In the summer of 1840, Fizeau took t wo daguerreot ypes from the window of his room in the Hôtel du Brésil in the Saint-François neighbourhood, photographing a st ationar y three -master in the middle of the basin and including the facade of the Ar senal By using a mirror, Fizeau succeeded in obt aining view s that are not rever sed, and tot ally calm weather allowed him to capture the beautiful reflection effect in the water of the basin despite the long expo sure time needed. On the quay st ands the embarkation tent of the Phénix, a ship used on the Le Havre-London line which was to sink in the Channel on 25 O ctober 1840. On the right , behind the small customs office, we can make out the Quai d’Orléans, the Place de la Mâture and, in the dist ance, the fir st coast al villas
