A better deal for London’s renters London’s shortage of decent and genuinely affordable homes to buy and rent is causing misery to millions. One in four Londoners rent privately, with rents taking up 60 per cent of people's wages.

Many others want and need social rent to live in London affordably. Unite believes Sadiq Khan has the right policies to make a difference to London's renters.

• Set up a London-wide not for profit lettings agency, ending rip-off fees for renters • Promote landlord licencing schemes to drive up standards, and make the case to government for London-wide landlord licencing .• Name and shame rogue landlords and make sure tenants have access to this information online • Work with housing associations to keep their rents down, and help councils to protect tenants unable to afford rent up to market rates under ‘pay-to-stay’ rules, if they go ahead.

Low wages and soaring housing costs (rents have increased by 19 per cent in the last five years) are making life harder for working people to get by.
