Top Story University of California achieved #1 university by total number of licenses executed in 2012 The top 9 U.S. universities were listed by licenses executed, licensing revenue and startups launched related to life sciences in 2012. In particular, Berkeley is 1 of 5 universities that founded 2/3 of all biotechnology companies in California. Berkeley Biotech Successes: Bioentrepreneurs at the University of California have predecessors dating to the early decades of the 20th century. Bancroft Library Fluxion Biosciences, a Berkeley spinoff, won the 2013 R&D 100 Award (also known as "the Oscars of Innovation") with its IsoFlux circulating tumor cell system. R&D Magazine KineMed inks deal with Amgen to study neurodegenerative biomarkers for brain diseases, using KineMed’s Dynamic Proteomics biomarker platform. KineMed Boris Rubinsky's NanoKnife invention has enabled cancer breakthrough kill without affecting the surrounding supportive tissues or nearby nerves and blood vessels. Telerik launches HTML5­focused mobile app accelerator program in Silicon Valley Application development solution provider Telerik expands its operations and opens up an office in Palo Alto. Telerik will launch a new accelerator in Silicon Valley dubbed Mach5 Accelerator dedicated towards helping emerging mobile app and web development companies using HTML5. Applications for the accelerator are accepted now through November 22 and those startups chosen will participate in a 14­week program beginning in January 2014.

Box $100,000 developer health app challenge First Place wins a $100,000 convertible note from Social + Capital Partnership, a venture capital firm in the Silicon Valley, plus 1­month office space and mentorship and an opportunity to propose the winning solution to Dignity Health’s leadership as a potential pilot project as well as marketing and sales support from Box. Think Big Accelerator + Microsoft Ventures Think Big Accelerator (TBA) in partnership with Microsoft Ventures is one of only a few partnerships of its kind in U.S. Microsoft Ventures will act as a strategic partner for promising startups in the TBA program focused on business growth,

Portfolio News Amyris meets major milestone in renewable fuel production Amyris announced that its farnesene plant in Brazil has achieved the production run rate of 1 million liters over a 45­day period. The company also secured a $35 million bridge financing. (10/11)

Affiliate News Haas School of Business professor Janet Yellen named to lead Fed Janet Yellen has been nominated by President Obama to become the first woman to head the nation’s Federal Reserve Board of Governors. If confirmed, Yellen will succeed current Fed Chair Ben Bernanke, who will step down in January 2014. (10/9)

Why cellular transport research won Medicine Nobel Prize 2013 for Randy Schekman Randy W. Schekman, professor of molecular and cell biology at Berkeley, has won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his role in revealing the machinery that regulates the transport and secretion of proteins in our cells. He shares the prize with James E. Rothman of Yale University and Thomas C. Südhof of Stanford University. (10/7)

Three Berkeleyans named California Academy of Sciences fellows 10 new members have joined the Academy Fellows, a governing group of around 300 distinguished scientists who have made notable contributions to one or more of the natural sciences. (10/4)

UC Berkeley, Berkeley Lab announce Kavli Energy NanoSciences Institute The Kavli Foundation has endowed a new institute at Berkeley to explore the basic science of how to capture and channel energy on the molecular or nanoscale to generate energy for human use. (10/3)

Four young Berkeley faculty scientists receive NIH awards University of California researchers received 15 of 78 NIH awards for high­risk, high­reward research.
