Making a Difference Locally

With a rich history of philanthropy in the Lowcountry, our Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation’s vision is to "Make a difference by addressing the basic human needs of the greater Bluffton Community, especially those who are most vulnerable."

Thanks to the Berkeley Hall community’s extraordinary generosity, the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation has raised over $2.5 million for Lowcountry charities since its inception in 2008.

Each year monies raised from Berkeley Hall residents and local business partners at the annual Charity Cup event fund the following year’s grant cycle. Together we are truly able to make a difference in our greater community.

While members found Berkeley Hall to be their safe sanctuary, offering essential services and safe practices within the gates.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION: The Heart of the Community

Honored to be named a Club + Resort Business' 2020 Top Innovation Award winner for our Club communications, when the pandemic hit, we knew creative ideas were necessary to connect with Members. Our special Berkeley Experience “Heart of the Community” magazine and accompanying “BHC Sanctuary Video” showed the very heart of our community, telling the story best in the voices of our members.

e've heard about the small acts of kindness taking place nationwide, and right here at home, member Carol Chillemi has done her part by sewing masks for those in our Berkeley Hall community. "My desire was to help our neighbors and friends," she explained. She assembled a small group of volunteers to assist in this effort and together they have sewn over 450 masks. If anyone would like to request a mask, she is happy to provide one for you, please contact her at carolchillemi@comcast.net. Her wish to help our community is the very definition of the acts of kindness that matter most and reflect the heart of our Berkeley Hall family. hen news of the Coronavirus broke, BHC member Gary Crandall’s first thought was “I’d like to do what I can in this fight.” Crandall did just that in the early 90’s during the Gulf War, pivoting his Ohio-based pool company’s manufac- turing efforts toward producing camouflage covers for M1 tanks and Apache helicopters. “My desire was to help our neighbors and friends”
w w “The American Spirit is Alive and Well” BHC’s Gary Crandall Fills the Need Berkeley Hall is a community that always pulls together, whether in times of need such as these, or in times of celebration such as our upcoming Fourth of July and other annual holidays. There is a special comradery that defines us, connects us and forms the strong basis of who we are as a compassionate, caring community. Here, we share a few of our stories, highlighting members’ efforts to make a difference both on a national level and right here at home. (These excerpts first told in BHC digital news, illustrate the heart of our community.) Members Making A Difference: SUMMER 2020 7 “With masks in dire demand, I put one of my engineers to work, researching on Google how to manufacture them. We made the first prototypes that day.” As they quickly turned from cutting and sewing safety products for the pool industry to creating mask sewing-kits for the medical community, word spread and volunteers came forward. In total, GLI Pool Products donated over 140,000 masks to first responders, healthcare workers and nursing homes. Local businesses, church groups and home volunteers in the Ohio area stepped in to take part. “We provided a safe pickup for the mask kits,” he added. "People drove over an hour to get them, sew them and bring them back to us. The American Fellow member Gary Crandall’s efforts to deliver help where it’s needed most garnered local and national media coverage, including Ohio NBC-affiliate WFMJ-TV. On behalf of Berkeley Hall, our sincerest thanks to our members for your efforts to make a difference. “None of us here, obviously, have been through something like this before, so we really didn't know what to expect or how to react,” begins Keith Patten, BHC Board President, in our newest member video. Featuring seven couples, the video shares the stories of fellow members, with Berkeley Hall serving as everyone's sanctuary during the Coronavirus. The “Berkeley Hall Sanctuary Video” showcases our community in an up-close, personal way, through the voices of our members as they describe their experiences here during these unprecedented times. One aspect we've all embraced is the red heart campaign spearheaded by members Stacey and Alan Steinberg, which shows gratitude and support for first responders, healthcare providers, mail carriers, food workers and others, as well as our own Berkeley Hall staff, for their dedicated and outstanding efforts. “There's been renewed interest in communities like ours for people moving up their retirement plans, and looking for a community that's safe and friendly,” explains David Elliot, Berkeley Hall Membership & Marketing Committee Chair. “We feel this video will resonate with people in metropolitan areas who are considering a new lifestyle choice at a premier private club such as ours.” 4 BERKELEYHALLCLUB.COM The Heart of our Community Red heart displayed at the Steinberg home See more Member Stories on pages 6 and 7... The golf experience at Berkeley Hall is a seamless blend of natural wonder and architectural craftsmanship, with our two Tom Fazio-designed courses, inspired by classic designs of the 1920s, such as Riviera Country Club, Winged Foot and Seminole. With routing that meanders through open coastal landscape framed by seaside grasses, dramatic elevation changes, beautiful water features, and bold strategic bunkering.

To truly enjoy our courses, we dedicated 33-acres to creating one of the finest golf practice facilities - Named a Golf Digest “Top 75 Golf Practice Facility,” and one PGA Tour players have called among the world’s best.

EXCELLENCE IN AMENITIES AND FACILITIES

At our world-class Fitness Center & Spa we offer a balanced approach to innovative sports medicine with fitness evaluations and TPI training, along with wellness, sauna and steam rooms, indoor and outdoor pools, state-of-the-art pickleball and tennis, and relaxing spa treatments.

Pups and their owners can’t get enough of our Dog Park, with plenty of space to play and romp.

At the River Park, our new open-air waterfront Pavilion makes the most of our Lowcountry setting. It’s easy to think here as sunlight glimmers through the trees, along the banks of the Okatie River. Surrounded by walking paths and nature trails below moss-draped live oaks, our community dock is the perfect place to drop in a line for some afternoon fishing, watch dolphins at play or simply enjoy the sun set. This stretch of river affords deepwater dock access to the Atlantic, for a view members treasure.

An Exceptional Place to Call Home

We like to say our Members tell our story best, as they share the “Berkeley Experience” that defines the friendly culture of Berkeley Hall.

Nestled in the heart of the coastal Lowcountry, our distinctive, private golf community is edged on the banks of the pristine Okatie River, a world with a casually inviting and active lifestyle that sets the standard for all private communities.

The beauty of our 980-acre property is truly incomparable. With two world-class Tom Fazio courses and a stunning Jeffersonian-style clubhouse as our backdrop, the real appeal is our welcoming Club lifestyle, a warm, social community where it’s easy to find a golf game, or learn the game as it was intended, with a camaraderie of like-minded players. We have more than our share of non-golfers too, who revel in the natural beauty of Berkeley Hall’s Lowcountry setting.

With two decades of Club tradition, the truest of friendships (both new and old) are what bring us together for seasonal festivals, Block Parties, Home for the Holiday events, Oyster Roasts, our Grand Fourth of July Celebration, and so much more.

At Berkeley Hall, there’s always something to do, and experiences to share. Members and their families enjoy year-round social events and gatherings, from casual happy hours and wine dinners to holiday celebrations and live music under the stars.

Traditions are made here, weddings and anniversaries are celebrated, new families welcomed, and years of family memories are cherished.

Our emphasis on the exceptional is integral to who we are. Here, Berkeley Hall’s intentionally smaller community offers an ease of knowing your neighbors, the staff who feel more like family and the beauty of our surroundings is beyond compare.
