We are excited to announce the launch of our first newsletter, just in time for summer! Our Mission: The Office of Intellectual Property and Industry Research Alliances (IPIRA) manages Berkeley’s IP portfolio and the commercialization of game-changing technology solutions. IPIRA supports campus research by facilitating the flow of funding to Berkeley labs and fostering collaborations among scientists, entrepreneurs and corporations. Earlier this month, 5 faculty members were selected to join Berkeley's Bakar Fellows Program. The program recognizes innovative research by early career faculty at Cal and is designed to assist researchers in introducing their discoveries to market. Acceptance to the program represents the start of an entrepreneurial journey, with each Bakar Fellow receiving discretionary research support of $50,000 per year for a maximum of five years and educational programs from IPIRA, Haas, Lester Center and Fung Institute. As we continue to roll out exciting programs to better support innovation throughout the Berkeley campus, we'd like to take a moment to highlight our staff's achievements. Please join us in congratulating Eric Giegerich's promotion to Director of Industry Alliances. He will now oversee the IAO office. Eric was instrumental in launching key industry affiliate programs on campus, including the iCyPhy research consortium for systems engineering and the Mobile Millennium traffic research partnership. Mobile Millennium led to data exchange and IP agreements with companies such as Nokia, Navteq, Waze, Roadity and many others, who were initially resistant to sharing data. Last month, Eric also led IPIRA's technology exhibition at Shanghai's inaugural China Shanghai International Technology Fair, in coordination with local Berkeley Haas alumni, and successfully promoting Berkeley's brand and research capability in China. Main fields of interest from these overseas corporations seeking technology collaborations were in engineering, computer science, material science, energy, cleantech and manufacturing. Lastly, IPIRA will now be hosting inventor office hours at Stanley Hall every Thursday afternoon, we invite anyone to come talk to us with questions. Kathleen McCowin will be in Stanley 408b

FEATURED STORIES Female Faculty Founder To Watch Computer security expert and MacArthur “genius” Fellow A Berkeley professor and researcher in computer security, Dawn Song founded Ensighta Security in 2011 to develop automatic thirdparty security audit products for the underserved Android market. This year, Ensighta has been acquired by FireEye, a VC backed cyber security firm in Silicon Valley with $100 million in bookings and over 1,000 customers and partners. Ensighta is a Berkeley Skydeck incubator startup and Dawn worked with our Office of Technology Licensing in the IP transfer process.

Dawn's research interest lies in computer security and privacy, including software security, networking security, database security, distributed systems security, and applied cryptography. She is the recipient of numerous awards such as the MacArthur Fellowship, the Guggenheim Fellowship, the NSF CAREER Award, the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, the MIT Technology Review TR35 Award, the IBM Faculty Award, the inviteonly Google Focused Research Award for security research, the George Tallman Ladd Research Award, the Okawa Foundation Research Award, the Li Ka Shing Foundation Women in Science Distinguished Lecture Series Award, and Best Paper Awards from top conferences.

IPIRA Wins 2013 USPTO Patent for Humanity Award It's not just an invention, it's about saving lives Our office won the Medical Medicines & Vaccines category award alongside Gilead Sciences and are proudly the only university entity on the winners list. Patents for Humanity is USPTO's award competition to promote humanitarian uses of patented technologies to address global challenges in health and standards of living. The 2013 awards recognize 10 recipients in 5 different categories. Thanks to Berkeley professor Jay Keasling, Sanofi, Amyris, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation ($53.3 million total grant support), and IPIRA staff who made this possible! NEW PROGRAMS AND OFFICE MILESTONES BSAC Patent Program Kickoff Starting this month IPIRA introduced a patent drafting service for the Berkeley Sensor & Actuator Center (BSAC), initiated by Kathleen McCowin and with support from our postdoc intern Lowry Kirkby. iCyPhy UniversityIndustry Research Collaboration Berkeley and CalTech launched a iCyPhy industry affiliate program to disrupt systems engineering. Operations will be based at Berkeley. IBM and United Technologies have joined as first members. Berkeley Received 1st Patent Award from EBI Research on improved sugar transport for biofuel production has been granted the 1st patent resulting from our EBI collaboration. UC Berkeley is a coowner of the patent. The Energy Biosciences Institute (EBI) is supported by a $500-million, 10-year award from BP. Formed in 2007, It is a unique collaboration among four research partners: UC Berkeley, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and BP. BayerQB3 Agreement In May 2013, the global drug giant signed a threeyear deal with QB3 and its seed stage venture fund Mission Bay Capital. The agreement provides funding and support to young companies working on drugs and diagnostics in oncology, cardiology, hematology, women’s health and ophthalmology.
