Welcome to the January Edition of the Business Connexions magazine!

As we step into a new year, 2025 offers a fresh chapter for businesses in Wandsworth and beyond. While the challenges of the past year have tested our resilience, they have also highlighted the incredible creativity and determination of our local business community. At Wandsworth Chamber, we are optimistic about the opportunities this year will bring and remain committed to supporting your growth and success.

A Year of Opportunities and Adaptation

Looking ahead, 2025 is poised to be a year of both change and possibility. Economic conditions are gradually stabilising, and technological advancements such as AI and automation continue to transform industries, opening new doors for innovation and efficiency. Sustainability will remain at the forefront of business priorities,

not just as a necessity but as a driver of growth and customer trust.

At the same time, businesses will need to navigate key challenges, from rising costs, such as adjustments to National Insurance in April, to ongoing shifts in consumer behaviour and market demands. These hurdles, while daunting, also present opportunities for those ready to adapt, invest in productivity, and embrace innovation.

Connecting and Thriving Together

As always, collaboration and community will play a crucial role in thriving during times of change. Our events calendar this year is packed with opportunities to connect, share knowledge, and grow alongside like-minded professionals. Whether you’re looking to expand your network, discover new strategies, or simply find inspiration, there’s something for everyone. With the right mindset and tools, 2025 can be a year of growth, innovation, and success. Let’s face it together, ready to seize the opportunities ahead. Here’s to a prosperous and impactful year for all!

Best wishes.

What are the trends predicted for 2025?

As a New Year draws in, Sarah Dale takes a look at the trends ahead in 2025 speaking to Wandsworth Chamber members to gain their insights into the year ahead.

There is no denying that the past five years have been a rocky road for businesses. We have lived and worked through an unprecedented pandemic resulting in lockdowns and restrictions, Brexit and its effects on international trade, the cost-of-living crisis, a conveyor belt of Prime Ministers and a new Government. Looking ahead to 2025, are businesses in London, particularly in the Wandsworth borough, anticipating a positive change, cautiously hopeful or feeling despondent about the prospect of achieving further growth? And what are the emerging trends in business?

“Technology and innovation are shaping the business landscape. We have embraced cloud-based accounting, AI-driven analytics and automation to deliver faster and more accurate services. Innovation is at the heart of our approach – helping clients make data-driven decisions and stay ahead in a competitive market.

“Globalisation, digital transformation and the shift towards ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) compliance will be major trends. Businesses will need advisers

who understand these dynamics and can offer integrated solutions. Lanop is already gearing up to meet these future demands.”

Rike Erdbrink, General Manager of Park Hyatt London River Thames

“We look at challenges as opportunities and we have a huge opportunity to establish ourselves in the area. There is so much growth and change here. Battersea has changed so much and our little corner of the district is a great place for people to come to work and go out.

“Our research for trends in 2025 has shown that it is certainly looking a bit flat. In 2024, there was a lot happening in Europe with the Euros and Olympics. We are probably looking at last minute bookings in the city rather than the long-term bookings of 2024.”

Yetty Adepegba, Interim General Manager of Eden Court Care Home

“People are increasingly looking for excellent care for their loved ones within care homes that have premium quality facilities. The luxury care market is becoming very competitive and faces the challenge of rising costs of living but at Eden Court Retirement Village & Care Home we are ready to meet these as we are extremely confident in the product, environment and additional services that we provide. The increase in competition can only be good for the resident as they have more choice as well as reassurance of the best care.”

Ayca Vural-Cutts, Director of Studio AVC

“As we enter 2025, the design world embraces a balance of technology, sustainability, and inclusivity. Regenerative architecture leads the way, redefining sustainability through a reverse ecological damage approach rather than merely minimizing harm. Designers prioritize improving quality of life with greenery, natural light, and ventilation, while AI creates adaptive environments tailored to occupants' needs. Innovations in digital fabrication enable the use of sustainable materials.

“These trends reflect a commitment to crafting functional, beautiful, inclusive, and community-focused spaces, shaping a better future for people and the planet.”

Christopher Williams, Managing Director, Tiggo Care

“For 2025, I think the big trend in our sector will be increased demand for live-in care as the cost for residential care increases following changes to National Insurance contributions.”

Milly Larmer, Head of Partnerships, Walk the Walk

“Walk the Walk is a fantastic charity that’s all about raising money for cancer research and supporting those affected by the disease. Our events are about more than raising money, they’re about connecting people through health, fitness and giving back. The MoonWalk, where participants walk through the night wearing decorated bras, is a highlight of the UK fundraising scene. It’s a fun and empowering way for thousands to come together, celebrate achievements and make a difference for a great cause.

“From selling merchandise to partnering with socially responsible companies, we have lots of strategies up our sleeve! Looking ahead, new ideas like monthly giving programmes or peer-to-peer online campaigns could help us reach even more supporters. We are also working on hosting greener events, offering sustainable merchandise and reducing waste.

“With technology like AI and data analytics, Walk the Walk can connect with supporters in smarter, more meaningful ways. We are also exploring ways to use tech to make events even more exciting and engaging.”

If you're interested in partnering with Walk the Walk for the iconic MoonWalk London or want to enter a team, email: milly@walkthewalk.org or visit www.walkthewalk.org

David Bharier, Head of Research at the British Chambers of Commerce

“Our Quarterly Economic Forecast (QEF) expects the national insurance hike, alongside other growing cost pressures on business, to impact on several economic indicators over the coming months.

“GDP is expected to pick up slightly in 2025, but that’s likely to be down to more Government spending. Our research continues to show that most SMEs are not increasing investment, amidst an array of rising costs and admin burdens.

“The knock-on effect of rising business costs are likely to restrict wage growth in the short term and employment, as firms struggle to pass on costs and boost recruitment. With fears of a tariff war and continued trade barriers with the EU, international trade will be challenging for many firms.

“Our surveys already showed a fall in business confidence before October’s Budget. While the full impact of the Chancellor’s statement is yet to be seen, businesses face tough decisions as bills rise. It’s vital that business rate reform is accelerated and much anticipated strategies on industry, infrastructure and trade deliver at pace in the months to come.”

Moving to a cheaper, greener energy system

A recent poll of small businesses showed that nearly two thirds1 of Britain’s business owners and senior decision makers think it’s important to embrace environmental issues, with many also seeing financial benefits as a result.

From those polled, 45 percent say that the changes they have made have saved them money, with 40 percent believing that becoming more sustainable has attracted more customers, as well as enhancing their reputation within the local community (44 percent).

With running costs remaining a concern for many small business owners, one in three polled2 say they are keeping a closer eye on their energy bills. When it comes to managing energy usage and costs, one small step small business owners can take, is to get a smart meter installed. They are the next generation of gas and electricity meters that are being installed in small businesses and households in Great Britain, replacing traditional meters.

When it comes to running a business, even making small changes and improvements can make a big difference, whether it’s saving money or being good for the planet. Getting a smart meter can help owners to understand exactly how much energy they are using and help them to control energy costs.

A smart meter can also help identify ways to reduce energy consumption – which is good for budgets, as well as the planet.

Whether you own or rent your business premises, you may be eligible for a smart meter, and if you are renting, but pay your own energy bills, you can ask your supplier to install one3

SMART METER BENEFITS

Smart meters have lots of benefits for small businesses, including:

• Accurate billing: smart meters measure energy usage in near real-time, so no more manual readings or estimated bills. This means you only pay for the energy you use, which can help with managing cashflow

• Control: the data provided by smart meters can give you more control over your business’ energy spend, helping you monitor energy usage and identify where cost savings can be made

• Access to historic energy usage data: small businesses with a smart meter can request free access to 12 months of data from their energy supplier.

This could help with budgeting and reduce bill shock. It could also help you plan for your next bill by identifying any trends or patterns in your energy use across the year

As well as helping to give you more control of your business budgeting, smart meters are playing an important role in Great Britain’s energy infrastructure upgrade, as we continue to increase our use of cheaper, greener renewable energy sources.

The data smart meters provide is key to this innovation, and will enable us to buy, store and consume energy differently to the way we do today, gathering the information the energy networks need that will help the energy system better manage supply and demand. This will make the whole system more efficient and able to use more renewables such as wind and solar power.

So just by having a smart meter installed, you’re helping to create a smarter, greener energy system that will benefit Britain, the planet - and you.

Smart meters are currently available, and installations are happening now. To find out if your business is eligible, contact your energy supplier or broker; search “Get a smart meter for business” or visit smartenergyGB.org.

What small business owners are doing to become more sustainable:

1. Turning off equipment when not in use

2. Recycling old IT equipment

3. Creating a recycling policy

4. Keeping a much closer eye on energy bills

5. Replacing lights with LED alternatives

6. Using environmentally friendly products eg for cleaning

7. Reusing plastic carrier bags

8. Going paperless

9. Using local suppliers

10. Using eco-friendly/ biodegradable packaging

Smart meters give you access to free and regular information on your energy use. Your energy supplier may provide this via an online platform, app, smart meter display or other data tools.

Wandsworth wins gold and silver in the London Design Awards

Totterdown Street in Tooting Broadway and Waterman’s Green in Putney have been awarded gold and silver awards respectively in two categories at the London Design Awards 2024.

The London Design Awards is an international competition that recognises exceptional designs and outstanding creative projects worldwide. This year there were over 2,500 submissions from more than 30 countries.

Taking gold was the newly pedestrianised Totterdown Street. Formerly a functional space with parking and delivery points, Wandsworth Council has worked to transform the street into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly community hub that reflects the area’s dynamic multicultural energy and provides benefits to local businesses. The project vision was to create a central public space where people could gather, socialise and enjoy new green infrastructure and active travel options. A key aspect of the project was the collaboration with Tooting Market, helping to extend its lively atmosphere onto the street and encouraging shared use of the space.

Awarded silver was Waterman's Green in Putney, formerly a dark and underused patch of land next to Putney Bridge, but now transformed into a welcoming public space, with a clear focus on accessibility, inclusivity and sustainability. The redesign introduced an accessible ramp, widened the entrance, and created open, sweeping views of the Thames. Central to the transformation was the creation of a rich, natural environment with the introduction of native trees and greenery. This created habitats and helped improve the air quality by screening visitors from the busy Lower Richmond Road.

Councillor Kemi Akinola, Deputy Leader of Wandsworth Council, said: “Our recent achievements highlight our commitment to improving Wandsworth for everyone. Whether it’s upgrading parks, investing in our roads and pavements, or improving active travel options, we are making strides to create a borough that’s greener, more sustainable, and inclusive for all. By focusing on these priorities, we’re delivering a better quality of life for residents and ensuring Wandsworth is prepared for the future.”

Restored iconic bull sculpture unveiled by Roehampton community

A shaggy bronze bull that has stood on the Alton Estate for more than 60 years is showcasing a new look after a dedicated conservation project.

Wandsworth Council worked with charity Heritage of London Trust to complete the restoration of the 10-foot-long bull, which was created by celebrated artist Robert Clatworthy.

The Grade II listed heritage sculpture Bull – which was installed on Roehampton’s Downshire Field in 1961 – has now been restored to its former glory. Schoolchildren from The Alton School and Roehampton Church Forest School joined the Mayor of Wandsworth Sana Jafri to unveil the majestic sculpture.

Resident Stephen Ballard was a schoolboy when the sculpture was first installed, and remembers the public art coming to Downshire Field, off Danebury Avenue.

He said: “I was living across the street when they first installed the sculpture in 1961, after my family moved here in 1958.

“I was about six at the time and I remember the lead up to it, as they told us they were going to build something here. It was either going to be a children’s playground, a paddling pool, or a bull sculpture. I can remember it like it was yesterday, we weren’t too happy at first because we wanted a playground.

“But they made the right decision because it has lasted and it’s a magnificent piece in the area. It’s good to see it restored.”

The restoration by Heritage of London Trust included removal of dirt, spray paint and corrosion, as well as a repatination and rewaxing.

Alton School pupil Jeremiah Evans unveiled the restored sculpture on 26th November, while

children from Roehampton Church Forest School performed poems they had written about the Bull’s life over the past 63 years.

“I’ve seen Bull many times and I really like it, I sometimes come and play down here,” said Jeremiah. “We learned about how it was put down here after World War II. It looks a lot different now, cleaner and nicer.”

The sculpture was originally commissioned as part of a post-war public art project, which also included the installation of Lynn Chadwick’s Grade II listed bronze figures, The Watchers, in Roehampton in 1963.

Councillor Jafri said the restored bronze bull was “a symbol of our community’s strength and heritage”.

“This much-loved sculpture has stood here in Roehampton for over 60 years as a testament to resilience and creativity,” she added.

“As we unveil the restored bull, we’re proud of the local legacy it represents. Our thanks go to the Heritage of London Trust, whose support made this restoration possible, preserving Alton’s cultural history for future generations.”

Wandsworth honoured in Good Parks report

Wandsworth’s parks received special recognition for remarkable improvement in the annual report released by Parks for London.

The borough’s parks reached eighth place this year, soaring 13 spots since the last report.

The theme for Good Parks for London 2024 was ‘Collaborative Solutions’. Wandsworth scored highly in many criteria including public satisfaction, collaboration, supporting nature, and health, fitness and wellbeing.

Judi Gasser, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Wandsworth is very lucky to have so many parks to enjoy. We are delighted to have been recognised for the hard work and commitment to make the most out of every park and I would like to thank every member of staff and volunteer involved.

“The council is committed to maintaining our green spaces. It is especially exciting for our biodiversity work to be honoured as the

report’s case study for supporting nature.”

Wandsworth’s parks featured as a case study example for supporting nature by monitoring biodiversity in Tooting Commons and Wandsworth Common through bat and amphibian surveys, carried out as part of the citizen science programme.

Local resident Matt, who grew up in Balham and now lives near Wandsworth Common, said: “I’ve always loved the parks in Wandsworth. I grew up near Tooting Common, and I love the pond and the ducks in Wandsworth Common. It’s amazing to have always had such a huge open space so close to my home in London, I feel very lucky.”

Good Parks for London aims to improve and celebrate park services across London, encouraging sustainability, accessibility and community wellbeing. Their report comes out every two years to highlight the work that London boroughs do to maintain and develop London’s parks and green spaces.

Small Business Saturday

On Saturday 7th December I was pleased to support Small Business Saturday in collaboration with Marsha De Cordova - MP for Battersea, Jo Rigby - Wandsworth Councillor and High Streets Champion, and Karim Fahei, CEO of London Chamber of Commerce.

It was fantastic to visit some of the local independent businesses along Battersea High Street and hear from the Business Owners who shared their inspiring stories and experiences of running a small business.

Wandsworth has many brilliant small independent businesses across the borough so I’m glad that we could collaborate to support this incredibly important campaign. I’d encourage people to ‘shop local’ and support as much as possible not just on Small Business Saturday but throughout the year.

Battersea is home to hundreds of fantastic independent shops, restaurants and pubs that serve our community. Indeed, small and microbusinesses make up 98.9% of Wandsworth firms.

That’s why it was great to be out and about on Battersea High Street for Small Business Saturday, meeting some of our hard-working business owners and shining a light on the sector.

Small Business Saturday is a grassroots campaign that encourages customers to go out and support all types of small businesses, with billions spent since starting. I am proud to have supported the initiative in Battersea since becoming an MP in 2017.

This year, I was pleased to welcome London Chamber of Commerce CEO, Karim Fahei, along with Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce, and introduce them to some of our brilliant local entrepreneurs.

We first paid a visit to Reyes Coffee & Brunch, who are still new to the High Street, and have already settled in well, offering smoothies, bagels and brunch every morning. Due to the success of their Clapham Old Town shop, Reyes expanded into Battersea – and the future looks bright for them here too.

When we had our hot drinks, we braved the rain and headed over to the wonderful Jack & Beyond cake shop for some homemade mince pies (with the filling made in store!) and spoke to staff about their preparations for the busy Christmas season.

Next, we visited Evelina, the owner of Ellie’s Hair Bar, who shared her inspiring story of becoming a hairdresser despite huge obstacles. She struggled to get a hair apprenticeship at the start of her career and eventually was taken on at the Hair Bar. She went onto flourish –she is now the proud owner of the business and was nominated for a Wandsworth Women’s Enterprise Day Awards last year.

To finish, I stopped off at Raynsford’s Greengrocer, a local gem I’m sure everyone in Battersea is familiar with. I caught up with the owners of this family-run establishment, which has been running for over 100 years. A critical reminder that our oldest businesses are as essential to the community as newcomers.

Small Business Saturday 2024 proved once again that local businesses contribute to making Battersea the best place to live and work. I took pride in showing the Chamber of Commerce the joy and character small firms bring to the area and I was pleased to recommit my support to their commerce for 2025.

Thank

Sustainable and Green Club of the Year 2024

2023/24 saw Roehampton Club make big strides forward on our journey to realise our stated aim of making operations at the Club carbon net zero by 2030.

Our high-level, initial assessment concluded that the main contributor to our carbon footprint was our energy use and so our approach has been mainly focused on reducing that usage.

Projects include:

• Electrification of the kitchen – Removed gas and use induction hobs powered by our solar panels.

• Switched most of golf and grounds vehicles and equipment to electric motors, charging during the day to benefit from solar power.

• Installed solar panels on Clubhouse, Health Club, Studio, Squash Courts, Grounds Building roofs saving £70k a year in electricity costs

• Indoor Pool Cover installed to minimise heat loss when the pool is not in use, thereby saving on energy required to maintain the water temperature overnight.

• Recycle all food waste and glass, recycle all cardboard, paper and plastic and have planted a new, larger herb garden for our Chefs to use all year round. We have provided all Members with sugar-based water bottles (as below) as well as incentivising Members with costs discounts to bring their own re-use hot beverage containers.

• Recycle all grass cuttings and tree branches in the dedicated Compost Recycling Area plus introduced log walls for insect habitats. All organic and waste material from the site is processed and added to our composting area to make us 100% self-sufficient through recycling on site.

• Encourage Members to use our six electric vehicle charging stations and to walk or cycle to the Club

• Installed 5 water stations for foc filtered drinking water to reduce the use of single use plastics on site

Our rethinking of our recycling practices won us the Golf Environment Organisation (GEO) BioDiversity Award for an excellent long-term environmental strategy. This included a new ecology plan for the estate, including the annual planting of tree nurseries on the golf course, replenishing diseased tree stock and designing new ecological habitats for pollinators and careful husbandry of badger sets and fox families in the woodland areas.

All of this helped us to achieve our GEO Certified accreditation and to win the Green and Sustainable Club of the Year 2024 award from the annual Club Mirror awards.

New luxury hotel opens at One Nine Elms development

A new hotel has opened as part of the luxury development at One Nine Elms. Sarah Dale talks to Rike Erdbrink, General Manager of Park Hyatt London River Thames, to find out more about the high-end hotel.

From the eye-catching statement sculpture in the lobby to the stunning views from the presidential suite, Park Hyatt London River Thames offers a luxurious setting for a comfortable stay in London.

The hotel has 203 bedrooms and its facilities include The Nine Elms Kitchen | Terrace, The Nine Elms Bar | Lounge, an authentic Cantonese restaurant named Yú Gé, a fitness centre, pool, spa, meeting rooms and 14,000 square foot event space. A pastry shop, with pastries made by the French pastry chef on site, is due to open in the new year.

Park Hyatt London River Thames opened on 8th October as part of One Nine Elms, the iconic luxury development featuring two towers: the River Park Tower and the Park Hyatt London River Thames Tower.

“Both offer breathtaking views of London and the River Thames,” explains Rike Erdbrink, General Manager.

“We are equally excited about the growth of Nine Elms, the largest regeneration project in the area, and as the first and only luxury hotel in this community, we are thrilled to provide a unique space for guests to experience exceptional hospitality.”

The newest addition expands the Park Hyatt portfolio to 46 hotels around the world and each features an ‘Art at the Park’ exhibition featuring world renowned artists. The beautiful sculpture in the lobby at London River Thames is a specially commissioned piece called Ebb and Flow by Charlie Whinney and uses wood from Whinney’s native Lake District and copper from China, building on the East meets West theme of the art displays.

Rike first joined Hyatt as an apprentice in 2001 at Park Hyatt Hamburg. She has worked at Park Hyatt hotels around the world including Grand Hyatt Hong Kong and Park Hyatt Chicago.

“I’ve been very fortunate to have this kind of career,” she says.

“It is a very exciting time for us to introduce such an amazing product to the London market. This luxury hotel will be a destination for many Londoners and people visiting the city. Our aim in 2025 is to establish ourselves as a primary London destination.

❛❛It is an opportunity for us to showcase what we have to other companies in the community. We have already hosted a breakfast for the Chamber and we are looking to host more events here in the future. This partnership is crucial.

We have our new pastry shop opening in the new year which we are very excited about, and we will be further growing our F&B (food and beverages) offerings.”

Another key aim of Rike and the hotel is to build connections within the Wandsworth business community and they became Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce Patron members in November.

“We feel strongly about working together; it is key,” she says.

“It is an opportunity for us to showcase what we have to other companies in the community. We have already hosted a breakfast for the Chamber and we are looking to host more events here in the future. This partnership is crucial.

“It is also a good way for us to create more awareness. A lot of people have gone past us when it was a building site and not many people know it’s a hotel because it has a very residential look.”

Rike says she never uses the word ‘challenges’, instead preferring the term ‘opportunities’ and is focused on securing the hotel as a popular venue for guests looking for a luxurious stay.

“We look at challenges as opportunities and we have a huge opportunity to establish ourselves in the area,” she says.

“There is so much growth and change here. The Nine Elms and Battersea area has changed so much and our little corner of the district is a great place for people to come to work and go out.

"In 2024, there was a lot happening in Europe with the Euros and Olympics, whereas 2025 is looking less action-packed. We are anticipating more last-minute bookings in the city rather than the long-term bookings of 2024.”

Rike has been with the hotel for a year, building her team and overseeing the project.

“I was the first colleague here in my hard hat, hi-vis and construction boots and walking around with A3 floor plans trying not to get lost,” she adds.

“When you finally stand there at the ribboncutting ceremony and see it complete, it’s an amazing feeling. It’s a feeling you can’t describe.

“I have worked on hotel openings before –in Chicago, Abu Dhabi and Beijing – and it’s something I love. An opening is like a blank piece of paper and you are ready to turn the page. Building a purpose-built hotel from scratch is incredible. I love it!”

SAMBROOK’S BREWERY: Crafting Excellence Since 2008

Founded in the vibrant Battersea district by Duncan Sambrook and David Welsh in 2008, Sambrook’s Brewery began with a simple yet ambitious vision - to revive brewing in London’s heart.

In September 2008 Wandle Ale was born. This modern twist on a traditional best bitter quickly became—and remains—one of the best selling beers at Sambrook's Brewery. Wandle Ale is more than just a drink; it's a testament to their commitment to quality and innovation.

In 2018, Sambrook's embarked on an ambitious project to relocate to the historic Youngs Brewery site in Wandsworth. Following three years of meticulous planning—and a brief pause during the pandemic—their new brewery and taproom opened in July 2021.

Tradition Meets Innovation

London’s brewing landscape has transformed dramatically. From just five breweries in 2008 to over 120 today, the city's brewing community is thriving. Throughout this evolution, Sambrook’s Brewery has remained a steadfast producer of exceptional craft

Their state-of-the-art brewery is more than a production site; it’s a continuation of a brewing legacy dating back to 1533 and situated on the oldest continuous brewing site in the UK, with roots dating back to the reign of Henry VIII.

The heritage brewer and historian at Sambrook's Brewery, John Hatch, can take you for a captivating brewery tour that delves deep into the rich brewing history of London. John will guide you through the fascinating evolution of brewing, from the early days of the Ram Brewery site. Experience the resurgence of beer and explore the modern London craft beer scene, all while admiring the unique collection of brewing artifacts and learning about the colourful characters who have shaped the industry.

"I set up Sambrook’s Brewery in 2008 with a clear vision of being at the heart of our community and we are delighted that Wandsworth, our home, has been named London Borough of Culture."

"Brewing has always been a big part of Wandsworth culture, with our brewery at the Ram Quarter continuing the heritage of having an operating brewery on site since 1533. Our heritage centre bridges our state of the art new brewery with the heritage and history of the site which has seen continuous brewing since the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1st!"

"Of course brewing has changed a lot in that time, but one thing that remains the same is the ability of pubs and beer to bring people together."

Versatile Spaces for Every Occasion

Planning an event? Sambrook's Brewery have got you covered. Their taproom features a private function room able to host up to 50 people, a large mezzanine level for 120, and the entire venue can comfortably accommodate bookings of 400+. All in all they have the best place for any meetings, team building events or training days so pop along to Sambrook’s Brewery Taproom— where great beer, food and good times come together.

Borough of Culture 2025

Sambrook’s Brewery is proud to be within the heart of Wandsworth’s culture and heritage. Founder Duncan Sambrook is keen to support local businesses and be an integral part of this year’s Borough of Culture.

‘People always know when you do something with

love’

Yetty Adepegba, Village Manager of Eden Court Care Home in Battersea, talks to Sarah Dale about the luxury care market and why she loves working with older people.

“I always say to my daughters: ‘When you make my cup of tea with love, I can taste it’ and it’s the same with care,” says Yetty Adepegba.

“If you care for residents with love, they can feel it. We want everyone to feel special and comfortable.

“Eden Court is very beautiful and very different from other care homes. Every time you come in here, you feel special and comfortable. We want residents and their families to feel that emotional connection.”

Yetty is the Village Manager of Eden Court Care Home, which won the prestigious Knight Frank Care Home Design Award in collaboration with Catalyst Interior Design who were commissioned to design and fit the luxury care home. Located in the heart of Battersea, it provides 24-hour residential and dementia care and professional nursing care.

The care home and retirement village are part of the Cinnamon Care Collection group, which is due to open its 23rd care home in early 2025. With 30 years’ experience in the care industry, Yetty is passionate about what she does.

“I love my job,” she says.

“It is a privilege to work with older people. I love talking to older people; they have such a wealth of knowledge and experience and it would be foolish not to tap into that knowledge.”

The care does not stop at the residents – the company prides itself on providing a workplace that staff love to work in with higher rates of pay, meals provided and emotional support.

“We want to set a high standard and you have to pay for that to attract the people you want – well trained, highly skilled people who understand the luxury care market,” she says.

“Cinnamon does this very well. We provide a high level of care to our team too. The job can be stressful so it is important that there is a gym on site, meals are provided, regular breaks and they feel that they are cared for too.

“I may be the Village Manager, but it is a village here.”

That collaborative approach is integral to their role as a Patron member of Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce.

“We joined so we can fully establish ourselves within the South London business community,” says Yetty.

“Networking and increasing our brand awareness are very important to us. Sometimes you can feel like you’re the only one in a particular situation so it is good to talk to other businesses. You learn a lot from other people’s perspectives.

“It is a very competitive market. Gone are the days when you were the only luxury brand and we are also facing a rise in the cost of living, but we have an excellent premium product which

we believe the Chamber can help us spread the word through their members.

“We want to be able to promote the retirement village and care home to the business community. It is also a chance to change any misconceptions of the industry and an opportunity for recruitment. It is not only carers we recruit, but also hospitality, managers, maintenance. We are also always looking for new ideas and ways to collaborate with others to bring new activities to the residents.”

Juggling the demands of residents and staff and the inevitable sad times experienced in the care industry can take their toll, but Yetty’s passion for helping others shines through.

“The smile on the face of someone who has come in so tense and anxious is the most rewarding part of my job,” she adds.

“It’s a big thing handing over your loved one, your most precious person – your mum or dad – and the most rewarding thing is when you can see the trust and smiles. It makes it all worthwhile.

“Being in care is about the resident, their families and the team members. Happy team members make happy residents and happy families. I always say to new residents it is like the first day of school and they will soon make new friends, and they do.

“My job is such a privilege, and I do feel very grateful for the opportunity to work with older people.”

Known for its vibrant and diverse communities, the borough has a proud cultural history as home to Battersea Arts Centre, Battersea Power Station, Tooting Market, the Clapham Grand, the Royal Academy of Dance and much more.

Starting in April, Wandsworth Council, arts and culture communities and local partners across the Borough are gearing up for a spectacular year.

From Roehampton to Battersea, Tooting to Putney, every corner of Wandsworth will come alive in an explosion of creativity. Our cultural programme is being created with local people and organisations, with many events free for everyone. From a mass dance event to a choral spectacular, we will come together to share experiences and supercharge our health and happiness.

We have huge ambitions for our year as London Borough of Culture. Wandsworth is changing, and culture will be at the heart of developing a people-led approach to boosting health, happiness and equality of opportunity.

Our London Borough of Culture programme will be a trailblazer for London becoming a Creative Health Capital City - a place where better health outcomes are achieved through the power of culture and the arts.

We are working collaboratively with arts, culture, business, voluntary and community partners to build an unforgettable programme that will bring out the best in Wandsworth, celebrate our communities and showcase the talent of our borough. By connecting us, our year has the power to supercharge our health and happiness. It will open doors for our residents and help young people find creative careers. It will be a catalyst for change, so that creativity is recognised for improving our health.

The petite design agency working on big projects

Ayca Vural-Cutts, Director of Studio AVC, talks to Sarah Dale about her latest design projects, her passion for architecture and interior design, and why she will always take a hands-on approach.

Asking Ayca Vural-Cutts to choose a favourite design project is like asking a mother to choose her favourite child.

Every single project evokes a proud smile and a twinkle in her eye as she explains why she chose particular materials, how the design was realised and the relationships she builds with clients to ensure their story is told through the design.

Originally from Turkey, Ayca moved to London 20 years ago to take her “dream job” of working at Foster+Partners and later at Zaha Hadid Architects. In 2013, she decided to set up on her own with Studio AVC, based at Merton Abbey Mills. As well as providing design consultancy on large scale projects, she is also a member of Merton Council and Wandsworth Council’s Design Review Panels for Wandsworth and Richmond. She also loves to pass on her expertise and passion for architecture and design by writing monthly articles for international architectural magazines and teaches design at South Thames College.

“I’m really proud of what we do,” says Ayca.

“I’m passionate about architecture and interior design and I love learning and teaching. With architecture and design, it is like you are telling a story. Every building has a story behind it. I believe we bring better designs to clients because of that.”

The studio has a team of three with freelancers brought in on a project basis.

“The beauty about being small, which is our strength, is our relationship with clients,” she says.

“Directors in large businesses don’t tend to get involved with the details of a project; I like to be involved. Small is beautiful!”

Studio AVC’s portfolio is a mix of residential and commercial and one of the latest projects is Frame House, located within an urban conservation area in Wandsworth. So-called because it “acts as a frame to the landscape”, Frame House was specifically designed to maximise on the beautiful views of the rear garden, using large windows and skylights to “bring nature indoors”.

The materials used on the residential property include handmade moulded bricks – Ayca is committed to using specialist craftspeople where possible on projects – and an extensive use of timber.

“Frame House is very contemporary and sustainable and is located in a conservation area,” says Ayca.

“It is an incredible property. It is a very narrow house with a long plot. It was a very dark building, so we used lots of skylights to bring nature into the house and maximise on the beautiful views of the garden.

“We didn’t want to compete with nature, we wanted to respect the surroundings and keep it modest and contemporary. We used a handcrafted brick pattern because we wanted to use a Victorian craft and show it in a contemporary way.”

Studio AVC’s ethos is sustainability and this project is no exception. The wood used for the property is sustainable and the house’s fabric is highly insulated and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) is installed. Solar glazing and rooflights incorporate shading to avoid the risk of overheating and there is also a biodiverse green roof.

The studio has worked on a wide range of projects around the UK and the world, from co-working offices to a children’s theatre, music venues to restaurants. Registered in Wandsworth, the studio moved to Merton six years ago into the same building world-renowned designer William Morris was based in the late 19th century.

“I had been waiting for a space to become available for years and I love that we are based in the same place as William Morris,” she says.

“It is hard to choose my favourite project as I love them all.

❛❛I’m passionate about architecture and interior design and I love learning and teaching. With architecture and design, it is like you are telling a story. Every building has a story behind it. I believe we bring better designs to clients because of that.

“The hardest project was the Birmingham Hippodrome which we worked on to make it more accessible. One of my favourites was creating a bathroom for a teenage wheelchair user. We knew we had got it right when he said he looked forward to brushing his teeth! Buildings need to be good for your wellbeing. The best reaction from a client was a woman who ran a dog boarding service with rescue support, accommodating up to 22 dogs, including 10 permanent rescue dogs. Seeing the dogs much happier because of the redesign was great. The dogs all had their individual spaces, room to play and we made the floors non-slippery.

“What I enjoy most about my job is the variety. Every single project has its own story.”

Ayca rejoined Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce about a year ago, following a break during the pandemic and is looking forward to future collaborations with members.

“I’m very pleased to be a member again,” she adds.

“I go to most of the events and have met a lot of people. We try to use companies local to a project to reduce the carbon footprint and I find that local businesses provide better services because they want to showcase their work and quality.”

‘Knowing that Lanop helps shape success stories keeps me striving for excellence’

Aurangzaib Chawla, Managing Partner of Lanop, talks to Sarah Dale about how his company helps businesses with their exponential growth and why he has set his sights on Dubai.

Digital accountancy firm, Lanop Business & Tax Advisors, has grown exponentially over the past four years.

Established in 2009, the company is based in Putney with offices in Pakistan and Dubai. It has expanded its services to cater to the entire lifecycle of a business – from start-up support and tax planning to financial strategy and international expansion.

To support their clients and offer a one-stop shop, Zaib has also founded A8OM (pronounced Atom), which offers tailored marketing solutions for accountancy and law firms, Dubai Business & Tax Advisors (DBTA) specializes in business setup and tax consultancy in the UAE, offering support with tax compliance, governance, and helping businesses expand between the UAE, UK, EU, and US. Additionally, Eco Outsourcing offers outsourcing solutions for accountancy firms, including bookkeeping, payroll, tax preparation, audit support, and IT support.

“Our growth is a testament to our ability to adapt, our investment in technology, and the trust our clients place in us,” says Aurangzaib, known as Zaib.

“Although exponential growth is a blessing, it comes with its own set of challenges such as managing cash flow, scaling operation and

navigating complex tax implications.

By providing integrated services like accounting, tax advisory, marketing and IT solutions, we eliminate the need for multiple service providers. This holistic approach ensures business have the right support at every stage of their journey.”

When a client needed some support with setting up in Dubai, he asked Zaib for his help and in doing so, he spotted a gap in the market.

“Dubai is a strategic hub for global trade and investment,” he says.

"We noticed a growing trend of UK and EU businesses relocating to Dubai due to its tax efficiency, robust infrastructure, and businessfriendly environment. Through Dubai Business & Tax Advisors (DBTA), we’ve been able to provide on-the-ground support for clients exploring opportunities in the Middle East, from company formations to property investments.

“The opportunities in Dubai are immense –tax-free earnings, high ROI on real estate and a growing consumer market. However, navigating local regulations and establishing a foothold can be daunting. That’s where we step in, offering comprehensive services including company setup and legal support. Our aim is to make the transition seamless and rewarding for our clients.

“Off-plan properties in Dubai offer excellent returns through rental income and appreciation. My advice to investors is to research thoroughly, choose projects by reputable developers and understand the payment plans.”

Lanop’s expansion into Dubai is just one example of how the firm stays ahead of the curve.

Recognizing the advantages of adopting digital solutions and remote working long before the COVID-19 pandemic, Zaib implemented advanced technologies that enabled seamless operations across borders and ensured business continuity during challenging times.

Zaib, originally from Pakistan, came to the UK as a student before settling here and building his business. He has always embraced technology and remote working solutions to stay connected with his teams globally.

"Our London office is fully staffed and operates every day, providing the same high-quality service our clients expect," he says.

"Years before COVID, I invested in real-time collaboration tools, cybersecurity, and robust systems, which allowed us to be COVID-ready when other firms were struggling. Our Pakistan office complements our UK and UAE operations by providing back-office support, enabling us to serve clients seamlessly across borders."

AI was the business highlight of 2024 for Zaib who said the rise of artificial intelligence is a useful tool to streamline efficiency for businesses.

“We have embraced cloud-based accounting, AI-driven analytics and automation to deliver faster and more accurate services,” he says.

“Innovation is at the heart of our approach –helping clients make data-driven decisions and stay ahead in a competitive market.

“One of the biggest challenges faced by businesses looking to scale is the lack of foresight in financial planning and compliance.

“Many businesses underestimate the complexities of scaling, especially across borders. At Lanop, we focus on robust financial forecasting, tax-efficient strategies, and operational streamlining, enabling our clients to scale confidently and sustainably.”

Having made confident strides into the Dubai market, it does not mean that Zaib and Lanop have turned their attention away from the local business market.

“We have 1,000 local clients; they’re our bread and butter,” he explains.

“In Dubai, I would say we have between 30 and 40 clients. I am proud of the connections we have in Wandsworth and with Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce.”

Lanop is a Patron member and joined Wandsworth Chamber in 2016 and started Putney Business Hub with the Chamber in 2019. Putney Business Hub promotes businesses in Putney and the surrounding areas while providing mentorship to start-ups.

“I joined Wandsworth Chamber because I have been a huge advocate for networking since I started my own business,” he adds.

“People can look at networking as an opportunity to get sales and leads, but I go to talk to likeminded service providers. As business owners, we’re all business development officers and have a great synergy. You’re all looking for clients but by getting to know each other, you can refer them and help each other secure new clients.

the Chamber, providing accountancy, financial, and tax consultation for free to its members as our way to give back to the local business community."

Zaib is a regular public speaker and provides mentorship to other accountancy firm owners. He also sits on the boards of various corporates and multi-national start-ups.

With 15 years’ experience of running his own business and broadening his portfolio to include complementary companies, he has the following advice to aspiring entrepreneurs: “Stay curious and adaptable."

“Challenges are opportunities in disguise. Build a strong network and never stop learning. You’re only as strong as the people and knowledge around you.

“It’s not easy juggling multiple geographies, businesses and family life, but I prioritise quality over quantity in both work and family life. Setting clear boundaries and delegating effectively has been crucial. When I’m with my family, I ensure I’m fully present.

“The satisfaction of helping businesses grow and thrive drives me. Knowing that Lanop plays a role in shaping success stories is incredibly fulfilling. It’s what keeps me striving for excellence.”

Wandsworth Healthy Workplaces

A healthy business is a productive business!

In today's fast-paced world, supporting employees with healthy eating and nutrition is more important than ever.

Proper nutrition boosts cognitive function, energy levels, and overall well-being, directly enhancing job performance and reducing absenteeism. This includes supporting breastfeeding, which is a vital aspect of nutrition for new mothers and their babies.

By promoting healthy eating habits and breastfeeding, businesses not only improve productivity but also show they genuinely care about their team's health and happiness.

Five steps your organisation can take to make an impact on your employees' health and productivity.

1. Promote Healthy Eating

Creating a healthy workplace culture starts with raising awareness. Provide resources and support to help employees make nutritious choices, including educational materials, workshops, and access to digital tools that offer guidance on healthy eating habits. By promoting the importance of nutrition and nutrition education, businesses can empower their workforce to make healthier food choices both at work and at home.

2. Provide Healthy Options

Ensure healthy food and snack options are available in all workplace settings. This includes on-site catering, vending machines, and company events. When providing food for events, you can opt for a business that have the Healthier Catering Commitment. (https://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/health-andsocial-care/public-health/your-health/healthylifestyle/healthy-eating/healthier-cateringcommitment-business-list/).

3. Support Breastfeeding

Creating a breastfeeding-friendly environment is essential for supporting nursing mothers. Provide appropriate spaces for breastfeeding and expressing milk, ensuring these areas are comfortable and private.

Additionally, businesses can join the breastfeeding-friendly business scheme (https://www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/getinvolved/bfn-breastfeeding-friendly-scheme/) to further support nursing mothers.

By normalising breastfeeding in the workplace, companies can help reduce the social stigma of breastfeeding and promote a supportive environment for all employees.

4. Promote Regular Breaks

A UK study concluded that healthier choices do not necessarily cost more than less healthy options. For employees working remotely or in a hybrid model, offer staff benefits such as discounts for meal delivery services, healthy snack subscriptions, or vouchers for local healthy food options. By making it easy for all employees to choose healthier options, businesses can support their staff’s well-being regardless of their work location.

Becoming a leader in workplace wellness involves implementing comprehensive healthy eating and breastfeeding plans in consultation with the workforce. Participate in local initiatives and set an example for others to follow. Does your business/organisation have a healthy eating and nutrition plan for its employees?

Encourage employees to take regular breaks away from their work areas to maintain productivity and well-being. Promote the use of kitchen facilities for meal preparation and breaks, fostering a balanced work-life environment. Regular breaks can help reduce stress, improve focus, and enhance overall job satisfaction.

5. Commit to Continuous Improvement

The Importance of Receiving Care and the Benefits of Home Care

As we age or navigate health challenges, receiving the right support can profoundly impact our well-being. Care is more than assistance with daily activities; it’s about enhancing independence, preserving dignity, and promoting a higher quality of life.

Among the many options available, receiving care at home offers a unique blend of comfort, personalised attention, and emotional support.

Comfort and familiarity

Home is where we feel safest, surrounded by our cherished belongings and familiar routines. For many, the thought of leaving this sanctuary can be distressing. Receiving care at home ensures you remain in this comforting environment, reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of security.

A personalised approach

Home care allows for bespoke services that align perfectly with your lifestyle. Whether adhering to medication schedules, assistance with personal care, or help around the house, home care ensures your routine stays uninterrupted. This personalised approach fosters a sense of stability and security.

Maintaining independence and dignity

Independence is a cornerstone of well-being. Home care allows you to retain control over your daily routines,

from what you eat to how you spend your day. This autonomy fosters self-esteem and ensures that your dignity is respected. With professional carers providing just the right level of support, you can continue making choices about your life.

Strengthening emotional well-being

Care at home also nurtures emotional well-being. The bond formed between you and your carer can bring companionship, trust, and emotional support. This is particularly significant in combatting loneliness or isolation, which is common among older adults.

Flexible and cost-effective care solutions

Receiving care at home can often be more cost-effective and flexible than institutional care. Home care eliminates the overhead costs of facilities and allows families to choose the level of support that fits their needs and budget. We provide flexible care options, from occasional visits to live-in support, ensuring that every client receives the right level of assistance.

Starting UP

Q1 In a few words tell us a bit about your business?

Archer Franklin is a bespoke education consultancy based in Battersea, specialising in guiding students through the complex global university admissions processes, particularly in the US and UK. We focus on empowering young people to discover their best-fit academic paths, nurturing their individuality, and preparing them for lifelong success.

Q2 What gives your business ‘the x-factor’?

Our transformative, student-centric approach. At Archer Franklin, we go beyond grades and acceptance letters; we prioritise the whole student. Too often, students are prepared for academic challenges but not for the realities of life beyond the classroom. At Archer Franklin, I wanted to create a system that not only helps students achieve academic success but also equips them for long-term personal and professional growth.

This philosophy led to the creation of the Four Pillars of Successful Individuals curriculum: personal, professional, community, and financial. Each pillar is designed to develop essential skills that students can build upon throughout their lives.

For example, the Financial Pillar teaches students that education is an investment—not just financially, but also in terms of time and energy. I want students to understand the mechanics of loans, compounding interest, and saving, alongside strategies for managing their finances effectively both now and in the future.

Equally important is the Community Pillar. University is a transformative time, and I encourage students to grow where they are planted—whether building relationships at home, at university, or within professional networks. These connections form the foundation of meaningful opportunities and enduring relationships.

Ultimately, Archer Franklin is about shaping happy, healthy, and successful individuals—not just competitive university applicants..

Q3 What motivated you to set up in business?

I wanted to challenge the transactional, impersonal nature of the admissions process. Too often, education systems prioritise statistics over the individual, losing sight of the people they are meant to serve. At Archer Franklin, we shift the focus back to authenticity, individuality, and passion.

Throughout my career, I’ve worked across the global education industry within universities, rankings agencies, EdTech firms, and alongside institutional leadership. Time and again, I noticed students who are both the funders and outcomes of these institutions were rarely part of the conversations which were shaping their futures. I sat in meetings where the focus was on metrics and league tables, and no one asked, “What does this mean for the student?” That stuck with me.

Higher education must be managed as a business, but someone needs to advocate for the individuals navigating it. Archer Franklin fills that gap.

Q4 What do you like most about working as a start-up?

The ability to make a meaningful impact. Being a start-up allows me to live my mission every day: building something from the ground up, collaborating with partners, and supporting families in a way that truly aligns with my values. What I love most is the flexibility to stay nimble, innovative, and deeply personal. We can respond directly to the unique needs of our students and families, ensuring every decision reflects what is best for them.

Q5 What has been your greatest business success to date?

Each student represents success. When a young person realises their worth isn’t tied to rankings or prestige but to where they’ll truly thrive—that’s the real achievement.

One particularly meaningful moment happened recently when a student I guided nearly 10 years ago as a university admissions counsellor reached out to Archer Franklin for support with their medical residency applications. To see them return and seek mentorship as they take this next step in their professional journey was incredibly rewarding.

Q6 What has been your lowest moment?

Navigating the early days when perfectionism met the unpredictability of launching a business. Being a staff meeting of one, every task felt critical, and prioritising what truly mattered was overwhelming at times, when you’re a team of one, the lines between ‘to-do’ and ‘done’ blur quickly. But those moments taught me resilience and the value of leaning on trusted networks and partners.

Q7 In terms of business achievements, where do you want to be within the next 5 years?

Five years can feel like a lifetime (in the best way) when you work with students. I think about the sixth formers we’re currently guiding—where they will be after university, the lives they’ll be building, and the challenges they’ll be navigating. I hope that the support we offer today sets a strong foundation for their future, and that Archer Franklin continues to grow alongside them, evolving to meet their needs as they progress.

Our commitment to quality over quantity will always remain at the heart of what we do. In five years, I hope Archer Franklin will be known not just for guiding students into the right universities, but for equipping them with the tools to achieve success, fulfilment, and impact at every stage of their lives.

Q8 What would be your top tip to someone thinking of starting up their own business?

Focus on your ‘why.’ Starting a business is deeply personal, and challenges will inevitably arise. Your ‘why’ will guide you through tough decisions, keep you grounded, and fuel your resilience. Stay committed to your values, trust your instincts, and never underestimate the power of authentic relationships. Purpose and connection are the foundation of any successful venture. Most importantly, ask for help. You’ll be amazed at the support and guidance that will arrive when you need it most. Starting a business is about being a builder of ideas, relationships, and routines that sustain you. Dream big, but remember success is built one thoughtful, intentional day at a time.

Q1 Three words to describe yourself

Tenacious, courageous, creative

Q2 Ideal customer?

Everyone… There isn’t a single person who wouldn’t benefit from taking a walk. I find it incredibly empowering that over half a million people have Walked the Walk since we took our first steps. I love that every day people discover for themselves the physical and mental benefits which regular walking can have.

Q3 Biggest achievement?

My goodness, there are several…on a personal front, conquering breast cancer, and treatment, and having my daughter must come top. Giving birth to Walk the Walk, creating a multi-million-pound charity from a dream and having the King as our Patron for more than 20 years is a very close second!

Q4 Biggest gripe?

Negativity: anyone telling me I can’t do something, or it’s not possible… it just makes me want to go out and do it… there is always a way!

Q5 Your inspiration?

My Mum, she bought me up to believe that you can do absolutely anything, if you put your mind to it. Of course I didn’t always believe her, but as I get older, and see what my small but amazing team achieve, often against the odds, I realise it is so true!

Q6 Philosophy in Business?

Straight talking, honest and fair – treat others as you would want to be treated.

Q7 Sporting Hero?

I love the Olympics, with such an amazing level of sporting achievement, it’s impossible to have just one hero. But, if I really must choose, it would be Simone Biles, regarded as one of the greatest gymnasts and Olympians.

Q8 Biggest tip for success?

Success is rarely a straightforward path, so always be open to taking the opportunities and risks along the way. Be in touch with your instincts, they won’t let you down, so if it feels right go with it. It may not be what you planned, but it could be even better!
