Office and Portfolio Startup News IPIRA capitalizes on FireEye stock holdings UC owns equity in FireEye as a result of FireEye's acquisition of Ensighta Security, a licensee of security software developed by Professor Dawn Song’s research team. The IP served as the core IP of Ensighta Security. UC sold a portion of its shares, generating a total gain to date of approximately $600,000, inclusive of Ensighta's license fees, and the conversion and sale of FireEye stock. Proceeds from the stock sale are distributed to the authors, the department, and the campus according to Berkeley’s copyright policy.

IPIRA's Industry Alliances Office facilitated new research collaboration between BASF and Berkeley's College of Chemistry The California Research Alliance (CARA) will offer funding for ten postdoctoral research projects from the College of Chemistry. CARA is led by professors Peidong Yang and Omar Yaghi; research topics will be focused on inorganic materials and techniques for the electronic industry. Academic partners include UCLA and Stanford University. more


Patent­reform legislation spurs controversy among universities Though the legislation is designed to serve as a deterrent to patent trolls attempting to sue other parties, universities worry it will invariably impede their efforts to enforce their own patent rights. Carol Mimura, UC Berkeley’s Assistant Vice Chancellor of Intellectual Property and Research Industry Alliances, explained that the threat of incurring additional fees could discourage universities from filing lawsuits against actual infringers. “The provision favors large, deep pockets, not the little guys”. more
