UC Berkeley Commercializing Software IP Conference Date: November 13, 2013 Wednesday Time: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Location: UC Berkeley International House, 2299 Piedmont Ave, Berkeley
IPIRA is excited to present an allday campus software IP commercialization conference, held in concert with:
– University of California San Francisco (UCSF) – Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) – Sandia National Lab – International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) – Berkeley Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS) – Licensing Executives Society (LES) Four panels will cover new models for commercializing software and copyright IP in high tech, digital health and education. Discussions are centered around IP licensing, emerging models of commercialization and software funding. A bonus fireside chat features two seasoned venture capitalists discussing implications of IT in the biotech arena.

Keynote Speakers and New Panelists
We are thrilled to announce Nola Masterson and Mary Schahen as our keynote speakers. Hear
them talk about trends on interrogating medical technology big data to win for investors. Nola Masterson Nola is a Founder and Managing Director at Science Futures Management and Chairwoman Emeretis at BayBio Institute. In the last 3 decades Science Futures created companies that went public at over a $50 billion valuation, and delivered block buster medicines and devices. Science Futures has participated in venture funding of over 30 companies. Nola is a seed stage investor and actively involved in the creation of IDEC, InSite Vision and Resound. Mary Schahen Mary serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors at Numoda Capital Innovations. She has served as the Numoda Corporation CEO since 2000. She has grown Numoda into a global life sciences company and led the creation of affiliate companies Numoda Technologies and Numoda Capital Innovations. Under Mary’s direction, Numoda Corporate Group has begun strategic investing with clients to further their product commercialization goals.
And a few words on the newest additions to our panelist list. Lou Berneman, Founding Partner, Osage University Partners Osage University Partners is a venture capital fund that invests exclusively in startups that are commercializing university research. Osage has partnered with over 50 of the most entrepreneurial universities and research centers to invest in their startups, and share profits to further promote the university entrepreneurial ecosystem. Osage is a UC Berkeley partner. Panel Descriptions
Panel 1 – Commercializing Software Developed in University Research How can you navigate and understand technology transfer and IP licensing? Hear from three UC attorneys on the anatomy of UC's technology transfer and IP licensing agreements, and new ways UC works with industry partners.
Panel 2 – Beyond Licensing: Successful New Models for Realizing Return from Software IP rights management in the digital domain has changed dramatically in the last 15 years. While some software producers rely on protection of proprietary products, the range of possible gotomarket activities is vast. Explore alternative models for realizing return from software using licensing, equity, revenue sharing, and other techniques.
Panel 3 – Digital Health: Smart Use of Your Phone In this cutting edge field, how will licensing, regulations, business models, research companies, and academia adapt to the challenge of rapid advances, and work together to bring safe and effective products quickly to market?
Panel 4 – Educational Content Licensing: Divergent Approaches Edtech learning products are used by teachers, faculty, parents, afterschool educators, and students who seek highquality learning experiences backed by education research and tested designs. What are key issues, complexities and opportunities in open educational resources, distribution, transfer, grants, and maintenance?
