GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION EXCITING BHCF NEWS BLOCK PARTY! 4TH OF JULY GRAND CELEBRATION

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE transformation that offers more versatile space, a great view of the 9th hole and a welcoming space to relax throughout the day. The River Park Pavilion is soon to follow, and we anticipate it to be open around Memorial Day. With gorgeous views, it's the ideal site for gatherings of 35 people or so, with large scale fireplace, two restrooms, as well as a grill and prep area.

The time has come! With our Phase I transformation, Berkeley Hall Club reimagined brings us a renewed embrace of our club lifestyle, as members fully experience our welcoming amenities, gracious interiors and Lowcountry setting. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, May 7th. Gather with us on the Veranda for our “grand reveal” as we announce the member-choice, newly named Club venues, along with signature cocktails, delicious food stations and live entertainment. This is one celebration you won’t want to miss! During May, we’ll be able to enjoy limited use of the new Veranda and Mixed Grille as Choate completes final detail work. I, along with the rest of you, cannot wait until both spaces are open full-time! The partial opening in May will be a wonderful experience of what’s to come, and will also allow our team to feel out the new space and be prepared for a full Summer ahead. As we complete Phase I of the Clubhouse renovation, we are well underway on Phase II with the Ladies’ Locker Room

As our team continues to successfully complete projects throughout the property, enhancing the member experience remains paramount. Dustin Dunn, our new Assistant General Manager, has now been with us for just over a month and we’re excited to welcome and integrate his new ideas throughout the community. Momentum at Berkeley Hall continues at a fast pace. We currently have 50+ homes under construction and anticipate 20 more submittals by the end of the year. I’m happy to say, our goal of reaching 500 homes by 2025 remains on-track, and possibly ahead of schedule. These summer months, it’s wonderful to see so many members and families around the pool. It’s easy to stay cool with poolside drinks and our casual summer menu, as you relax below the beautiful Palmettos and enjoy our wonderful Lowcountry setting. As you read through the Berkeley Experience, make sure to mark your calendars for all our great member events, especially the Grand Fourth of July Celebration – our first in our newly renovated Clubhouse!

community news

hanks to YOU, our Berkeley Hall members, we’ve been able to make a real difference in our greater Bluffton community, and we recently received an incredible opportunity from an Anonymous Donor granting us $50,000 in matching funds to all donations made by new supporters of the charitable foundation. This special campaign runs through the end of June and matches dollar for dollar all contributions received from new donors.

This campaign also offers an “additional dollar match” to those who have previously contributed to the BHCF in the amount of $250 dollars or less in 2021. For example, if you

donated $250 last year, and this year you donate $750, our anonymous donor will match the additional $500, for a total donation of $1,250. ($250 + $500 + $500 match).

We thank you for your generosity, and hope you will support us in this incredible opportunity to do more. – John Kourakos, BHCF Chair and the BHCF Board of Directors

This gives us the opportunity to make an even bigger difference in the lives of those who need it most – funding much-needed grants to help address hunger, housing, medical, and other important needs – right here in the Bluffton community.

upporting our mission to make a difference, the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation has awarded a $50,000 grant to Bluffton Self Help. The grant, recently approved by the Berkeley Hall Board of Directors, is for acquisition of computer software to be used in BSH’s new Path Forward case management strategy. “By providing BSH with the tools they need, we can truly support their efforts to assist in a comprehensive approach,” shares Jane Moyer, BHCF Grants Committee Chair. The project was developed following a

community needs assessment by BSH in partnership with the Riley Center for Livable Communities which indicated 6 out of 10 families in greater Bluffton are economically at risk. “BSH leadership felt compelled to move from a crisis management focus to a more holistic approach,” explains Moyer. “Going forward, every community member who seeks help will be assigned a client advocate to help them address crisis needs, i.e. groceries and/or help with rent and utilities, as well as long-term goals and opportunities.”

MAY 2 | 3PM | FAZIO ROOM “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald The story of Jay Gatsby of West Egg is told by Nick Carraway, one of the legion from the Middle West who moved to NY and finds Long Island a fascinating but dangerous playground. Gatsby’s fortune, business, and connection with underworld figures, remain vague. Of his uncompromising love for Daisy Buchanan, and his effort to recapture the past romance, we are explicitly informed. This patient romantic hopefulness against existing conditions symbolizes Gatsby. Post-war reactions were at their height, everyone was restless. Gatsby, his parties and his mysterious wealth were the gossip of the hour. Daisy again meets Gatsby, to whom she was engaged before she married Buchanan. The inevitable consequence is almost incidental, for in the overtones the decay of souls is more tragic. With keen psychological observation, Fitzgerald discloses in these people a meanness of spirit and absence of loyalties, a curious, yet mystical, and glamorous story. Review: New York Times

Travel + Leisure's "8 Charming Small Towns in SC" features neighboring Beaufort & nearby Daufuskie! Bluffton and HHI got a mention too, as slightly larger favorites, a little too big to make the list!

JUNE 6 | 3PM | FAZIO ROOM “The Personal Librarian” by Marie Benedict, Victoria Christopher Murray The little-known story of the black woman who supervised J. Pierpont Morgan’s storied library. It's 1905, and financier J.P. Morgan is seeking a librarian for his burgeoning collection of rare books and classical and Renaissance artworks. Belle da Costa Greene, with her on-the-job training at Princeton University, seems the ideal candidate. But Belle has a secret: Born Belle Marion Greener, she is the daughter of Richard Greener, the first black graduate of Harvard, and she's passing as white. Her mother Genevieve, daughter of a prominent African American family, decided on moving to New York to expand her family’s opportunities. Richard, an early civil rights advocate, was so dismayed by her decision that he left. As Belle thrives, the main source of suspense is whether her secret will be discovered. Leverage is a talent, as her ruthless negotiating prowess and flirtatious mien win her grudging admiration and a certain notoriety. Review: Kirkus Reviews

KIERAN STAUNTON | DIRECTOR OF GOLF pring season is always one we look forward to here at Berkeley Hall. This year, we have been blessed with some wonderful Lowcountry temperatures. It seemed the only time the weather took a turn was early Spring, which saw a few of our events hampered by the elements. The newly added Mixed Member-Guest, coming up in May, has been a great success and we look forward to a wonderful event with a full field of players. We’ve added a new Parent/Child event for the first time, and anticipate a fun day on Saturday, July 2nd. Our Junior Program is also underway

with after school classes through mid-May, and then our Summer Program will run through August. Sign up now for Junior Camps and Classes at berkeleyhallclub.com.

Even as Summer is just beginning, we’re already looking forward to many Fall signature golf events: North-South Challenge, Berkeley Classic, Women’s Invitational and Club Challenge are all sure to be oversubscribed, so sign up early if you are keen to play in any of these events.

WITH KRISTA DUNTON May 3-5 | May 27-29 $1,850/pp Non-Member | $1,650/pp Member Top 100 Instructor Krista Dunton brings a level of excitement to Berkeley Hall Golf Academy that’s unparalleled.

Dunton’s unique, custom approach is matched by the award-winning technology at Berkeley Hall’s 33-acre Learning Center. “We have the technology to properly diagnose what’s going on with the golf ball, the golf club. I individualize what you can do with your body through bio-swing dynamics, because

everyone is built differently. No one is going to swing the golf club the same, nor should they, as we all have different physical structures. In my 25-plus years of teaching, what makes me different is I know what to leave alone and what to pinpoint and fix so you build a golf swing you can own and it can repeat on the course.” Once on the course, Dunton works on the other elements of human skills: how you think, react to your shot, manage your emotions and develop great technical skills that repeat under pressure, with a good mental set that allows you to perform at your best. “We are fortunate to have some of the best technology so we can measure and assess. We measure so we don’t guess, and the changes we make as your teachers and coaches are going to help you improve your game.”

We want to offer you something different, and customize it to you, the individual. I believe everyone has their own unique swing DNA. We work with what you have, and enhance that and make it better.

BERKELEY HALL

GOLF ACADEMY

We use technology to get a game plan of where you are and where you’re going to go to. DAY 1

The process of getting your game on the course. How to think correctly, make it productive, implement swing changes under competition and pressure.

DAY 2

How to keep this going, and practice correctly and efficiently. DAY 3

“We want to teach you how to manage variability. What I love about our Learning Center and two golf courses, is we’ve got every shot imaginable you can learn to play,” adds Dunton. “We teach you a variety of shots, different trajectories – so when you go on the course, you take those shots you learned in practice and tap into that with confidence.”

All proceeds benefit LPGA Girls Golf – an organization for girls age 7-17 to learn and play golf and make new friends.

B

erkeley Hall has long been a supporter of women’s golf and advancing the game of amateur golf. That’s why it’s so important to Director of Golf Instruction Krista Dunton, along with Head Professional Stephanie George, to host the “Women Growing Girls Golf” fundraiser. Join Krista Dunton and Stephanie George of Berkeley Hall plus an all-star list of top LPGA Pros for a great afternoon of Full Swing and Short Game instruction on Thursday, May 26 from 4-6pm at Berkeley Hall. $80 per person All proceeds benefit LPGA Girls Golf. To register contact Krista at kdunton@me.com or Stephanie at sgeorge@berkeleyhallclub.com.

Berkeley Hall’s Krista Dunton, a regular contributor to Golf Magazine, was featured in the March issue, with a full page special feature on her Golf Hack: Clip the Coin swing tips. THIS MAY SEEM counterintuitive, but with most pitch shots you want to bottom out your swing slightly before contact with the ball, thus engaging the wedge's bounce and allowing the club to slide underneath to hit a soft shot. I call the area two-inches behind and two-inches in front of the ball the “slide zone,” where the clubhead grazes the turf before and after striking the ball. To develop a feel for this, grab a coin and place it behind the ball. Set up as you normally would, but instead of focusing on hitting the ball, try and clip the coin before making impact. Because the coin is low on the ground, you’ll instinctively swing lower and shallower for better contact. It’s a great drill for helping those of you who tend to lift up and hit a lot of skulled shots. A few practice shots with a coin is all it takes to kick that habit. Golf Magazine is the premier luxury golf publication in the U.S. BHC Director of Golf Instruction Krista Dunton is a regular contributor and GOLF Top 100 Teacher. MAY/JUNE 2022

ADAM MILLER | DIRECTOR OF AGRONOMY

GOLF MAINTENANCE UPDATE

ON THE GREENS

oth courses are playing well as we endeavor to provide a premier golf experience to membership and guests. The Agronomy team has been quite successful in implementing course maintenance, including all tees on North Course topdressed and verti-cut edging on the greens, and extensive drainage work. While work on the South Course featured a successful needle tine aeration, sodding of drainage areas and more work outlined below. NORTH COURSE CONDITIONS: On the North Course, the Agronomy team has continued to work on mowing the native grasses around the golf course. All tees were top-dressed and verticut. We continued to do a little sod work around the course, and finished sodding the native area between 5 green and 6 tee with centipede. The team worked with Jim Hill from Innovative Drain Technologies (IDT),

uncovering entrance and exits for the greens drains. It is important to keep these open to be able to inspect greens' drains and flush out any debris that may get into the drain system of the greens.

Both courses are playing well as we endeavor to provide a premier golf experience to membership and guests. Edging was completed on all the greens. This is an important practice to keep the collar grasses from encroaching the green. It also helps define the greens edge. As the Bermuda grass begins to grow, the edge of the green will become more defined and will help keep the collar grass from encroaching on the champion greens. SOUTH COURSE CONDITIONS: On the South Course, the team completed a needle tine aeration, followed by a wetting agent and soil application to help with water penetration, gas exchange, and root health. The team also conducted some sod work on the course and completed the sodding of the drainage installed on #14 short of the fairway. A preemergent application was applied on the tees and roughs, and IDT flushed and inspected all the drainage on the South Course.

By placing a camera into the drainage, we can learn the status of the greens drainage and see the benefit of the cleaning process. In featured photo, Jim utilizes ground penetrating radar to locate pipes. This technology can also tell us depth of sand and gravel within the USGA green.

SUMMER AERATION: The Summer aeration schedule begins with the North Closure early May. We will pull a small core and verticut the North greens and tees, and plan to start some light topdressing on the fairway

The successful needle tine aeration on the South Course went very smoothly. It also had very limited impact on playability, as the greens remained firm and smooth after the process was completed.

and approaches along with some light aeration in the roughs. We will use this same model when the South Course closes on May 15 for three days. OTHER AERATION DATES: North Course Aeration II: June 1 – June 22 South Course Aeration II: July 6 – July 20 North Course Aeration III: July 26 – Aug 1 South Course Aeration III: Aug 9 – Aug 22

With the added drainage, sand, and new grass, hopefully this heavily shaded and trafficked area at the start of #14 fairway can thrive.
