Thank You! In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we would like to thank all our guest speakers, volunteers and event attendees who contributed to IPIRA's successful first Commercializing Software IP Conference on November 13 at the Berkeley I-House. Together with the Licensing Executives Society's Silicon Valley Chapter (LESSVC), and four other research institutions (UCSF, LBNL, ICSI, and LHS), UC Berkeley's IPIRA hosted and facilitated an all-day conference on software and copyright licensing. The photos below capture some of our four panels and the booths in our technology showcase.

In the Spotlight

Office + Portfolio News Berkeley companies included in Science Coalition Sparking Economic Growth 2.0 Report: companies created from federally funded university research Sparking Economic Growth 2.0 highlights 100 companies that trace their roots to federally funded university research and their role in bringing transformational innovations to market, creating new jobs and contributing to economic growth. Sequestration, which began in March 2013, is set to run through 2021 and will wring an additional $95 billion from federal R&D budgets over this period. This national disinvestment in science will have real consequences. Amyris was listed on the report along with Cadence Design Systems and Sun Microsystems from Berkeley. Similarly, Amyris is a lab idea that received a relatively small amount of funding ($500K) from the National Science Foundation and Department of Defense which ultimately grew into a startup based on Berkeley-owned IP. Since its founding in 2003, Amyris went public in 2010, achieved $74MM revenue in 2012, created a low-cost malaria treatment for low- and middle-income countries with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and is now selling biofuels. IPIRA filed patents on the basic method, and through a series of contracts (and sub-contracts), ensured that the final artemisinin-based malaria treatments would be available at a low cost to those in 88 economically disadvantaged countries. The “humanitarian use” clauses in the contracts, along with the associated IP management strategies and business models, was recognized through a “Patents for Humanity” award from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 2013.
