4TH OF JULY GRAND CELEBRATION BLUES & BBQ COMEDIAN MARK KLEIN CHARITY CUP NEWS

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE and new home builds, with 82 homes now in process. More than 15 of those homes are on Club Owned Lots, so we look forward to welcoming new Members throughout the remainder of 2022. These additional homes are essential to the growth of our community and our drive to 500+ homes by 2025.

Here we are, midway through 2022, and as I look back on what has been an exciting and truly transformative time for the Club, I know I share the success of our great momentum to the Club’s Board of Directors and our Membership, for your great support. With the Verandah and Palmetto Room now fully open, it’s brought a whole new level of energy throughout the Club. Members are thoroughly enjoying the new inviting spaces and social atmosphere, not to mention the incredible views from the Verandah! At the River Park, the new, open-air River Park Pavilion makes the most of our Lowcountry setting, and here at the Clubhouse, the Ladies’ Locker Room upscale renovations should be complete in the next few weeks, for a summer opening. As we continue to enhance and upgrade many of the amenities throughout the Club, our momentum is also clearly visible throughout the community. This year has brought an influx in both new members

With all these achievements, it’s been a balance to work through the labor issues that have been felt here as well as nationally, particularly in the areas of golf maintenance and food and beverage. Our team at Berkeley Hall has done an incredible job, as we strive to present a premier member experience. When it comes to member, as well as culinary experiences, Dustin Dunn, Assistant GM has been instrumental in carrying us forward and we look forward to a great year as we continue to build on the success of our Phase I enhancements. This month ushers in one of my favorite club traditions, Berkeley Hall’s July Fourth Grand Celebration and all the great events leading up to it! It’s also one of the busiest weeks of the year as we welcome families and summer guests. Please help keep our community safe by maintaining safe community-wide speeds of 25mph and reminding visitors to stay safely on sidewalks and admire wildlife from afar. It’s wonderful to share this spectacular time of year with Membership, and I look forward to celebrating with you at our July 4th festivities!

JULY 11 | 3PM | FAZIO ROOM (note: formerly scheduled June Book Club was moved to July) “The Personal Librarian” by Marie Benedict, Victoria Christopher Murray The little-known story of the black woman who supervised J. Pierpont Morgan’s storied library. It's 1905, and financier J.P. Morgan is seeking a librarian for his burgeoning collection of rare books and classical and Renaissance artworks. Belle da Costa Greene, with her on-the-job training at Princeton University, seems the ideal candidate. But Belle has a secret: Born Belle Marion Greene, she is the daughter of Richard Greene, the first black graduate of Harvard, and she's passing as white. Her mother Genevieve, daughter of a prominent African American family, decided on moving to New York to expand her family’s opportunities. Richard, an early civil rights advocate, was so dismayed by her decision that he left. As Belle thrives, the main source of suspense is whether her secret will be discovered. Leverage is a talent, as her ruthless negotiating prowess and flirtatious mien win her grudging admiration and a certain notoriety. Review: Kirkus Reviews

What an incredible view, 2nd hole North Course (captured beautifully by BHC member Lisa Curtis, thanks for sharing!)

AUGUST 1 | 3PM | FAZIO ROOM “The Lincoln Highway” by Amor Towles Amor Towles’s new novel takes you on an American road trip, as it begins with a deceptively straightforward premise. Upon the death of his father from cancer, 18-yearold Emmett Watson is released early from a juvenile work farm in Kansas and driven home by a kind warden to a small town in Nebraska, where he is reunited with his precocious 8-year-old brother, Billy. Facing foreclosure on the family farm and violent retribution from the family of the bully he accidentally killed at the fairgrounds, Emmett has an immediate and stark choice – should he stay or should he go? His decision to start fresh leads to a second choice – Texas or California? It’s a sentimental as well as practical choice, home to his mother, who left the family years earlier, sending postcards from locales along the Lincoln Highway during her journey west. As it turns out, not reaching the intended destination becomes entirely the point and power of this wise and wildly entertaining novel. Review: New York Times

community news

hen it comes to life skills, invisible disabilities and important resources that help support those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, BHC member Kimberly Thorn has made an important difference in the lives of many Beaufort County families. “When I first began teaching life skills programs at Bluffton High School and May River High School, I quickly realized there are lots of resources in the area, but the resources were hard to find,” explains Kimberly. “The parents needed help, and I wanted to be a resource.” “It’s important to spread inclusion, so we all have a better understanding,” believes Kimberly. “Whether it’s right here in our Berkeley Hall community, or in everyday encounters with those that have invisible disabilities which may not be readily apparent.” When she taught in Maryland, she was involved in the Best Buddies International program, and realized the tremendous impact the program could have here in the Lowcountry. “So, I started a Best Buddies chapter in my BHS classroom and was able to do so at May River, as well as USCB,” said Kimberly. “Now, we’re working on establishing a state office for all of South Carolina.” When she left the classroom a few years ago, her goal was to get businesses and 14

BERKELEYHALLCLUB.COM

individuals to work together. That’s where her colleague Anne Karwath stepped in. “Anne and I worked together with the local Special Olympics, then we started working with Together for Beaufort County,” added Kimberly.

We soon obtained a grant to put together a disAbilities Resource Guide, which helps provide resources and support for all ages, with programs from babies to seniors,” added Kimberly, who now serves as chairperson of the disAbilities Coalition of Beaufort County. “Autism, severe anxiety, mental health issues and other developmental disabilities

can be particularly challenging for families with both young children and adult children in social situations. Equally so for a spouse whose wife or husband had a stroke, or may have early-stage dementia, and is looking for resources that can help.” That’s where understanding and awareness can go a long way. The disAbilities Coalition works with Beaufort County to help special education teachers get this important resource guide to parents and to help young adults find employment with businesses such as Publix, Kroger and others locally. Being in a welcoming setting also provides many families with peace of mind. BHC member Ana Soulios shares, “One of the main reasons we were drawn to Berkeley Hall was its friendly, welcoming environment. Everyone from the security team to Club staff couldn’t be more friendly and helpful. Our daughter Alexis has some developmental disabilities, and it brings us immense comfort to be in a smaller, caring and private community such as Berkeley Hall.” Copies of the disAbilities Resource Guide are available at the Berkeley Hall Concierge Desk and online at disabilitiescoalition.com/beaufort-county-resource-guide. “And if anyone has any questions,” adds Kimberly, “please feel free to contact me directly,” at kimber2192@icloud.com.

WITH KIERAN

Have fun along the way!! KIERAN STAUNTON | DIRECTOR OF GOLF fabulous Spring Season was brought to a close with two great tournaments. The Member-Member was played in late April with wonderful weather on both days and both courses looking fabulous! And in May, we had our first Mixed Member-Guest event since 2015 and it was a big hit! Looking forward, we will lead off our busy Fall season with the North-South Challenge in early October. Now our attention is focused on our annual July 4th celebrations at the Club, with our popular Nine & Wine event on July 3rd, as well as our traditional Flag Day event on July 4th.

As the summer months roll by, we will experience the usual Lowcountry thunderstorms. Please take shelter if you feel conditions warrant it, and if you hear the lightning alert siren you should take cover immediately. Once the siren sounds, there should be no further play or practice until the ‘all clear’ siren has sounded.

Looking to try out some of the other courses in our area? The Reciprocal Program is now underway. Please contact the Golf Shop if you would like to make a tee time at one of the other local courses during the summer months.

And, of course, it will become very hot at certain times during the summer so please make sure you are keeping hydrated as best you can. There are many coolers around the course with water, and there are iced towels at both the halfway houses as well as the turn on the North Course.

GOLF MAINTENANCE UPDATE

ON THE GREENS

y the time this issue goes to press, the Agronomy team will be close to completing the North Course aeration and well into the expansion of the Fazio Putting Green at the Learning Center. The Fazio expansion will have a great impact, more than doubling the area in size and providing the space to accommodate more players at one time. Not only will this enhance practicing putting, it will also provide some variety in the option for longer lag putting practice. The project is anticipated to take a few weeks, followed by an 8-week growing in period. We’ve been hard at working, continuing to build on the foundation

we laid last summer during my first aeration season. When the North Course aeration is complete, we will have put almost 140 tons of new sand into the greens and

Overall, tremendous progress has been made as the team successfully overcame challenges that are not readily seen. While the topdressing requires over 150 trucks of sand, supply chain and transportation issues have slowed progress at times. However, the Agronomy team has proven itself quite adept at maneuvering around waits surrounding new equipment and needed parts, as we complete our extensive projects on both courses. As we wrap up projects on the North and South Courses, we look forward to a great Fall season ahead on the greens.
