's leading contractors and developers in creating new communities; thousands of new homes, including social housing; new leisure and community facilities and major developments that are attracting new firms, bolster
I
and support our existing traders and businesses and provide employment and training opportunities for local residents. That process is not going to stop under my leadership. As far as businesses are concerned, we remain open for business. One change I have introduced, on my first day, is the creation of a Housing Delivery Board, which will be led by me as the Leader. The aim of the Board is to identify the resources the Council has so we can start building council housing again in Greenwich. If you come to our borough to build or do business, we are welcoming. We will work with you. But we expect you to contribute. We seek to actively engage with all our partners in the borough, from the smallest local contractor to the major development firms, to examine what they can do to support the aspirations of our people. Whether its jobs or apprenticeships, offering contract opportunities, supporting education programmes or mentoring, we ask them all to think about how they can help to make sure Greenwich a great place to live and do business. In return we are doing what we can to ensure that there is
a trained, capable work force available for your business on your doorstep in Greenwich. We have heavily invested in partnership working with leading colleges and education providers to provide tailored courses which meet the employment needs of the industries they are involved in. Our universities and education partners actively engage with different industries to find out where the skill shortages are and what we need to provide to help fill them, that engagement runs from building material manufacturers to pet industry exponents. I was born and raised in this borough. I have seen many changes for the better in the
recent years. The rundown Ferrier housing estate where I spent the first few years of my life has now been replaced with more decent housing than I grew up in.
My secondary school, Thomas Tallis, completely rebuilt with a roof that doesn't leak every time it rains and windows that don't turn the classrooms into a greenhouse.
And the local park, Sutcliffe, where I used to hang around with my mates, now completely re-landscaped and home to our newest, and most impressive leisure facility.
My role as Leader, and the role of this Council, is to ensure those improvements continue and the borough continues to grow and, just as importantly, that it brings along with it the residents of Royal Greenwich.
New businesses and firms based outside the borough, along with many potential and would be residents, are starting to see clearly what we already here in Royal Greenwich have always known; that it is a great place to live and work.

Council sets out refugees aim Lewisham Council is set to resettle more refugees than anywhere else in London and is seeking business support for the initiative. bout 100 families will benefit from the refugee resettlement programme which helps families find housing, children settle into new schools and adults find work. In 2017 the council started supporting 15 refugee families from Syria and Iraq – around 70 people and received community backing for the scheme, in particular volunteers from Lewisham Citizens (part of Citizens UK), local faith groups and the local Amnesty International branch. Lewisham residents have offered homes for families, local people have donated household items and furniture, ten local restaurants offered refugees free meals, and Lewisham’s voluntary and charity sector have helped families integrate into the local. The council aims to become a Sanctuary Borough and protect the rights of all migrants, asylum seekers and refugees. Lewisham is the 15th most diverse borough in the country and has a proud history of welcoming migrants from the Second World War up to the present day. In May the new mayor of Lewisham, Damien Egan, appointed former refugee Liane Segal as mayoress of Lewisham. Liane fled her home in Vienna with the Kindertransport to escape the Nazis in 1939. Councillor Kevin Bonavia, Cabinet Member for Democracy, Refugees & Accountability, said: “Lewisham is leading the way in providing a safe place for refugees to live their lives free from persecution and fear. We are a borough that’s stronger for welcoming residents from all corners of the globe and the message is clear – refugees are welcome in Lewisham.”
A
Park project secures funding Lewisham’s largest green space, Beckenham Place Park, was awarded £440,000 from Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London. The award is part of the mayor of London’s push to make London the world’s first National Park City. Beckenham Place Park was one of six winning projects to get a share of the £2m funding pot from the mayor’s Greener City Fund. Lewisham council will use the funding to: • plant thousands of new trees • support the restoration of the park’s Georgian lake, which will create a new wildlife habitat and be used for open water swimming. Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham, said: “This is really fantastic news. Since the start of the regeneration work in Beckenham Place Park, we’ve already seen a considerable increase in the number of visitors. “This additional funding will be a significant boost to our plans to conserve and enhance this park, attracting even more people to come and enjoy the natural beauty of the park.’
July 2018
The council’s determination to act comes at a time when there are more refugees around the world than at any other time in history with millions fleeing from conflict and persecution in the Middle East and North Africa.

Tax status uncertainty By Matt Reid, Senior Tax Adviser Corporate & Business Taxes, McBrides Chartered Accountants wo developments relating to employment status have arisen in recent weeks, which will leave some people concerned about their future tax obligations.
T
First, HM Treasury and HMRC opened a joint consultation in May on how the tax rules – more commonly known as IR35 – for off-payroll working (contracting) are being applied. Then the Supreme Court’s decided that a self-employed VAT-registered plumber was entitled to workers' rights having worked for Pimlico Plumbers for six years. Clearly both scenarios leave questions for contractors, the selfemployed and employers. Looking at the IR35 consultation first, its stated aim is to increase compliance with legislation, which was first introduced in 2000 and initially targeted at IT contract workers who were in demand for readying companies against the Y2K bug. Without the ‘fix’, the bug was expected to bring computers
and systems to a grinding halt as soon as digital clocks hit 00.00 on 1 January 2000. Fortunately, widespread chaos was avoided. Unfortunately, the ‘chaos’ arising from IR35 is still with us… The IR35 rules are meant to ensure that someone working like an employee but engaged via an intermediary (e.g. their own company or an umbrella company), pays a similar amount of tax as if they were directly employed. However, since its introduction, the legislation has been difficult to impose, with HMRC losing several test cases in the courts. HMRC estimates that currently only around 10% of people who should be applying the rules do so correctly (in their view). In April 2017, the government reformed the same rules for contract workers in the public sector so that the relevant public sector body must determine the correct status of such workers. HMRC estimates that this reform has already raised an additional £410 million of income tax and NICs.
In its latest consultation document, the government makes clear that its preferred option is to reform the rules in the same way for the private sector but says this is not a done deal – though it may prove hard to resist the lure of generating another significant amount of income tax and NICs. The consultation ‘off-payroll working in the private sector’ is available at https://www.gov.uk/government /consultations/off-payrollworking-in-the-private-sector and closes on 10 August. It seems inevitable that this will be an area of greater focus for HMRC in the future. However, if you believe you would be categorised as an off-payroll worker, you should carefully ‘watch this space’. Meanwhile, we would recommend you review your current working arrangements in conjunction with your accountant or tax adviser to ensure they are IR35 compliant.
The Pimlico Plumbers case will undoubtedly present a legal headache for HR teams and businesses engaging individuals and may also raise queries about how such individuals should be taxed or how they should pay tax. HMRC has a useful employment status indicator tool which can help small businesses, workers providing a service and agencies placing a worker to provide an indicator of a worker’s status for tax purposes. It is available at: https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/ check-employment-status-fortax/setup. The service is anonymous, and you can print the result for your own records. However, it should be only regarded as an indicator and not as a substitute for seeking proper, formal advice from a professional adviser. In both scenarios, doublechecking cannot do any harm and could avoid an unwanted and unexpected tax bill arising in the future.

| Education and Skills
Why we have to tackle social mobility It was a pleasure to be able to attend the breakfast meeting on 20 April and speak about two key political issues – education and social mobility. n a personal level, education and social mobility have characterised my own life. My family understood how vitally important education is to obtain the knowledge and skills required to succeed.
O
Education gives us an understanding of the world around us and changes it into something better. It develops in us a perspective of looking at life and it helps us build opinions, have points of view on things in life, and it is also the engine of social mobility.
I was the first in my family to go to university, and that can also be attributed to the brilliant teachers I was fortunate enough to have throughout my education and also family encouragement. However, great teachers and enthusiasm are not enough if we are to gain the economic and social benefits of social mobility. One of the key reasons Britain has achieved success historically is that people with talent, irrespective of their origins and background have been able to reach out and achieve.
I strongly believe that talent and hard work alone should determine how far people can go in life, whoever you are, and wherever you are from.
Today however, I believe social mobility has stalled and for many where you start in life often determines where you finish. There is a strong link between adults’ income and those of their parents, and
July 2018
individual’s educational attainment is also closely linked to their parents’ education, which significantly affects opportunities later in life.
Training, qualifications and skills are at the top of this Government’s agenda, and since 2010 there are 1.9million more children being taught in good or outstanding schools, which is an achievement to be proud of.
Moving forward, the Government is committed to ensure people have the skills they need to succeed in a global Britain post-Brexit, and is heavily investing in technical education with new T-Levels, which will be taught from 2020, and there are also many more apprenticeships now on offer. Further Education colleges too are offering more and playing an important role. Businesses are also key to improving social mobility, both on local and national levels. That’s why I have been supporting my Parliamentary colleague, the former Education Secretary, Rt Hon Justine Greening MP, with the Social Mobility Pledge and call on businesses to act. The Pledge is made up of three commitments, which interlink with one another:
1. Partnering directly with schools or colleges to provide coaching through quality careers advice, enrichment experience and/or mentoring to people from disadvantaged backgrounds or circumstances.
2. Access - providing structured work experience and/or apprenticeship opportunities for people from disadvantaged backgrounds or circumstances.
3. Recruitment - adopting open employee recruitment practices which promote a level playing field for people from disadvantaged backgrounds or circumstances, such as name blind recruitment and contextual recruitment.
This initiative has the backing of the CBI, the British Chambers of Commerce and the Federation of Small Businesses because they understand that improving social mobility is good for business, as well as good for individuals and communities.
Whilst talent in Britain is spread evenly across our country, regrettably opportunity often isn’t. Every individual should have a fair chance of reaching their full potential, and we must therefore ensure that everyone has the opportunity to
build a good life for themselves regardless of their background.
The Government has a key role to play in this, and I know it is committed to creating a country where everyone has the same opportunities to take them as far as their talents allow.
However, the actions of Government alone will not be enough to tackle the issue of social mobility. We need to see everyone playing their part, including families, schools, businesses, and society, to allow everyone to realise their full potential.
Businesses can play a key role in achieving this, which is why I am delighted to support the Social Mobility Pledge and to be able to highlight the benefits.
Without action, social and economic divisions in the UK will widen, and our country will lose out.
Rt Hon Sir David Evennett is the Member of Parliament for Bexleyheath and Crayford.
“
Every individual should have a fair chance of reaching their full potential, and we must therefore ensure that everyone has the opportunity to build a good life for themselves regardless of their background.

What do I need to consider when I am seeking funding for growth? The first thing to note is that there is plenty of money available for companies that are seeking finance to grow. e are ten years on from the financial crash of 2008, and there is a real appetite to lend among investors. However, the key thing to do before you approach lenders like the banks or ArchOver, is to have a plan. What you shouldn’t be doing is approaching a lender with a half formed idea, and just a notion that you need money. What we are looking for at ArchOver, as a facilitator of lending, is a management team that has thought their idea through rather than rushing to secure funding before they are ready. There is a lot to be said for waiting until the time is right. At ArchOver, we need to see evidence of a business that has gone
W
through that thought process. They may have lived with an idea for twenty years and know everything about it, and believe that it will work, but what you must remember is that we come to it cold and we need to see a business plan that explains the idea clearly. Businesses seeking funding need to show that they have answered a series of questions relating to how they will invest the money. What is their market? What do they want to achieve? How many new customers are they seeking? Have they thought about how they are going to market their business? These are the questions we need to see answered before we will consider facilitating a loan. It may be a good idea to take one of the many business plan
formats available to download online. They take you through the questions and help you provide the answers. One I have used a number of times is the one provided by the Prince’s Trust. At ArchOver, we are keen to facilitate loans to businesses seeking to grow but we only do so when we see the evidence of planning. Companies that borrow over the ArchOver platform are UK-based, have been trading for a minimum of two years, are seeking a minimum loan of £250,000, have an established management team and have assets against which the loan can be secured. What we don’t do is take personal guarantees as we believe that business should be kept separate from one’s personal life.
Loans are for any business purpose, typically raising working capital, replacing invoice discounting, factoring or bank overdrafts. All loans are fixed term, for a fixed amount and at a fixed rate

| Big Interview
Pragmatic approach that allows creativity
When Meghan Markle walked down the aisle to marry Prince Harry earlier this year, she was showcasing the talent of a former student of Ravensbourne, Clare Waight Keller.
Big Interview |
raduating in the early 1990s, Clare Waight Keller studied fashion at Ravensbourne and has now gone on to become Givenchy’s first female creative director. Ms. Markle chose Clare to design her stunning floor length gown for the ceremony, later changing into a lily-white halter dress for the evening reception designed by another of Ravensbourne’s former students – Stella McCartney. The worldrenowned designer undertook a fashion foundation diploma at Ravensbourne, going on to become creative director at Chloe before progressing to launch her own fashion house. For Professor Linda Drew, Ravensbourne’s ViceChancellor, the fact that alumni such as Clare Waight Keller and Stella McCartney can reach such heights in the creative industries, supports the work that the institution does to inspire its students as they prepare to enter the global creative sector. “A big part of our approach is aspirational, to show our students what they can achieve when they enter the world of work” Linda commented. “The fact that Meghan Markle’s wedding dress was designed by one of our alumni helps us do that.” These are exciting times for Ravensbourne, which was recently awarded university status by the Privy Council and from now on will be known by the full title, ‘Ravensbourne University London’. Previously located on Bromley Common and then Chislehurst, Ravensbourne moved to their new purpose-built campus on the Greenwich Peninsula in September 2010. The institution has offered degree level courses for many years, which were validated by the University of the Arts London previously. In August 2017, Ravensbourne gained Taught Degree Awarding Powers and can now award its own degrees. This has enabled them to tailor their courses to ensure they are exactly what industry needs, and what interests students. They offer specialist subjects including graphic design, product design, architecture, film production,
G
games design and fashion promotion. They were also awarded ‘Silver’ in the Government’s Teaching Excellence Framework in 2017. Ravensbourne was commended for its commitment to widening participation and recruiting students from a diverse range of backgrounds. It was also recognised for its practice-based approach to learning and its industry connections, ensuring that students have the chance to work on real-world projects and use industry standard equipment. Speaking on the journey Ravensbourne has been on, Linda said: “The awarding of university status acknowledges Ravensbourne’s academic integrity as a higher education institution with rigorous standards and academic governance. It’s a further endorsement of the quality and breadth of learning that is offered here.” “Being a university gives us a global reputation.”
Underpinning that quality is the university’s Mindsets and Skillsets manifesto, an educational philosophy that underpins everything Ravensbourne does. It’s a very pragmatic approach to education that continues their fantastic record for developing people with the skills that industry needs. It also helps students develop the right mindset for success in the creative industries — 95% of Ravensbourne students go into work within six months of graduating. Asked further about this approach, Linda explained: “We are very targeted in the way we prepare our learners for the world of work. It is not enough that they can produce high quality graphic design or a good film, they must also be able to survive in the workplace. They must be able to collaborate with other people and be able to communicate - the mindset we try and instil in them is about making them more rounded people. As a result, we have a very good employability rate. I think our programme is pretty unique.”
Previously the deputy director and director of academic development at the Glasgow School of Art (GSA), Professor Drew led the development of the academic infrastructure and portfolio in design, architecture, fine art and digital design. She joined the GSA in 2011 from the University of the Arts London (UAL) where she was dean of the graduate school for Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon. Professor Drew took up her position as the director of Ravensbourne in 2015 and became, with the granting of university status, its first vicechancellor. She succeeded Professor Robin Baker, who left following 20 years in the position. The pride that Linda conveys in the achievements of Ravensbourne students is evident. Former students
27
include fashion designer Bruce Oldfield, Kevin Carrigan (Senior Vice President and Creative Director for Ralph Lauren), literary scholar Robert Hewison, handbag designer Emma Hill, sculptor Alison Wilding and co-designer of the 2012 Olympic torch, Jay Osgerby. A young David Bowie even studied at Ravensbourne. Linda noted that the link to Meghan Markle’s wedding was something that the university had used in communicating its offer to students: “Everyone is so proud to see Ravensbourne alumni making history with what are truly stunning fashion designs. It is a real testament to the dedicated, talented fashion teams we have had over the years, and continue to have here at Ravensbourne. We have been able to use what happened to inspire our students and show them the calibre of the graduates we produce.”
“
The awarding of university status acknowledges Ravensbourne’s academic integrity as a higher education institution with rigorous standards and academic governance. It’s a further endorsement of the quality and breadth of learning that is offered here.

Making the right connections Each month the Chamber hosts a variety of events which offer members a superb opportunity to meet and chat to fellow business people. Here, we review a few of our past events.
Executive Lunch 26 April 2018
With generous sponsorship from Chamber member O’Keefe Construction, the Chamber returned to the Bromley Court Hotel in April to host an Executive Lunch. The speaker for this event was Jack Garrett-Jones, Deputy Agent for Greater London, The Bank of England. Jack presented with energy and good humour in his detailing of the conundrums faced by economists in the past decade. Of particular interest was the concept of the current “Fourth Industrial Revolution” brought
about by recent rapid technological advances.
This was a wonderful lunch event, and Jack has agreed to speak at another Executive Lunch next year. Once again, the Chamber extends its thanks to O’Keefe’s for their event sponsorship. The Chamber will return to The Bromley Court Hotel for their annual Summer Barbeque on July 13th.

To counter this, Chamber member South East Enterprise offer a free cyber security business support for businesses based in Royal Greenwich as part of their e-business 2 programme. To help South East Enterprise promote this service, the Chamber arranged for a
presentation lunch at Doubletree by Hilton Greenwich.
The presentation certainly left some food for thought; the Chamber is happy to announce that another cyber security lunch is to be hosted this September.
Networking Lunch – Orpington BID
Chamber Events |
10 May 2018 this Chamber lunch event took place at the BR6 Restaurant – the award-winning studentrun centrepiece of LSEC’s Hospitality, Food and Enterprise Career College in Orpington.
The guest speaker for the occasion was Executive Director of Orpington 1st, Sharon Baldwin. Sharon presented on the success of the Orpington BID; indeed last year the BID was overwhelmingly voted in favour of being renewed for a second term. This success
comes in the face of the unique economic challenges faced by the area. Thanks to the wonderful hospitality of BR6 and the informative presentation this proved to be quite the popular event.
Greenwich Breakfast Meeting
Sharon Baldwin, Executive Director at Orpington 1st / Photo: Joe Coomes
8 June 2018 the Chamber’s latest Greenwich Breakfast meeting took place at the University of Greenwich’s Hamilton House.
The presentation was provided by Len Duvall OBE AM, offering an insight into the current happenings of the London Assembly and the activities of the Mayor. In the current climate of spin and “fake news” it was refreshing to hear an honest view from a political insider. Indeed, Len encourages

Chamber members to lend their voices towards the London Plan.
Testament to Len’s gregariousness and approachability was the fact that attendees were more than eager to approach him well after the event’s listed end. The Chamber looks forward to seeing Len again in the future.
28 June 2018 Once more the Chamber visited the admired Bromley Court Hotel to host a breakfast meeting, with guest speaker Gareth Bacon AM who represents Bexley and Bromley at the London Assembly and leads the Conservatives at the GLA.
Unable to resist a sporting reference in this sporting season, Gareth’s presentation was a game of two halves. The challenges of Brexit
negotiations were juxtaposed with the strength and potential of the British economy. His forthrightness allowed for a reassuring presentation in this
arguably tumultuous time. Indeed this was another Chamber event where food for thought was served alongside breakfast…

Artistic Greenwich offers a real treat Visitors to Greenwich this summer can enjoy all sorts of artistic attractions, from evocative seaside photographs to internationally important paintings. mong the highlights, The National Maritime Museum is staging an exhibition called The Great British Seaside until September 30. From abandoned piers to dazzling arcades, visitors can celebrate the British seaside through the lenses of Britain’s most popular photographers, featuring work by Tony RayJones, David Hurn, Simon Roberts and Martin Parr. The exhibition features more than 100 photographs. All four photographers share a love of the seaside which reveals itself in playful and often profound representations of the British by the sea while still bringing their own distinctive take on the seaside experience. Ray-Jones gives us a social anthropologist’s view, Hurn’s is a nostalgic love letter to the beach, Parr provides an oftensatirical examination of class and cliché while Roberts explores our collective relationship with, and impact on, the coast. The Great British Seaside includes images from the archival collections of each of the photographers, new films and new work by Martin Parr In another artistic highlight, and following a major conservation project, the iconic Armada Portrait of Elizabeth I is on public display at Royal
A
Museums Greenwich The Queen’s House. Recently saved for the nation, the Armada portrait of Elizabeth I commemorates the most famous conflict of her reign – the failed invasion of England by the Spanish Armada in summer 1588. Conservators have undertaken essential work to preserve the portrait's fragile painted surfaces which are more than 400 years old. The painting is on permanent public display as part of the national collection in the Queen's Presence Chamber in the Queen’s House, on the site of the original Greenwich Palace, which was the birthplace of Elizabeth I. The Armada Portrait is seen as an outstanding historical document, summarising the hopes and aspirations of the state as an imperial power, at a watershed moment in history. Scholars have described it as a definitive representation of the English Renaissance, encapsulating the creativity, ideals and ambitions of the Elizabethan ‘Golden Age’. This spectacular image has inspired countless portrayals of Elizabeth I in film, theatre and television, and has been instrumental in making her one of the most recognizable historical figures today.
The Armada Portrait was designed to be a spectacle of female power and majesty, carefully calculated to inspire awe and wonder. Like many Tudor portraits, it is packed with meaning and metaphor. Elizabeth’s upright posture, open arms and clear gaze speak of vitality and strength. She is draped in pearls – symbols of chastity and the Moon. Numerous suns are embroidered in gold on her skirt and sleeves, to signify power and enlightenment. She rests her hand on a globe, with her fingers over the New World, and above can be seen a covered imperial crown: both signal her potency as a ruler, not just of England but also as a monarch with overseas ambitions. Other works on display include, Lowry's View of Deptford Power Station from Greenwich. Painted by muchloved English artist L.S. Lowry in 1959, Deptford Power Station is shown with its chimneys belching black smoke into a pale sky. Canaletto’s view of Greenwich Hospital and the Queen’s House is another attraction. The work of the renowned 18th-century Italian artist, this beautiful painting may have been commissioned by British Consul Joseph Smith for his residence on the Venice Grand Canal,
where he entertained many English Grand Tourists. The Parting Cheer by Henry Nelson O'Neil is also popular. Partly in shadow, a group of emigrants look out from the deck of a vessel, some waving handkerchiefs, but otherwise passive participants. An increasing stretch of water to the right emphasises their separation from their distraught loved ones on the quay. Visitors also enjoy Working Boats from around the British Coast, by Alan Sorrell. The quirky and imaginative mural of five panels was originally made for the decoration of the Nelson Bar aboard HMS Campania. Quality artwork is also on display at Ranger’s House, an elegant Georgian villa in Greenwich Park which houses The Wernher Collection, a remarkable collection of works of art amassed by diamond magnate Sir Julius Wernher (1850-1912). Arranged within the panelled interiors of this graceful mansion is a glittering spectacle of nearly 700 works of art – a sumptuous arrangement of silver and jewels, paintings and porcelain.

One of hidden jewels in south London, stunning Kemnal Park With the passing of time London is losing more and more of its green spaces to meet the demand of housing it’s ever growing population. However, at some point in the future this growing population will be in need of alternative funeral options, as well as burial and memorial spaces. emnal Park is a stunning new development rapidly catching the imagination of South-London’s ever-growing population. It has been designed so gracefully and as it continues to expand, it offers a very unique community facility. Set in beautiful ancient grounds in excess of 55-acres. Their 180seater chapel is warm and modern, allowing an abundance of light to grace the ambience of its natural surroundings. With its hi-tech broadcast and media facilities our park is able to offer varied options to those attending and those unable to attend.

Demand on facilities in the area continue to increase, so planning ahead is essential. The London boroughs of Bexley, Greenwich, Lewisham, and Bromley are no different than the other local authorities. To meet the demand of the present time, the choice of buying a grave or a memorial ahead in time within these boroughs is limited. However private cemeteries and memorial gardens are a breath of fresh air. At Kemnal Park, not only you can purchase a grave or cremated remains memorial when you are at need; you can pre-purchase your choice of burial plot or memorial options by planning ahead.
These burial and memorial options can be pre purchased for a range of lease periods. Some options like Private Gardens, Gated Gardens, Mausoleums, Cremated Remains Gardens etc. are available to purchase with a lease for the ‘life of the park’. These burial options are not only a solution for your future, but the future of your generations to come. Kemnal Park has a number of family options. Pre-planning your ultimate resting place is not only a wise way to manage your assets, it also protects your family from the burden of heavy funeral bills at

Ebbsfleet Crossrail plan part of ambitious vision The Thames Estuary 2050 Growth Commission has published a report which sets out an ambitious vision for north Kent, south Essex and east London up to 2050, including extending Crossrail 1 to Ebbsfleet. •
he Commission’s analysis shows that the Thames Estuary could generate an additional £190 billion of Gross Value Added (GVA) and 1.3 million new jobs by 2050. It estimates that at least one million new homes will be needed to support the growth and identifies fifteen priority projects to deliver the vision, including:
T
expediting the delivery of the Medical Campus at Ebbsfleet • extending Crossrail 1 from Abbey Wood to Ebbsfleet • establishing a Great Thames Park to celebrate and maximise the value of the area’s natural assets • developing statutory Joint Spatial Plans in Kent and Essex, and empowering ambitious local authorities to deliver housing James Brokenshire MP, Secretary of State for Communities, said: “The Thames Estuary has enormous untapped potential and we are determined to unlock this to drive both local and national economic growth. The Commission has provided us with bold and ambitious set of recommendations, which we will consider in detail and respond to in due course.” Sir John Armitt, Chair of the Thames Estuary 2050 Growth Commission, said: “Without concerted action, there is a risk
that the Thames Estuary will fail to achieve its potential, at huge opportunity cost to local communities and the national economy. The resounding message from the consultation that the Commission has undertaken is that there is ambition in the Thames Estuary to deliver high-quality development and the best economic outcomes for people.” Professor Sadie Morgan, Deputy Chair of the Thames Estuary 2050 Growth Commission, said: “I think we have created an inspiring but deliverable vision for the Thames Estuary. It reflects the interconnected, but distinct places that make up the Estuary, and is rooted in the ideas and priorities of its communities and leaders.” The Government will now consider options for working with local partners to achieve long-term, sustainable growth in the Thames Estuary.

Planning system not fit for purpose, says former housing minister new review of the planning system by former housing minister Nick Raynsford has called on the government to scrap existing planning legislation saying that it has been ‘built on the back of assertion rather than evidence’ and is leading to very poor outcomes for people. The Raynsford Review of Planning, which presented its interim findings at the House of Lords on 15 May, makes nine provisional recommendations for reforms to the planning system including giving the public a greater voice the planning process. The report claims that persistent changes to planning legislation have left the system powerless to defend the public interest, saying that it is now less effective than at any other time in the last threequarters of a century. Other recommendations include establishing a statutory definition of planning which would regulate development based on its potential for achieving ‘social, economic and cultural wellbeing’ and setting a legal obligation for the government to plan for the needs of future generations. The review, launched in partnership with the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA), is being led by a crosssection of built environment professionals and has engaged with over 1000 people over the past 12 months, including many members of the public. Rt Hon Nick Raynsford says: ‘The planning system is no longer capable of shaping the places we need to secure people’s long-term health and wellbeing. We need a new approach with people at the heart of decisions and system which meet the growing challenges of housing affordability climate change and economic transformation.’

Survey points to resilience in the construction sector Recent surveys have offered some encouragement to the construction sector with London and the South East playing its part. ccording to the results of the Q1 2018 RICS Construction and Infrastructure Market Survey, workloads remained resilient despite bad weather and a weaker short-term economic outlook in the first quarter of 2018. The report, seen as a barometer for the construction industry, said that in Q1 2018, 23% more chartered surveyors reported that their workloads had risen as opposed to fallen. While 63% of respondents noted bad weather conditions as a limiting factor, it was not enough to slow the pace of growth. The RICS quarterly series has now indicated moderate but steady growth for the past four quarters, something supported by the positive expectations expressed by surveyors in their forecasts a year ago. In the early part of 2018, workloads increased across all subsectors, with both new work and repair and maintenance activity rising steadily. Private housing reported the strongest rise in workloads with 36% more respondents citing an increase - the most positive since the beginning of 2016. This contrasted with the public sector where the pace of workloads slowed. In infrastructure, 21% more contributors reported a rise rather than a fall in activity, and nationally, respondents
A
expect the rail and energy categories to post the most significant increases over the coming 12 months. Workloads are now reported to be increasing across all geographic regions, including in London and the South East, although constraints on funding and the lack of sufficiently skilled workers remains an obstacle for many businesses, particularly with regard to professional services such as quantity surveying. Despite the constraints that firms have been facing recently, surveyors remain relatively upbeat; 46% of respondents expect workloads and employment levels, respectively, to continue to rise over the coming 12 months. Another new survey suggests that there is a growing divide in the commercial property market between the performance of retail property and the industrial sector. According to the Q1 2018 RICS UK Commercial Property Market Survey, tenant demand is declining in the retail sector whereas industrial demand is still solid and there has been a marginal improvement in the office sector. While overall occupier demand was unchanged in Q1, the sector breakdown shows demand for industrial space still rising, with 31% of respondents noting an increase.
This contrasts sharply with retail, in which demand not only declined further but at an accelerating rate; 43% of respondents saw a fall in demand for retail property, which is the weakest reading since 2009. In the investment market, enquiries rose for a seventh successive report, with demand increasing strongly for industrial assets, marginally for offices, but falling in the retail segment. Simon Rubinsohn, RICS Chief Economist, said: “It has been hard to escape the grim news from the high street in recent months with a whole host of well-known names either closing down or looking to scale back their footprint. The results from our latest survey of chartered surveyors suggests that this challenging environment is unlikely to let up anytime soon.” The year ahead picture does look more positive, however, with 17% of estate agents who contributed to the survey anticipating an increase in sales over the next year at the national level.
Bridging the skills gap
Construction businesses are being urged to embrace other sectors to bridge the skills gap. New research from construction skills organisation the CITB suggests that attracting people from other sectors should play a bigger part in meeting construction’s skills needs.
The report, ‘Construction and Built Environment: Skills Transferability in the UK’, found there will an even bigger need “to boost skills transferability as recruitment becomes more difficult post Brexit.” Researchers found that 62% of employers took no action to encourage employees to transfer between trades. This is despite approximately one in five (19%) of construction sector workers having previously worked in another sector. The research, which saw nearly 500 employers surveyed across the UK, highlighted manual occupations such as steel erectors and bricklayers as the roles with the best potential to transfer skills. A number of challenges were found in boosting skills transferability, including: • Improving the image of the industry • Changing the way training is delivered to it promotes multi-skilling • Concerns from employees and unions around multi-skilling Steve Radley, CITB Policy Director, said: “Our research shows that transferability of skills is a growing issue, particularly with Brexit looming. “While many employers are not yet looking at it, it could become a significant way to meet our skills needs in the coming years.”
“
It has been hard to escape the grim news from the high street in recent months with a whole host of well-known names either closing down or looking to scale back their footprint. The results from our latest survey of chartered surveyors suggests that this challenging environment is unlikely to let up anytime soon.

If you change nothing, nothing will change As a medium sized contractor operating in the South East, we acknowledged that the gender diversity argument had received more rhetoric than action. Then again, what could we do to make the change happen? s a medium sized construction firm with over 250 employees dotted around the South East, we attribute our 50 plus years of success, to an exceptional working relationship with our employees. Yet women represent a mere 13.24% of the business with 0% represented on site. We understand these figures are unacceptable, so this year we have feverishly taken on the challenge to make a real difference, within our company and the South East as a whole. Using the skills of our HR, Training and Marketing departments, the Walker Women in Construction Forum was founded in January 2018. The forum holds a mission to promote the role of women in the construction sector across all levels and disciplines. We hold a pragmatic approach to making significant changes over the next 5 years. It is evident that there is a disproportionately small number of women looking for a career in

construction, specifically within the South East. Therefore actively searching for candidates who range in diversity, is a challenge in itself. Consequently it is critical we look at this issue with broader view, we need to be in it for the long game. Our female role models from the forum have readily given their free time to present in schools and colleges, attend school radio shows and interview support days. From these interactions, if a student is to show interest we provide opportunities of work experience. The students have qualifications ranging from GCSEs to degrees, and come from a diverse range of social and educational backgrounds. Highlighting the sheer magnitude of roles and opportunities available within the sector. One work experience student in particular, went on to be offered a part time job with us and continues to be a big part of our team. Her passion for the industry is continuously growing. So much so, she designed a survey to be sent out to 3 local schools, with an invitation to young girls aged 11-18. When 85% of respondents stated they would not consider a career in construction, we realised we had a lot of work to do! The highest reason for not pursuing the career was noted “not interesting enough” and “it’s boring”. Followed by 59% of students believing there were barriers for women entering the industry – emphasising “people think men are stronger than women” and
“we don’t get taught enough about the industry”. Our team of female role models are now set to meet with these schools within the next year, to try and break down these misconceptions. We have found our entire workforce population are really getting behind the movement. From muddy boots, up to board level, highlighting their interest and offering insight. With the topic being our most re-tweeted content of all time, the pertinent subject is resonating with our supply chain and clients alike. We have many exciting ventures planned for the next 5 years. From a new range of training courses geared toward inclusivity and equality, to inviting members of our supply chain along to forum meetings.
Along with continuing our work in schools, providing real life experiences and unique opportunities to get a behind the scenes, both at our Head Office and on ‘live’ sites.
Here at Walker Construction we highlighted a problem and have stepped up our efforts to attracting, recruiting and retaining talented women into the diverse range of roles available. We might not be the biggest construction firm, but we sure can make a difference within our communities. We are committed to building, and promoting our workplace as a haven for all to realise their full potential, and in which everyone feels valued for what they do.

What is the point of Physiotherapy? Alison Hodges, Physiotherapy Manager at the Spire London East Private Hospital in Redbridge explains why they include physiotherapy in their rehabilitation of patients after orthopaedic surgery, and how it can benefit you. hysiotherapy focuses on the science of movement. It helps maintain, restore and maximise your physical health. Our patients are involved throughout their care through education, empowerment and participation. | Health and Wellbeing ow, the organisation is calling on employers to do more to create healthier workplaces. The survey, conducted as part of the recently-held BNF Healthy Eating Week, questioned almost 500 adults across the UK, and revealed a number of different factors that affect people’s food choices when at work or university. The findings showed that high workload makes it difficult for a third of adults to eat well, along with finding it difficult to take a proper lunch break. While at work, a quarter say they do not have enough time to prepare healthy foods and 24 percent of respondents say there are limited healthy food and drink options available at work or close by; 28 per cent say there are too many unhealthy snacks available in their work setting. Despite these barriers, two thirds (68 percent) of survey respondents reported that they are motivated to eat healthily to control their weight and, when shopping for food, 61 percent of adults say they always or often check nutrition labels on food. Two thirds or more of people surveyed say that the sugar (68 percent), calories (64 percent), and fat (60 percent) are the values they look for on nutrition labels. Roy Ballam, BNF’s Managing Director and Head of Education, said: “We know that a key to reducing obesity is changing behaviour. Some of this will come from government and local environments making it easier for people to change. “The results from this survey show that the main motivation for being healthy is weight control. “However, there seem to be a number of barriers within workplaces and universities that make this difficult. “Encouraging work settings to engage more with health may be an effective way of helping people put their good intentions into action and we’ve seen an excellent response to BNF Healthy Eating Week from workplaces and universities this year, with more than 1,400 organisations participating.” The BNF Healthy Eating Week survey explored other barriers to a healthy lifestyle and found that almost half (43 per cent) of adults surveyed
N Workplace stress and busy schedules are ‘biggest barriers to a healthy lifestyle’ New research from the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) reveals that 48 per cent of adults say that busy lives and stress play a large role in stopping them from eating healthily, with 40 per cent admitting that being too tired after work is their main reason for not being active.
July 2018
admit that they find it difficult to find reliable information on healthy diets, with changing information, messages and advice from media and experts being the biggest causes for confusion (76 per cent and 61 per cent respectively). The survey reveals that social media platforms (37 per cent) are the most common reported source for nutritional information for adults. Under a third (30 per cent) of respondents say that they use the NHS website, a quarter visit other health websites and 14 per cent say that they gather nutritional information from a doctor, hospital or health clinic. Roy Ballam said: “With two thirds of adults overweight or obese, the UK is in the middle of an obesity crisis – and a lack of consumer knowledge and reliable information on healthy eating is a huge cause for concern. In the digital age, with growing concerns about the trustworthiness of information in the media, many are confused about which online sources are reliable – unsurprising when there is so much conflicting advice available. The public need to receive more consistent messaging about diet and nutrition if we are to stand a fighting chance of changing these worrying health statistics. “It is really encouraging to see that people are motivated to eat well and to check the nutritional content of the foods they buy, however there are clearly many who are struggling to put this into action because they are too busy, stressed or tired. We need to find evidencebased, practical ways to make it easier to be healthy that fit in with people’s daily lives. Held recently for the sixth year, BNF Healthy Eating Week was established to increase knowledge about healthy eating and wellbeing, physical activity, food provenance and cooking. During the week, workplaces, universities and schools are set a series of challenges to complete and these are supported by activities and informative resources.

Saunter, Swim, Sprawl, and Snack A Day at The Spa at InterContinental London – The O2 By Susan Isaacs Arts and Culture Correspondent e snacked on nuts, sipped herb teas, and were stroked by water cannons, and soothed by masseuses. We sauntered around in the sauna and steam room, and relaxed on loungers. And then we were treated to generous servings of a vast selection of sandwiches and delicious wraps, with a spectacular view of the river Thames in the elegant Meridian restaurant. What a day for three women, Helen McIntosh, South East London Chamber president, Karen Hall, Benham Publishing sales director, and Susan Isaacs language teacher and journalist. And the unanimous conclusion from all three of us at the end of a lovely day was that we left feeling chilled and totally refreshed.
W
The welcome was warm. Attentive staff appeared bearing towels, and the oriental design of the hotel, with its brown wood and oriental jars transported us instantly to a world of meditation, tranquillity and calm. All three of us admitted privately that we felt a bit twitchy locking up our phones in the spacious changing rooms. But what a good thing we did. Three hours away from screens and bleeps was a gift in itself. But we all felt a little nervous as we donned luxury white robes, swimsuits and flip flops and wandered through the door to enter the inner sanctuary of the spa. The swimming pool was a magnificent blue, and carefully designed to be the same depth throughout, a bonus for those wanting to stay in their depth. But equally the size of the pool (17m) made it a gift for those wanting to get a decent length in. The three of us congregated in the mini pool at the end where at the touch of a button, streams of water massaged any bit of us that needed a bit of tender loving care. The conversation flowed and we found ourselves exchanging comments with a swimming instructor and her daughter out on a birthday jaunt.
Each time Helen, or Karen ventured into the steam room or the sauna, they engaged in conversations with others who too were enjoying the wonderful spa facilities. They would each emerge in turn, their cheeks flushed an attractive pink. I could not quite work out whether pink was the effect of the steam, or their conversations but the effect was more attractive than any cosmetic I have ever seen. My treatment was a pedicure, and I was impressed by the high tech chair that swivelled and spun, raised and lowered. Any dentist would have envied the tricks that chair could perform, but I can assure you it was a far pleasanter experience than a visit to the dentist. My feet were massaged with oils, the soles scrubbed smooth, and immersed them in a bowl of a gorgeous hot soapy water. The beautician then gently painted the nails a vivid pink, that almost matched
the pink on Karen and Helen’s faces. With eight treatment rooms including couples' treatment suites, there is plenty of opportunity to unwind with a holistic collection of bespoke treatments to suit all personal needs. It’s an experience not to be missed. Don’t delay, leave your mobile phone, and your blusher behind and escape the hustle and bustle of the day and indulge yourself. The Person behind the Business |
The Drury Tea & Coffee Company Three years ago, one of London’s oldest coffee roasters and tea blenders moved onto the Royal Arsenal development in Woolwich. Commercial Director, Marco Olmi, tells us a little of the history of the Company, and explains how the business has evolved since those early years. y grandfather started the business in 1936, together with his two brothers. Although born in the UK of Italian parentage, they lived much of their childhood in northern Italy and came back here in the 1920s. They started by blending tea by hand with wooden shovels from first floor premises in Great Windmill Street. The Company soon moved to Drury Lane and it was here, in 1946, that Olmi Brothers Tea became the Drury Tea and Coffee Company. It was around this time, too, that they started roasting coffee and the Company was in the vanguard of the ‘frothy coffee’ revolution of the early 50s, supplying the Italian coffee bars of Soho. Since then we have moved premises several times, but always remaining in London. Our factory and offices are now on the prestigious Royal Arsenal estate in Woolwich, where we already feel very much at home. The move was an important one for the Company as it coincided with a major expansion
M
programme. We invested in a brand new Brambati coffee roaster, which effectively quadrupled our capacity to 2,000 tonnes per annum. At the same time, we upgraded our tea production facility with a second pyramid teabag tagging line and other packaging equipment. Today, I am glad to say, the Drury business continues to flourish, respecting the traditional values of quality and customer care which distinguished the first generation of Olmis. Tradition, however, has never stood in the way of progress nor dulled the Company’s quest for growth as it continues to develop new products, launch new initiatives and forge new markets. Not surprising then, that today’s product portfolio looks very different from those early years, although it may surprise you to learn that the original espresso coffee that took London’s coffee shops by storm in the early 50’s, Reale, is still on our price list. These days, however, it has been joined by a further 14 different blends of espresso beans. Such a choice! Our best seller now is Caffè Cuidado, which is blended from 100% Arabica coffees and sourced exclusively from Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farms. We also sell a wide range of other coffees with over 40 different blends and originals our new Gunnery Blend is a personal favourite of mine.
Since those early years, teabags have largely stolen the show from leaf teas. But we have an extensive range of fine leaf teas which includes black, green and white teas, semi-fermented teas, tisanes, fruit infusions and flavoured teas. Within a few short years of their launch, Drury pyramid teabags have grown to become our best-selling tea line, the reason being that the pyramid shape of the teabag allows better infusion and permits us to use a broader selection of tea types. It’s not surprising they are so popular. For our foodservice customers, we offer a full range of equipment and technical service back up. Coffee brewing calls for specialist equipment, which is why we are the leading UK distributor of Rancilio equipment. Manufacturing in the heart of espresso country, Milan, this company is world renowned for the quality and reliability of its equipment and they have been our equipment partner for over 25 years. Espresso equipment, in particular, is quite sophisticated these days and a more knowledgeable public expects a high standard and consistency from their latte or cappuccino.
That is why we place an ever greater emphasis on staff training. We have a dedicated team of barista trainers and all our regular customers will receive initial and refresher training on the care and use of their equipment and the art of making coffee. Although based in the capital, we are a national business, operating via a network of sales and service agents throughout the length and breadth of the country. The majority of our output is destined for the out-of-home market, where we proudly serve some very wellknown and highly accredited restaurants and hotels. We count a large number of Michelin-starred establishments amongst our clientele. Our products are also available for the ‘at home’ market and if ever you are in Covent Garden, do please pop into our retail shop in New Row, where you will be made very welcome. Alternatively, it is so simple to buy your tea and coffee online either using our mail order service or our new ‘Click and Collect’ facility from either Covent Garden or the Royal Arsenal.”

Difficult question because there is so much I would want to do. But first on the list would be trying to sort out the NHS.
