FROM THE CLUBHOUSE building process and ensure there is enough inventory for the increasing number of prospective members we are attracting in record numbers. Furthermore, we will be determining if Membership would like to move forward with Phase 1 of the Master Plan. With all the activity at the Club, the Four-Seasons Veranda will be the hub for socializing and dining after a round of golf while enjoying the beautiful views.

2020 is a year that will go down in history. Day by day our lives were changing, and opinions were many, but answers were far and few between. At Berkeley Hall, we dealt with many different challenges as we adjusted our operations, and modified our dining and events in socially distant ways. Unfortunately, we are not out of the water yet. However, as I reflect on my first year as the General Manager, I choose to remember the many wonderful things that we accomplished in 2020. The Membership was amazingly appreciative and supportive of our ever-changing operations and modified golf rules. Across the globe, golf increased by more than 50 million rounds and Berkeley Hall has benefited greatly. We welcomed approximately 100 new Members into our wonderful community, construction has increased to numbers we have not seen in over a decade, and people are continuing to look at Berkeley Hall as a safe haven during these times. I am convinced that 2021 is going to be the most exciting year in Berkeley Hall’s young history. We are drawing close to finalizing development of 60 additional lots with a developer partner by the end of January. This will help expedite the 2

We have plenty of excitement on the golf side as well. This summer, the South Course will get its first full growing season and we look forward to seeing the perfect fairways. In the Fall, we have 132 women golfers from around the world coming to compete on the North Course for the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship. Also, the Learning Center will be getting a makeover to provide a playing surface compatible to the South Course and a new practice green that is double the size of our current putting surface. For our team, we have one simple goal for 2021, improve the Member Experience every single day. I cannot think of a better time to be a part of Berkeley Hall. As we move towards 500 homes, I would encourage all of you to invite a friend or family member to come see what Berkeley Hall is all about. As a matter of fact, that’s just the story we’d like to share, make sure to read our feature on BHC members Jeff and Julie Grime. Our member-to-member philosophy is just that – sharing our Berkeley Hall story, and having new members come enjoy our welcoming community, wonderful amenities, and the serene lifestyle we enjoy here at Berkeley Hall.

eginning each year celebrating the beauty of our Lowcountry setting has become an annual Berkeley Experience tradition, as Elizabeth Angelone, member/ photographer captures exquisite views of our wildlife and nature. Immersed in the very setting of her subjects, most of her images are shot in her backyard, “early in the morning or late afternoon when the light is soft,” shares Elizabeth. Focusing on the light and what lies beyond adds to the interest and beauty of her work. “That’s what draws me to create an image that goes beyond a study, or a mere portrait,” she explains. With the experience that comes with knowing the Lowcountry’s rhythms, “I love when the fog is lifting off the lagoon, as the sun comes up and the steam rising up is really magical. In February, we get a lot of those kinds of mornings.” The ever-changing hues of nature form her palette, and here in this selection, she looks for changes in the color of the lagoon - sometimes black, sometimes blue and green, sometimes softly golden.

OF THE COVER: “This gorgeous great egret had been feeding at the end of the lagoon and was coming in toward the end of the day as it was getting dark, headed toward the Clubhouse to the trees by the 18th hole where they rest. I just happened to catch him skimming the water.” See more of her images on Instagram at Elizabeth_Angelone_ Photography or at her website ElizabethAngelonePhotography.com JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021

t was back in 2003 when Jeff and Julie Grime first heard about Berkeley Hall Club from one of their fellow club members in Virginia. “I was invited down to play in an invitational golf tournament in the Hilton Head Island area. Held around the time of the Heritage Classic, it was called the Non-Classic and we played on the North Course. It was my first time to Berkeley Hall and the courses and practice facility were exceptional,” said Jeff. “I won the tournament, which made it even easier to say – this is the place for me!” On that visit he purchased a lot and they started coming more often. “It always felt like holiday break, and when it was time to go, we just didn’t want to. Being here was like living in a resort, it still is.” So, they, sold their home in Virginia and moved here full-time in 2008.

Before long, friends from their former Virginia club were joining them here for golf outings, staying in the golf cottages and falling in love with the Lowcountry. Pretty soon, they too became members. “What a great group, and we’re all still here,” laughs Julie. “The Virginia contingent – the Mancusis, Peases, Charlands, Gettings, Davises, (and Bucaros, who are not featured in photo). People are more comfortable making a decision, when you have friends 8

who already have and like the decision they made,” adds Jeff. The pair first met in college, on a blind date. (Or semi-blind, as Julie had already had a peek). They dated every weekend after that,

before setting the wedding date and making it official. With 30 years in the Air Force, their travels took them all over the world, as Jeff’s career brought them to seven foreign countries, and 21 moves altogether. After serving in Vietnam, their first overseas assignment together was in Okinawa, where both sons were born, with later moves to Germany, the Philippines, Canada, Norway, and Hawaii. Jeff also spent some time in Saudi

Arabia, serving after Desert Storm as Commander of a no-fly zone. Today, this former fighter jet pilot who retired as a Major General, is happy to fly his Cirrus 22T, a fun little single engine airplane that’s comfortable to fly in. “Last year we flew up to Colorado Springs for Jeff’s 50th Air Force Academy reunion, making a little two-day trip out of it,” said Julie with a smile. “We’ve led an interesting life and we enjoy our life here,” said the couple. Avid golfers, they’re social at the Club and active in the community. Jeff’s served with the Boys and Girls Club of Bluffton as board president and is currently on the board of the Lowcountry Boys and Girls Club, where he formerly served as board president. “Over the years, you want to be in a community you love and that your family loves visiting. Our sons and their families enjoy spending time with us, and everything the Club offers,” shares Julie. “Once you’re part of Berkeley Hall and you have good friends, it’s really your community. We appreciate the beauty of the surroundings, the service, the friendliness of the staff, and dining and golf are big for us. Berkeley is just the best of all possible worlds – we can’t imagine being anywhere else.”

Jeff points to USAF academy class crest commemorating their 50th reunion. Their motto in Latin means “To be, not to seem.”

“The Splendid and the Vile” by Erik Larson Jan 4 | Ladies Locker Room | 3pm Published in the midst of one of the greatest international crises since World War II, Larson’s new book tells the story of London facing the Blitz through the characters of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, members of his family and his various advisers. “What sets this work apart is his signature way of using painstaking research through personal journals and historical records to spin a gripping nonfiction tale through the ordinary lives of the men and women who succeeded, failed, and perished as a result. Readers are left with an indelible portrait of a nation coming together to face a brutal assault from German bombs under leadership that is wise, empathetic and strategic – not to mention highly witty and charming.” Review: Time “Warlight” by Michael Ondaatje Feb 1 | Ladies Locker Room | 3pm From the internationally acclaimed, best-selling author of The English Patient: a mesmerizing new novel that tells a dramatic story set in the decade after World War II through the lives of a small group of unexpected characters and two teenagers whose lives are indelibly shaped by their unwitting involvement. In a narrative as beguiling and mysterious as memory itself – read the story of fourteenyear-old Nathaniel, and his older sister, Rachel. In 1945, just after World War II, they stay in London when their parents move to Singapore, in the care of a mysterious figure named The Moth. They suspect he might be a criminal and grow both more convinced and less concerned as they come to know his eccentric crew of friends: men and women joined by a shared history of unspecified service during the war, who seem determined to protect and educate Rachel and Nathaniel. BERKELEY HALL GOLF

s we start another year here at Berkeley Hall, we look to celebrate 20 years of the North Course. Time seems to be flying by, as we gear up for 2021 on both the courses, filled with many great events. We eagerly anticipate another USGA event (the first

since 2005) here at Berkeley Hall with the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship coming to play in September. It is a great honor for the Club to host a USGA event and sure to be an exciting time for Berkeley Hall. We start our season with the Berkeley

Cup in late February, followed by the Mixed Member-Member in March, and the Member-Member in April. We hope that support for the Club tournaments continue as we saw in the Fall of 2020. It’s great to see so many members playing in the events and here’s to a great 2021!

TOURNAMENT RESULTS MEMBER-MEMBER

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

CLUB CHALLENGE

The 2020 Member-Member was postponed from its original Spring date, but as November rolled around, we had two fabulous days of weather to play the event. Both the courses were playing excellently in the Fall sunshine, and we had a fabulous turnout with 118 members playing for the trophies and bragging rights. We had some great scores across all the flights throughout the event, but it was the defending champions in both the Men’s and Ladies’ divisions that took home the trophies once again: Men: Pat Annessa & Avery Cleland Ladies: Linda Gettings & Karen Cram

The 2020 Club Championship was played in its usual November spot. All divisions were tightly contested with some great scores throughout. Congratulations to our 2020 Club Champions below: Ladies’ Club Champion: Lanlan Sun Ladies’ Senior Club Champion: Maggie Leef Ladies’ Super-Senior Champion: Lynn McQuay Men’s Club Champion: Will Voetsch Men’s Senior Club Champion: Henry Marini Men’s Super-Senior Champion: Bill Barnett

It was a great three days for the 2020 Club Challenge back at the start of December. That week started out a little frosty, but the temperatures warmed up as did the golf. The team of Ian Harrison, Jeff Morton, William Oberg & Gary Temush (Marshfield CC) had a superb final day to race up the leaderboard and take the trophy!

POLICY REMINDERS FOR 2021: As the weather changes throughout the year, we often see different golf styles brought to life. From sweatshirts in the winter to short shorts in the summer, I just want to remind all of our members about Berkeley Hall’s golf attire policy. 13.5.1.1. Men: Shirts with collars, turtlenecks

or mock collars and sleeves must be worn at all times. Slacks or golf shorts must be worn. Cargo shorts, tank tops, t-shirts, cutoffs, denim pants, denim shorts, sweat pants, bathing suits, or other athletic shorts are not permitted. Hats must be worn with bill facing forward. Shirts must be tucked in at all times.

THE HAIG We were blessed with two days of fabulous weather in mid-December for the HAIG. As usual, the hole locations were devilish and made for some difficult scoring conditions. Despite the tough hole locations, there were some great scores across all the flights. Men: Leddy Vanderpool & Craig Herman Ladies: Denise Frame & Susan Maraghy

13.5.1.2. Women: Dresses, skirts, shorts, slacks, golf shorts and blouses must be worn. Halter tops, t-shirts, bathing suits, sweat pants, cut-offs, denim pants, racer backs, denim shorts, athletic shorts, denim skirts, or short shorts are not permitted.

What you may not know is that Kieran played professionally for 7 years, before starting a new life as a Club Professional, tucking quite a few trophies on his shelf. Over the course of his profession, he has won more than a few titles, and held a few course records. His best finish on one of the bigger tours was 6th place in the Mexican Open. He won the season ending ‘Order of Merit’ title in the South East PGA Section in his last year in England before moving to the USA. And he is the current Hilton Head Island Chapter Professional Champion, having won the title in 2019. With two award-winning Tom Fazio courses, an unparalleled Golf Learning Center and our new Golf Academy, it’s fair to say that Berkeley Hall is all about premier golf. However, ask most members and they’ll tell you it’s the welcoming manner of our golf community and our friendly camaraderie that truly set us apart. That speaks largely to our membership, as well as our dedicated golf team led by Kieran. There’s no doubt that Kieran’s keen wit is equally matched by his dedication to the game. Here, we take a few minutes to learn more about him and his winning approach to the game.

Keep it simple. Golf is all about getting the ball in the fewest strokes, and has nothing to do with how the swing looks. – Kieran Staunton

BHC: Pro golfer you most admire? KS: Greg Norman and Nick Faldo were my inspirations growing up. Both were the top of their games as I started to play in the 90’s. BHC: Advice for those looking to improve their game? KS: Golf does not always come easily, or quickly. Improving takes time. Practice on the range is not always exciting but needs to be done. Nothing beats playing on the course though. Most importantly, don’t bounce around from tip to tip. Stick with what you are working on. BHC:How would you describe your golf philosophy? KS: Keep it simple. Golf is all about getting the ball in the fewest strokes, and has nothing to do with how the swing looks. Allow the flight of the ball to tell you what you need to work on. Play the shots you know you can play. BHC: Your top 3 courses (besides BHC) KS: Hankley Common (England), Leopard Creek (South Africa), Golf de Chantilly (France)…special local mention to Secession.

BHC: Best golf shot of your life? KS: Playing in the ‘Father/Son’ matchplay at my home club when I was growing up. I had just started playing and was about 14 years old. I hit a seven wood on the toughest hole at my course after my dad had found the fairway with the tee shot (we play a lot of alternate shot golf in England). My shot curved around the trees at the dogleg and settled on the green. I am sure I have hit better shots as time went on, but at the time this seemed like the best shot ever to me!

BHC: Surprise us – what would readers be interested to know about you? KS: My Soccer team is Crystal Palace. I don’t follow the English Soccer league as avidly as David in the locker room, but I do like to watch CPFC play as often as I can. They are not all that good, but they are my local team! I played tennis before I started golf. We were a tennis family. My brother played for England, although I was never that good. Maybe one day I will get out and have a refresher lesson from Royce. WITH KRISTA DUNTON Jan 20-22 | Feb 19-21 | March 4-6 | April 7-9 | May 26-28 | $1,750/pp Non-Member | $1,550/pp Member Top 100 Instructor Krista Dunton brings a level of excitement to Berkeley Hall Golf Academy that’s unparalleled.

Dunton’s unique, custom approach is matched by the award-winning technology at Berkeley Hall’s 33-acre Learning Center. “We have the technology to properly diagnose what’s going on with the golf ball, the golf club. I individualize what you can do with your body through bio-swing dynamics, because

everyone is built differently. No one is going to swing the golf club the same, nor should they, as we all have different physical structures. In my 25-plus years of teaching, what makes me different is I know what to leave alone and what to pinpoint and fix so you build a golf swing you can own and it can repeat on the course.” Once on the course, Dunton works on the other elements of human skills: how you think, react to your shot, manage your emotions and develop great technical skills that repeat under pressure, with a good mental set that allows you to perform at your best. “We are fortunate to have some of the best technology so we can measure and assess. We measure so we don’t guess, and the changes we make as your teachers and coaches are going to help you improve your game.”

We want to offer you something different, and customize it to you, the individual. I believe everyone has their own unique swing DNA. We work with what you have, and enhance that and make it better.

DAY 1

We use technology to get a game plan of where you are and where you’re going to go to. DAY 2

The process of getting your game on the course. How to think correctly, make it productive, implement swing changes under competition and pressure. DAY 3

How to keep this going, and practice correctly and efficiently. “We want to teach you how to manage variability. What I love about our Learning Center and two golf courses, is we’ve got every shot imaginable you can learn to play,” adds Dunton. “We teach you a variety of shots, different trajectories – so when you go on the course, you take those shots you learned in practice and tap into that with confidence.”

2021 LOOK AHEAD

e are looking forward to an exciting 2021 season! Building on our successful re-grassing of the South Course, members and guests are fully enjoying play on both courses. Once warmer temperatures arrive, the process of re-grassing the Learning Center short game area will begin, following the successful model completed on the South Course fairways. In addition, the practice green located behind the Fazio Room will be expanded to double the size of the green. This enhancement will provide a larger and more level putting surface, creating more practice area and hole locations for members and lessons. North Course Re-grassing Planning for the 2022 North Course re-grassing will commence this year and we anticipate a highly successful process, as we experienced on the South Course. 20

BERKELEYHALLCLUB.COM

We have secured an on-site visit from Fazio Design in 2021 and look forward to teaming up with their design group and the USGA to develop a concept for the North Course native bed renovation during the 2022 re-grassing. 2020 In Review We’d like to recap our accomplishments including the successful completion of

the South Course re-grassing. The new fairways have performed exceptionally well since the October re-opening. In addition, we replaced 6,000 square feet of cart path on both courses and beautification on the South Course included well-placed plantings of more than 660 Azaleas and Crape Myrtles. Looking back on 2020, there were certainly a great deal of uncertainties in the world, as we found refuge on our courses. Now and into the new year, our smart practices highlight our commitment as one of the premier private golf communities in the Southeast.
